At the same time, I depressingly walked out of Mrs. Greenberg's room, trying to ignore Eddy's glare, which Double D noticed, pulling him back. "Eddy, it's impolite to stare."
"I can stare at him all I want!" Eddy snapped. "It's his fault we're in detention forever!"
On hearing Eddy's words, I hurried into the patio, where I saw that all the tables were full.
I walked past the lunching students, hoping to find a place to sit.
At the same time, Charlie Brown had entered the patio, hoping to do so as well.
On seeing Shanti and Mowgli at one of the tables, he walked up to them, asking. "Excuse me? Can I sit with you?"
Shanti just frowned and turned away.
"Uh, probably be best if you didn't." whispered Mowgli. "She's in a bad mood."
"Oh, OK. I'll try again tomorrow." Charlie Brown said, walking away from the table, when he spotted Sarah and Nazz sitting at another, to which he walked over, asking. "Uh, can I sit here for you?"
"Oh, sorry, dude, but…" Nazz said before Sarah blurted out. "This spot has been reserved...for Jimmy. Besides, who would want to have lunch with someone that's so...wishy-washy?"
Charlie Brown felt dejected as he heard those words.
Having found a seat at one of the benches, I saw Charlie Brown walking away sadly from Sarah and Nazz's table.
He looked up at me, then turned away, thinking that I would turn him down too.
As I watched Charlie Brown go, I realized that he was just as alone as I am in this new school.
"Wait!" I called out.
Charlie Brown looked back to see me scoot over, saying. "You can…sit here if you want to."
Meanwhile, Odette had just looked into the patio to see Charlie Brown sitting next to me, saying. "Thank you."
"You're welcome." I said back.
As I started to eat my lunch, Charlie Brown asked. "Can I...tell you something?"
"Uh...sure." I replied.
"I think lunchtime is about the worst time of day for me. Always having to sit here alone." Charlie Brown began as he looked at the full tables. "Of course, sometimes, mornings aren't so pleasant either. Waking up and wondering if anyone would really miss me if I never got out of bed. Then, there's the night, too. Lying there and thinking about all the stupid things I've done during the day. And all those hours in between when I do all those stupid things."
"I can relate to that, especially after that flying fiasco yesterday." I said while seeing Charlie Brown pull out a sandwich from his bag.
"Some psychiatrists say that people who eat peanut butter sandwiches are lonely." he explained with a sigh. "I guess they're right. And when you're really lonely, the peanut butter sticks to the roof of your mouth."
I watched Charlie Brown eat his sandwich uneasily, then at what I have in my lunchbox, which I held out, saying. "Here. You can also what's in there if you want."
Charlie Brown looked inside my lunchbox.
"Are those Pringles in there?" he asked, pointing at the little box of potato chips.
I smiled a bit as I said. "They're all yours."
Odette smiled as she watched me hand out the Pringles to Charlie Brown.
"Would you look at that?" Linus said to his sister, Lucy as they both watched as well. "Charlie Brown actually found someone to have lunch with."
"Which is not supposed to happen!" Lucy added with a frown.
"What's with you, Lucy?" asked Linus. "Why are you against anyone accomplishing anything?"
"Because, otherwise, the world would end." replied Lucy. "Now, come. We have better things to do than to have lunch with...them."
She grabbed ahold of Linus' blanket, dragging him out of the patio and past Odette.
