Alice has betrayed Tom, the Fiend's head was stolen. One of the pagan goddesses took pity and decided to lend Tom a helping hand. The story picks up in chapter 22 of Spook's revenge. The first chapter of this story is a sort of recall for of the situation in chapter 22.

With the Kobalos and there god Talkus defeated Tom ward returns home with a broken heart and damaged mind, however there is no rest for a spook as the dark is always on the move... (Spoilers for the last chapter of the dark assassin)

Separated by death, our spook and earth witch meet again in another life: the modern world. They reunite at a high school in Maine where Tom is a new arrival from Chipping, Lancashire and Alice has been in Maine for three years since 7th grade, and a misfit at that. However, a new (creepy) teacher arrives in the first class they happen to share and seems to focus solely on them.

Tom has read about this woman in the Bestiary. Moreso, has read about her terrifying parents (the Devil, supposedly, and Bony Lizzy). He just .. didn't expect her to be like this. AU but some things are the same. Tom x Alice :D
