Chapter 8: Night Terrors
Rogue was used to resting in the medical wing of the X-mansion, but Remy was not. He kept trying to get up and move around, but to his bodies dismay, he begrudgingly laid back down and noticed his girlfriend was content and absorbed in her reading, which baffled him a bit. "What's the matter, shugah? Not used ta restin' aftah almost dyin'?" Rogue raises a brow.
Remy gives a half laugh, half wheeze. "Never been dis close t' dyin'. Usually wit' wounds severe dey get patched up and den I keep on trainin'." Remy winces as he finally sits down, figuring he could play with his cards to keep him distracted.
His eyes glance to Rogue, still content laying all snug in bed with her book. How did she do it? Seems to him it wasn't her first time in the medical bed. "Y' seem offaly comfortable layin' in dat bed, chère."
"Not mah first tahme heah, shugah." Rogue glances to him, a small smile in her lips.
"How many times y' down heah?" Remy raises his brow as he takes a sip from a glass of water Hank has brought down.
Rogue sinks down into her bed a bit, covering her face with her book. "Uh…. A lot.."
Remy spits out the water, choking. "Quoi?! What do y' mean a lot?" He hacks out.
Rogue gives a sheepish smile. "Well… ah had a lot of accidents with mah powahs… ah had all the psyches in mah head try an' take over and almost die… Apocalypse drainin' meh knocked meh out fer two days and then there was the sleep deprivation…"
Remy blinks. "Y' mean t' tell me dat dis ain' y' first time dyin' either…" Rogue just gives him a shrug, figuring he was trying to process all of her accidents she has had ever since coming to the institute. "Merde."
"Ah'm fahne though! So don't worry." Rogue tries to reassure him, but he just looks at her.
"Sounds like y' need a bubble o' somet'in'. Bon dieu (good god)." Remy runs a hand through his hair.
He even chased her when she was sleep deprived and the girl could still kinda fight well, minus the lack of balance. Rogue was a tough girl, but with her powers come complications which she has to deal with. She's the mansions most likely to end up in the medical wing awardee as she's been in there more than the others. Remy wasn't sure if he was impressed or concerned.
Their evening continues on as they play a game of cards, though because Remy had the upper hand, Rogue would end up losing. She figured she would never try to go up against him in real poker if there were real money at hand.
They were starting to feel better, though the poison from Rogue's system only 84% expelled from her body, she still had a while to go. She enjoyed spending her time with Remy, both getting close to one another.
Once night came, they curled up in their beds, Rogue fall fast asleep while Remy slowly dozes off. He had a lot on his mind, but eventually his body went to sleep. He dreamt of Rogue, going out with her and walking around the city. She had a smile on her face which he doesn't always get to see but it's still beautiful. Then, it turns dark and she gets shot by Scalphunter, Mister Sinister appearing with a grin. "I can still operate on a dead mutant. Come here boy." Mister Sinister says as he reaches forward, making Remy gasp and sitting up while his breathing was rapid.
"C'est quoi ce bordel…(What the fuck)" He curses under his breath as he pants, his hand going through his disheveled hair.
His red on black eyes pan over to Rogue's sleeping form. She was okay. She was alive. She was safe. He got an uneasy feeling in his gut, but figured it was just from the nightmare. Settling back against his pillow, he still stares at Rogue's sleeping form, telling himself Sinister was far away and that he was most likely dead. Sighing a bit, he closes his eyes to go back to sleep.
Rogue dreamt of being at the institute, smiling in content as she sat outside on a beautiful day. She closes her eyes as she felt the light breeze but opens them when it became a rush of wind with cloudy skies. Rogue looks around with wide eyes, just noticing all her friends on the ground in severe pain. A figure on her right approaches her from the crowd of bodies, while a figure on the left approaches from the gate. "We're not done with you." Sinister grabs her, Rogue screaming and kicking to get out of his grip.
Her wide eyes move to see Apocalypse walking towards them, panic rising in her. Rogue wakes up screaming, sitting up and panting fast as she looked around. This startled Remy as he was just about to go back to sleep. "Leave meh alone!" Rogue shouts, not noticing she was fully awake.
Remy winces as he swiftly gets up from the bed, rushing over to Rogue. "Chère? Rogue, 's okay, we're safe."
Rogue gasps as she flinches, her eyes were wide with panic and fear. Remy frowns in concern as he sits with her in bed, wincing a bit as he adjusts himself. "What happened?" He asks, his arms gently wrapping her.
"T-they were heah…" Rogue chokes out softly, feeing tears pour out and run down her cheeks. "They came fer meh… a-ah couldn't help anyone nor could anyone help meh."
"Who?" Remy looks at her, brows furrowed.
"A-Apocalypse and M-Mister Sinister." Rogue covers her face with her hands, shaking lightly as she tries to regain her composure.
Remy's eyes widen a bit. "Dey won' come fo' us, okay? Sinister's back on his island, most likely dead an' Apocalypse doesn' even know where y' at. I don' t'ink he'd be able t' find y'."
Rogue sniffs, turning her head away from Remy, hating how he has seen her cry so many times now. Remy uses his hand to turn her head to look at him. "We're safe. An' even if dey come aftah us, 'm not gon' let dem get y'." He says lowly.
Rogue's emerald eyes widened, looking into serious his gaze. He leans in and kisses her deeply, using his powers to make a charge so she took that energy and not knock him out. Rogue was in a surprised shock as he kissed her. She kisses him back, her shaking hands going on his shoulders. They pull back, gazing into each others eyes, breathing heavily. "H-how…?" She whispers.
"I got a lot o' tricks up m' sleeve." Remy winks. "Wasn' sure it would work but it was worth tryin'."
Rogue stares at him, her heart sped up. He could touch her to an extent. She was speechless and breathless, Remy could see the affect it had on her. Rogue grabs him and kisses him again, Remy's arms going around her tightly, as if she would be taken away from him any moment. She pulls back slowly, both their eyes lidded. "Am ah gonna wake up with ya gone in the morning?" She whispers softly.
"'M not goin' anywhere. Even if I did I won' get far." He smiles at her.
The two lay in each other's arms, slowly falling asleep. "Are ya stayin'?" Rogue whispers, sleepily.
"'M stayin'." Remy whispers back, his lips placing a kiss in her hair.
A small smile formed on her lips as she dozes off, Remy nuzzling her and falling asleep too. Morning arrives and the two were still wrapped up in each other's arms, Rogue yawning as she starts to wake up. She smiles as she sees Remy still asleep, feeling relief wash over her. She was still worried about being found but also felt better that she was safe with Remy.
Remy wakes up shortly after, his eyes fluttering open and noticing Rogue awake. "Hi shugah." She says softly.
"Hi." Remy smiles sleepily. "Y' droppin' y' swamp rat nickname fo' shugah? Been sayin' dat a lot, not dat 'm complain'."
"Ah'll still call ya swamp rat." Rogue grins.
Remy gives her a pout, to which she laughs lightly. Hank enters the medical room, seeing both awake. "Morning you two," Hank smiles. "How'd you sleep?"
"Not so great. We had nightmares but luckily jus' one." Remy answers, his arm around Rogue.
"Well, I'm sure it's not easy to recoup after going through all that." Hank nods sympathetically. "Hopefully we don't have to deal with any more trouble. I think we could all use a bit of a break."
"Ah agree." Rogue sighs, her head rest on Remy's shoulder.
Hank checks their vitals, both progressed in healing. A couple days pass, both southerners being let out of the medical lab, but on restrictions. Remy was officially introduced as a new X-man after a talk with Xavier in his office, Rogue smiling lightly. Some were still a little weary of him, but most have accepted him in as a new member of the team, Remy knowing he wasn't going to go back to Magneto.
He lays awake in bed, staring at the ceiling as it poured outside, his eyes slowly closing as sleep starts to overtake him. The night crawled on, Remy tossing and turning restlessly, opening his eyes in frustration after having enough. He huffs as he lays there, eventually getting up and seeing it was still raining. Turning to sneak out of his room, he felt the hair on his neck stand up, his head instinctively turning to see if anyone was there, but there was no one, just the rain lightly tapping on the window. Remy narrows his eyes, unable to shake the feeling he was getting. His gut told him to go check on Rogue, which he immediately walked out of his room quietly and snuck down the hall to where she slept.
Rogue wasn't sleeping well either. She, too, was tossing and turning in her bed, but mostly due to a nightmare that was plaguing her. Sweat dripped down her brow, her face contorted in fear as she whimpers. A hand reached out in her dream, the dark figure cloaked as it grabbed her, causing her to scream and bolt up. Rogue looks around her room, eyes wide as lightning lit up the room, her terrified eyes catching what appeared to be a large figure standing in her room. Petrified, Rogue sat upright in bed, her body unable to get out of bed, as she stared at the large figure in her room. It loomed closer to her bed, a hand reaching out to grab her, Rogue's breathing rapid as her anxiety rose.
She felt her words caught in her throat, her mouth trying to utter words, but they weren't coming out. The large figure steps closer to her bed, Rogue's eyes still wide and her breathing rapid as she tries to force the words out of her throat. She hears the knob on her door start to turn, her head snapping over as it opens and she sees familiar red on black eyes. Bolting out of her bed, Rogue throws herself onto Remy as she clings to him. Remy looks at her worriedly, noticing the panic attack that was happening. "Chère? Y' okay?" Remy whispers.
"Someone's in heah!" Rogue forces out, whispering as well.
Remy looks up into her room, flipping on her light. Rogue knits her brows together in confusion, stepping away as she looks around. "What? There was someone in heah…."
"Y' soah?" Remy looks at her concerned.
"Yes, ah'm positive! There was someone in heah standing raght ovah there." Rogue points to the spot she saw the large figure.
Remy looks around her room, checking her closet and bathroom, finding no one. He turns to her and noticed she was still shaken up. "Y' want me t' stay wit' y'?" He asks, softly.
"Actually… can we stay in yoah room?" Rogue asks, looking down at her feet.
Remy gives her small smile. "If 'll make y' feel bettah, den soah."
Remy puts his arm around her, flipping off her light, then peers back into her room before closing the door. He makes a face, still getting an uneasy feeling, but shakes it off after he shuts the door and quietly leads her to his room. Remy opens his door, guiding Rogue to his bed after shutting his door. Rogue reaches her hands out to feel the bed, climbing on top and sitting down. Remy sits behind her, his arms snaking around her body as he nuzzles his face into her hair. "Were ya havin' trouble sleepin' too?" Rogue asks quietly.
"Yeah." Remy whispers back. "Kept tossin' an' turnin'. I got a weird feelin' t', which made me check on y'."
Rogue puts her hands over his, sinking back against him. "Ya got a weird feelin'?"
Remy nods. "Jus' had t' see if y' were okay. I had dis sinkin' feelin'…"
"Ah'm glad ya came," Rogue smiles lightly. "Ah think if ya hadn't.. ah maght not have been heah in the mornin'…."
Remy looks at her, brows furrowed. "Y' sure dere was someone in y' room?"
"Ah'm soah." Rogue nods, serious. "There was a hand reachin' out fer meh. Ah couldn't even scream… it's lahke mah voice didn't work…"
Remy kisses her head. "'M heah now, so if anyone tries t' come an' get y', dey gotta go through me."
Rogue smiles sleepily. The two still sat snuggled up together, slowly dozing off as they held each other. Rogue felt her eyes shut but she opens them again, trying to force herself to stay awake. It wasn't until the third blink that she saw a figure in the corner of the room, making her wide awake again. "Remy," She hisses. "Do ya see that?"
Remy blinks awake, squinting his tired eyes. He grabs a card from his pocket and charges it, quickly flickering on the lamp on his bedside table, revealing no figure. "Okay… dis light stayin' on." Remy says, tiredly.
Rogue nods, Remy sighing and taking the charge away from the card. "But ya saw it too?" She asks.
Remy nods. "Eit'er our eyes are playin' tricks on us, or someone's watchin' us…"
The two eventually fall back asleep with the lamp on, but it wasn't until the sun was starting to come up as the rain was still coming down. They slept through breakfast, Hank knocking on Remy's door and peering in to find the two still asleep in a tangle of limbs with the lamp on. "Yup, they're still asleep." Hank says as he enters the kitchen where Logan and Storm were.
"Rogue usually doesn't sleep this late…" Logan raises a brow as he takes a sip from his coffee.
"Well, Remy's lamp was on while they both slep-" Hank starts, but Logan spits out his coffee, choking on it a bit.
"What did you say, Hank?" Logan coughs.
"Remy's lamp was left on."
"No the part after that."
"While they both slept. They looked exhausted though." Hank rubs his chin.
"Well, they're still recovering mentally from being prisoners." Storm says.
"I think I'll go wake them up." Logan growls.
He heads upstairs, Hank and Storm following to make sure Logan doesn't skewer the Cajun. Logan bangs on Remy's door loudly, alerting the two sleeping southerners. "Open up, Gumbo." Logan growls.
Remy yawns and tiredly opens the door. "What y' want?"
"Ya'll mahnd? Ah'm tryna sleep!" Rogue growls, placing a pillow over her head.
Logan crosses his arms. "And just what do you two think you're doing?"
Remy blinks, a blank expression on his face. "Whatcha mean?"
"What I mean is, what are you two doing havin' a sleepover?" Logan sighs.
"Ohhh," Remy answers, rubbing the back of his neck. "Couldn' sleep, but also dere was someone in Rogue's room last night."
"What?" Hank and Storm both exclaim.
"Then it was in heah too but disappeared aftah Remy turned on the lamp…" Rogue mumbles from under the pillow, but Logan heard her.
"You mean someone else besides you was in Rogue's room last night?" Logan questions.
"Yep." Remy nods.
"I'm going to go check it out." Logan growls.
"'M'kay. 'M goin' back t' bed fo' a bit." Remy shuts the door in his face, immediately going back into his bed with Rogue, who was back asleep.
"How did someone even sneak in?" Storm questions.
"Our defenses would alert us…" Hank rubs his chin, thinking.
"I don't know, but I'm going to find out." Logan heads right for Rogue's room, opening the door and looking around.
Logan sniffs around the room, finding Rogue's scent and some of Remy's. He pauses when he catches a small whiff of another scent in a corner, growling a bit. "Whoever was here, made sure they weren't going to get caught…" Logan looks back at Hank and Storm. "I'm going to be patrolling the halls tonight and if I smell that scent, I'm catching whoever it is."
"I'll help you. I can pull an all nighter, wouldn't be my first time." Hank offers.
"Fine by me. We should alert Charles though." Logan shrugs.
"I agree. It's a possibility that Mister Sinister isn't truly dead." Storm agrees, the trio heading out and shutting Rogue's bedroom door and going straight towards Xavier's office.
"Hey Chuck, we got something to tell ya." Logan announces as they enter Charles office, the Professor expecting them.
"Yes, I am aware of the situation, Logan. I sensed a presence in the mansion last night, but I could not pinpoint where, until now." Charles nods. "I fear this is only the beginning though."
"So what can we do? Haven't they been through enough?" Logan growls.
Charles looks up at Logan, sadly. "I do not think it is just Remy and Rogue, Logan, but Scott and Jean as well."
Logan, Storm and Hank look at the Professor wide eyed. "But… Evan and Scott defeated Mister Sinister." Storm's brows furrow.
"Perhaps for a short period of time. We must keep an eye on the four. I fear Mister Sinister won't hesitate to come here and strike. We don't know if he will have help either. I think it'd be best to keep the four together." Charles puts his hands together on his desk, trying to think deeply about his decision. "I suggest we inform them now while we still have time."
