04: What In The World Could Be Wrong With Yukinoshita Haruno?
As she expected, it had been an eventful day to say the least.
Five different guys asked for her contact information while making a total fool of themselves.
Out of all of them, the young teaching assistant at the university tried to play it smooth, saying it was for her own benefit, that if she had any questions about the lectures, he would just be a call away and he was a far better conversationalist than the old professor who would rather worry about his wife and kid than deal with a student's query after work hours. Haruno decided not to tell the teaching assistant that, that was the reason why she liked the professor in the first place, because apart from being a good teacher, he was also a great family man. But she did crush the teaching assistant's dream though and nipped the problem in the bud, by pointing out that it was against the rules for a teaching assistant to try to hook up with one of the students and in the best case scenario, he might lose his job in the university, and in the worst case scenario, he will never be able to land a teaching job again in the entire city. That shut him up real quick and she walked out of the lecture hall, leaving him to stammer and come up with shoddy excuses for his behaviour.
During the course of the rest of the day, twelve people asked her out on a date, out of which she only knew two by name and one by reputation alone.
The one she knew by reputation was a total sleaze bag who fancied himself a bit of a womanizer, a real playboy from the western world kinda deal. He casually walked upto her while she was hanging out with her friends in the campus cafeteria, lowered his sunglasses, flashed her a devilish smile, winked at her and called her 'hot stuff' and Haruno had to remind herself that she had to put up with all this nonsense because she had to win a stupid bet against her younger sister. Well, the womanizer wasn't exactly wrong. The coffee was hot and being a sweet and innocent woman, who finally had the privilege of getting the attention of 'the king of the campus', she became really 'excited' and 'accidentally' spilled her hot beverage all over his crotch. The poor man yelped like a kicked puppy and when she handed him a couple of paper napkins to wipe himself clean, Haruno leaned forward and whispered something into his ear, that if he really cared about his so called reputation, he will treat her as 'the one that got away' and run away from this place like a scared little pup with its tail between its legs, because if he didn't, the next day a terrible rumour will be spread all across campus and he will be known as a 'two pump chump'. From the looks of it, the womanizer weighed the pros and cons and decided to be smart about it, leaving the cafeteria with a wave and a flying kiss aimed at her direction and a wet patch around his crotch. Real classy.
But it wasn't just the creeps and the weirdos who were acting screw loose. Her friends were treating her differently too. During break, all of her female friends asked a ton of questions, which really felt more like an interrogation, but all of them more or less wanted to know the same thing – Did Yukinoshita Haruno finally land a boyfriend? She waved them off and told them 'no', but they didn't really believe her, because there was no way she dressed up this nice, just because she was 'feeling like it'. According to them, it had something to do with a man. Well, Haruno thought, they weren't exactly wrong. But Hikigaya-kun was more of a boy than a man in her book. Obviously, she didn't tell her friends the truth. It was none of their business. She also noticed how her female friends who were in a happy relationship, suddenly called their boyfriends and told them not to come hang out with them in the cafeteria. Their excuses were flimsy at best. For some reason, this managed to bother her a little bit. Say what you will about her, but Yukinoshita Haruno never went after another woman's boyfriend. But when you dress up all nice and pretty and don't give out a believable reason behind your actions, people always assume the worst. But it wasn't all that bad. For one thing, she didn't have to pay for a single thing in the cafeteria. Her male friends had it covered. It was their treat. But Haruno was not naïve. She knew exactly why they paid for her food and drinks. But she also knew that none of her male friends were stupid enough to think that just because they paid for her meal, she would fall in love with one of them. If someone held onto that kind of grandiose delusion, and decided to act upon it, thinking his feelings would be returned, he would lose whatever relationship he had with her and she would no longer treat him as a friend. That's just how things were with her, you either had to deal with it or let go.
But like she mentioned before, it wasn't all that bad. On her way to Soubu High, she had an interesting encounter with a kid who was in elementary school, who walked upto her holding a white rose and told her that she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen and he wanted to marry her someday when he grew up. The boy was so sweet and innocent and earnest with his feelings that it really made up for all the nonsense she had to put up with for the rest of the day. It really brightened her mood. So she took the flower from him, ruffled his shock of unruly dark hair and lied to him, saying that she already had a boyfriend. But it was okay, because he was gonna find someone prettier than her. The boy told her it wasn't possible, but he promised to respect her feelings and said if her boyfriend didn't treat her real nice, he was gonna show up and steal her away from him.
When the little kid scampered off, waving his hand enthusiastically as he wished her goodbye from far down the street, Haruno couldn't help but chuckle to herself. Oh, the sweet innocence of little kids. Had she ever been so innocent? Not likely.
"Engaging in lewd acts with a minor." Her younger sister's voice wafted from behind. "I ought to call the police."
Haruno slowly turned around to face her younger sister, keeping a pleasant looking smile on her face, the white rose still clutched in her hand. Now that she thought about it, this was actually a good thing, that she didn't have to go all the way to Soubu High to meet up with her sister. And a particular someone. For one thing, it would save Yukino-chan from being embarrassed in front of her friends – Wait, did she have any friends. Not with that attitude she didn't. And the less we comment about her personality the better – But anyway, it was the thought that counts. Regardless, Yukino-chan would have been really embarrassed, having her older sister show up to pick you up from school. It would have really ruined her whole image of a mature and independent, second year high school student. Haruno didn't want that to happen. Besides, she didn't want to run into Hayato-kun. Now that she knew how he felt about her and what he did, she didn't know how to react and what to say, if she ran into him in the streets. In other words, running into her younger sister a couple of blocks down the street from Soubu High was perfectly fine. In fact, it was more than fine. Because, her sister wasn't exactly alone right now.
"Hello again, Hikigaya-kun." Haruno waved her hand at him. "I didn't expect to run into you today." She lied and kept on going. "But I have to say, I'm not surprised to see you with Yukino-chan. You two seem awfully close."
"We are not." Hikigaya-kun replied using his monotone voice.
But Haruno didn't budge. From the looks of it, she was definitely on to something. She just had to push and push and power through until she reached the crux of the matter. Besides, she had practically caught them red handed. "How else do you explain your current situation?" She accused playfully. "Both of you are walking home together. That's something friends do. But I have a feeling, that's not the case."
Hikigaya-kun blinked. "Oh wow." He turned to Yukino-chan and spoke in a flat voice. "Your older sister is definitely more intuitive than you."
Yukino-chan treated him with indifference. "Nobody asked for your opinion, Hiki-kill-yourself-kun."
"…That seems like an overreaction. And what's up with adding 'kill yourself' to my name. It's like you are not even trying to be clever."
"So you admit it. You like it when I insult you." Yukino-chan shook her head. "The list of things wrong with you keeps on getting bigger and bigger as the days progress. At this moment, it seems more appropriate to put you down. Permanently."
"So you give up?" Hikigaya-kun smirked. "I knew it. You can't fix what's not broken. The best you can do is sweep things under the rug."
Yukinoshita Haruno watched the banter taking place between the two of them and realized on thing immediately – the two of them definitely had chemistry. Either the two of them had feelings for each other, but were too afraid to act upon them and confess, or it was still early days and they didn't realize they loved each other yet. Knowing her sister, it was probably the latter and not the former. But was Hikigaya-kun the type who was honest about his feelings and the kind of guy who confessed first to his love – Haruno didn't really know him that well to answer that question properly. But she was about to find out.
"Sooo~" Haruno stretched out the 'o' real long to get their attention back on her and stop them from doing whatever the hell they were doing. Hikigaya-kun turned to her first, so she talked to him instead of her younger sister who was looking at her with annoyance. "I take it, you are walking Yukino-chan home."
Instead of nodding his head, the boy scoffed. "As if." He remarked. "I'm just taking her to the nearest bus stop." This time when he turned to look at her sister, there was a smile on his face which was this close to being a full blown smirk. It was the perfect example of what Shizuka-chan called a 'shit eating grin'. It took her a second, but she finally got what he doing – He was making fun of her. And Yukino-chan was reduced to a blushing mess, embodying the perfect shame and humiliation of a young woman brought to her knees and kept at the mercy of an evil man with too much power at his hands.
Being the evil, older sister, Haruno decided to join in on the fun. "Did she tell you that she is bad with directions or did you figure it out all by yourself?"
In response, Hikigaya-kun raised an eyebrow. "What do you think?"
Oh, Haruno knew what to think. But she didn't say it out loud. Not that it helped her in anyway, because Yukino-chan spilled the beans on their little family secret.
"What are you laughing about nee-san?" Yukino-chan glared at her with annoyance. "When our family planned a trip to Destinyland, you mistakenly went all the way to Tokyo."
Hikigaya-kun looked at her like he was seeing her for the first time. The look on his face, it was difficult to put it into words. He seemed shocked at first, like he didn't expect this from her, but it quickly morphed into one she never thought she would see on another man's face. He looked at her like she was a real idiot. "Destinyland is in Chiba." He said and there was a bit more force behind his words.
"Hey! It's not my fault." Haruno voiced a protest. "The place is called Tokyo Destinyland." But there was no real intent behind her words. Besides, she didn't want to have a fight over such a small matter. It was kinda pointless. But she was a bit embarrassed at having her secret out in the open. She willed herself not to blush, but her cheeks did pink a little. If Hikigaya-kun noticed it, he said nothing about it, which was good for his own sake. Haruno would have skewered him alive if he dared to make fun of her.
Well, there was no use hiding it anymore. The secret was out in the open. Yukinoshita Haruno was not the perfect woman you imagined. For one thing, she had a terrible sense of direction.
Apparently being bad with directions was something both sisters inherited from their mother. Haruno had heard the story a couple of times from their father. Back in the day, when they were still dating, mom would always arrive for their date an hour late, and she would always lie and tell their dad that she lost track of time, because she was busy putting on makeup and getting dressed to look nice for their date. But dad was much smarter than people gave him credit for, so after mom kept on repeating the same old excuses over and over again, he eventually caught on and confronted her and mom just swallowed her pride for once and told him the truth. It was a really fun story with a sweet ending, because when dad proposed to mom, he somehow worked in a cheesy line which used the word 'lost' in a great way. It went something along the lines of: 'Fuyumi-san, let's get lost together.' But mom agreed to marry him and they had two wonderful daughters, so hey, who was she to judge.
"Okay." Hikigaya-kun was talking again. "Since your older sister is here to pick you up," Ouch. Hikigaya-kun, you are way too mean. You said it like that on purpose. "I guess, it's time for me to leave."
No goodbye, no farewell greeting of any sort, not even a nod or a wave – the two of them were really sending mixed signals and confusing the hell out of her. Do they have feelings for each other or not? But as it turns out, Haruno didn't really care about that at the moment, because she had only one thing in mind.
The bet.
But she had to be quick about it, because Hikigaya-kun had already got on his bicycle and his foot was on the pedal. Right. There was no point in being subtle. She had to take the direct approach.
"Hikigaya-kun~" Haruno cooed using a flirty tone. "I just went out shopping today and I bought this new dress." She gave a quick little twirl and spun on her heels, giving him something nice to look at. After staring at teenage girls in the same high school uniform all day, she was probably a sight for sore eyes. Now it was time to go in for the kill shot, seal the deal and win the bet. She spared a look at Yukino-chan, and finally said the words, which needed to be said. "How do I look?"
Oh. It was way too easy. Really, it was child's play. According to the terms of the bet, all she had to do was make Hikigaya-kun say something nice about her. And the way she went about it, how she sold the story and phrased the question at the end, it was just a matter of time before Hikigaya-kun said something nice about her. And that's all he had to do and Haruno would win the bet. In fact, Hikigaya-kun didn't have to say much. He could just say, 'You look nice' and that would still count. Really, Yukino-chan, there was no way you can win, Haruno thought, feeling rather smug about herself.
Hikigaya-kun shrugged. "It's a nice dress."
Mission accomplished. Haruno turned to her younger sister and gave her a look and just to annoy her a bit, she wiggled her eyebrows a little, as if saying, 'Did you really think this would turn out any different? Your boy isn't special.' But to her surprise, Yukino-chan didn't look bothered. In fact, a small smile was playing on her lips and she crossed her arms over her breasts and tried to look imposing, but she just came of looking cold and grumpy. But she didn't look like a woman who had lost a fight. In fact, she looked like a woman for whom everything was going according to plan. Things became a bit more clear when she opened her mouth. "Yes. It is a nice dress."
Haruno didn't miss how Yukino-chan put extra emphasis on the word 'dress'. What she meant was pretty simple. She hadn't won the bet yet, because Hikigaya-kun hadn't said anything nice about her, he had simply said something nice about her dress. In other words, 'Plan A' had failed. And she might as well count 'Plan B' as a failure too, because unlike the men she had to deal with in campus, Hikigaya-kun didn't seem like the type of man who doled out compliments left, right and center, when a woman went out of her way to look nice in order to get his attention, spent more time than was necessary to pick out the perfect dress which accentuated her curves or wore a push up bra, because she needed that extra oomph factor and wasn't afraid to use both her assets to her advantage to draw his eyes to her body. 'Plan B' had been simple - catch him red handed while he tries to sneak a peek at her breasts and when he is caught, embarrass him until he has no choice but to beg for her forgiveness, and when that happens, he will no doubt lower himself to make some lame excuse to justify his perverted behaviour. At the moment, Haruno wasn't picky. She could go with anything from 'You are so beautiful, I couldn't help myself from staring at you!' to something along the lines of, 'Your breasts are so huge, how can I not stare at them!' But like she mentioned, 'Plan B' turned out to be a failure as well.
Well, she had no choice. It was time to enact 'Plan C'.
"Hikigaya-kun," Haruno called out his name, but she noticed he wasn't really paying attention to her. He was keeping his eyes ahead, focused on the traffic down the street, only there was no real traffic, unless you counted the old man and his rickety old cart, who was in the process of selling baked sweet potatoes to a small group of customers. Ah, he must be hungry. Perfect. Let's put 'Plan C' into action. "How about I buy you something to eat?" This got his attention and he turned to look at her direction with rapt attention. Really, was that all it took, Haruno wondered. Mom was right. The way to a man's heart was through his stomach.
"The last time we spoke, you said that I owe you a dinner." Hikigaya-kun stated and his tone suggested that he was fully expecting a trap of sort.
Haruno affixed the white rose to her hair with a bobby pin and bated her eyelashes while trying to look the very picture of innocence. "I'm really happy that you remember our promise, Hikigaya-kun." She spoke using a gentle tone of voice which lulled others into a false sense of security. In truth, she was kinda annoyed. Yukino-chan was with them at the moment and though she stayed really quiet, treating them like they didn't even exist in the world, she would be a fool to not listen in on the conversation. And Haruno didn't want Yukino-chan to know that Hikigaya-kun owed her dinner. But she would deal with it later. One problem at a time, that was her motto. Now, on with the show. "But you were nice enough to help Yukino-chan when she got lost. You see, our family car wasn't there to pick her up today. It was sent for a little tune-up. I would have arrived at Soubu High much sooner to pick her up, but I was stopped by a bunch of scouts who wanted me to join their agency and give modeling or acting a shot. One even said, I could become an idol." A twinkling laugh, a gorgeous smile, and what's more, she had the truth on her side with this one. Scouts were a real nuisance for her. They were like bloodhounds. But he didn't need to know that. All he had to know was that she was beautiful enough to be a model or an actress or an idol. One of these three should tickle his fancy. Something had to work. Apparently not. But she wasn't about to give up. "But we are getting off topic. How about I buy you something to eat?" Let's not go too overboard. Nothing too expensive. He wasn't worth it. "Do you like ramen, Hikigaya-kun?"
Woah. The effect was immediate. Either Hikigaya-kun really enjoyed the concept of free meals or he really loved ramen. After a second, he composed himself and tried to behave in a proper manner. He even felt the need to clear his throat before speaking to her using his normal cadence. "Where will we be going?"
Gotcha. 'Plan C' might actually work. Haruno told him about the place and he remarked. "I have heard about the place from Hiratsuka-sensei. I will meet you there."
And then he was off, cycling down the street, brimming with youthful energy. In fact, Haruno almost caught the sound of him humming a nice tune as he took a left turn and vanished down the corner.
For an entire minute, nobody said a word, and then, Haruno just had to open her mouth, because this was an entirely new experience for her and she didn't know how to react.
"What the hell just happened?" Haruno had no idea why she was whispering.
Yukino-chan grinned like a Cheshire cat. "Congratulations nee-san. You came in second place to a bowl of noodles served in a broth." The look in her eyes said it all. "I hope you are proud."
It took them close to half an hour to reach the ramen shop. It was a quaint little establishment, but both sisters didn't have time to appreciate the beauty of the spot. Haruno was here to win a bet and Yukino-chan was here against her will, but also because she knew her older sister was a liar and it wasn't beyond her to lie and say that Hikigaya-kun complimented her when he did no such thing. Really, there was so little trust between the two sisters. That was gonna become an issue in the future. But Haruno wasn't thinking about the future.
She stepped into the ramen shop and gave a cursory glance of the place. It was a far cry from the high end restaurants and cute cafes she frequented, but it wasn't all that bad. Besides, she wasn't here for the décor. She was here to win a bet. But even though she looked all over the place, one thing was missing and she couldn't help but say it out loud.
"Where is Hikigaya-kun?"
The owner of the establishment perked up and eyed her up and down. The ring on his finger said he was married, the years on his face said he was old enough to be her father and the way he went back to his cooking said, he wasn't really interested in her as a person. But she was a customer and he had been in this business for long enough to know that it was best to humour women around her age, otherwise they would post bad reviews on the internet.
"A kid by that name stopped by sometime ago." The owner said. "He had a bowl of ramen and left."
Haruno couldn't believe what she was hearing. "And you let him leave?" Not good, she was raising her voice. It wasn't the owner's fault. He didn't know what was going on. She should put the blame on the man who was actually guilty – Hikigaya Hachiman, the man who left her in the wind. But something didn't add up. "Wait, how did he pay for his meal?"
The owner gave her a flat look. "With money."
Okay. She had no idea what was going on anymore. Was this all Hikigaya-kun's doing? Or was this a part of Yukino-chan's plan? Were they in on this together? That would explain why Yukino-chan goaded her to find the ramen shop on her own without using the Google Maps app on her phone. She had to know that with their terrible sense of direction, they would eventually end up getting lost. And they were too proud to ask anyone for directions. In the end, they were stopped by two police woman from the local police box, because they were behaving in a suspicious manner, walking around in circles along the same couple of streets and it was those two police women who gave them the right directions to the ramen shop. But by then, half an hour had already passed and as she found out a couple of minutes ago, Hikigaya-kun hadn't bothered to wait around for her. He probably thought she would show up sooner, but when she didn't, he paid for his bowl of ramen and left, probably badmouthing her and the fact that she didn't pay for his food as promised.
As expected, not everything goes according to plan. Feeling miserable, Haruno grabbed a seat at the counter and as soon as she did that, the owner of the ramen shop placed a hot, steaming bowl in front of her. The contents of the bowl looked great and it smelled heavenly and her mouth started to water on its own.
"One bowl of tonkotsu ramen." The owner said. "Eat it while it's still hot."
Once again, Haruno had no idea what was going on. For lack of a better word, she was completely stumped. And that didn't happen a lot. "I didn't order that." She told the owner, keeping her voice neutral.
The owner talked while stirring a huge pot of broth. "No you didn't. But that guy named Hikigaya did." He told her. "He had a bowl of tonkotsu ramen too. But after he paid for his food, he told me that if a beautiful woman with a white rose tucked in her hair came to the store, then I should make her a bowl of tonkotsu ramen too. He also said that the money he was giving me was for your bowl of ramen, and when you finished your bowl of ramen, the money you will pay me will be payment for his bowl of ramen." The old man let out a dry chuckle. "Kids these days. Why do they always complicate things? If you want to ask out a girl and take her out to eat ramen and you want to go dutch and split the bill, why don't you just be a man about it and tell her the truth."
But Haruno was no longer paying attention to the grumbling owner of the ramen shop, because her attention was caught on one single piece of information. It took Yukino-chan to break the moment, when she grabbed a seat next to her on the counter and congratulated her in a halfhearted manner, very much keeping in line with her frosty character and displaying the trait of being a sore loser. "Please keep in mind that you won based on a small technicality, nee-san. Hikigaya-kun didn't directly call you beautiful. He told the owner of this establishment that you were beautiful. But I guess, you can say, that still counts." When she didn't get a response from her, Yukino-chan turned to the owner. "I will have a bowl of tonkotsu ramen as well."
The owner gave her a look. "You have to pay for your own meal, ojou-chan. That Hikigaya kid didn't say anything about there being another girl. Frankly, I think he's more interested in your older sister."
Yukino-chan grumbled to herself and muttered something underneath her breath, which if she had to guess where a slew of disparaging words aimed at Hikigaya-kun and his propensity of being a real penny-pincher. By now Haruno had started to dig in to her food and she was really enjoying her bowl of ramen. And if her cheeks had turned a little bit red, it was probably because she was feeling a little bit warm while trying to slurp down the noodles while they were still really, really hot. It had nothing to do with Hikigaya-kun, the boy who she was starting to see as an interesting young man, who called her beautiful, not when she wore a form flattering dress, but when she had a white rose tucked into her black hair, a man who kept his word and paid his debts and bought her a delicious bowl of ramen. And the most important detail of all, he was not a man blinded by his male ego and was comfortable with the concept of going dutch.
A random stray thought burst into her head.
'Hikigaya-kun is a keeper.'
And Yukinoshita Haruno let out a full belly laugh, until she chocked and started to severely cough and had to reach for a glass of water. There were tears stinging the corner of her eyes and it took her a moment to compose herself and come back to the world of reality. Yukino-chan actually managed to sound a bit worried there for a second. "Nee-san, I wish you wouldn't burst into these bouts of manic laughter when we are out in public. People are staring at us."
Like always Haruno waved her off. "Sorry, sorry. I just thought of a really good joke." She eyed her younger sister for a second, before changing her mind at the last moment. "You won't get it, though." She told her in the end, affecting a sad tone of voice.
Yukino-chan glared at her in annoyance. "Not everyone shares your twisted sense of humour, nee-san."
Haruno sighed and looked at her empty bowl of ramen. For once, her younger sister was actually right. "Yeah, you're right." She said while trampling down hard on the voices in her head, which lured her with temptation of freedom and fantasies of true love. But like always, she never let them get the best of her and trick her into doing something foolish and untoward which would earn her the disapproval of her entire family. "I'm different. I'm…" She didn't have it in her to say the word 'alone'. Yukinoshita Haruno was many things, but she was never really alone in this world. At least, not by the known definition of the word. And if her voice sounded really small in the end, her younger sister didn't bring any special attention to it. It was probably nothing. Her older sister was probably fine. After all, what in the world could be wrong with Yukinoshita Haruno?
A/N: This is a really big chapter, because this is gonna be the final chapter of this fic as I'm not gonna write another chapter for this fic for a long while. Instead, I'm gonna focus on some of my other fics. I hope you enjoyed the chapter though. I had fun writing it. Though sometimes, I had the urge to introduce characters from other anime, like all the characters who didn't have names in the chapter. I really wanted to just go around dropping names, instead of going around calling people, 'the teaching assistant', 'the womanizer', 'the elementary kid who gave Haruno the white rose', 'the owner of the ramen shop'. But I controlled myself. Although, I don't know if I can do it again in the future. Also, I wanted to end the chapter on a positive note, with Haruno blushing while thinking about Hikigaya, but I decided to go with the bittersweet end. It feels more in character. If you guys have a problem with that, let me know in the reviews, and I will delete the last few paragraphs.
Then the story will end with the line – "And if her cheeks had turned a little bit red, it was probably because she was feeling a little bit warm while trying to slurp down the noodles while they were still really, really hot. It had nothing to do with Hikigaya-kun, the boy who she was starting to see as an interesting young man, who called her beautiful, not when she wore a form flattering dress, but when she had a white rose tucked into her black hair, a man who kept his word and paid his debts and bought her a delicious bowl of ramen."
