Five years passed, and things weren't easy. Runa had to balance her work as a seamstress and raising Shin. It would've been easier if Baylan were there, but Runa knew it was safer this way. The Empire was slowly establishing its presence on Viek, and having a Jedi hiding out there would've been dangerous. One day, while Runa was working, a tremor shook the house. Five year old Shin had been sitting at the table, her cup of water dangerously close to the edge. It fell, and when Shin reached out to try to catch it...it stopped. Runa stared at the cup as it floated, her eyes wide with shock and terror. She and Baylan had discussed the possibility of Shin being Force sensitive, but she had just been a baby, it seemed so unlikely at the time. She grabbed the cup out of mid-air and then looked at Shin. The five year old looked both confused and amazed. Runa grabbed her shoulders, "Don't ever do that again," she said, "Do you understand? Never again." Shin had never seen her mother look so serious, or so afraid, so she just nodded. Later that night, as Runa sat alone by the fire, she remembered a conversation she and Baylan had just before he left.

Flashback

"Baylan," Runa said, "What if she does end up...like you? What do I do then?"

"Don't let her use her powers," he replied, "They will fade with time."

End Flashback

"Please," Runa whispered, "Please let them fade."

Eight year old Shin trudged home from school. Her light blonde hair, which had been tied back in a neat braid that morning was now rather messy, her dark blue dress with the white and green embroidery was stained and dirty, her shoes were scuffed, and the bitter cold air stung the scrape on her cheek. She stopped in front of the door to the house, dreading the conversation she was about to have with her mother. Unfortunately, it was unavoidable. Her mother looked up when she entered, and instantly scooped her up and set her on a stool near the fire, "What happened to you?" she asked as she fetched the medical kit.

"I...got into a fight," Shin admitted.

"With who?!" her mother demanded as she cleaned the scrape.

"Erik and Ivar."

"Why?"

"Because they were saying mean things about you...and about father," Shin said, "I couldn't just stand there and let them."

Runa sighed, Erik and Ivar were brothers, and were most likely only repeating things they'd heard their father say. "You are so much like you're father," Runa murmured quietly, though Shin still heard her, then she said, "Promise me you won't get into any more fights?"

Shin nodded, "I promise," she said. Unfortunately she wasn't off the hook. Her punishment for getting into a fight was having to go up to bed early. Shin pretended to sleep when her mother came to check on her, but sat up again as soon as she was gone. She couldn't quite explain, but there was this strange, constant feeling within her. When she focused on it, it got stronger. She remembered the time she had levitated the cup, and wondered if that strange feeling had anything to do with it. She also wondered if it had anything to do with how she could sometimes almost tell when something was going to happen before it did. Like earlier, when she had felt something urging her to move before Erik could hit her. The feeling had caught her by surprise though, and he had managed to land a solid punch on her arm. Shin sighed quietly, then decided to experiment. Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath, and focused on the feeling. As she focused intently, the feeling grew stronger. It was like trying to catch a flickering little light. It would glow bright, then it would dim, and the chase always left Shin feeling tired and frustrated. Finally, she gave up. Curling up beneath her blankets, she couldn't help but wonder if her father would know what this power was. It wasn't the first time she wondered, and it probably wouldn't be the last. Sleep claimed her quickly, and as she slept, she dreamt that she was surrounded by stars.
