It's been a whirlwind of a day. A roller coaster of emotions ranging from excitement, anticipation, joy, nervousness, disbelief, elation, and finally pure happiness and contentment.

That's what has led them here, nestled naked together in Harvey's bed, every cell in her body relaxed and feeling on top of the world with their limbs tangled together. After fifteen years, she can't believe they finally got here. Assuredly not without their ups and downs. Donna stares at the ring glittering in the moonlight on her left hand as her fingertips draw nonsensical patterns over his chest, unable to stop the grin that spreads across her lips.

Today was perfect.

It wouldn't have been exactly what she'd planned for them, on the occasions she'd let her mind wander in that direction of their future. Hijacking Louis and Sheila's wedding and becoming a godmother had certainly not been on her radar of life events happening when she'd woken up that morning, but, God, is she grateful for the turn of events the day had taken.

Harvey's breath is even, his chest gently rising and falling beneath her ear, but she can tell he isn't asleep just yet even though his eyes are closed. Donna's heart constricts painfully with the amount of love she feels for this man, buried so deeply in the most sacred parts of her heart for so long, but there's nothing for them to hide now. They made it.

"I love you, Harvey," she murmurs, so quietly she's positive he won't even hear it, but the tightening of his embrace around her shoulders, accompanied by the gentle press of his lips to the top of her head proves her wrong.

"I love you, Donna. More than I could ever tell you."

The corners of her lips tip up, and she knows that's probably true. Harvey's never been the best with expressing his emotions, but ever since that night he'd shown up at her doorstep for the hundredth time in their relationship, that look in his eyes that had broken down every one of her barriers, he's been so much better at telling her what's in his heart and on his mind.

Doing her best to settle, content in this moment, Donna closes her eyelids and inhales deeply. There's still too much adrenaline running through her veins, however. Her body humming with everything that's happened, mind whirling.

Her thoughts turn toward Lucy, how precious and beautiful she'd looked as she'd held her in her arms, however briefly, and she can't help but wonder what a little girl with her red hair and Harvey's dimples might look like. "Do you want kids?" Donna whispers into the dark, her breath fluttering over his skin as she tilts her head up to look at him.

So she sees the surprise flicker over his features, that little crinkle between his brows as he opens his eyes and angles his gaze down to meet hers that indicates he's really considering his answer. And his voice is resigned as Harvey responds with utter honesty, "I don't know."

It occurs to Donna then that despite how far they've come in recent weeks (years really) that they've never really discussed this. Not in depth, not even as a hypothetical. With Harvey's history it had always seemed a touch taboo, a line even she wasn't willing to broach. But they are married now, have vowed to spend the rest of their lives together and it seems like something they should be on the same page about.

Donna shifts, angling her body so she's laying more fully over him, legs tangling together even more as she rests her chin over her hands on his chest. "Okay, let's talk about it then."

"Do you want kids?" Harvey counters, deflecting. Normally she'd call him on it, but it's clear that they're sharing a vulnerable moment right now and she's willing to play along.

Her fingertips beat a tiny staccato over his chest, the only indication of her nerves, as she also considers her answer. "Maybe. I haven't thought about it in a while." Not for at least a year, when she'd realized she'd wanted more in life and had to determine what that looked like. In the end, she'd chosen work, had decided to fight for her career and everything she'd devoted her life toward for over a decade. She'd worked tooth and nail to be the best damn legal secretary in the city and does the same thing every day to prove herself as COO.

However, while Donna would never consider choosing to focus on her career as settling, deep down, she'd wanted this. At the time she'd been too afraid to ask for it, scared of getting her heart broken again, of Harvey rejecting what they both knew to be facts. They've been in love with each other for a very long time.

She'd been right, too, because before she could even define what she meant for herself, he'd run off into the arms of Paula Agard. The memory leaves a sour taste in her mouth, but thankfully, all of that is behind them now. But while she'd been contemplating, the idea of children had crossed her mind.

How could it not have?

"But you have thought about it?" Harvey's voice breaks through her musings, bringing her back to the present.

"Yes." Donna answers evenly, tone giving nothing away. Until she sighs and musters up the courage to lay it all out. There's nothing left to lose. "But never significantly. I was always too focused on work, on you," she gives her husband (and that is still so weird to even think about) a pointed look before continuing, "to ever be serious enough with someone for it to be a real possibility."

There had been Mark, and the idea had definitely occurred to her a time or two in the six months they were together. She'd seen a future with him, but there had always been a part of her holding back, the part tethered to the man beneath her, that had been too strong even back then. Mitchell had been serious about her, and had wanted them to take that next step toward that white picket fence life, but she'd ended it because she'd known in her heart that he'd never make her feel the way Harvey could.

A guilty expression moves over Harvey's features and he frowns down at her as he lets out a resigned sigh of his own. "So I'm the one that kept you from starting a family."

Donna scoffs at that, lifting herself up onto her elbow, hair a bit wild and mused from his fingers tangled in it earlier. "Of course not. Don't be ridiculous. My choices were my own. I'm just telling you the truth. I could never see myself having a child with any of the men I dated when I knew you were really what I wanted."

Lifting a hand, Harvey curls his index finger under her chin, drawing her closer until their lips meet in a soft kiss. "I'm sorry I was an idiot," he apologizes as they part, gaze earnest and playful enough to lighten the mood with the familiar dig she often tosses back at him, causing Donna to chuckle faintly.

"You're forgiven," she smiles back at him, thumb twisting the new adornment on her finger symbolizing just how true that is.

Her husband's fingers push a stray lock of hair behind her ear, fingers gliding gently down her cheek as he cups it lovingly. "So… where does that leave us now that I've finally gotten my head out of my ass? Are kids something that you want?"

The redhead is quiet for a minute, picturing that little girl in her mind that had started this entire conversation. Memories of seeing Harvey with Marcus and his niece and nephew at Lily's funeral, hearing stories of them on the rare occasions he'd been home for a holiday and how even when he'd had to be coerced into spending time with them, he'd always been a bit lighter afterwards, filter through her mind.

"I think I'd like to have a family with you, Harvey. One of our own." Until this second, Donna isn't even sure she'd been aware of how deeply that desire ran within her. But now images of what their life could be flood her mind's eye and squeeze a vice around heart. Harvey rocking a baby in his arms in the middle of the night, swinging a toddler around in circles while shrieks of laughter erupt from their child, Sunday mornings taking a stroll through the park as a family. It's a beautiful picture.

It's not that simple though. "But I'm not exactly as young as I used to be," Donna lifts a finger to lay over Harvey's lips, stopping his protest before he can even get it out. "It's true. And frankly, I'm not sure even if I were, that being pregnant is something I would want to do." She wants a family with Harvey, of that now she's certain, but that doesn't stop the doubts of her own ability to provide that.

He's quiet for a minute longer and Donna can see the wheels turning behind his brown eyes. "Alright."

Her head tilts to the side in confusion, for once, unsure what he's saying. "Alright?"

"Alright," Harvey repeats, a small smile spreading across his face, clearly amused with her and the turn their discussion has taken.

"What does that mean, Harvey?"

Drawing her body closer to his, Harvey wraps both his arms around his wife's waist, locking them around her at the base of her spine. "It means I love you, Donna. And for a long time family and what that means was really complicated for me. It was painful." Harvey pauses, gathering himself as his thumb strokes gently over her skin. "But you helped me move past that, helped me heal those relationships and the idea of being a father scares the hell out of me, but if you believe in me, in us, I want to try."

Donna hadn't thought it was possible to fall any more in love with him than she already was, but the sincerity in his words, the vulnerability, has her tumbling even deeper into that well. "Really?" she questions, voice thick with emotion, because she wants him to be sure. "I don't want you to say that just because you think it's what I want to hear."

"Donna, I would do anything for you, you know that. But I mean this. I want a family with you, too. It doesn't matter how."

Something bursts inside her, warm and bright, and her eyes well up as she grips Harvey's face between both her palms, "I love you," she whispers and kisses him deeply.

It's only a matter of a few minutes before the heat spreads through them again, desire fresh and burning as Donna shifts to straddle her husband's waist, lips meeting over and over. For the second time that evening they make love to each other in the quiet of the night, content that they are a thousand percent exactly where they are supposed to be.

They have time to figure out the particulars. What having a family will look like for them. Her belly growing with a life they created together or, hell, maybe they'll adopt someone that needs them as much as they need each other. Whatever their future looks like, Donna knows it will all be okay.

Because no matter what, Harvey is her family.
