Hi! I'm Cian-Nueral. I write a satirical comedy and drama stories inspired by real-life. Now, this isn't related to that. I'm putting that on as a warning that it will take some elements from my satire series. Honestly, this is the first time I'm writing something inspired by post-apocalyptic fiction and time travel.
I don't own Adventure Time. Read, Review, and Enjoy.
Location: [REDACTED] (January 20, 2042)
A young soldier looked at the battlefield below, a submachine gun at the ready. This wasn't what he expected when he enlisted into the military. Ashen dirt, sand, and dust rose from the abrupt explosions. Casualties racked up on all sides.
"Mertens! Fall back!" the soldier's earth caked ears perked at the individual who called his name. Captain Perucci, the current officer in charge of their squad, barked orders to the surviving soldiers to get in. They fired their weapons blindly to try and slow down the invaders.
A mortar hit the soldiers as they took refuge in the facility. Perucci's back was pelted by shrapnel and got in last after helping another unfortunate soldier get in after getting her legs blown off. They were defending a fortified weapons bunker and silo. It held nuclear warheads and untested gadgets of all shapes and sizes. A cornucopia of weapons, if you may.
What started this war? Extremist factions constantly forming. Some wanted equality whose blinded valor has inadvertently sown inequality in the hearts of many, some wanted to overthrow their governments because of their adamant beliefs swayed by crooked individuals, and there were those forced into the crossfire. It was an international free-for-all. The United Nations failed its purpose because of the constant bickering and unnecessary enforcement of ideals.
Mertens was forced into this conflict. His entire squad as well. Now, most of them are dead, ammo scarcely available, and losing their hold. He opened a pouch and checked the contents. He has small pocket versions of books his mother gave him, a white bear cap that might make him teased, and his pencil and journal.
Perucci leaned against the wall and motioned Mertens to get over to where he is.
"Need something Adrian?"
"Yeah... I need you to hide and blow this joint."
Mertens' eyes widened when Perrucci handed him a bag of C4s. "I- I can't do it!"
Perucci coughed out some blood after hearing that. "C'mon, man... My back is shredded. Someone has to! Owens and Dumay are guarding the door, and Astranovich lost her legs."
"We can't hold this position for too long! We gotta stop them from taking over!" Owens called out before taking cover from a whizzing .50 cal bullet. He fired his own in retaliation. Another .50 cal came, this time penetrating the wall and going through his head. He died where he was taking cover.
Looking at Perucci, Mertens closed his eyes and ran off to do as he was told with the bag of explosives.
Dumay didn't say anything as she hurled the last of her grenades outside. She picked up Astranovich's grenades and repeated to do what she did before...
With Mertens...
The soldier sprinted across the halls and unlocked the gates to the nuclear weapons storage. He was setting up the explosives when he heard gunfire near the entrance. He continued at a quick pace, making sure everything was in place.
Picking up the leftover C4s, he ran into another room and rigged it. He looked around and hid inside a bulky pod. He saw a few shadows and took a few deep breaths. Feeling a keyboard, he flipped a switch that allowed the lights to be turned on and unknowingly locked himself inside the pod by jamming a button.
Mertens looked around, trying to understand what he just put himself into. When he heard more gunshots, he began sweating as he didn't know what to do.
'What can I do?!' he mentally shouted. If he finds a way to get out, surely he would be shot or taken prisoner. If he doesn't, then the intruders would take everything from the bunker and use it for their own purposes. He set aside his SMG and pulled out the remote detonator from his ammo pouch, staring at it. If he does this, then there is no coming back.
He slowed down his breath and closed his eyes. "*click!* Mom, sorry that I couldn't finish my tour. Dad, sorry for not visiting at all. Guys, I'm sorry that it has to end this way. I really am... *click!*
His vision went white as radiation engulfed the entire bunker. A sign that said 'Time Machine' slowly disintegrated and the pod disappeared without a trace. No dust, no dirt, no powder, nothing was there as the land surrounding the bunker erupted in nuclear fire, killing off every form of life in almost half of the North-American continent from Washington to Baja California. It also created a massive chasm in the middle of the mid-western US states.
The soldier's name was Finn Mertens- and he was ripped out of his timeline at the age of 18...
