Chapter 1: A New Journey Begins
"So… what you're trying to say is that you fell here… from another world? But when you wanted to leave and go on to the next world, your path was blocked by some unknown god?"
"Yes and just like that, the god took away my brother. Some kind of seal was cast upon me, and I lost my power. So while we used to travel from world to world, we are now trapped here. How many years ago was it? I don't know… but I intend to find out. When I woke up we were all alone - until we met you two months ago…" Her frustration and sadness was evident in her golden eyes and clenched fist.
"Yeah, Paimon really owes you for that. Otherwise, Paimon likely would have drowned. So, Paimon will do her best to be a great guide! But um… Paimon's confused, is that not your brother?" The small floating figure pointed toward her savior's lap.
Lumine looked down and smiled sadly while running her hand through the spiky hair of the young figure currently sleeping with his head on her thighs. "No, he's not my brother. Well adopted little brother now I guess. Aether and I found him on the last world we visited before coming here."
"Wait wait wait. Paimon is grateful you saved her from drowning and all but you didn't kidnap him, did you? Wah! Paimon doesn't want to be kidnapped." Paimon brought her arms up to her chest and waved them in front of her and floated a bit away from the blond world traveler.
"No! We didn't kidnap him, let me explain." The otherworldly traveler sighed before relaying more of her story. "The last world we traveled to was called the Elemental Nations. We originally chose to visit it because the people of the world were capable of using a wide variety of powers, powers that Aether and I wanted to see if we could replicate. They could walk on walls and water, use large amounts of elemental powers, duplicate themselves, and so much more. However, when we started exploring we realized that it was what we call a "dark world"."
"A dark world? What's that?" Ever inquisitive, the small floating girl listened intently. After spending the last two months teaching the two blonds the basics of the language of Teyvat Paimon was interested to hear their story, and after some time Lumine finally had enough grasp on the language to explain their situation.
"It's a name that we came up with to describe worlds that are violent, chaotic, filled with hate, and lacking most moral values. We discovered that the Elemental Nations' history was comprised almost entirely of violence and death. In the past extended families, called clans, fought and killed each other for no reason other than conquest and petty grudges. Eventually, these clans banded together to form villages but even then the violence still continued. The five major villages and many minor villages fought each other near constantly, committing horrible acts. The people called themselves "Shinobi and Kunoichi" and they did whatever they could to lie, cheat, steal, kill, rape, torture, and brutalize anyone that wasn't from their village, and even sometimes their own people too. Aether and I were attacked multiple times when we were simply traveling through the land." Lumine grimaced and sighed once again as she thought back to some of the horrible things that they saw.
"Ah, how awful!" Paimon cried, horrified as she listened to the Traveler's story.
"We were planning to leave the world when we decided to visit the "Hidden Leaf Village" which we had heard was the most caring and peaceful of the villages. They apparently had a saying, "The Will of Fire", teaching them that the entire village was a family and that love and working to protect everyone in the village was the key to strength and peace." The Traveler's golden eyes darkened slightly as she thought about the Leaf village. "They obviously didn't believe in their own words."
Paimon tilted her head quizzically. "What do you mean by that?"
Lumine released a breath to calm herself down before continuing. "When we were visiting the village and were about to leave we heard screaming, yelling, and laughing coming from the center of the village. When Aether and I went to see what was happening we saw little Naruto here. The villagers… had cornered him in the middle of a large crowd. They all had weapons and were laughing and celebrating." The blonde clenched her fist and fought back tears as she remembered. "They were attacking and beating up Naruto while cheering for his cries."
Paimon gasped as her small hands flew up to her mouth in horror.
"He was in horrible shape with wounds covering his body, screaming for help and for them to stop, saying he hadn't done anything. They called him a demon and hurled insults and objects at him while he was lying broken on the muddy ground, it was awful. He's just a little boy and they were merciless. Aether and I even saw a man unzipping his pants while walking toward Naruto." A few tears fell from Lumine's expressive eyes as she thought back to one of the few times she had ever been truly furious.
"We couldn't watch anymore and flew over to save him. After… dealing with all of the people that were celebrating their atrocities we took Naruto with us. He has some kind of special healing ability so he was able to pull through. What made it even worse though is that he doesn't even know why they were attacking him but knew that people hated him. He didn't have a good life in his village and clearly wasn't safe there. We couldn't just leave him there, so when we went to leave the Elemental Nations we got to know him more, asked him if he wanted to travel through worlds, and brought him with us." Lumine smiled down sadly at the young boy that had so quickly wormed his way into both her and her brother's hearts.
Paimon wailed with tears streaming down her face as she heard the story of how Lumine and Naruto met, it was so awful and she felt so bad for the poor boy.
Feeling movement from her lap Lumine looked down and saw that Naruto was waking up from his nap, adorably stretching his limbs like a cat as his round whiskered cheeks puffed up with a yawn.
Big blue eyes blinked open and looked up towards the girl whose lap he was laying on. Noticing that both of the girls around him were sad, the eight-year-old boy smiled brightly to try and get them to cheer up. "Morning big sis! Paemon! Is everything ok?" Sitting up the small boy tilted his head to the side cutely wondering why they were sad. He didn't like seeing his new big sis and even newer friend sad.
Lumine smiled and ruffled the young blond's hair, internally squealing at how cute he looked, especially with his little whisker marks and how thoughtful he was being. It continually surprised her how kind and loving the eight-year-old was after suffering such hate and isolation in his home village. "Paimon and I were just talking about how we got here and… how we met each other."
Paimon nodded her head to the older blond's words. "Yup yup. You are getting a lot better at speaking Teyvat's dialect traveler. But Naruto! It's Paimon, not Paemon! It's Paimon! P-A-I-M-O-N!" Stomping her foot in the air the small pixie-like girl yelled at the young boy who said her name incorrectly, momentarily forgetting everything other than her frustration at being misnamed.
Flinching slightly, hunching his shoulders, and lowering his head the small boy couldn't help but see flashbacks to his life in his home village and mentally cursed himself for messing up. Growing up surrounded by hatred and ostracization led him to have a somewhat negative self-image and a fledgling belief that all of that hate was because of himself. His mood grew dimmer. "S-sorry… Pai… Paimon."
Lumine frowned sadly as she saw one of the truthfully well-hidden signs of the abuse that Naruto had suffered. After she and her brother had rescued him they had gotten to know him and found him to be a cheerful and kind boy, yet his slight recoil when touched, his poor intelligence and manners, and his fear of rejection among other things were evidence that despite his efforts to hide and deny it, the abuse had left a mark. When they were getting to know him Naruto explained some of the mistreatment that he had gone through, but Lumine believed he was still holding some things back.
"Paimon! He's still learning, he didn't mean to mispronounce your name. It's ok Naruto." Lumine felt sad as her attempt to reassure Naruto didn't seem to do much and he flinched as she patted his head.
Realizing what she had done Paimon winced and rung her hands in shame as she saw the effect her impulsive words had on the young boy. "Paimon is sorry, she didn't mean to yell. Forgive Paimon."
With the mood effectively ruined it took a while before the group got back to their previous conversation. Once Lumine and Paimon were able to assure Naruto that everything was ok he returned to his happy attitude, even if the golden-eyed traveler worried it was at least partially an act.
"Did you sleep well Naruto? You must have been really tired because you were out of it for a while." Trying to dispel the tense atmosphere, Lumine brought up the fact that Naruto had been peacefully asleep for nearly the past twelve hours, something that she had not seen happen previously as the boy had appeared to be suffering from nightmares almost every night.
"Oh, I had this really cool dream! I made a new friend too!" Naruto smiled a true, genuinely happy, smile remembering one of the few good dreams that he ever had.
Slightly confused, the world-traveling blonde girl came to the assumption that he must have been talking about an imaginary friend, made in his dreams."You made a new friend? Are you talking about someone from your dream?"
"Yah! Nahida-chan is super cool! She's got these awesome pointy ears and pretty green eyes. We played games together and talked a bunch! I'm not sure what she was talking about but she said that my dreams called out to her, so she came to visit me! Ooh, guess what! When I told her we were looking for big brother Aether she said she would try to look for him!" Naruto bounced in his seat remembering the fun he had with the small white-green-tipped-haired girl.
"It's nice that you had a good dream and made a new friend." Lumine smiled at the young blonde, believing his dream to be simply his imagination running wild in a positive sense for once.
"Well, we should head off if we are going to find your brother! We're off to… a Statue of the Seven and then Mondstadt!" Paimon began to fly off towards the rocky cliffs that stood behind the beach where they were currently resting at.
Lumine and Naruto quickly followed their new friend and guide, ready to explore and hopefully find their missing family.
*Inazuma*
Far across the ocean on Narukami island of the nation of Inazuma, a massive thunder sakura tree stood tall and high above the rest of the land. The thunder sakura was one of the main draws of the shrine that was built around it. Normally the shrine was busy with people from all walks of life visiting to worship the Electro Archon and seek guidance from the shrine maidens.
Today however the shrine stood closed off to all who would visit it, empty besides one woman who stood beneath the boughs of the great tree. Dressed in the throws of the head priestess the woman, a pink-haired kitsune yokai performed a ritual with a level of intense focus. Completing the complex ritual and receiving no response the woman frowned and released a sigh of frustration.
Yae Miko, the Head Priestess of the Grand Narukami Shrine, Chief Editor of the Yae Publishing House, and Familiar of the Electro Archon The Raiden Shogun, was not often confused or frustrated, yet the world around her seemed to be throwing curveballs at her as of late. With the Vision Hunt Decree, the Sakoku Decree, and the Resistance of Watatsumi Island, troubling times were coming to Inazuma. Yet despite deeply wishing for peace and progress to return to Inazuma and to see her Archon, who had locked herself in the Plane of Euthymia, again, none of these worries were her current focus.
Around two months ago she had felt something she had not felt since the passing of Kitsune Saigu. It was a weak feeling and yet Guuji Yae could not get it out of her head. Somewhere, in one of the other nations, she knew she had felt an extremely powerful kitsune. Since the first time that she felt it, she had not been able to directly feel it again, no matter which rituals she performed.
She had closed the shrine on multiple occasions to try and sense the energy she had felt that first time. It should have been impossible, Yae Miko knew that she was the last 'true' kitsune in all of Teyvat, one of the few yokai in general that survived to this day.
As the pink-haired priestess was contemplating digging through the old Yokai records that she had stored away to find another ritual to try and find the source of her concern she felt it. Her face lit up with surprise as she was able once again to feel the slightest murmur of kitsune power through her senses, it was far away, perhaps in Mondstadt. As the feeling once again disappeared Yae Miko began to swiftly walk out of the shrine, she had a favor to ask of the Raiden Shogun and the Yashiro Commissioner.
"Hmmn perhaps I should stop and get some desserts for the Shogun and some boba tea for the Kamisato clan head. Everyone is so much more pliable when treated to their favorite snacks."
