Signy Freyda, 15

District 10 Female

The wind was howling outside their little lean-to and Signy's fingers felt stiff with cold, despite her gloves. White clouds puffed out in front of her with every breath and she pulled her hood tighter around her face.

She guessed it was around five or six in the morning, judging by the lightening sky, but it was hard to tell because of the gray clouds. She'd been up for several hours now, on watch while Braulia and Ace slept behind her. She longed to be curled up with them, huddled for warmth, but it was important to leave someone on guard.

Signy watched the snow blow past, clenching her teeth to keep from shivering. Snow was beautiful, but in large amounts like this, it was also miserable. She longed to be back in warm District 10, even on its most sweltering days.

She felt one of her allies stir behind her and shifted away to give them more room to sit up.

"Good morning," Braulia said sleepily, crawling forward to sit beside Signy. "Did anything interesting happen?"

Signy opened her mouth to say 'no' when a cannon fired loudly, briefly drowning out the sound of the wind. She felt Ace jump behind her.

"What happened?" she asked, her voice slightly slurred from sleep.

"I don't know," Signy said, slowly reaching for her cleaver. But the minutes passed with no further disturbance.

Braulia was the first to relax, letting a yawn escape as she dug through their bags for food. She passed each of them an apple and a few pieces of jerky. A small but healthy breakfast.

After they ate, the girls mostly sat in silence. Signy felt completely drained of energy, and it wasn't just from a lack of sleep. She felt as if part of who she was had been sucked from her, taken by some all-powerful being who used it for their own gain. And in a way, she was right. It was the Capitol who put them here, taking their humanity and their will to live.

Braulia started a conversation several times and Ace reluctantly joined in, but Signy stayed quiet. She listened to the wind and thought of her mom and Cady. She missed them so much it hurt. But she knew she'd have to endure a lot more pain if she was going to see them again.

As much as Signy liked her allies, and as much as she wanted to be a good person, she knew she would do anything to win. She never wanted to betray them, but if it was down to the three of them, she'd kill Ace and Braulia. It brought tears to her eyes, but they froze on her lashes.

Around noon, the storm cleared up, revealing a pale, sunny sky. The girls took the opportunity to stretch and warm up a little. Braulia went off to pick some more blackberries, which they all happily snacked on.

"We're running a little low on water," Ace noted. She'd been organizing their supplies while Braulia made a snow angel.

"I can go get some," Signy offered. As much as she appreciated her allies' company, she could use some quiet time.

"Okay. But be careful," Ace told her, passing over the two water bottles and the water filter.

"I will," Signy promised.

She set off towards the east, where the sun rose over the mountains. They'd been rationing the water and eating snow, but that wasn't a good way to stay hydrated. She hiked through the thick snow, across the hilly landscape.

After about twenty minutes, Signy came to the top of a small hill overlooking an icy lake. It looked like she could easily get water from the edges without venturing too far out onto the ice. Perfect.

As she went to make her way down the hill, something slammed into her from behind, sending her sprawling. Her cleaver fell from her hand, quickly getting lost in the snow. Someone grabbed her hair in a tight fist and pulled back. Yelping in pain, Signy squirmed and thrashed, but her attacker had a tight grip.

Moving more on instinct than anything else, Signy heaved up and rolled sideways, pushing her attacker off of her and into the snow. She rolled off of them and scrambled to her feet, looking around desperately for her weapon.

Beside her, the other tribute got up and Signy turned just in time to avoid a punch to the face. She recognized the tribute as Ariadne, the small, scary girl from 8 who gave creepy answers during her interview. She gave Signy the shivers back then, and she knew not to underestimate her now.

Ariadne didn't have any visible weapons on her, and Signy's was buried in the snow somewhere. So she squared her shoulders and got ready for a fistfight. Ariadne charged at her, grabbing her around the waist and tackling her.

The two girls rolled down the hill as Ariadne scratched and clawed at Signy's face. She felt a few small cuts open up and drove her knee into Ariadne's stomach. The younger girl huffed loudly and loosened her grip.

Kicking her again, Signy awkwardly pulled out from underneath her and crawled backwards across the snowy ground. Ariadne stood up and prepared to run at her again. With a gasp, Signy felt her hand break through the ice and plunge into the freezing lake. As Ariadne began to run, an idea flashed through her mind.

Signy reached up to grab Ariadne's ankle as she came to stomp down on her. She tugged, throwing the girl off balance. Ariadne crashed down onto the ice, her body heavy enough to crack it with ease. Rolling over, Signy fisted Ariadne's hair and pressed her face into the water.

Ariadne struggled and thrashed, but Signy dug her knees into her opponent's back and held her still. Her fighting grew weaker and weaker and eventually she fell still. But Signy didn't release her until her cannon rang out.

Immediately, Signy scrambled away from the icy water. It had soaked into her gloves, but her pants had repelled it fairly well. Her fingers were dangerously numb though. She pulled off her gloves and shoved them in her pocket, rubbing her hands together and wiggling her fingers to get the blood flowing again. Slowly, the feeling began to return to them.

In a daze, she staggered away from the lake and collected the fallen water bottles. Using the water filter, she carefully filled each bottle before hunting down her cleaver. The ordinary tasks were keeping her calm, but panic and fear were flickering in the back of her mind. She trudged to the top of the hill and watched the hovercraft materialize to carry Ariadne's body away.

Still shivering violently, Signy made her way back to their camp. She was almost there when Ace burst through the trees, ax at the ready. But she dropped it when she saw Signy and rushed to support her instead.

"What happened?" she gasped.

"The girl from 8 attacked me," Signy said quietly. "She's gone now."

Ace picked up on the subtlety in her words.

"I'm glad you're okay," she said. "Now, let's get you warmed up."

Hi everyone! It's been quite a while since I updated this story. I'm focusing more on SYOTs than on victor exchanges, but I will get them done! So here's the next chapter of Signy's story! I wrote this quickly, so I apologize if there are any mistakes. But please leave a review and let me know what you think! Reviews are super appreciated :)

Have a nice day, be kind to each other, and never stop reading!
