This is a short story based on characters that I do not own and references to established works.
"Like Two Turtle Doves"
"Thanks for apologizing to Joss," Trina said to Spencer as they left the Metro Court Pool for the last time this summer.
"No problem. I'm glad that you can help me see when I'm being an insensitive jerk, when I can't see it myself," Spencer replied as he and Trina walked hand-in-hand to their respective cars.
"Well, you're my jerk, so I guess that's part of my job," Trina laughed.
As they got closer to their cars, Spencer wrapped Trina in a gentle embrace, followed by a soft kiss. "I don't want this day to end," he said softly, while Trina's head rested on his chest.
Despite her eyes remaining closed because she felt so at home in Spencer's arms, Trina replied, "Neither do I. Does it have to?"
"Absolutely not. What would you say to an early dinner and a surprise or two?" Spencer responded as he loosened the embrace and looked at Trina directly.
"I'd say yes-if I knew where this early dinner and surprise would be taking place," Trina said in a more serious, but non-threatening tone.
"Well, I guess I figured that we would go to my grandmother's. Why, did you have someplace in mind?" Spencer asked cluelessly.
Trina felt something inside her bubble up at the mention of Laura's place. While she appreciated Spencer's idea of dinner and a surprise, the thought of sharing those things in the same place where Esme made her home was just too much for her. Spencer could tell that something had suddenly taken over his girlfriend's mind, so he stood there and waited for her to speak.
"Not someplace, Spencer. Just anyplace but the place you share with Esme. I just can't do it anymore. I know that it was my idea to have the DA set the charges against her aside for the time being, but this is not how I planned on things working out. I did not expect Esme to become a part of us and our time together. But, she did and she has-and... and I need for her not to be everywhere we are. Can you understand that, Spencer?" Trina asked as she took hold of her boyfriend's hands.
"Thank you, Trina," Spencer replied.
A confused Trina asked, "Why are you thanking me?"
"For once again helping me to see, when I'm being an insensitive jerk. And suggesting a dinner with surprises and Esme? Truly insensitive jerk thinking on my part," Spencer answered, as Trina laughed. She was glad that he had broken through the tension that her honesty had created.
"Well, no one can ever accuse me of not doing my job," Trina responded playfully.
"I know that I've put you through a lot with this living situation, especially since Grandmother and Kevin have been away. So, for my first surprise, I've touched base with the realtor from earlier this year and she's got two places lined up for me to look at. And if, no, scratch that, when I choose one of them, I will move out the very day that Grandmother and Kevin return," Spencer revealed.
In no time at all, Trina threw her arms around Spencer and squealed with delight, "Now, that's what I call a great surprise! I don't know how anything could top that."
"Well, I'm certainly going to try," Spencer replied. Afterwards, they agreed to meet back at the Metro Court. Spencer let Trina know that dinner and surprise number two, or three, would be there. A quick kiss and a good-bye sent Spencer and Trina on their separate ways.
Some time later, Spencer and Trina arrived back at the Metro Court. Trina was a vision in the short, figure-hugging pink dress that she had worn to her parents' rehearsal dinner party. She had worn it especially for Spencer since he had yet to see her in it-at least she did not think he had. She was unaware that he had indeed caught a glimpse of her that night at the Savoy. Despite that, Spencer was thoroughly captivated by Trina's beauty and presence. Knowing that he had built this night up as a big deal, Spencer made sure to dress for it. Trina's breath was taken away when she saw Spencer in a not-too tight, but just tight enough black buttoned-up shirt and a pair of nicely tailored black pants. He carried his jacket over his arm.
"When you clean up, you clean up well, ," Trina said, as they neared each other.
"Well, when I've got a beauty like you on my arm, I've definitely got to do my part," Spencer replied, as he kissed Trina's hand.
"May I?" Spencer asked, as he offered his arm to Trina.
"Of course," Trina replied as they made their way inside to a nice corner table. After a delicious dinner, peppered with a delightful non-Esme and non-Ace conversation, Spencer was so heartened by the smile that had not left Trina's face since they had arrived.
"Well, are you ready for your next surprise?" Spencer asked.
"Spencer, this night has been perfect. So, I can only imagine that the surprise will only take it to the next level. So...so of course I'm ready!" Trina giggled happily.
"Alright then. Let's get to it. Trina, I hope that you know how important you are to me. The night when we agreed that we were "together", while also being the night that we ended up on our way to Greenland, has got to be one of the best nights of my life. I had wanted that for so long and to be here with you, still, means so much to me," Spencer started, as Trina's eyes glistened as tears appeared.
"In you, Trina Robinson, I know that I have found my other half, and I hope that in me, you have found yours," Spencer said, as he looked for validation of that in Trina's eyes. He saw it, especially as she replied softly, "I have."
Upon hearing that, Spencer exhaled, as he pulled a box from his jacket pocket. Trina watched intently as Spencer opened the box, which held two white turtle doves.
"Spencer, they're beautiful," Trina proclaimed.
"As are you. One is for you and the other is for me. These doves are a matching pair and, like them, we belong together. Despite coming from my great-uncle Cyrus by way of my great-uncle Victor-don't ask, it's a long story- these doves also represent a time last year when I couldn't be with you the way that I wanted, and..." Spencer started.
"Stop. That time is behind us now. We're together, because as you said, we belong together," Trina said, as Spencer's eyes now welled up with tears.
With the doves exchanged and accepted, along with heartfelt confessions, Spencer Cassadine and Trina Robinson sealed a most special night with a kiss full of passion and, as yet undeclared, love.
