A/N: Here is a ROMY story where Mister Sinister was in X-men Evolution. I feel like if they did ever put him in the show like they did with the original X-men animated cartoon, evolution would be a little dark kinda like Teen Titans but maybe that's just me.
I'm a sucker for ROMY pairing, yet I do not own X-men Evolution. Anyway! Enjoy! Let me know what you guys think! I appreciated the reviews on my last stories!
Chapter 1: Guilt
Rogue grumbles as she walks out of the danger room, pissed off that Scott woke them up at 5 am for a danger room session. She was still mentally healing from waking up Apocalypse four days prior, her strength not what it used to be as she was drained. It had taken a hard toll on her, especially mentally as she blamed herself, but everyone told her she was controlled by Mesmero.
Logan had carried her unconscious form out of the tomb to the others, a bit panicked as she didn't wake up right away. Everyone was assessing injuries from Apocalypse's clap that blew them all back, but once they recovered and shakily got up, everyone's eyes were on the Wolverine and the unconscious Rogue's body. Logan had asked Xavier to look into her mind, trying to find her consciousness. Xavier tried, looking up with a frown, everyone watching with baited breath. He says her mind was left broken from taking all the powers and being drained by Apocalypse, but she was still alive. It was a hard flight back home, both Acolytes and X-men silent and shaken up as the most powerful mutant has risen. Rogue's unconscious form was laying down, her friends casting worried glances to her, even the younger Acolytes feeling sympathy, especially a certain red on black eyed Acolyte.
Her recovery wasn't as quick as she hoped it would be, but she was told to take it easy. Unfortunately, Scott tried to continue things like normal, to which Rogue yelled at him after she got her ass knock over by a sweeping, metal arm in their danger room session. Scott tried to counter but his girlfriend, Jean, stepped in and said Rogue still needs rest.
Rogue slams her room door shut, kicking off her boots and flopping onto her bed. She lets out a frustrated growl as she looked up at the ceiling. "Stupid Summers." She grumbles. "He knows ah'm still recoverin'."
Rogue takes off her uniform, climbing under the sheets in a tank top and shorts and goes back to sleep. She wasn't going to school that day as the Professor was letting her take a couple days off to recoup. Logan, Hank and Storm would check up on her every now and then, Rogue not saying a word. She wanted to be left alone. The guilt had already started to eat at her ever since she woke up and was told what had happened.
Feeling the need to escape the mansion after Hank had checked up on her again, she gets dressed and sneaks out, wearing ripped jeans and a purple off the shoulder top with her converse. Everyone else was at school- Jean and Scott out on a date as they had graduated, so it was just her and the teachers in the mansion, until she decided to get away.
Rogue walks down the streets, wallowing in self pity with a bitter look on her face. Her hands hugged her arms as she walked, lost in her thoughts. With no psyches in her head, it was just her own thoughts and her thoughts alone. She kept telling herself it was all her fault, stealing all the powers but no recollection of it happening. Even playing into Mystique's own twisted plan.
Rogue sits down on a park bench, liking the secluded area. She lets out a sigh, her head in her hands. A shiver ran up her spine as she felt like she was being watched, snapping her head up and to look around at her surroundings. Finding herself alone still, Rogue gets up and starts to walk back to the mansion.
Rogue looks over her shoulder as she exits the park, but found no one following her. Her brows furrow, but she continues. Her gut told her to turn a corner, so she listened, then stopped and waited. After waiting for five minutes, Rogue decides to walk around the corner, only to bump into a hard chest. She steadies herself and mumbles a sorry, looking up to see who she bumped into. Her face hardened when she noticed a familiar pair of red on black eyes and noticeable and unforgettable smirk. "Bonjour, chère." Gambit greets her. "Didn' expect t' run int' y' t'day."
"Outta mah way, swamp rat. Ah'm tryin' ta go home." Rogue tries to walk around him but he met her every move.
Gambit tilts his head as he noticed how she looked, but also picked up how she felt. "Aren't y' supposed t' be in school?" He asks.
Rogue crosses her arms, shaking her head. "Ah'm…takin' a break…"
Gambit understood why she was. After all, he was sent with Sabertooth and Wolverine to bring her back home. He can feel the guilt eating her up, seeing it flash in her emerald green eyes that used to be brighter, but were now a bit dull. "Wasn' y' fault." He blurts out.
Rogue snaps her head up. "Excuse meh?"
Gambit stood up straighter, a stern look on his face. "Y' wakin' up Apocalypse, wasn't y' fault, Rogue. Mesmero and Mystique used y'. Y' shouldn' be blamin' y'self when it was all on dem."
"Why would ya care? Ya no better than doin' Magneto's biddin's." Rogue snaps back, but noticed the look in his eyes change.
"If I remember correctly, Magneto and y' Professor teamed up an' had moi, Sabertooth and de Wolverine go after y'." Gambit counters, getting in Rogue's personal space which causes her to back up.
"Wait… what?" Rogue looks up surprised.
Seeing the look on her face, his features soften lightly. "Y' didn' know?" When Rogue didn't answer he lets out a sigh. "Course y' didn', how could y' when y' were nearly half dead after Apocalypse drained y'."
Rogue just stares at the ground, her mind processing the information. Her brows furrow, but she could not remember a thing. Remy watched her facial expressions, feeling what she felt as she processed the information. Shaking her head, Rogue pushes past him without a word, but gasps when she felt a hand grab hers. Her eyes look at his in surprise but also anger, his calmly staring back at her which always sent a shiver running up her spine when his red on black eyes gazed into her emerald orbs. "Let go of meh!" Her voice wavers slightly, eyes still locked onto his.
Without saying the words that were on his tongue, Gambit let's go of her hand, Rogue turning and hurriedly taking off back towards the mansion. He watches her leave, then turns to leave himself, feeling a bit conflicted, but knowing he couldn't show up to the mansion, especially with a Wolverine lurking around the grounds and a heavy defense system.
Rogue wraps her arms around herself, her brain wrapping around Gambit's words. She sneaks back into the mansion grounds, heading back into her room and closes her door right as the others got back. She lets out a sigh, sliding down her door with her head leaning back against it. Her body shook as she stifles some sobs back, her hand covering her mouth.
That night was hard as her dreams were wracked with night terrors that plagued her mind. She sprung up screaming, her breathing fast as her heart pounded in her chest. Each night felt harder and harder to fall asleep, but the more she tried to stay awake the worse it got. The hand of Apocalypse would always reach out for her, beckoning for her to bring him more and more mutant powers for him to absorb so he may become stronger. To Rogue, it felt like Apocalypse was getting closer to her every time she dreamt, trying to take her. Trying to use her like everyone else.
Rogue would wake up several times in the night, going to school exhausted and drained. She got detention numerous times for falling asleep in class. Her tired eyes told her friends she wasn't doing well, each one asking if she was okay, but she would barely utter a word to them.
Rogue came home from detention one night, Logan meeting her at the door with his arms folded, but not in his usual gruff way. "You look exhausted, stripes. Not sleeping well?" He asks.
Rogue just shakes her head, her gaze down at her shoes. She didn't want to make eye contact. She wouldn't dare let anyone see how she looked at the moment. "Well, we're here to help if you need it." Logan speaks again, but she just nods and rushes inside.
Logan sighs, watching her walk up the stairs towards the bedrooms. Rogue shuts her door, tossing her backpack onto the bed as she shuffles inside. She does her homework, even reads her books for a while, anything to fight off sleep. Realizing they won't work for long, she gets up and throws on a hoodie, sneaking out of her room through her balcony and an adjacent tree. Once she over the fence, she starts walking, thinking of anything to keep her up and awake even though sleep was fighting her every step.
Rogue ended up at the park again, the few street lamps lighting it up eerily. She trudges along the path, hands in her hoodie pocket, hood up, not knowing where she was actually going or what she doing. A yawn escapes her, her gloved hand rubbing her eyes as she shuffles along. Rogue looks up, tiredly blinking as a figure was walking ahead. Not wanting to interact with anyone, especially this late at night, she starts to head off into a different direction, her eyes noticing the large figure switching directions with her. Panic starts to settle in and she quickens her pace, wanting to get back to the mansion as soon as possible.
Turning her head to try and see who was following her, but could only see a black, large figure. Rogue curses under her breath, trying to use what little energy she had to get into a sprint, but instead her legs trip over each other and the last thing she remembers is smacking her head and passing out.
Rogue gasps awake, sitting up in what she found was her bed. Confused, she looked around, noticing her hoodie was still on, but her shoes were next to her bed. Her hand goes to her head, grimacing when she felt a throbbing. Rogue swings her legs over her bed, going into her on-suite bathroom and flipping on the light. Her eyes squint at the bright lights, circles under her eyes as she gazes at her reflection. She moves her white tresses aside, noticing a small bandage on her forehead. "Huh…?"
Rogue blinks, rubbing her eyes as she could feel her body wanting to give out. Letting out a sigh, she heads back into her bed and finally lets sleep consume her.
Morning comes and she didn't set her alarm, nor did anyone try to wake her up. Rogue gasps awake, her eyes looking over to her clock. "Shit!" She curses as she jumps out of bed and changes out of yesterdays clothes.
She rushes out of her room, after brushing her hair and teeth, bumping into Logan. "Stripes?"
"A-ah'm late!" Rogue blurts out, trying to get past him.
Logan looks at her, noticing the lack of sleep she has been getting. "No, you're not," He shakes his head. "You should stay home today. You look so exhausted."
"No, ah can't stay home! Ah gotta go!" Rogue runs past Logan, not even bothering with breakfast.
Logan makes a face as she ran down the hall. Rogue runs to school, panting once she got there. She missed first period, but made it in time for second, Kitty noticing how she looked. "Oh my gosh, Rogue! You, like, okay?"
"Ah'm fahne…" Rogue pants. "Ah fo'got ta set mah alarm."
"You look tired. Maybe you should go back home." Kitty looks at her best friend, concern on her face.
"Ah said ah'm fahne!" Rogue growls, then takes out her book and starts to read while the final bell rings for class.
Kitty sinks into her seat a bit, frowning. Once second period was over, Rogue slumps against her locker, rubbing her eyes and groaning. Kitty and Kurt tried to approach her, expressing their concerns but she would shrug them off and head off to her next class. The day felt like it crawled on, Rogue staying after school for detention, again, which did not help her tiredness or her headache. She doesn't even remember getting into her bed after her walk, which bewildered her.
After her detention was done, Rogue exits the school, tired again, but she kept her legs going. She rounds a corner, bumping into a kid and his friend who were smoking behind the school, mumbling a sorry, but then felt her arm be grabbed. "Hey! Freak! You owe me a pack of cigarettes after you made me drop my box!" One guy yelled.
Rogue scrunches her nose. "Not mah fault ya got buttahfingahs."
"What did you say, mutie?" The other guy in a beanie growls.
"Ya heard meh! Now let go! Ah'm not in the mood taday, so leave meh alone!" Rogue growls back, trying to yank her arm.
"Like hell!" The guy holding her arm shoves her against the hard brick wall.
Rogue makes a face, glaring at the two. "Fahne. Ya asked fo' it!"
Rogue punches the tall, lanky guy that held her arm, then sent a kick to a larger boy that wore a beanie. She goes to throw another kick, but her tiredness made her off-balanced and she stumbled back, which gave them the opportunity to strike her down. Rogue covers her face and head, gritting her teeth as she felt them kick at her. Then they stopped.
"Didn' y' mom eve' teach y' not t' hit a girl?"
Rogue knew that voice, part of her grateful but the other part of her wishing he hadn't shown up. "Yeah, but she said I can hit all the muties I want!" The lanky boy says, ready to throw a punch, but Gambit punches him first, sending him down, then uses his bo-staff to take the other guy down.
The two run off, noticing the look in his red on black eyes, Rogue peeking up from the ground a bit, then she looks away and starts grabbing her things. "Y' okay, chère?" He asks, seeing her grab her stuff.
"Ya followin' meh or somethin'?" She asks back.
"Jus' lookin' out fo' y'." Gambit shrugs, then he noticed her appearance once she stood up. "Merde. Y' nose is bleedin' a bit."
Rogue touches her nose, a dribble of blood staining her gloved hand. She groans. "Just mah luck…"
"Y' sleep any bette' last night?" Gambit asks, cautiously though, but that only made her more suspicious of him. Noticing the look Gambit motions to the bags under eyes. "Y' got some bags."
"Ah guess. Ah missed mah alarm an' ah woke up in mah bed after passin' out on a walk." Rogue puts her bag over her shoulder, avoiding his gaze.
"Y' seem t' hit y' head pretty hard…" Gambit says softly, but shuts his mouth as soon as Rogue snapped her head up to look at him.
"What did ya say?! Were you stalkin' meh last naght?!" Rogue takes a step forward, jabbing him in the chest lightly.
Gambit held up his hands. "No, dere was someone else. I jus' so happen t' be in de area last night and came t' y' rescue, again."
"Ah don't NEED savin'. Ah can save mah self!" Rogue growls.
"Sure y' can, chère". He smirks at her, which only made her more angry.
"Ah had those guys until you showed up!" Rogue folds her arms, huffing.
"So curlin' up on de ground was part o' de plan?" He tilts his head at her.
Rogue just glared, clenching her jaw. She turns and starts to walk away, wanting to get home, but Gambit was quick and moved in front of her. "What were y' doin' out late last night anyway? Y' seem pretty tired."
Rogue makes a face, wishing he would leave her alone. "Ah am tired." She admits softly, lowering her defenses just a enough.
Gambit tilts his head a bit, looking at her curiously. "'S it Apocalypse?"
Rogue turns her gaze down, not wanting to look into his red on black eyes, while biting her lip very slightly. It clicked to Gambit though and he wondered how much sleep she has lost since that day. It's been over a month and she knew she wasn't getting better, especially after she shut everyone out more. His hand moves to touch her, but it falls back to his side, feeling her emotions deep down that she was trying desperately to hide. "Ah…." Rogue starts, gazing up at him, her gaze soft, Gambit catching a glimpse of some emotion, but it was gone as she hardens. "Ah hafta go."
Rogue abruptly leaves, clutching her bag closer to her as she pushed her legs to walk as fast she can. Gambit just watched, his hand clenching into a loose fist at his side. He knows how she was feeling, but why was he caring about his enemy so much? He's always been enamored with her since they ran into each other, so naturally he's been curious about her and followed her to a few places, some unintentional and some intentional just so he could see her. But he can't easily be with her. Magneto has dirt on him and the master of magnetism hasn't been to kind since Apocalypse's rising, working them all like dogs to learn more about the ancient mutant.
Shaking his head out of his tranced state, he starts to walk back to where he parked his motorcycle, getting on and driving off back towards the Acolytes current base.
Rogue gets home, everyone coming down for dinner. She just grabs something quick, avoiding anyone and quickly taking her things upstairs to her room. She slams her door shut, getting her homework out after placing her food on her desk. Rogue nibbles on her food as she worked on her French homework, then once that was done she worked on her math homework. Once all her homework was done with, she leaves her empty plate on her desk as she sits on her bed, eyes looking down at the floor. She puts her face in her hands, sighing deeply as she tries not to let her mind fight against her. Tonight will be hard to sleep, knowing the nightmares that's been plaguing her will come again and torture her which will add to her exhausted look. Rogue just wishes it could all go away.
A/ N: Someone just come and make Rogue's life easier for her. This gal needs a break! Till next time!
