Chapter two, "The academy"

I didn't sleep well that night. I was way too exited for my new life to begin. When I finally fell asleep, it was already past midnight, and it felt like I've been asleep for only five minutes when my arlam started going at 4 in the morning.

Even though I was really tired, I was full of energy and exitement. I quickly turned off my alarm and put on the black cargo pants and the white T-shirt I've already layed out yesterday.

I nearly ran to the bathroom to brush my teeth and wash my face, before I put my hair into a ponytail, really trying to make it look good for the first time of my life.

I just finished getting ready, when my mom stepped into the room. She looked my up and down and nodded. „You can go like this, you gotta hurry up if you want to have breakfast before we leave.", she said and headed to the kitchen, leaving me with the big suitcase.

I tried my best to carry the suitcase downstairs and I managed to get it down without dropping it. I stepped into the kitchen, where mom just placed a bowl of yoghurt infront of me and told me to quickly finish it.

So I finished my breakfast, then I stepped outside with my parents and we headed to the train station. Since we live in the victors village the next train station is only ten minutes by walking. My parents didn't care about the fact that I had to carry the suitcase and walked as fast as they usually do.

We arrived at the station right on time and the train was already there. I stepped into it. My dad lifted the suitcase into the train and gave me cold look. „We have a reputation, don't ruin it.", he said strictly, before turning away.

My mom gave me a little book. „It's your passport, don't loose it, it's important.", she said. She looked me into the eyes, the doors began to close, as the train was about to leave. „Don't dissappoint us, Clove, we'll see you.", she said, then the train left the station and got faster and faster.

I took my suitcase and sat on a seat next to the window. For a while I looked at the landscape, but I got bored after some time.

Since the academy was on the opposite end of the district and this train wasnt a super modern one from the capitol, I'd have to sit in here for six hours. I tried to fall asleep, since I was really tired and time goes by faster when youre sleeping, but I was way to exited to sleep.

I stared the little book that mom called my passport and took a closer look. There was Panems symbol on the outside and when I opened it I could also see the symbol of district two. On the next page there was a picture of me. I shivered, I looked creepy on that picture, I wasn't smiling and my eyes looked way darker than they actually are.

Under my picture there was some text. I think the letters under the picture were saying my name: Clove Kentwell. But I wasn't a hundret percent sure since I wasn't able to read yet. Further down, there was more text and I tried my best to figure out what it was saying but I failed.

I sighed and put the passport away and looked out of the window again. There wasn't much to see, we were driving through a rather rural area and the only thing I could see were sheeps and some small houses.

Just in the moment were I thought I couldn't handle my boredom anymore. A woman enterd the compartement. She was rather small and skinny but she looked like that kind of person you shouldn't mess with.

She sat down a few rows behind me and since I was bored I kept watching her. She had long, blonde, long hair, wich she had put up into a strict ponytail and she wore a jacket with the symbol of district two and some jeans. I knew her from somewhere but I had no clue who she was.

She suddenly looked up and stared at me. I quickly looked away, since she just caught me starring. Suprisingly she didn't seem mad.

She walked closer and sat next to me. „Aren't you a little young for the academy?", she asked me concerned. „I might be young, but I'm good and I will win one day, so I gotta start training early."

She laughed. „Oh, youre a tough one, I like that, you'll get far with this attitude.", she said. „So whats your name?"

„Im Clove, Clove Kentwell.", I responded. „A Kentwell, well that explains everything. I know your parents, I went to the academy with them, your father was 52nd games and your mother 57th ,right?"

„She was 58th" , I corrected her. „Oh yes right, she was two years after me. Im Lyme, nice to meet you Clove." Now I knew who that woman was, ofcourse I've heard of her, she won the 56th Hunger games.

I spend the next hours talking with Lyme. I learned that she works at the academy as a trainer and she told me a lot about her games and the academy and answered all of my questions.

When the train arrived at the academy it was around three in the noon. Lyme helped me get my suitcase out of the train. „I have to go now, the academy is in that direction, the big building over there, you'll be there in five minutes, tell them youre name and give them your passport, I'll see you soon, okay?"

Then she walked away, leaving me alone with my little suitcase. I straightened up and started walking to the building, that Lyme told me was the academy.

As I stepped closer, I realized how big it was. It was a big building, made of dirty, grey bricks. It looked excatly like you'd imagine a place where you train children to kill other children one day. Not really warm and pretty.

A woman walked towards me. She looked young, not older than 25 and had brown long her, wich she wore in a pretty braid. „You must be one of the first-years. Tell me your name, so I can cross you from my list."

„I'm Clove Kentwell", I respondet. She looked at her list and nodded."Alright give me your passport please and then go sit with the others." I gave her my passport. „Thank you.", she said. „Now, the others are waiting in the entrance hall, we'll start with the tour around the building, as soon as everyone is here. You can leave youre luggage here, it will be brought to your room."

I left my suitcase where the woman told me to, then I went inside the building and sat down next to some other kids.

I took a closer look to them all and realized that all of them were at least two years older, some even more. Most of them looked scared, a girl was even crying. „Thats pathetic.", I thought, I mean how was she supposed to go through ten years of training if she cant even handle not being with her mommy for a few hours?

I looked at the pictures on the wall. They showed students who once went to the academy, that are really successfull now. Such as victors of former games, or really good peacekeepers. I could spot Enorbaria and Lyme and also my parents. „One day, there will be a picture of me here aswell.", I thought.

Some more kids walked in and at the end, when the woman also stepped in we were around 40. As soon as she stepped into the room, everyone got silent, even the older boys who were talking loudly the whole time stopped their conversation now.

She got in the middle of our little circle. „Good evening and welcome at the district two training academy. I'm Aliona, I trained here myself and I'm going to be your coach for the first years.", she introduced herself. „You are here to train for the games. This is no fun and no game, you will learn how to suvive in the arena and how to win and bring pride to our district. I exspect respect and ambition from you. So, before we start with our tour, I want everyone to introduce themselfes. After that I'll show you the academy, before you'll get assigned to your rooms."

She pointed at the girl next to her. „Can you start?" The girl was still crying and you could see how annoyed Aliona was about that, but she didn't say anything. „I-iam Lia Miller, seven years old.", the girl said with a shaking voice.

The boy next to her continued: „Caesar Bradford, seven years." It continued like that and everyone introduced themselfes, but I didn't even try to remember their names, why should I? I would be better than them anyways, there was no use in remembering their names, it was just a waste of energy.

At the end I figured out that none of the kids were younger than six, so I was the youngest with my four years. When everyone was finished we all got up.

„So, this is the entrance hall.", Aliona said. „The pictures you see here, are pictures of the most successfull graduates of the academy. Your goal should be to have a picture of you, hanging here one day."

We followed her through a long corridor, with some doors. „Here are some of the training areas. The ones on the first floor are for grade one to five. We'll train in this one", she pointed at one one the right side.

She opened the door and we followed her curious. I was stunned as I stepped inside. I've expected it to be big but that was unbelievable. On one side there were stations for every kind of weapon you could imagine. There was one area for fighting, one wall was compleatly transformed into a bouldering wall, there was a running track and so much more.

And if that wasnt enough in the next room there was a whole gym with every imaginable sports equipment.

„Pretty stunning I know, thats where youre going to train from now on.", Aliona explained.

We moved on and went upstairs to the second floor, where we got into a big room with lots of tables and chairs. „Thats the cafeteria. You'll have breakfast at six, lunch at one and dinner at six here.", Aliona explained.

We got to a corridor that had rooms that looked different, not like the training areas we had already seen. On the wall there were big mirrors and there were some kind of barres on the side.

„What are these for?", one of the older boys asked. Aliona turned around and followed his eyes. „Oh, these are the dance rooms, each one of you will learn how to do ballet. It will teach you self discipline, how to handle pain and it will strenghten your muscles."

Some of the boys looked annoyed and I was also surprised, but Aliona just moved on. „Ballet will be a huge benefit for your abilities and you will train it, thats the way it is.", she said with a voice that wouldn't allow any sort of contraddiction.

We visited more training areas and the school classrooms where we would go to school in the mornings as soon as we were third grade. I tried to memorize everything as well as possible but I was pretty sure I´d get lost pretty often.

As we walked upstairs to the third floor, I was expecting to see more training areas, but surprisingly, there were just lots and lots of corridors with enless amounts of rooms. Every room had a number and said a name.

„Here are your rooms. Every student has their own room, these rooms will be your homes for the next years. You all have your rooms on this corridor, just go to the rooms with your name on it, your luggage should already be in your rooms. Well meet at six in the cafeteria for dinner, there will be an alert ten minutes before. So you have about an hour to unpack your stuff and get ready.", Aliona explained.

I walked across the rooms pretty helpless since I couldn't read. I walked past a door with a name that looked like mine. I just hoped for the best and slowly pushed the door open and, luckily, found my suitcase laying on the bed.

I stepped inside, closed the door behind me and took a closer look at the room. It was pretty simple but I liked it. The walls where painted white, and there was a big window on the other side, showing the pretty sports grounds and the beginning of a forest.

Under the window was a bed with a metal frame. There was also a another door, leading to a small bathroom, a closet, wich contained a lot of clothes, a desk and a small bookshelf.

It was way prettier than I imagined it to be. I started unpacking my stuff, since it wasn't much, I was finished quickly, but the picture of my parents got my attention again.

I carefully took it out and looked at it for some time. It must have been taken right after my birth, my mom was wearing a tight, black dress and my dad wore an elegant black suit. Both were standing hand in hand on a stage, that big, that I assume it was in the capitol.

Both looked really happy as my dad has placed his arm around my moms waist while my mom held a little baby with black hair in her arms.

I turned the picture around. Someone has scribbled „The Kentwell family -summer '59th" on the back. So I was right, it was right after my birth, since I was born in may '59th.

I took the picture and put it in the highest drawer of my closet, placing a hoodie over it, so that no one would find it. I dont know why, but I felt the sudden urge to hide it and keep it safe.

I looked at the clock and realized that I still had 40 minutes left before dinner, so I decided to take a shower. I stepped into the bathroom and enjoyed the warm water on my skin, before I scrubbed my body with the soap I found in the bathroom drawer. It smelled really good, way better than the one at home, like a mix between peach and vanilla, really great.

As I was done I stepped out of the shower and tried to get my hair as dry as possible with the towel, before I quickly put on a hoodie with the logo of the academy and some jeans.

Then I headed down to the cafeteria, hoping I would find the way and not get lost.
