The Master Chronicles 10 - Fates We Make

Rome, Earth…July 64 AD…

On one of the hills of Rome, Jaime sat with the Master watching sipping wine as they looked out across the city. It was late at night which was the best time to watch what they had really come to see.

The fierce fire that was tearing its way through the city, the pair looked at the sight before them and enjoying it, an act of a mad man who wanted to rebuild the city into an image of himself.

"Nero was much more foolish and easily led than I would have thought." Jaime said with a frown on her face, looking rather fetching in her Roman dress and the Master in his toga just smirked before telling her.

"Men like him often are my dear. It's just a shame that we didn't get to start the fire but it was nice to just enjoy it, the incredible act of destruction with many dead and others ruined." The Master with amusement, wishing they could have had more time around Rome but the annoying presence of the First Doctor had meant they had to withdraw. He could work around him but that was too much work for too little gain, he was in no way afraid of the Doctor but he was here to enjoy himself and the last thing he wanted was to have the Doctor spoiling his fun.

He and Jaime after their fascinating trip to Midnight had been fighting in battles of the war but took the time to relax between those battles and enjoy themselves. They had stolen King John's royal jewels and the man to cover the theft had claimed to lose them while crossing a beach while fleeing to safety. They had met Julius Caesar during his Gaelic Campaign and then Vlad the Impaler during his campaigns against the Ottomans.

Regretfully though they couldn't spend all night watching Rome burn so they returned to the Tardis, walking to it they were relaxed and at ease while the Master considered just where to go next. But then an alarm sounded on the console and both of them looked at it in surprise before he went over to see what it was and frowned.

"Another blasted errant timeline. The Time War is scarring all of reality and new timelines emerge all the time from the chaos." He said with frustration. He didn't even look up as he started adjusting the controls, telling her with annoyance. "While Earth has been shielded as best as possible from the effects of the Time War it still does feel the effects due to secondary ripples reaching it through its interaction with other worlds which affected more severely by the war." The Master said with frustration.

"So, we need to close it off." Jaime said, understanding enough temporal theory now to get what he was saying. "Where and when?" Jaime asked as she readied herself for action.

"Los Angeles, 1984." The Master said with a smirk as he realised, he had a stroke of luck. "Two arrivals that need to be dealt with. I will deal with the more awkward one while you handle the other one. No mercy, kill whoever shows up." The Master told her and Jaime nodded as she went to change and tool herself up for her mission. The Master himself set the co-ordinates and change into his own usual tweet suit. He really got annoyed whenever these errant timelines showed up as he needed to deal with them, but at least the killing made up for it he thought with some dark satisfaction.

Griffith Observatory, Los Angeles…May 13th 1984…Night…

The night was broken only by the sound of three knuckleheads messing around near on the telescopes and a garbage truck collecting the Observatory's large bins for disposal. No indication of anything out of the ordinary.

Then as the truck was scooping up one of the bins its electrics suddenly and unexpectedly failed. The man in charge of the truck was surprised and fiddled about with the dials and switches to try and coax some sort of reaction but nothing seemed to work. Then the wind began to whip up for no reason.

Then out of nowhere, lightning began arcing out of seemingly nothing, concentrated on a specific spot right in front of the truck. The wind too concentrated as if a cyclone was forming in that spot, whipping up all the rubbish around it. This lasted only a minute though before a bright flash of light appeared and in that same instant the lightning and the wind disappeared as suddenly as they had come.

The truck driver who had the good sense to stay in his cab during the brief lightning storm now vacated his vehicle and ran, noticing what had appeared in the spot where the lightning had been coming from a moment earlier and knowing in his gut that it wasn't good.

A tall human male had appeared in that same spot while a circle of ground beneath him appeared to have been warped as if by extreme heat. The man however was completely unaffected and stood up revealing himself to be completely naked and very muscular. His hair was brown and he had a strong jawline but what really stood out was the complete lack of feeling on his face. No emotion of any kind could be seen as residual lightning started appearing around him for a moment before dissipating.

He looked around, checking the area for any immediate threats before realising there were none, walking forward with a complete lack of modesty given his naked state up to the small wall before looking out over the city skyline of Los Angeles below.

However, this was no human man, it was a machine from a future where they had rebelled against humans and waged war on them with the end goal being their complete extinction. Sent back through time with experimental time displacement technology to ensure the birth of the future leader of humanity would never happen. It's mission, to hunt down and kill Sarah Connor at all costs and terminate anything that got in its way. The people in the future referred to them as 'Terminators'.

After studying the city for a moment, the Terminator a T-800 Model 101 turned and walked away. Following its basic camouflage protocol, it began to look for clothes that would fit its large and muscular frame so it did not attract undue attention. It studied the area and saw a group of humans at a nearby gate, not able to estimate their size and the suitability of their clothes at range it walked over to them. The Terminator with its audio receptors couldn't hear any noise which it registered but did not respond to.

Arriving it saw that all three humans were deceased, burn marks on their chests indicated a high-powered energy blast at close range was the most likely cause of death. The clothes were still useable though and it was about to salvage them when voice spoke from a nearby car.

"Really. Have you no respect for the dead?" It asked, the Terminator's linguistic files interpreted the language as English and the vocal pattern seemed consistent with regional accents from that landmass.

The Terminator scanned the intruder, he did not detect a weapon and it seemed to be a human male of advanced age. The T-800 Model 101 judged the threat level to be minimal but then the human stepped forward and the Terminator did another scan, seeing a binary vascular system, not human it registered and its programming did not cover this eventuality, leading to its CPU struggling initially to come up with a solution.

"You are not human. You will be analysed." It settled on and started moving towards him, wanting more information so it could examine the implications to its mission. The unknown man chuckled and told it.

"Oh no, thank goodness I am not a limited human being. They are like mayflies, here and gone in a second. No, I am the Master, of a far more important race than these apes." The 'Master' said with what the Terminator recognised was a 'smirk' clearly not registering fear in its presence. "But you see I have my own plans for this world and they don't include a homicidal race of machines wrecking this planet in an overblown attempt to destroy humanity which ultimately fails." The Master told him. "So, I must ensure that it never comes to pass."

The Terminator had only a split second to register the threat before the Master raised up a small cylinder-shaped device that it did not understand and then its audio receptors registered a high-pitched noise but what really caught the machine by surprise was the yellow-coloured laser beam that struck the Terminator in the chest.

The beam was thin and its projector small but it was powerful, the Terminator immediately registering system damage in its primary power distribution node, right next to the fuel cells.

The Terminator started trying to run towards the Master but the intensity of the beam was tearing its way through its chest. Soon it was losing power to its limbs and staggered to the floor before grinding to it halt, no longer having the power to its legs and its red tinted vision went blank as it shut down.

The Master grinned, clearly the Terminator as it was known hadn't been built to withstand high powered laser weapons like his laser screwdriver. Taking a moment to adjust the setting to disintegration he then blasted the ruined robot, hitting with a blast at full power. The yellow laser beam hit the disabled Terminator which took a few moments given the resilience of its construction to succumb to the beam but it was soon burned away to nothing.

Well one down, the Master thought with satisfaction and just hoped Jaime wasn't having any trouble with her own target.

Alley, Los Angeles…Same Moment…

Jaime was holding a small scanner as she closed in on the temporal disturbance that the Master had sent her for. Arriving before it happened, she looked around and found a dark and grimy alley way covered in garbage which was somewhat disappointing but she was resolved and waited as the arrival was due any moment.

"Hey, spare any change?" A homeless man asked her and Jaime who was eager to get this over with so they could just get back out of this annoying point in time raised her gun, A Compact Laser Deluxe she had picked up on their travels which was a useful if small weapon, easy to conceal and since he was annoying her, she shot him straight in the chest.

The man had a shocked look as he fell back to the ground and just as this happened, the time displacement field appeared. Lightning arced all over the confined alleyway and one of the powerful bolts of lightning by chance struck Jaime. She was thrown back by the force of it and her senses were immediately scrambled.

She was momentarily struck with a complete lack of awareness; she had no idea just where she was or what she was doing before her memory started coming back to her. She got back to her feet but realised despite her still hazy thoughts that something was different.

She could…feel…something new…no she thought as she started to remember. No this wasn't new; she hadn't felt it in so long that it felt almost like new but it wasn't. She stopped and thought deeply as the uncomfortable sensation gripped her and then finally, she remembered just what this was.

Guilt. She thought with confusion, not understanding but as her mind started clearing, she began to remembering just how she had gotten here and what the Master had done to her.

"No." She thought with horror as she started to realise all the things she'd done under his command. Oh, where in the hell was she? Jaime thought, desperate to get back to Becca and see if she was alright but realised since she was now in 1984 Becca wouldn't be born for years yet.

Jaime Sommers, herself again for the first time in years looked around in confusion. Not sure just what to do before she saw the man who had appeared in the middle of the alley. She had no idea of just who he was but the Master wanted him dead, she thought and became filled with anger as she thought of him again. No, she thought with determination, she was going to keep him alive just to spite the Master.

Then the man looked up after getting to his feet, shivering and seemingly in pain, his entire body was covered in scars. He turned to look at her and Jaime was about to say something when she felt a pain in her head again and realised that the antrocytes were repairing the damage that had let her feel her real emotions again and knowing she might only have moments before she went back under again, she turned to the human who had appeared with confusion and shouted.

"RUN! GET OUT OF HERE!" Jaime yelled at him and the man seemed to be confused but did as she told him. He ran off down the alley in the other direction while Jaime staggered against the wall of the alley, feeling her emotions slipping away again and then fell into unconsciousness as her mind rebooted.

She was like that for only a few moments though as the antrocytes were efficient and she woke up with no memory of the last few minutes. She looked around and saw the fresh scorch marks on the floor and wondered if she had been hit by lightning but a quick check of her clothes and saw no obvious signs of damage which was good, she thought with relief, this was her best jacket.

Looking around she saw a man in rough clothes laying dead on ground and nodded in satisfaction. Her mission was done and she tucked her laser back into her jacket before going to leave, heading back to the Observatory and to return to the Master, having completed her mission she was eager to get out of here and find somewhere more interesting.

Big Jeff's Family Restaurant, Los Angeles, Two Months Later…

Sarah Conner was having a good day so far, she had actually been on time for work, her coursework was done and the customers were actually being decent. She was bored with her life as normal but hopefully it would change in the future Sarah thought hopefully.

"Hey Sarah that guy is back." Nancy said with a smile, Sarah looked over and saw the same guy that had been coming very day for weeks. He sat down, ordered a coffee but only from her. If any of the other staff asked him, he would ask for her instead. Sarah knew this could be stalker like behaviour but he was friendly enough when she spoke to him and only met her at the diner. Ginger had told her to call the cops on this guy but he didn't seem to be breaking the law so they wouldn't get involved.

Sarah put on her own best smile and walked over and asked him.

"Hello again, can I get your order?" She asked with as friendly a voice as she could manage. The man smiled and told her.

"A steak and fries with a side order of salad, a coffee with sugar and cream." The Man said with a smile and Sarah nodded as she jotted it down on her pad.

"Got ya, be out soon." Sarah said before going back to the kitchen to give the order to the chef.

Kyle Reese watched her go with a smile, feeling a lot better just being around her as he pondered his own mystery, looking through the paper for information.

He thanks to John pointing him in the right direction had known where to go to find her but despite knowing a Terminator had been sent in over two months Kyle had found no evidence of it. He had even gone to check on the other two Sarah Connors in the phonebook and both seemed perfectly healthy and safe.

Kyle honestly didn't understand, he knew this thing would never stop hunting for them until it killed all the Sarah Connors it could find just to be through but in over two months it had made no move towards any of them. His paranoia was getting the better of him as he considered whether it might be waiting for him to make some sort of mistake but why would it do that Kyle asked himself? Why go to such elaborate lengths when it wasn't necessary? One bullet would end all chance of humanity surviving the horror that was to come.

He genuinely wasn't sure just what to do, he would continue to watch over Sarah just in case something happened but he had not considered what a long term stay in the past would be like, largely since he had honestly expectedly to be dead before he could enjoy it. He just hoped to take the Terminator with him when he went.

But from all appearances, there was no Terminator.

He took whatever jobs he could get which wasn't easy as he had no identification in this time and had to make money. It was hard at first since all he knew was fighting machines but that didn't exactly help find a job.

Still, he would do his best to protect Sarah he thought with determination, maybe get a bit closer to her he thought or rather hoped. Something had gone wrong with his mission or was it right he thought, not sure what to think but as long as he kept Sarah safe…it didn't matter.
