The world everyone knew was gone. In its place was a bunch of New World Governments trying to make claims for themselves. Ever since the day the world changed they called many names; The Blackout, the Day of Ends. But whatever it's called, people say the same thing; planes fell from the sky, the stock market and governments collapsed.
All over the world people were struggling to survive. In Japan, several factions rose up and took control of different regions. Kyoto was no different, as the people there came together to form the Free Japanese Republic with their government in Nijō Castle, and began to expand its borders with volunteers and militias.
One such militia group was made up of students that graduated from Kunugigaoka Junior High School, the Kunugigaoka Acorn Militia. Their leader was Gakushu Asano, and he led the militia against raiders. In the Militia were Nagisa Shiota and Karma Akabane. Close friends, and enemies of Asano. Even after the world ended, Asano was a jerk to those under him. His results often came at the reckless cost of his own men.
Ten years after the Collapse, the FJR had taken Tokyo and the cities in between. Today Asano had the Kunugigaoka Acorn Militia break near a town and sent Nagisa and Karma to scout it out. While on the scouting mission, Nagisa couldn't help but to worry about his friends, Yuma Isogai, Meg Kataoka, Toka Yada, Masayoshi Kimura, and Kaede Kayano. They were all in the States when the Collapse happened.
"Hey Nagisa," said Karma, breaking Nagisa out of his thoughts. They got behind a ruined car and saw a group of Raiders terrorizing a local family. Nagisa readied his Howa Type 89 Assault Rifle while Karma got his suppressed M24 Sniper Rifle aimed at one guy, who was holding a M1 Garand. Nagisa looked them over before looking at Karma.
"These guys might be reservists." Karma nodded at the observation.
"Yeah, switch to Semi. Don't want any civilian casualties." Nagisa nodded his head and switched his Rifle to Semi-Automatic.
Their skills are well known in the Militia for being two of the Deadliest Marksman in the JFR. Their reason? Their Junior high final year was spent trying to kill their teacher, a creature that was called Korosensei. Though they both prefer Hand-to-hand Combat, they are skilled in firearms too. Karma saw that the man with the M1 Garand was about to kill the father and quickly took a shot at him. He struck him in his head as Nagisa opened fire as well, and together they took down the Raiders.
After taking out the raiders, Nagisa shot a flare up into the sky and it came to be Blue. Few minutes later, a SUV rolled up to them and FJR Soldiers got out. One of them being their friend, Yukiko Kanzaki. She walked over with a medical bag to check on the family. That was when Asano rode up on his horse.
"Nagisa, why are you not scouting the town?" he demanded. Nagisa wanted to shoot him off the horse, but pushed his anger down.
"We saw this family in danger and followed the FJR Protocol to assist civilians." Asano said nothing before turning away.
"Go back to scouting, that is an order."
Nagisa clenched his fist and said, "Yes, sir. Come on Karma."
Karma followed Nagisa off as the FJR soldiers all felt distaste for Asano. He never helped with anything and just bossed people around. But they couldn't do anything as his father, Gakuho Asano, was in the FJR Government as minister of Education. When night fell, Nagisa and Karma came back and reported that the nearby Town was occupied by Raiders armed with small arms, reserved arms, and even an Type 60 Armored Personnel Carrier to boot.
"Looks like they also set up booby traps along the main road," Nagisa reported. "We should probably take the back way."
"No, they will expect us to do that." Asano was quick to shut Nagisa down. "We'll take the main road."
"Asano, you'll lead the men to their deaths!" Tomohito Sugino, another member of the militia and friend of Nagisa and Karma, protested.
"Must I remind you who is in charge here Tomohito? I will lead our men as I see fit," Asano retorted before walking to his quarters. Nagisa growled before noticing that Karma and Tomohito exchanged a look. At midnight, Nagisa saw the two walk off from camp so he decided to follow them. Staying out of sight, Nagisa heard Karma ask Sugino if he had a certain item.
"Cost me a good amount of goods, but I got it." Sugino pulled out a M67 fragmentation grenade. Karma smiled.
"Good, soon Asano won't be around anymore."
"When are we going to drop it on him?" Tomohito asked him. Upon hearing this, Nagisa stepped out and made himself known.
"Are you guys planning to kill Asano?"
"Nagisa?! When did you-?" Karma began.
"Just answer my question." Nagisa shushed him. Sugino and Karma looked at each other before looking back at Nagisa and nodded their heads.
"Good, I want in." Nagisa said. Karma shook his head in response.
"No, we don't want you involved. With Asano gone it will be down to you to assume command. This can't involve you."
"You forgot about my Assassin skills." Nagisa pointed out. Karma told him that they didn't forget his skills.
"But if you get asked, which we know you will be, plausible deniability that you had nothing to do with it." Karma pointed out. Nagisa knew Karma had a point, so he sighed.
"Fine. But don't do it tonight. Wait a few days." Karma and Sugino nodded their heads and they went back to camp.
The next morning, Asano got back on his horse and immediately issued an order.
"Kunugigaoka Acorn Militia, we are moving to the town! MOVE OUT!" The Kunugigaoka Acorn Militia began marching to the town full of Raiders.
Meanwhile, in the United States, Yuma Isogai was walking back to his encampment when he got jumped by raiders, but due to his skills he earned in Class-E, he defeated them all easily. Returning to his encampment, Yuma was greeted by his ten year old daughter Hadet. He hugged her closely when his wife, Meg Kataoka, walked out. Meg and Yuma greeted each other with a kiss.
"Anything new, Yuma?" Meg asked. Yuma shook his head.
"Nah, the West Coast Republic did nothing when they heard the Northern Republic was conquered." Yuma picked up their daughter and asked Meg if she heard from the others, but saw her shake her head and say that nothing was heard.
"Daddy, story time!" Hadet said to her dad. She saw her dad smile and they all walked into the encampment's main tent.
"She's been waiting for you to come back since she found a new book for you to read." Meg said to Yuma as Hadet brought the book out of her bag and sat on her daddy's lap.
Back in Japan, the Kunugigaoka Acorn Militia came under fire by the Raiders and the APC they had. Asano kept back as he watched the battle happen from a distance. Nagisa, Karma, and Sugino were all in the thick of it, taking headshots to conserve ammo. Karma got jumped by a raider, but he quickly dealt with the Raider by slitting his throat.
"You okay Karma?" Nagisa asked with worry, but smiled when the redhead gave him a thumbs up before the APC began to fire at them. Nagisa then called for a rocket Launcher and was handed one of the Militia's Nissan110mm LAM Disposable anti-tank rocket launchers. Nagisa then got into one house and to a window facing the street the APC was on. Taking aim, he pulled the trigger and the APC erupted in a fiery explosion.
"Nice shot Nagi-!" Said Sugino before getting shot by a raider in his leg. He tumbled over with a flurry of curses.
"Shit that fucking hurt!" he groaned. Soon Yukiko came over and began to patch his leg up.
Karma pulled out his rifle and taking a breath, shot the Grenade a Raider was about to throw. Seeing the grenade blow up before the raider could throw it, he shouted, "PUSH UP! PUSH UP!" He and Nagisa led the push to take down the raiders left in the city. The Raiders couldn't fight back anymore and many surrendered.
Nagisa sighed and sat down as Sugino was helped by Yukiko to sit next to him and it started to rain. He handed Sugino a bottle of water from his bag as Asano rode in on his horse. Standing up, Nagisa told Asano their casualties were 29 dead and 15 injured.
"Good. Those are acceptable losses," Asano dismissed. Nagisa's anger flared at these words.
"ACCEPTABLE LOSSES?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! WE WOULD HAVE HAD MORE IF I DIDN'T TAKE OUT THAT APC!" he snarled. Asano's boot lashed out from on top of his horse and knocked Nagisa down. He jumped down and sneered at Nagisa as he was helped up by two other members.
"Remember your place," Asano said. He turned and got back onto his horse and looked down at the militia members.
"We'll be heading back to Kyoto. Pack up immediately."
"But Asano, the town needs protection. We should stay here until reinforcements to secure the town." Karma suggested.
"No, we will move out to the capital." Asano said before turning his horse to leave. But soon he was hit in the back of the head with some mud. Looking behind him, he saw Nagisa with mud on his hand.
"You never listen to anyone! Even when you do everything wrong! Why don't you get off your literal high horse and actually learn from your mistakes!" he yelled.
"You think you can do this better? Fine then. Prove it." Asano said as he came down.
"If you can defeat me in a fight, then fine. I'll listen to you. But when you lose, you will shut your mouth, and listen to your betters. Know your place." Asano said. Nagisa was quiet. He didn't really feel like fighting just to prove a point, but he didn't have any patience left.
"Fine," he said. Karma and Sugino exchanged a look before stepping back. Other members of the militia backed up as the two approached each other.
"Let's begin." Was the only warning that Nagisa had before Asano lashed out with a kick, one that Nagisa blocked as it nearly struck him on the side of his head. Asano didn't know how to lead in a military group, but he did know how to fight.
"Come on!" Asano challenged as he fell into his stance with a hand gesturing in the 'come on' motion. Nagisa shook his hand before falling into his own stance. The two began trading blows as they blocked the others'. Nagisa grunted as a fist slammed into his forearm, causing him to stumble backwards.
"You're weaker than me. I think that's fairly-" Nagisa's fist jabbed Asano's face, causing his head to snap back and stumble back himself.
"Please, just shut up." Nagisa said before jumping and kicking Asano in the chest, sending him sprawling on the ground. Asano growled before swinging his legs around to spin to his feet. Nagisa crept forwards and lashed out with a side-kick, only for Asano to slap it down and counter with a punch to his cheek. Asano swung again, but Nagisa ducked under and slammed his head into Asano's face. Asano grunted as he stumbled backwards before Nagisa grabbed him by the head and yanked him down into a knee, knocking him over to the ground again. Asano lashed out with his leg to catch Nagisa in the gut to knock him over to the ground. Nagisa tried to push himself up, only for Asano to slam him down with a foot to the chest.
"Do you yield?" Asano asked snidely.
"..." Nagisa suddenly grabbed his leg and yanked it to the side while twisting. The mud under him caused him to be able to slide on the ground more than usual, and caused Asano to fall down with another splash of mud. The two rolled around away from each other before Asano lunged and wrapped his arm around Nagisa's throat. The smaller man's muddy thumb jammed into his eye, causing Asano to let go with a grunt of pain. Nagisa rolled forwards before jumping up and kicking the lunging Asano in the face, sending him flying.
"Do you?!" Nagisa demanded as he jumped and spun in the air to bring his boot down on Asano, who blocked with his arm.
"Insect!" Asano growled as he yanked out a knife and slashed wildly at Nagisa, cutting him across the thigh. It was a shallow cut, but Nagisa was instantly more wary as he jumped back and fell into his stance once again.
"Hold on! That's not fair!" Sugino interjected angrily. However, neither heard him as Asano charged forwards. Nagisa knocked a stab to the side and countered with the palm thrust. Asano fell back but regained his balance as Nagisa pulled out his own knife. The two clashed again as they swung their knives, creating sparks as they did. Asano's eyes widened as he found himself beginning to be pushed back as Nagisa pressed his advantage. His knife swings were more precise and aimed at Asano's neck and wrists, forcing him to focus more on parrying.
Nagisa suddenly was right in front of the taller man. His fist punched Asano across the nose, causing his eyes to tear up in response and letting Nagisa kick his knife out of his hand. Nagisa spun his knife into a reverse grip and stabbed Asano in the shoulder. Asano let out a cry of pain before gritting his teeth and kicking Nagisa away. He pulled the knife out and tried to stab Nagisa with it, only for him to clap in his face. Asano suddenly found himself frozen and wide-open for Nagisa to slam a rising knee into his chin, knocking him backwards.
"Ugh!" Asano groaned as he tasted blood in his mouth. He bit his tongue from the kick. Nagisa's boot slammed into his stomach, causing him to bend over as the air escaped his lungs.
"You want to give up yet?" Nagisa asked. Standing tall even in the rain, he looked rather intimidating to Asano. Especially his eyes. They were staring daggers into Asano's eyes, and despite the cloudy sky, they seemed as though they were glowing.
'It's as though I'm staring down a serpent.' Asano thought before gritting his bloody teeth.
"I will not!" he said as he reached down to his waist. Nagisa's eyes narrowed before rushing forwards. Asano yanked out his pistol and fired it, but Nagisa spun under the rocketing bullet on one leg before using the spin to kick Asano's gun out of his hand, sending it flying upwards. Nagisa reached up, caught the pistol, and aimed it at Asano.
"Give. Up."
"... You'll have to kill me for that!" Asano said as he lunged. Nagisa caught the lunge and pushed Asano over him with his legs. The leader landed in the mud before getting up and turning to fight more, right before a shot rang out. Nagisa blinked as he stared at Asano. The former leader stared back before looking down where a red spot was spreading on his shirt.
"... Damn… it…" he groaned before falling down on his side. Nagisa let his hand fall down, pointing the gun at the ground before standing up.
"..." He dropped the gun on the ground before turning to the rest of the militia, who stared at him in shock. Karma and Sugino exchanged looks before turning back to Nagisa.
"... I'll admit. I had thoughts on killing Asano before. I didn't want it to be like this though. At the very least, it wouldn't be at the end of a childish brawl like this. But… What's done is done." Nagisa said.
"... Look. Look around us." Karma said as he stepped forwards. "Count us. When we started out, we had a few hundred guys! Asano let most of them die. Now, there's only, what? Two? Three dozen of us? Maybe Asano didn't need to die, but this will be better in the long run. Wouldn't it?"
The people there nodded their heads as they all had some hatred against Asano.
"Besides, Nagisa shot him in self defense." Yukiko pointed out. The Members also agreed to that as well.
"Well, since I was the second in command, even though he never listened to me, I'm now in charge. I need a line to the capital requesting reinforcements and to let Mr. Asano about his son." Nagisa said as the rain began to let up.
