Night had fallen, and where once there was a bustling metropolis full of lights illuminating the sky, there were now only the flames of burning wreckage below to prove that life had even been there.
The four of them stood on the edge of a cliff, basking in the lights they looked down, Vegeta, Nappa, Raditz, and Kakarot. The Prince, the Bodyguard, the Coward, and the Clown.
Off by his lonesome pondering on a rock was the expressive member of their squadron, Broly, the Mute. He only used the light to see what he was working on.
"You didn't have to do that, Vegeta." Kakarot said.
"Oh?" Vegeta said, the sarcasm already dripping off of him from only one word. "I'm actually quite certain I did, in fact. I think that was actually the entire job. It's literally the only job we've ever had."
"But it didn't even bring any strong guys out! I don't think there are even any strong guys here at all!"
"Brother," Raditz said from behind him, "look at your scouter, it will show you if there's anyone strong around."
"Well yeah, but I mean like. Me and Vegeta strong, not you strong," Kakarot said in a chipper tone, much to the annoyance of his comrades.
His brother knew better than to take the bait though, he just rolled his eyes at the dumb bastard.
"You and Vegeta?!" Nappa shouted. "What in the hell would a low-class saiyan like yourself even know about power levels?! My power level is the second highest in this entire crew! If it wasn't for me and Vegeta, you three bozos would've been turned into dust in the wind years ago!"
"You forgot the part where the saibamen were changing my diapers," Kakarot said.
"That's right! My saibamen were changing your diapers while me and Vegeta were blowing up entire cities! He was five years old! Could barely even come up to my knees!" He paused as he looked back over to Vegeta. The Prince wasn't even that much taller than his knees now, he needed to correct himself! "He was shorter than my knees then!"
"Nappa," Vegeta said, "Would you please shut the hell up."
"But he started it!" Nappa said.
Vegeta gave the bald headed giant an icy glare that he knew would put him in his place. He'd lived almost his entire life with Nappa, which made it all the easier to know how to make him keel. "I said. Shut. Up."
Nappa nodded his head and turned his attention back to the flames below, trying and failing to count how many he was responsible for causing.
Vegeta's attention turned to Kakarot."The three of us got perfect scores, Kakarot. Complete one hundreds to make up for you two slackers. If you don't pick up the pace then I'll see it to it that you are punished accordingly."
"Well good luck with that, Prince," Kakarot said with a smirk creeping to his face, "I took out all the strongest warriors they had. Why waste the time with the small fries?"
"You explain that to Frieza."
Kakarots smirk faded as quickly as it came. The younger saiyan couldn't think of a retort, and settled for a huff as he put his fists to his hips and stared out into the sky.
Raditz was the first to walk away from the flames, and walk back to Broly, who was laying in the grass behind them and staring up at the sky.
"You do understand we have a time limit on these things, correct?" Raditz said.
"Mhm," Broly grunted back.
"So could it kill you to be faster on these things?"
"Mmm mmm."
The long haired saiyan knew what that meant. It was always the 'mmm mmm"s that you had to watch out for, that's how you knew a thought was forming in the young man's head.
"You know, you and my brother are a lot alike, Broly."
The larger warrior tilted his head at the statement.
"You both have so much potential but sometimes you … well … you just need to get angry alright? Your sector was the last one to get destroyed today, and do you know why that is?" Raditz asked.
"Chiaroscuro," Broly said.
"Wh… who the hell is that?"
"What."
"So it's an object? Like some sort of robot?"
"It's an art technique, it's about using shading to-"
Raditz held his hands up for him to stop. "This is exactly what I'm talking about, me and Kakarot are merrily blowing up buildings, slaughtering the masses, and you're out here … you're out here…"
"They taught me chiaroscuro, and this thing called a pen-sil," Broly said as he pulled one out of his pocket, "If you get this thing called paper, apparently you can use the pencil on the paper, and you can do chiaroscuro, and doodles, and writing too!"
Raditz dragged his hand over his face, holding it on his chin in exasperation as he looked at the gentle giant. "Well you killed them right? You killed the people in your sector? We need the people in each sector down by at least 80 to 90% so that Frieza can easily set up the operations on this planet."
"...Yeah." Broly said.
"You killed them. 90% of the planet's population, minimum, is gone from each sector, correct?"
"90% is gone, yeah."
Raditz knew the conversation was as solved as it was going to be. If he kept pressing the point it would be as useful as interrogating a brick wall. His duties were to help his brother Kakarot with his sectors and to get a report from Broly. He'd done both. He was done for the night.
"Thank you, Broly."
As Raditz lifted off the air to fly back to his pod, he heard Broly quietly say, "Thank you, Raditz. For being friends with me."
In the quiet of a burning city in flames, it's shocking how easy it is to hear someone speaking barely louder than a whisper. All of the saiyans turned their attention to Broly. Broly simply rolled over and pretended to be asleep.
Nappa let out a hearty laugh and slapped Kakarot on his shoulder. "This guy said friend!" Nappa struggled to say between laughs.
"What a goof! We're obviously battle buddies!" Kakarot said as he joined in on the laughter with Nappa.
Nappa's laughter came to a halting stop, "No, not battle buddies, Saiyan Warriors!"
"You're both about to be Saiyan fertilizer if you don't shut the hell up," Vegeta said.
"Aw you wouldn't do that buddy, we're the last saiyans you got!" Kakarot said.
Vegeta stared into the sky and took a deep breath. They were indeed the last saiyans. He'd had to try his best to restrain himself from murdering them.
