The Deville You Know Ch25
"Is this how you felt when we were going to see my family?" Paige asked. She had been getting more and more nervous the longer they had been driving, and now they were fully into the suburbs, they were at breaking point.
"Probably not. I was just a 'friend' then, and thought that's how it would end, so I had nothing to worry about, at this point anyway." Sonya gave a look, both of them remembering how that ended up going.
"Yeah ok. I'm just really nervous. I really want her to like me, to accept us. I don't want it to go like last time."
"Honey, it won't. Mom knows we are together, she's accepted me since the day I came out to her, and she has two gay daughters that she has never shown anything but love for. She's not going to try and tell us this isn't real. She's going to see what I've been telling her about you. I just wish we could have got here sooner."
"Telling her about me? Telling her what huh?" Paige teased with a grin.
"Everything."
The grin disappeared. "What do you mean, everything."
"I was telling her about you when dating you was a fantasy. How crazy I was about you even though I never had a chance. How I never wanted to give up on you even when I thought you were straight. She never stopped me, she even chastised me when I called Chloe after I thought you rejected me."
"Baby, I'm still so sorry I did that."
"I know, I'm not having a dig. And she was right to tell me off too. Running to my ex was stupid."
"Stupid or not, it worked. Made me face the truth before I lost you to her, or I thought I had anyway. We wouldn't have fought, and then Mandy wouldn't have locked us in that room."
"Yeah, or we could have just been honest with each other. Would have been easier." Sonya laughed, knowing it wasn't ever going to have happened.
"Nah, no way babe. I needed that kick up the ass to make me admit I loved you."
"Aww." Sonya smiled inside and out, hearing those words still filled her with joy as much as the first time.
"Speaking of Mandy." Paige felt it was best to change the subject, knowing they were going to be talking about their relationship a lot in the coming days. "Have you spoken to her?"
"What, Miss Domestic Bliss? Since Finn asked her to move in she's turned into Martha freaking Stewart. At Raw last week she was asking me about wallpaper or paint and showing me stuff in a Pottery Barn catalog. Pottery Barn! I feigned interest, and I will help her when she asks, but it just did nothing for me. Promise me you will tell me if I get like that when we get a place together."
"Oh, we are moving in together now?" Paige said, making Sonya panic. She felt like she just jumped a step, when it was the one thing she promised not to do.
"No, I mean, we only said 'I love you' a little while ago. Plus we are so busy with work stuff, we aren't home all that much it wouldn't make sense to think about it yet. It's just, we spend almost all of our time together, and I wouldn't change that for the world, and I was thinking it might make sense if we just have one place that's ours. But there's no…"
Paige held her hand up. "Don't say it. Don't tell me there's no pressure. Never again. Babe, I love you. And when the time is right, I would love for us to have a place together. But there is no rush. We need to sell both ours to raise most of the money, and I want to take time looking for wherever we end up."
"You're serious? You don't have to say that just for me." Sonya said almost automatically.
"I am, sometimes I think you just want me to keep saying it, but I love you, and I want to make you happy. I want a life with you, and that includes having a home that's ours. And we practically live together, on the road anyway."
"True. But that's not exactly official. Everyone thinks we have twin beds and sleep separately. If they only knew what we were doing to each other most nights."
"Babe! You can't say that, or I'm going to be red faced when I meet your mother." Paige felt it happening already.
"You better cool off fast then, because we're here." Sonya pulled the car into the driveway of a very nice looking house, with a large yard and two car garage. Almost the second the engine was switched off, an older woman came out of the house, almost running over to them.
"Mom!" Sonya shouted, as the two hugged tight for several seconds. Paige looked on, happy to see how close they clearly were.
"So, Paige, this is Deborah Deville. Mom, this is her, this is Paige."
"Mrs Deville, this is a real pleasure, I've looked forward to meeting you. I can't believe how much you look alike."
"Hey!" Sonya gave Paige a slap on the arm in jest. Paige extended a hand to her mother, ignoring the slap.
"Pleasure is mine, but please call me Debbie. It's too weird being called Mrs. anymore."
Paige remembered being told that Sonya's parents divorced many years ago, but her mother kept the name for the children's sakes. "Oh, I'm so sorry, I didn't mean it like…"
"I know you didn't, and it's fine. Most people still call me that, but in my home, it's Debbie." The tone was friendly and reassuring, so Paige exhaled and carried on, as Sonya grabbed their bags out of the car.
"This place looks amazing." Paige said. "I may have to steal a few of your decoration ideas."
"Mom did it all herself. It's why she has never moved, even though she could afford to." Sonya echoed the praise.
"Nonsense Sonya. This was my home since my 20s, and you kids grew up here. I'd never want to leave. It's never been about money. That's what I have always told you." Debbie was only slightly scolding her daughter.
"Yes Mom." Sonya conceded, also realising the loving smile she got from Paige. "I'll just go and put the bags in our room."
"Our room?" Paige was genuinely surprised, expecting a guest room at best, maybe the couch. She had never had a problem with that concept, Debbie knew they were together, but it was still a matter of respect.
"Yes, unless you've had a fight, and you want the couch?" Debbie said jokingly. "It's Sonya's old room, but it's still a bed big enough for two. Just remember the walls aren't soundproof."
"Mom!" Sonya exclaimed, hurrying out of the room before her face turned bright red.
"Sorry Paige, I hope I didn't embarrass you." Debbie realised Paige was avoiding eye contact. "I've always been ok with Sonya's choices for her life, and her sisters. But saying that, I think we need to…."
"Need to what?" Sonya interrupted.
"Oh, you're back quickly. I think we need a good bottle of red wine to go with the casserole I'm making for dinner." Debbie was clearly thinking fast.
"Mom, I said we'd take you out to eat." Sonya replied, not believing that she'd forgotten.
"Yes you did, but I want to do this for you. Besides, you love my casserole. We can go out Sunday for lunch before you leave."
"Fine." Sonya didn't want to fight about this. "But we pay for everything."
"I'm not turning down a free meal, if you're that worried about it feel free to get any price wine you want."
Sonya knew this was futile, but she had one last play. "Ok, come on honey, let's go."
"It doesn't take two of you to get a bottle of wine, plus I need help in the kitchen. You go, let me and Paige get to know each other."
Sonya looked at Paige and saw the fear in her eyes. She tried to look reassuring as she approached her and gave her a kiss on the cheek. "I will be as quick as I can. I promise." She said, as she hurried to the car and drove away.
Paige followed Debbie into the kitchen. She watched as Debbie went around, putting various vegetables, herbs and a cut of beef on the counter. Paige knew what was coming, and was so preoccupied she jumped when she saw Debbie had a knife in her hand.
"What's wrong? I just need you to start chopping carrots." Paige blushed, and took the knife offered to her, putting her attention on the carrots while Debbie started preparing the beef.
"Sonya has told me a lot about you, you know." Debbie said as they were working.
"She has?" Paige asked.
"Yes. She is more than a little enamoured with you. Clearly you are important to her. So I think you should know that I did some digging and some googling of my own."
"Oh no." Paige whispered to herself, but not quietly enough.
"Yes, I bet you would say that, because I saw more than enough there to make me think she is making a huge mistake. Sex, drugs, rock and roll, just to say the least. But I'm aware these things get overblown in the media, and the woman my Sonya raves about doesn't sound like that." Debbie paused and saw the despondent look on Paige's face. "Now you have nothing to fear from me, I would never interfere in your relationship, but I need to know, woman to woman, without Sonya here, who you are and what I have to be worried about with you."
Paige took a breath before she started talking. "Debbie. Mrs Deville. I can't tell you that anything written about me isn't true, it is. I've done some stupid things, and although I could blame some of it on circumstances, or people I no longer associate with in any way, I won't. I take responsibility for my actions. But I have taken several steps to distance myself from them, and I can look you in the eye and say that it is in the past. I've gotten back to work, and I have made new friends, plus reconnected with old ones. I don't touch drugs anymore, I only drink on occasion, and I haven't been drunk in a while now. I understand how this would make any parent concerned, but especially here. Sonya is the first woman I have ever been with, I'm sure that has you worried as well, but again I swear on my life, you have nothing to worry about, and nor does she."
"Tell me why. Why do I not need to be concerned this is going to leave her broken hearted, you did it once."
"What? When?" Paige wasn't expecting to hear that.
"You left her with nothing but a note saying you were sorry, then tried to get her to leave you alone. I had to comfort my daughter near on crying down the phone because she thought she had what she dreamed about, only to have it ripped away. What's going to stop you doing it again?"
All work on dinner had halted as Paige felt well and truly on the spot. She thought quickly, but carefully about her words, and had no idea that Sonya had pulled into the driveway, her trip for wine completed in shorter time than expected by anyone.
"That's not fair." Paige responded as Sonya hid out of sight, knowing this was going to have happened. "I could say Sonya overreacted, but I'd be lying. Just like I lied to myself that morning when I took off. I was so scared of my feelings that I ran from them. I'm lucky that I have friends that forced me to accept the truth that I had those feelings for another woman. But thank goodness I did accept it, or I would have lost out on the best thing that has ever happened to me. That's why you have nothing to fear, I promise you. I can't lose her, and I won't do anything that even comes even close to the neighbourhood of risking that. I can't." Paige was on the verge of tears, but she pulled herself together to keep talking.
"The bottom line is I love your daughter. I fell in love with her without even knowing it, and no matter what I tried to do, there was nothing I could do to stop myself being in love with her. Yeah, I was scared to be with her, but now, the only thing in the universe that scares me, is not being with her. I can't lose her, I just can't. She's done more for me that I could ask for, and I will repay her for that some day, I will prove that I am worthy of her faith in me, and yours, if I can ever earn it." Paige realised how she had gotten a little more aggressive than she should have, and took another breath. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean…."
"Yes you did, and I'm glad you did, it's what I needed to hear. It shows that every thing Sonya told me about you is true, and she's not kidding herself in hoping for a future with you."
"Of course I'm not kidding myself." Sonya said, entering the room.
"How much did you hear?" Paige asked, her neck snapping to look at her girlfriend, who walked up to her.
"Only the last bit. I didn't need to hear anything else. Honey, please don't be afraid of losing me, it's never ever happening. I love you more than anything, and now I think my Mom sees why I do." Sonya hugged Paige tight and it was returned just as much.
"She's right. I'm glad you opened up to me, you could have fought me instead. Seems like you've made a good choice Sonya." Debbie said with a smile.
"Thanks Mom, but I don't think it was a choice, as much as it was natural." Paige felt herself blushing again as Debbie came over to her.
"Whatever it was, Paige, welcome to our family." Debbie hugged Paige and it was also returned, which moved Sonya deeply to see it.
"But don't think this gets you out of helping cook, those carrots still need work, and Sonya, potatoes don't peel themselves." The three ladies got back to work and the conversation would get far less intense.
"Would you like any more Paige?" Debbie asked.
"No offence, but I really couldn't eat any more. It was all so good though." Paige said, unable to look at any more food by this point.
"No offence taken. I'll put the rest away, should either of you feel hungry later."
"But Mom, we won't be here tonight." Sonya jumped in quickly.
"We won't?" Paige asked.
"But I thought you were staying a couple of days?" Debbie questioned.
"We are, but I wanted to show Paige the boardwalk tonight, have a bit of fun, kind of a date night, so we won't be back till late."
"Say no more, I remember how much fun you used to have down there when you were young. You both have a great time. Are you ok getting there and back, or would you like a ride?"
"Uh, we will get an Uber back probably, it might be late, but if you're offering a ride over?" Sonya smirked, accepting the offer.
"And as long as you tell more stories about Sonya when she was younger?" Paige suggested, the smirk disappearing off her partners face.
Later that afternoon, Paige was taking a few moments to herself upstairs in their room. It was Sonya's room in earlier years, and still had some of her books and cds around. Paige had noticed a few and planned to bring them up later, with just enough people around to make her girl go bright red. She smirked to herself as she also found herself nearly falling asleep, thanks to a combination of the traveling, and the great meal they had all just shared. She did her best to fight off the desire to sleep, knowing she'd never get up again till morning, and an evening on the Boardwalk really sounded good to her. But she didn't want to go back downstairs yet, she'd make her excuses to give Sonya a little time with her mom, as it had been a while since they'd had the chance.
Another very close call with sleep was interrupted by a bang from the floor. Paige sat up in shock, not sure what it was. She looked for her phone but had no success, quickly realising that the device dropping to the floor must have been the noise.
"If I've broken the screen I'm going to be pissed." She said to herself as she looked over the edge of the bad, but couldn't see it. She checked around but couldn't see the phone anywhere. Slightly confused, she went to the doorway and called out. "Sonya? Babe could you call my phone?"
"Uh sure? How have you lost it, you're never off it?" Was the reply.
"Cheeky cow." Paige said quietly as she waited for the ringtone to play, which it did seconds later, coming from under the bed.
"Of course." Paige exclaimed as she got to to retrieve it. It was just in arms length, but as she got her hand on it, it was the open topped box next to where the phone had ended up that now had Paige's full attention.
Sonya came up to the room and immediately knew what had been found. "Nooo!" She cried.
"I don't believe this." Paige looked up and met Sonya's shocked face.
"I can explain."
"I don't think you need to babygirl, this speaks volumes."
"Paige, please!"
"You're a, you're a dirty girl!"
Sonys felt herself go red in the face, she was mortified. "I forgot this was all stashed here. You weren't meant to find it."
"I wasn't meant to find what exactly Sonya? The ball gag? Handcuffs, sorry, two sets of handcuffs? Geez, why do you even need two, no, never mind. What else is in here? Leg cuffs? A paddle? Duct tape? What wasn't I meant to find exactly?"
"Any of it? All of it! Oh my god!" Sonya was practically in tears, getting distraught in her panic and embarrassment.
"Why didn't you tell me you were into this?"
"I'm not!" Sonya tried, but even she didn't believe what she said. She looked away. "Ok, I am. I had just seen the Fifty Shades movie. I told my girlfriend at the time that I liked the idea of being helpless, or having someone else helpless during sex. So she took me shopping."
"Shopping? You popped into Target? Groceries, new throw pillows and bondage accessories? Is that aisle 69?" Paige smirked, which helped Sonya feel better.
"So you aren't mad?"
"No I'm not mad. We all have our turn ons. I'm just surprised. But if I'm honest, I think this is really…."
"Weird." Sonya interrupted. "I know. I'm sorry I let you find out like this. I should throw all this stuff out."
Before Sonya could move to carry out her intention, Paige pushed her back against the headboard and kissed her hard. "The only place I want you to throw this stuff is into your suitcase."
"What?" Sonya was caught off guard.
"You never let me finish, I wasn't going to say 'Weird', I was going to say it was really sexy." Paige whispered the last two words into Sonya's ear, feeling her shake as she did.
"Sexy?"
"Well, yeah. If this turns you on, then we should include it. Often."
"I didn't think you'd be into it, we haven't been sleeping together that long."
"Well you're wrong. I'm sure you've noticed I really enjoy sex with you, you're the best I've ever had. Now you're telling me that there's a way I can make it even better? Why would I not want that? And I can't say I don't like the concept of being at your mercy, or even better, having you at mine."
Sonya couldn't hide her smile. "So what would you do if you could have me that way?" She spoke so sexily Paige found her irresistible.
"Let's find out." She said, going for the box of toys. But it was that moment Debbie called out.
"Girls, if you want me to drop you at the Boardwalk you better be down here soon!"
Paige and Sonya looked at each other with the same thoughts in the head, and smiles on their faces.
"When we get back?" Paige asked.
"When we get back." Sonya confirmed with enthusiasm, before they both fixed their appearances, not wanting Sonya's mother to know how close they came to ignoring her entirely.
A.N.: Thanks for reading.
