A Dog's Purpose Is Strange Magic 2 Chapter 29
Bailey came down to the Chamber of Secrets carrying all the power an angry mother can ever exude. More than prepared to face the threat unafraid.
But Bailey is sure anyone who is in their place right now would have no objections to changing their tune as the Chamber of Secrets basilisk emerges from into the light.
Before Harry has the mishap to meet the basilisk's deadly gaze he turns around running to the nearest wall. Bailey and Brokefang flanking him with Fawkes taking off into the air for advantage. The second Harry touches the wall he shuts his eyes using one hand on the wall for balance and the other on Bailey's back for guidance and support, Sorting Hat under his arm. Harry is grateful for Bailey's help or else he'd be running blindly searching for an anchor.
Something huge hit the stone floor of the Chamber. The serpent uncoiled itself from Slytherin's mouth.
"Kill him," hissed Riddle. "Parseltongue won't save you here, Potter. It only obeys me."
The Basilisk roars, taking off in pursuit after them.
At the worst possible moment, Harry trips on a loose upended stone. He fell hard onto the floor, glasses falling from his face and the Sorting Hat slipping from his grip.
Bailey yelps from the jostling. She is sent tumbling with him from the stumble. Brokefang places his nose on her stomach, nudging Bailey back up as Harry recovers his lost glasses and sets them back onto his face.
Harry doesn't even rise to one knee when they're hit.
Brokefang and Bailey manage to jump clear in time but not Harry. The basilisk's head slams into Harry's side so hard that he is smashed into the wall. The basilisk is about to sink its teeth into Harry's much smaller form when Fawkes, Bailey, and Brokefang intervene.
Fawkes goes for the basilisk's head, soaring around it in circles to distract it, Brokefang and Bailey on the monster's back biting and clawing at any part of its thickly scaled hide they can get their paws and teeth on. The basilisk screeches snapping furiously at Fawkes and thrashing its body in order to dislodge the dogs on its back. Seeing an opening Fawkes dives straight for the basilisk's face. His long golden beak and talons sank out of sight and a sudden shower of dark blood spattered the floor. Fawkes then makes quick work of the other one as the basilisk roars in pain.
Thanks to Fawkes's handiwork none of them will be dying from the basilisk's deadly gaze in this fight. The back end of the basilisk's tail flashes, narrowly missing Harry.
"No," screamed Riddle. "Leave the bird and the dogs! Leave the animals! The boy is behind you! You can still smell him! Kill him!"
The blinded serpent swayed, terribly confused, still deadly.
Bailey, Brokefang, and Fawkes refuse to grant the basilisk any respite.
Fawkes continues to circle the basilisk's head, jabbing here and there at its scaly nose to cripple it further. Brokefang and Bailey aim for spots all over the basilisk's body that show skin beyond the scales, drawing blood.
As valiant as their efforts are. This cannot go on forever. Something is going to have to give to tip the balance in either side's favor.
It comes from an unexpected place, none anticipating it.
From inside the discarded Sorting Hat a sword hilt with glittering red rubies the size of eggs glimmers into existence. A weapon Harry can use to kill the beast once and for all if spells can't do much against it.
Bailey and Harry witness this at the same exact time. But Harry can't just reach out and take it. The Sorting Hat is on the other side of the basilisk and in range of the monster's teeth. As soon as he moves the basilisk will hear and strike in his direction. A distraction is required to give Harry time.
Bailey knows what she must do.
Howling a war cry Bailey darts in a dead run for the basilisk's face. Rapidly closing the distance Bailey steals her nerve and attacks in a head-on collision.
The basilisk gains enough warning of her approach from the sounds she makes. Because of this information, the basilisk is ready for her. The basilisk uses its formidable tail to send her flying. She crashes into a nearby column at the spine. Instantly Bailey can feel bone crack and then nothing in her back end as she slides down onto the floor. She's lost all feeling there and the shock leaves the rest of the places where Bailey does retrain feeling unable to move. The pain is excruciating.
Seeing his mate in agony Brokefang breaks off the attack to come to her aide. Fawkes is keeping the basilisk's attention occupied.
Bailey whines at Brokefang's ministrations unable to move. She can tell her injuries are fatal. The poor girl now fights to remain conscious and watch the ongoing battle to the bitter end.
Bailey's sacrifice was not in vain.
Harry had gotten hold of the sword in the Sorting Hat.
Riddle ordered "Kill the boy! Leave the animals! The boy is behind you! Smell him!"
When the basilisk comes at him again, Harry is undeterred on his feet and ready.
The basilisk's head was falling, its body coiling around, hitting pillars as it twisted to face him. He could see the vast, bloody eye sockets, see the mouth stretching wide, wide enough to swallow him whole, lined with fangs long as his sword, thin, glittering, and venomous. It lunged blindly, going by what it can only hear. Harry dodges and hit the Chamber wall. It lunged again and its forked tongue lashed Harry's side. Harry raises the sword in both hands in preparation. The basilisk lunged again. Harry throws his whole weight behind the sword and drives it to the hilt into the roof of the serpent's mouth. The grievous wound kills the basilisk instantly, keeled over sideways and collapsed dead, but not without its price.
One of the basilisk's long, poisonous fangs had bitten deep into Harry's arm. He slid down the wall, gripping the gang that is spreading poison through his body and harshly wrenching it out. Harry's own blood is now soaking his robes.
Fawkes's part in the confrontation finished he flutters down to Bailey's side intent on healing her. But Bailey knows her boy is running out of time. Whining Bailey pokes Fawkes in the breast with her nose and points a shaky paw in Harry's direction, her message clear.
Bailey wants Fawkes to heal Harry instead of her.
A selfless wish that Fawkes will respect.
Bowing his head to Bailey, Fawkes flies over to Harry's side while Brokefang lies down on her stomach beside his mate ever watchful.
Bailey struggles to keep her eyes up so she can watch the rest unfold, monitoring the situation now that she can no longer fight.
Barely able to see with his vision cloudy from the venom, catching Fawkes landing in front of him, thickly, Harry said "Fawkes? You were fantastic, Fawkes."
Moving in front of him, Riddle said "You're dead, Harry Potter. Dead. Even Dumbledore's bird knows it. Do you see what he's doing, Potter? He's crying."
Fawkes's head is lying on Harry's injured arm, pearly tears trickling down the glossy feathers and onto the bleeding bite mark.
"I'm going to sit here and watch you die, Harry Potter. Take your time. I'm in no hurry," said Riddle, obnoxiously. "So ends the famous Harry Potter. Alone in the Chamber of Secrets, forsaken by his friends, defeated at last by the Dark Lord he so unwisely challenged. You'll be back with your dear Mudblood mother soon, Harry…She bought you twelve years of borrowed time…but Lord Voldemort got you in the end, as you knew he must."
Instead of the pain increasing it is leaving Harry. The Chamber and everything else around them is coming back into focus. Harry gave his head a little shake and there was Fawkes still resting his head on the child's arm.
Finally realizing what Fawkes is doing, pointing Ginny's wand at the phoenix, Riddle says "Get away, bird. Get away from him! I said get away!" There's a bang like a gun and Fawkes took flight again in a whirl of gold and scarlet. "Phoenix tears…Of course…healing powers…I forgot…But it makes no difference. In fact, I prefer it this way. Just you and me, Harry Potter…you and me…"
Riddle raises Ginny's wand to finish him once and for all.
In a great rush of wings Fawkes soars back overhead, depositing the diary into Harry's lap.
Harry doesn't hesitate. Somehow, he knows precisely what to do as if someone else is guiding his hand. As though he's meant to do it all along, Harry seizes the basilisk fang on the floor next to him and plunges it straight into the heart of the book.
Riddle unleashes a long, dreadful, piercing scream as though he was the one stabbed.
Ink spluttered out of the diary in torrents, streaming over Harry's hands, and flooding the floor. Riddle was writhing and twisting, screaming and flailing in agony. Riddle clutches his face, an explosive light eating him up from the inside.
There's an explosion and then Riddle blasts from existence.
There's a sharp gasp from the other end of the Chamber.
Ginny is awake.
Ginny sat up as Harry hurried over to her. Her bemused eyes traveled from the huge form of the dead basilisk, over Harry, in his blood-soaked robes, and the diary in his hand. She drew a great shuddering breath and tears began streaming down her face.
Distraught, Ginny cried "Oh, Harry, I tried to tell you at breakfast, but I couldn't say it in front of Percy. It was me, Harry, but I swear I didn't mean to. Riddle made me. He took me over and…how did you kill that thing? Where's Riddle? The last thing I remember is him coming out of the diary."
Holding up the diary and showing the fang hole, Harry said "It's all right. Riddles finished. Look! He and the basilisk. Come on, Ginny, let's get out of here."
"I'm going to be expelled," wept Ginny, downcast, sniffling fervently. "I've looked forward to coming to Hogwarts ever since Bill came and now, I'll have to leave. What'll Mum and Dad Say?"
"No one's going to blame you for this," said Harry, firmly. "Not after what I have to tell them."
Rubbing her eyes, Ginny said "I'm sorry about kicking Friendly. I had no control over that either. I love the dogs."
"Bailey knows now that it wasn't you," said Harry, eyes going wide. "Bailey!"
Harry scours the Chamber for Bailey and his heart sinks when he locates her. Bailey is unmoving off to the side with Fawkes and Brokefang standing vigil over her immobile form.
"Bailey," said Harry, rushing over with Ginny.
Harry delicately puts Bailey's head into his lap. She whines at the movement, lightly licking his hand to console him. Her eyes ask him a very clear question.
Did I do good?
Swallowing thickly, rubbing her ears, Harry said "You did good, Bailey. Very good."
There's absolutely nothing Brokefang, Harry, or Ginny can do to alleviate her suffering.
Bailey is resigned to her fate, the pain almost unbearable.
Other forces aren't willing to let her go just yet.
Specifically Fawkes.
Hopping over on his talons Fawkes lays his head over Bailey's mouth. Tears drip from Fawkes's beak and onto her tongue. As a reflex Bailey swallows them and slowly, she can feel the pain sparking her body to recede and the functions in the lower half of her body come back to life.
The phoenix tears do their work splendidly and Bailey's condition is stabilized much to Harry, Brokefang's, and the newly revived Ginny's relief.
Within moments Bailey is fully healed as if she'd never been hurt at all.
Brokefang barks happily, running around them in glee.
Ginny claps her head, smiling in joy.
"Thank you, My Friend," murmured Harry lovingly into her fur, hugging his beloved, loyal, and constant protector close to him.
Bailey enthusiastically licks his lightning-shaped scar in reply, wagging her bushy tail profusely.
Where else would she possibly be other than with him?
It's Bailey's job as his familiar.
Authors Note:
For those of you on fanfiction I'm sure you've been facing the many unwanted ads when you're reading a story. Well, yesterday, I finally had enough, and I got an adblocker app. It worked! No more ads on any level! The one I got is Adblock Pro: Safari Ad Blocker. It really works. Just follow the instruction video that it attached to it.
Heads up everyone there's someone on fanfiction you need to seriously watch out for. Early a couple of months ago after I woke up I was checking my email and I saw I had a new guest review on my A Dog's Purpose Is Strange Magic 2 sequel. I took a look at it and got a very big shock. Some random person I've never spoken to before on here or anywhere else in my life was basically threatening me. Intimidating and practically ordering me to write a threatening letter to someone on their behalf, telling to stay off of for life or else they and everyone else close to them would be killed, disgustingly telling them to kill themselves. And at the bottom of the message this crazy person wasn't done. Warning me that if I don't send the letter then they would kill me and for confirmation to email them to make absolutely sure I complied with their demands. Of course I did nothing of the sort. Instead of doing what they wanted I reported them to the website, sent copies of this deplorable guest review message to police officer cousins of mine so they could have it on file, and I went to a nearby police station and reported it.
When I spoke to the police officers and they checked everything on the message they saw, that while the address and names of business were accurate the people and their names were not. They agree it was more than likely a scam because of the email address on the bottom in order to perhaps get access to personal information or potentially hack my computer. Despite that I'm still very happy they took it seriously as I showed and told them everything. All the same I'm still very happy that I brought this to the attention of law enforcement. Even though the entire thing might be fake I'm still very happy to have brought this to the attention of those who can do something about it if it was legit in some way. This may have been a scam, but it's obvious these people are beyond irresponsible if they try to goad people into sending death threats to random strangers just to get access to info.
Be that as it may if this does unfortunately happen to you do not send any messages to the email addresses they put down and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you bring the message to the authorities immediately whether it is legit or not.
Because it's a guest review it might not be visible for a couple of days as it loads if it is sent to you. But when it does you should definitely pressing the report abuse button and send it to the email that leads to the support staff that is available.
Just a heads up to those of you who aren't aware of this yet, Email alerts for this website are now only active if Email opts is enabled in account settings.
I hope you all like this one! I certainly did while writing it for your vast enjoyment! ;D
For those of you just starting out with my stuff there are other works on my profile that may catch your interest. I highly recommend you take a look as soon as the opportunity presents itself to you. Who knows, you may be pleasantly surprised by what you discover.
Stay safe everyone. Especially with all of these crazy natural disasters occurring a lot lately due to global warming and climate change everywhere for sure. I swear it's like they're getting worse and worse all the time and it's like officials are simply just ignoring it or pretending it doesn't exist entirely just to go on with their daily lives. Especially those in multi-million dollar companies that rely on certain elements of our planet that we rely on to naturally keep us safe instead of adapting and finding new safer ways to keep in business. There are so many options out there where they can adapt, but they just refuse to see it because all they care about is money. Climate change is altering so much faster than anyone can really keep track of.
So, in light of all this, it is important to live life to the fullest as much as anyone can.
I know I am. ;) See you guys next time.
