A/N: Welcome everyone! Hope you found me okay. No prologue this time so the chapter numbers will actually match up! LOL! As the tag line says, this sequel picks up right where The Milagro Courtesy Card (TMCC from this point on when I reference the original story) left off. The first part of this chapter was inspired by Jamko's storyline in Season 11 Episode 9: For Whom The Bell Tolls – so let's get to it shall we? Enjoy!
Chapter 1: All in the Details
In what is quickly becoming her new morning routine, Eddie bolts off the bed and runs for the bathroom. As she does, she doesn't even notice her husband is already up and out of bed…
She lunges for the toilet and throws up. As she lifts herself up, she awkwardly reaches up trying to find the tissue box on the counter but can't.
"It's here now." Jamie's voice sounds.
Looking up slightly, Eddie sees her husband in the doorway. He crouches down and points to a little basket on a small table at a lower height. Inside the basket is the tissue box, one of Eddie's hair scrunchies and a bottle of water. She can't help but pout a little at his thoughtfulness. "Thank you." She mutters as she reaches for a tissue to wipe her mouth before grabbing the bottle of water. She moves to lean herself against the wall opposite the toilet before opening the bottle and taking a few gulps but then she drops her head back against the wall, closes her eyes and groans as she feels the water already begin to not sit well with her churning stomach.
Jamie cringes at seeing her look "Here." He then offers as he reaches over, picks up a pillow from just outside the door causing Eddie to open her eyes and look at him. He motions for Eddie to move away from the wall so he can place the pillow behind her back.
"Ugh. Thank you." She repeats again in appreciation as she closes her eyes trying to ready herself for the next coming wave. As she does, she places the water bottle on the floor and her hand touches something soft not the cold hard floor she's become well acquainted with. She again opens her eyes and looks down "When did we get a floor mat in here?"
"It's one of those memory foam ones." Jamie explains "Just thought it would make your butt more comfortable than sitting on the cold hard floor."
"Forget the butt." Eddie breathes out as she grabs the pillow behind her and simply lays down and curls up into a ball on the mat with the pillow under her head. "Be careful there Reagan." She breathes out as she settles down "I could get used to this." She adds as she hopes laying down will let her stomach settle.
Jamie smiles at her calling him 'Reagan' "You want a blankie too?" He muses.
Eddie pops her eyes open and shoots him a look.
"No seriously you want a blanket?" Jamie asks as he again reaches to just outside the door, picks up and then offers his wife a small throw blanket.
"Oh my god I love you." Eddie breathes out "Give me that." She demands.
Smiling, Jamie opens the throw up and gently covers his wife.
"Maybe I'll just sleep here from now on." Eddie ponders as she closes her eyes again "So much more convenient."
"You need anything else?" Jamie inquires.
"No, thank you and I mean seriously Jamie, thank you."
Even though Eddie had her eyes closed and couldn't see him, Jamie nods in acceptance. He turns to walk away but then pauses "Um breakfast?" He inquires.
Again, Eddie groans "I have no idea." She states when suddenly even the thought of food triggers her next wave "Ugh!" She cries as she throws the cover off.
Jamie quickly reaches for the scrunchie to offer it out to her "Scrun..." he begins but Eddie just lunges for the toilet and throws up.
"…chie…" Jamie finishes in defeat.
Without looking at him, Eddie swipes the elastic out of his hand and pulls her hair back before repeating her entire process of grabbing another tissue, flushing, grabbing her water bottle and settling down to rest on her pillow and mat with the blanket all over again.
"Please don't mention food." She begs as she closes her eyes.
Jamie cringes slightly "Sorry."
Silence.
"So just to confirm you don't need anything else?" Jamie inquires.
"No, I don't think so." Eddie mutters.
"Okay well I'm gonna head into work then…"
Eddie slowly opens her eyes to look at her husband and it hits her "You gonna give me RIP for showing up late to work?"
Jamie crinkles his face up in confusion "No, why would you think I would?"
"Well you gave uh what was his name again? Davis…Diablo… Demiteriv? a RIP for showing up late when his wife was pregnant.
Jamie sighs "It was Diaz…" he corrects "And you're the one actually sick here."
"And you're going to leave me here while you go to work." Eddie tries to clarify.
"Because you just said you didn't need anything else." Jamie slowly replies.
"So if I said I did need something, you would stay?" Eddie questions.
Jamie eyes his wife "Is there a right answer here? I feel like this is a trick question."
"No trick question." Eddie insists "If I needed you to stay, would you?"
"Yes." Jamie simply replies.
"Even if that means you're late?" Eddie presses.
Jamie sighs knowing where she is going with this "Yes." He again states.
"Interesting." Eddie mutters.
"I know what you're thinking Eddie but the situations are completely different." Jamie insists.
"How?"
"Because we aren't in patrol anymore. Either of us." Jamie points out. "We don't have to worry about making roll calls and set shifts."
"But if we were..."
"BUT WE AREN'T!"
"Humor me." Eddie deadpans.
"No, I'm not going to humor you." Jamie rejects. "Now do you need me to stay or not?"
"Go." Eddie sighs with a hint of annoyance in her voice "I'll be fine."
Jamie eyes his wife trying to decide his next move then the next second he crouchs down next to his wife, leans down and places a quick kiss on her temple "I love you." he states before kissing his hand and placing it on Eddie's stomach "And you." He adds in reference to the baby before getting up and disappearing from view.
"You see that?" Eddie states as she looks down at her stomach "That right there is why we can't stay mad at Daddy." She admits as a small smile creeps up onto her face "Now behave down there so Mommy can rest a bit more before getting up. …How is it I'm even saying that while curled up on the bathroom floor…" Eddie admits in wonder as she recloses her eyes "…I have no idea but damn this is comfortable…"
Suddenly Jamie pops his head back into the bathroom "You still good?"
Eddie pops her eyes back open "I thought you left?"
"Not yet so just checking in."
"You were here what? 30 seconds ago?" Eddie points out.
"Lots can happen in 30 seconds." Jamie counters "Mugging, shooting, car accident..."
"While I'm laying here on the bathroom floor?" Eddie challenges.
"Earthquake, ceiling cave in, pipe bursting." Jamie adds "Oh toilet could overflow - that one is completely possible with the way you've been heaving into it."
"Gee thanks." Eddie flatly replies before closing her eyes again.
"I'm just saying…" Jamie admits "…if you need me to stay…"
"Jamie, I'll be fine." Eddie promises "Seriously. Go."
"Okay but don't say I didn't offer…"
"I know, I know now go…" Eddie insists as she lifts one hand and absently makes a shooing gesture "…you're disrupting my sleep!"
"On the bathroom floor?" Jamie questions.
"Yes the bathroom floor." Eddie insists as she resettles herself into the mat and pillow and pulls the cover around her "If you don't like it, you should not have made it so comfortable for me!"
A grin creeps up onto Jamie's face.
"Stop grinning." Eddie chides without even looking at him "But Daddy did good didn't he Baby? Yes he did."
Suddenly Eddie hears the snap of a phone camera. She pops her eyes open to see Jamie standing there aiming his phone at her "What are you doing?"
"For the baby album." Jamie simply explains with a grin "You curled up on the bathroom floor definitely needs to be documented." He laughs.
"And that right there Baby is also why Daddy can be so infuriating. Get used to it. I have."
"So we're talking to the baby now huh?"
"No I'm talking to the toilet." Eddie deadpans "I named it Baby."
"Cranky." Jamie counters.
"Did you just call your pregnant wife that is curled up on the bathroom floor trying not to throw up cranky?" Eddie warns.
"I did…" Jamie admits "…and I'm going to pay for that aren't I?"
"In so many ways…" Eddie promises "But later because again, trying to nap here so... shoo."
"Okay text me if you're coming in." Jamie states before disappearing from view and Eddie settles in to nap.
Silence.
"Hmm Baby album…" Eddie mutters in thought.
….
Later that morning, Eddie walks into the bullpen. She sees Danny and Maria's desks empty as well as Jamie's office.
"Well…" She heavily sighs as she walks up to her desk and plops her purse down onto it "Guess I better get used to being stuck here by myself."
She looks around wondering what to do. She sees a couple of files on Danny's desk so she walks over picks one up and opens it "Ugh he still hasn't filled this out?" She questions "I don't know why I'm surprised, I shouldn't be surprised…" she mutters as she opens the next one and just shakes her head. She picks up the entire stack and moves to her desk. She sits down, picks up a pen and gets to work completing the forms.
….
"I am telling you, it wasn't me!" Danny insists as he walks into the bullpen with Maria.
"Well it must have been." Maria counters as they walk up to their desks "You're the one that had it last!"
"Maybe it was Jamie." Danny reasons before stopping short and looking at his desk "Um.. who's been messing with my desk?" He inquires as he immediately notices things are straight, neat and organized.
Maria looks at her desk "Um me too…" She admits as she sees her desk looks overly organized as well.
"OW!" They suddenly hear a familiar female voice exclaim from Jamie's office.
Danny and Maria look at one another "Eddie." They agree in unison before they both curiously walk to Jamie's office to see her sitting in Jamie's chair rubbing the back of her head.
"Eddie?" Danny immediately questions in concern "You okay?"
"I'm fine." Eddie grumbles.
"What happened?" Maria inquires.
"Dropped my pen on the floor…" Eddie explains "…then bumped my head on the desk coming back up."
"Oh." Danny accepts as he continues to eye her "You sure you're okay?" he presses.
Eddie slowly turns her head to look at him "Yeah I'm fine." She reiterates.
Maria's desk phone starts to ring "Excuse me." Maria states as she heads out to answer it.
"You're positive?" Danny presses to his sister in law again "No seeing stars? Lightheadedness? Nausea?"
Eddie looks at Danny a moment in confusion as to why he's asking so many question but then the light bulb goes off in her head "Oh now I get it." She realizes "Stop channeling your brother." She demands.
"Hey you're carrying precious cargo over there so if he's not here then it's my job too…"
Eddie immediately holds up her hand "Stop!" She demands "First stop it with the precious cargo bit…" She hushes out in a rush as she glances back out into the bullpen and over to Maria "Anyone can just suddenly walk up and hear you."
Danny scrunches his face up in rejection "If you mean Baez, I can hear her, she's still on the phone. Why are you even in here?"
"Because…" Eddie explains "…I was making a doctor's appointment and didn't want anyone hearing me!"
Suddenly Jamie walks up to his office and stops short in the doorway "Hi…" He slowly greets to his brother and wife "Did I schedule a meeting and then forget about it?"
"See he just walked up!" Eddie points out to her brother in law.
Danny dismissively waves his hand "Yeah but he's the father, he doesn't count."
"Excuse me?" Jamie states in disbelief.
"I just meant…" Danny explains "This is your office and you're the father so it's not like we're trying to keep it a secret that she has a bun in the oven from you."
Jamie looks between his wife and brother.
"Here." Eddie states as she rips a piece of paper off a note pad from Jamie's desk and holds it out to her husband "I made a doctor's appointment."
Jamie reaches over, takes the paper and looks at it "Got it." He accepts before looking up at his brother "You will be in charge of perps during that time."
"Aren't I usually anyway though?" Danny points out.
"Someone forget to invite me to the team meeting?" Maria's voice sounds as she walks up.
Jamie, Danny and Eddie all look over to her.
"I was wondering the same thing myself when I walked up to my office to find these too in here without me." Jamie immediately replies.
Danny looks at his brother but points at Eddie "She hit her head." He tells him.
"What?" Jamie immediately questions in concern as he looks at his wife "You okay?"
Eddie throws her hand up in defeat at their combined over protectiveness.
Maria looks weirdly between Danny and Jamie "She's a cop that goes out every day to deal with the worst of the worst crime this city has to offer…" Maria slowly states "…and suddenly you two are fussing over her simply knocking her head a little on the desk from picking up a pen?"
"No we're not." Danny immediately rejects.
"She's my wife." Jamie immediately defends "I'm allowed to do that."
"Never see you do it before." Maria points out "In fact you're usually the first one to just let her do stuff on her own because you know she can. It's what makes you two unique on the job."
"I'm thirsty." Eddie suddenly interrupts as she gets up "Anyone else thirsty?"
"Parched!" Jamie immediately agrees.
"I could use some coffee." Danny flippantly decides as all three simply disappear out of the office leaving Maria to narrow her eyes in contemplation as she watches them all walk away.
….
"Okay you two need to tone it down." Eddie demands the second they get into the empty breakroom "If you don't, she's going to figure it out fast! And the more people that know, the greater the chance others find out and that ruins it for ME getting to tell people the way I want to tell them, you understand me? ME! I get to tell people!"
"We get to tell people." Jamie corrects.
Eddie turns her head and glares at her husband.
"Shutting up now." Jamie mumbles.
"Baez is very good at what she does." Danny admits.
"Okay now go back to your desk." Eddie demands of Danny "The last thing I want to have happen here is Maria think we three Reagans are keeping secrets from her."
"But we are." Danny points out "Because you just said we have to."
Jamie shakes his head at his brother in disbelief "You can't possibly have thought that was a good idea to say out loud."
"FINE!" Eddie throws out "I'll go back to my desk then! It's where I'm going to live for the next 9…"
But suddenly Jamie starts to loudly and repeatedly cough drowning out the sound of the rest of this wife's sentence as he discreetly points behind Eddie at another officer that is entering the breakroom.
Turning sightly, Eddie sees the officer and sighs "That appointment can't come soon enough." She mumbles before simply walking away.
Jamie and Danny watch her leave and when Jamie turns to look at his brother he sees an amused smirk on his face.
"What?" Jamie questions.
Danny looks at his brother and smiles "Nothing." he deflects before turning to the coffee machine. His brother had NO idea what he was in for…but he did – he had after all been through it twice with Linda...
