Hinata finds out she is expecting another baby and is afraid of how Naruto will react. They never planned to have any more kids after Himawari and this was most definitely not the best time in their lives to add a new baby to the mix.
The story follows Hinata as she deals with this new information and contemplates how she is going to inform her husband of the news.
Hi everyone. I hope everyone is doing well. So I had this idea that just wouldn't leave my brain, so I had to write it down. Please note that I haven't watched Boruto aside from miscellaneous clips on Youtube so this will not be accurate to the show but will pick certain details that I use to my advantage. One of the things I did learn about Boruto was that Naruto is barely home because he is now the Hokage and my mind just went off with that information and somehow this is the result. It's not going to be a long fic, maybe 4 chapters or so, I haven't decided. I apologise if characters seems a little OOC. I tried to make it as true as I felt they would be with slight variations due to age and circumstances. I hope you enjoy. Please leave a review and tell me what you think. Enjoy!
Chapter 1: A Day in the Life, with Unexpected News
If anyone was asked to describe Hinata Hyuga in one word, the general consensus would be quiet or shy and honestly, Hinata would agree. She had always been more soft and silent. Growing up in her family, it was to be expected. They were certain standards and expectations of a Hyuga princess and despite trying her whole life to live up to it, Hinata always felt like she fell short of that standard. So she made sure to never be a burden on those around her, only revealing her true self to her sister. Later on, her cousin Neji became a trusted confidant. Once they got past the tension and misunderstandings, Hinata felt like Neji was her brother in the truest sense of the word. Nevertheless, Hinata, while comfortable with her sister and cousin, never truly revealed all of herself and as such her home life was often solitary and quiet.
The war changed her a lot; losing her cousin, amongst others really took its toll on her. She would often have nightmares about what would have happened if they lost the war; what would have happened if she lost Naruto. She would regularly get jittery and act on instinct or she would flinch at loud noises. Those days were difficult and she would retreat into her own head. But the war didn't just change her, the Hyuga family changed as well and she genuinely felt like her father respected and loved her. Although on the mend, the formality of the Hyuga name persisted but Hinata was familiar with the silence.
Naruto, unlike the Hyuga was the least formal or silent person she knew and so spending time with him in his apartment was always chaos and liveliness. Even in the beginning of their relationship Naruto was constantly in motion, buzzing around the house. If she was in the kitchen, he would help her prepare and then sit and the counter and regal her with his many stories. If she was filling out mission reports or reading he would hover close by, reminding her of his presence. If they were watching a movie he would hold her and card his fingers through her hair, whispering sweet nothings in her ear.
When they got married his apartment became their home and the constant motion and noise persisted, with bursts of laughter and intense debates. If not, then the house would be filled with the moans and sighs of their love-making. Being with Naruto was unlike anything she imagined and with every passing day Hinata become more and more talkative and lively, feeling more like herself than she ever did in her childhood home.
Just when she had felt like she had gotten accustomed to the whirlwind that was Naruto, she became pregnant with Boruto, and a baby resulted in a new wave of chaos in their house. By the time Himawari was born, Hinata couldn't imagine living without the hustle and bustle of her kids and husband.
All in all, mayhem was something Hinata had grown fond of. She is broken out of her thoughts by the sounds of her husband getting ready for work and her kids shuffling about in preparation for school. She's in the kitchen, packing their lunches when she hears the soft pitter patter of her daughter's footsteps followed by the slightly heavier thud of her son.
"Morning mama," Hima chirps happily as she seats herself at the kitchen table. Hinata turns around and gently places a bowl on the table in front of her daughter.
"Good morning my sweet girl," she smiles, placing a gentle kiss to her daughters hair.
"Good morning Boruto," she turns to her son, placing his bowl in front of him. The rumpled 12 year old looked barely awake and grumbles out what sounded like a greeting. She smiles and ruffles his hair; her son had never been good at mornings, "the cereal goes in the bowl Bolt," she advises helpfully, when she sees him about to blindly pour his cereal into his bowl.
"Today is going to be so much fun mama, we're not gonna be doing any school cause everyone has to help set up for the market day festival tomorrow," the little girl excitedly speaks during bites of her breakfast, imagining how her day would go.
"Wow, that sounds like fun. I know how much you love helping," and that was true, Hima was such a helpful compassionate person that it surprised Hinata sometimes considering the little girl's age. But that's not to say her daughter doesn't have a temper. Hinata thinks it's because she feels her emotions so strongly and because of that when she gets angry she gets livid.
"You're still gonna make cupcakes for the market day tomorrow, right mama?" Himawari asks for the 6th time this week. The academy is having a market day festival tomorrow, as a way to raise funds and teach the children how to be responsible for different tasks. Ever since the end of the war, the need for shinobis had vastly decreased and people were given broader choices when it came to school and work. As such the academy began focusing on different fields and educating children about different paths of life. Hinata found herself pleased with the outcome. Although being a shinobi was rewarding in itself, it is nice to know that her children could grow up in a world where they can have more of a choice in how they want to spend their life.
"Yes honey, I'm going to do it as soon as I drop you off at the academy and I promise to wait for you and Boruto until we do the icing and decorations." Boruto murmurs out a slightly clearer response this time, "thanks mom."
One of the most surprising things Hinata found was that Boruto genuinely enjoyed baking with her. Hinata had always found baking to be a very relaxing experience, it helped her focus on something and helped her clear her head when she was stressing or worried. Naruto, for all his help with cooking, never had the patience for her baking and would always try to distract her during the process. Hima just enjoyed eating and decorating the various baked goods, but Boruto actually enjoyed the process. Afterwards, baking became something that they would do together and bond over.
All three heads turn in the direction of their hallway to look at Naruto walking in a hurried pace and mumbling to himself, "I'm late, I'm late, I'm late…"
He pauses in his ramblings to ruffle both Boruto's and Himawari's hair in greeting, "morning guys."
"Quick question," Boruto asks, "when have you ever been where you needed to be before it was time?" he finishes off sarcastically, before standing up to place his empty bowl in the sick.
"I was there before you were born!" Naruto quips back although his words have no bite to them. Neither does Boruto's. They have been much better at getting along lately, but for some reason they still found it necessary to exchange words filled with sarcasm and mock insult.
"That totally doesn't count!" Boruto protests.
"Of course it counts! Hinata tell him it counts." Naruto turns to her for back-up and Himawari giggles at her father and brother's antics. Hinata just shakes her head in exasperation at the two. It's so easy for Naruto to revert to his childish self and she knows for a fact Boruto likes to rile him up for that exact reason.
"Papa, do you remember the day I was born?" the blue-eyed girl questions innocently.
"Do I ever?" Naruto asks rhetorically. "I'll never forget the day you were born, one of the happiest days of my life," he boops her teasingly on the nose before furrowing his brows, "it was also the day your mother broke my nose," he recalls. Hinata's on another level when she gets angry, not even Sakura can rival her, in Naruto's opinion; though to be honest the nose thing was entirely his fault.
"Mom! You broke Dad's nose?" Boruto's eyes bulges out in sheer shock at the statement.
"That's not important right now," Hinata absent-mindedly says but also not in wanting to share that particular story with her kids. "Naruto, didn't you say you were late? And Boruto you will be too if you don't leave soon," she concludes; attempting to drive the family out of the house otherwise they will all be late.
"You're right," Naruto says scarfing down a slice of toast. "Have you seen my Hokage hat, I can't seem to remember where I placed it," he enquires as he wipes his hands on the hand towel.
"Yes Naruto, your hat is where it's always been, on the rack specifically intended for it," Hinata chides. He always leaves his hat and cloak in odd places of the house and conveniently forgets about it. Then it's up to Hinata to put it back in its respective place and every time she scolds him for it he scratches the back of his head sheepishly and places a kiss on her cheek in apology; exactly as he is doing now.
Only this time his lips travel further down to engulf hers in a heartfelt kiss. His arms wind itself around her waist and he squeezes her to his chest. His embrace never fails to make her weak in the knees.
"Seriously guys? You're supposed to be old. That's disgusting," Boruto blanches.
"Old people kiss too Bolt," Naruto retorts before remembering to be offended at the comment, "and we're not old."
Hinata sighs yet again as she watches her husband make his way to the exit of their house, "Naruto don't forget to grab your hat," she reminds him.
While Naruto grabs his hat, Hinata turns to grasp all their lunch boxes and hand it to them one by one before the whole family make their way out of the house to start their day.
XOXO
A FEW HOURS LATER Hinata is busy in the kitchen preparing for Himawari's school festival the next day. She pauses in her ministrations when she hears knocking on the door. Wiping her hands she makes her way to the front to find Sakura waiting at the entrance.
"Hi Hinata," she greets with a warm smile. "I'm guessing you forgot," she states wryly.
At her quizzical look Sakura explains, "We were supposed to have lunch today and catch up."
Realisation dawns on Hinata before a wave of guilt follows, "Oh Sakura, I'm so sorry. It completely slipped my mind."
"That's okay. I figured so. But it's been forever since I've seen you so I decided to stop by anyway. Is that okay?" Sakura asks.
"Yes, yes," the dark haired woman states moving aside to make room for her friend to enter. "I'll make us tea and we can talk."
Hinata walks into the kitchen to put on the kettle while Sakura makes herself comfortable at the table. "I was busy making baking. Himawari requested cupcakes for her market day because she believes no one can be sad if there are cupcakes," she explains fondly. Her little girl has this aura of happiness and simplicity to life that is simply infectious.
The kitchen counter was neatly organised with mixing bowls, batter, trays and the works. Hinata abandons the counter and makes her way to the cupboard where she takes out two mugs and begins preparing the tea.
"Himawari is just too precious," Sakura praises, remarking on Hinata's previous statement.
"So how are you?" she asks. Now that most of their friend group are married and have kids it is difficult for them to hangout and it's even rarer for them to all spend time together at the same time. They usually meet up in small groups whenever they have the opportunity. Sakura is usually busy at the hospital and even when the girls get together she often misses out so she tries to meet up with her friends individually whenever she has spare time.
"I'm well thanks. I've just been really busy with everything. No one tells you how much you have to put in as children get older, but I like it. I've gotten used to the constant chaos of everyone. What about you?" Hinata enquires as she walked to the table and places a steaming cup of tea in front of her friend.
Sakura inhales the scent and steam of her mug before sighing, "I've been great. Things are getting interesting at the hospital and it helps that Sasuke is back on a more permanent basis now. I feel like we're a real family and it's so endearing to see him try to bond with Sarada."
"That's really nice that Sasuke is trying so hard. I'm really happy for you," Hinata says genuinely. She woke up again to retrieve a plate of biscuits. She would offer Sakura some cupcakes but she promised her kids that she would wait for them to decorate it and she didn't want to disappoint them.
"What about Naruto? Things okay after the 'Boruto Incident'?" Sakura whispers like it was a secret despite the fact that they are the only ones in the house. The incident in question was Himawari's birthday over a month ago that Naruto was incredibly late for. By the time he came home Himawari was already in bed, disheartened but trying desperately not to show it. Boruto ended up waiting up for his father and then shouted at him for ruining everything and ending off his speech by saying that he hated him. Hinata had to do a lot of damage control after that. She had to chastise Boruto for speaking so rudely to Naruto but at the same time acknowledge his feelings. Naruto was harder to talk to, understanding how painful it must have been to hear Boruto say that and reassure him that their son didn't hate him, he was just sad. Himawari was actually the one who helped the most, managing to comfort both her brother and father without much hassle.
But by the end of it, Boruto's outburst did more good than harm because it resulted in Hinata and Naruto having a serious conversation where they realised they needed to make some changes in their lives. "Things are going well. Naruto is making a conscious effort to be around more and spend time with both the kids." Hinata grins happily recalling their redo birthday for Himawari where they ate cake and played silly games until late in the night.
"Yes, but you're also spending time with Naruto as well right? I was reading this article in this book – and oh my word I sound like Sai -" she cringes at the thought, "anyway I was reading this article and it said that it's important for a married couple to remember that they are not just parents. They need to remember that they are a couple as well and need to do romantic things, just the two of them. I mean you are still…" she trails off wagging her eyebrows suggestively which prompts Hinata to blush scarlet. She has gotten more open and willing in terms of their sexual life but Hinata would never be comfortable talking about it with their friends. She prefers their bedroom antics to be private but still manages a small nod as Sakura's question.
"Oh good. That's great." Sakura comments and then changes the topic, deciding Hinata had enough pestering about the subject.
They spent the next few minutes talking about their lives, Hinata alternating between the dining room and the kitchen. She has a few minutes left before she has to leave to fetch Himawari from the academy. Sakura leans back on her chair, "thanks for the tea Hinata, it really helped with my stomach ache."
"Oh, I didn't realise you were in pain. Is everything okay?" Hinata bites the bottom of her lip in concern.
"Oh no, it's nothing serious," she waves her hand dismissively. "It's just that time of the month and you know the second day is the worst. My lower back usually troubles me when I'm on my feet but thankfully I have the day off."
"I have an ointment for body pains. It's really helpful."
"Thank Hinata, I really appreciate it," Sakura smiles gratefully.
"Wait here, let me get it for you," Hinata decides before making her way into the house, straight to her and Naruto's bathroom.
She goes directly to their medicine cabinet and rifles through the assortment of medication before she lands on the healing ointment in question. She momentarily pauses as she sees an unopened box of her feminine hygiene product. That's not right. She's pretty sure that she would need to buy a few more packs soon. But staring back at her is an unopened pack of tampons. She quickly darts to the calendar to the side where she tracks her period and goes back to the past month. She looks at the date on this month and then back at the date on the previous month. How did she miss this? According to the calendar and real time she's late for her period. But that doesn't make any sense.
If there's one thing she and Naruto are diligent about it is safe sex. After Himawari they always take the necessary precautions. She's frozen in the bathroom for a while and then almost in a daze she makes her way back to the kitchen.
"Here you go," she hands over the medication. Sakura is already standing up with her bag slung over her shoulder, ready to leave, "Thanks again Hinata."
"You're welcome. Let me walk you out," the dark-haired woman offers and they both make their way to the front door. Sakura is smiling and saying something but Hinata is still in shock, redoing the calculations in her head and wondering what the hell was happening to her.
After what seems like forever for Sakura to leave, Hinata rushes back to her bathroom and looks at her calendar again. There's no mistaking it. She is late, almost three weeks late; which was unheard of for her because she is always organised when it comes to things like this.
Okay.
Okay.
She just needs to take a deep breath and process this. A late period could mean a number of different things. Of course the most obvious one would be pregnancy her mind supplied not in the least bit helpful.
But… No.
She couldn't be pregnant. Right? It had to be something else.
She walks back to her bedroom and faces the floor length mirror, hiking up her knee length purple dress, not caring that she was exposing her limbs. She just wanted to see her stomach. She turned to the side and inspected it in the mirror. It wasn't entirely flat, but that was normal. She did give birth to two humans. Her stomach was a little squishy and littered with stretch marks here and there. But it didn't look bigger than usual. She turned full frontal before taking a deep breath and said, "Byakugan!"
Her eyes track the path of her body, following her chakra network until her eyes lands on her stomach, focusing. It was small but clear, distinguishable and there, a second chakra, attached to her own, but still an individual part. There is no mistaking it. Hinata is pregnant! There is a baby growing in her belly. She had to constantly remind herself to take deep breaths otherwise she will definitely have a panic attack.
Her eyes dart to the clock in their bedroom; she can't do this now. She needs to pick up Hima from school. Taking another gulp of air she steeled herself. She can't think about this now and she definitely cannot think about Naruto right now because the idea of telling him terrifies her. How are they going to have another baby right now? With the way their life is right now, she can't imagine adding a baby to the list. There's chaos and then there's pandemonium but seeing that tiny ball of chakra inside her did something to her. She blinks rapidly so she wouldn't cry. Now is not the time to cry. Now she needs to go pick up her daughter from the academy. This life changing information was going to have to wait a little longer.
