Something sweet

Prologue

Samuel Dwight Evans was a junior at William McKinley High School. He was tall with sandy brown hair, green eyes, and an infectious grin. He had the ability to make everyone feel comfortable around him with his goofy impressions and easygoing attitude. Easily one of the most popular guys at his school, he had somehow stumbled into a very odd friendship with Mercedes Jones.

She literally fell into his lap one day in the cafeteria and was so embarrassed that she left and forgot her notebook. This wasn't some weird She's All That moment, he could tell she was pretty from the brief encounter but her brown eyes are what took the cake. That being said it took him a straight month to find her, which is saying a lot because he literally asked everyone he knew if they'd even heard of her and they all said no.

He finally looked through her notebook some more and found out she was a Sophomore. He figured she was in the same grade as him but he realized he'd never seen her in any of his classes so he had to venture to the underclass wing of their school.

"Hey dude, do you know a girl named Mercedes Jones?" Sam asked a random kid who looked shocked that he was even talking to him.

"Ah.. she's in my chemistry class." He answered.

"Cool, when is your class?"

The kid looked at him for a second more. "It's my next class, Mr. Williamson room 142."

"Thanks, dude." Sam said, holding his fist out and the kid slowly fist-pumped him. "See you around."

Sam headed to Mr. Williamson's class, having to hurry because his own class started in ten minutes across campus. He walked into the classroom and scanned it before seeing her sitting at a table talking to a pretty blonde girl.

"Mr. Evans, what do I owe this pleasure?" Mr. Williamson asked and Sam smiled at the older man.

had been his chemistry teacher and was pretty laid back if you didn't blow shit up. He was a burly man with an intimidating presence but was more like a giant teddy bear. Sam found that out when he came into class one day crying because his cat ran away.

"I need to return this to one of your students, it'll be brief." He answered.

"Make it quick." Mr. Williamson said and Sam nodded before heading straight to Mercedes.

Mercedes and her friend were talking about their Friday plans when she looked up and saw the guy she fell on walking towards their table and felt herself getting nervous.

"Oh my God, why the heck is Sam Evans here and coming towards us?" Her friend, Quinn asked.

Mercedes' nervously nibbled on her bottom lip." Remember that guy I told you I fell on?" She asked softly and Quinn just nodded. "It was him… he's probably coming to tell me off."

"That was a month ago, no way he remembers you.."

"Hey Mercedes." Sam said smiling. Mercedes' eyes grew wide because she wasn't sure how he knew her name or how he knew where she'd be right now.

Quinn nudged her arm before looking at Sam with a flirty smile. "You'll have to forgive her, she's shy."

Sam smirked, only taking his eyes off of her for a brief second to acknowledge Quinn before looking back at Mercedes.

"You dropped this." Sam said, placing her notebook in front of her.

"Oh… thank you." Mercedes said so softly that he had to lean down to hear.

"What was that?" He asked.

Mercedes cleared her throat. "Thank you." She repeated with a soft smile.

"No worries, don't be a stranger." He said winking at her before walking towards the door. "I left you something in there." He added before leaving.

Everyone looked at her which made her extremely uncomfortable so she quickly tucked the notebook into her desk and kept her face forward even though she felt Quinn's eyes boring into her.

"Don't you want to know what he left?" She asked, wiggling her eyebrows at her. "I heard he does things like this for girls he wants to sleep with."

Mercedes felt her face heat up and shook her head. "I doubt that and he has no reason to want that from me… I don't even know him."

"So, why else would he say that?" Quinn asked.

"I'm not sure, maybe it's just a joke."

Quinn looked at her suspiciously. "You don't like him, do you?"

Mercedes sighed. "Quinn I don't even know him and I really don't know why you're pressing this so hard."

Quinn shrugged. "You're right, it probably was just a joke but at least you got your notebook back."

Mercedes only nodded before Mr. Williamson began his lesson. Mercedes was a diligent student who prided herself on her ability to camouflage. She hated attention, she hated having to do any forms of public speaking and she absolutely hated feeling embarrassed.

She'd been in a rush that day she tripped and fell on the upperclassman. She wasn't paying attention and bumped into some before tripping over her own feet. She could still remember the extreme urge to cry but she managed to hold it together long enough to run out of the cafeteria and into the library.

Her mother always told her she never knew where her shyness came from because neither of her parents were that way. In fact her older brothers and sister were so outgoing that when she started her freshman year, all the teachers assumed she was the same.

They were wrong, very wrong. She only spoke when called on and even though that was a task, she had to do an oral presentation for her literature class and almost fainted. Her sister, Maia would always tell her that one day something was going to break her shyness and she's been waiting for that moment since she was six.

"Ms. Jones, could you go to the supply closet and get the things off this list for me?" Mr. Williamson asked and she nodded before taking the key and heading to the closet.

Quinn waited until Mercedes was fully out of the classroom before digging into her desk and pulling out her notebook. She sifted through the pages hoping to see whatever he left but didn't see anything. She quickly closed it and put it back as Mercedes came back, she wasn't sure why Sam would even come all this way to give back a stupid notebook but she would use this as her in with the older boy… somehow.

Mercedes sat back down and Quinn shot her a sweet smile."So I think we should hang out tonight!"

"Can't remember it's Friday, it's family night. You're coming over tomorrow right?"

"Oh right tomorrow! Yes, we should have a pamper day!"

Mercedes smiled. "Okay."
