This story is a crossover between the Goosebumps book series and the video game Control by Remedy. When playing Control, i couldn't help but notice similarities to Goosebumps. Like, a cursed mirror with an evil reflection of the protagonist, like the Goosebumps book Let's Get Invisible. Plus, the same book had a light switch that did strange things. So i thought it'd be fun to mix the series together. I WILL feature the mirror from Let's Get Invisible, and the camera from Say Cheese And Die, which in here is an Altered Item, like the mirror. The story starts in Egypt, with Gabe, Sari, and Uncle Ben, immediately after the events of Return Of The Mummy. When the story begins, an evil rival of Ben shows up, claiming to have knowledge of a hidden chamber. Once inside, Sari suffers a life-changing accident, and finds herself bound to a strange entity. Similar to Jesse. Perhaps a cousin of Polaris? Later, the entity beckons Sari and company to New York, to the Oldest House. I also plan to include Jesse, and everybody else from the game, and other characters from Goosebumps. Including everybody's favorite dummy. Slappy in league with the Hiss? Uh oh...
This story is rated M for violence, language, scary scenes, and implications of incest. So, reader beware. I own nothing except some original characters. Everything else belongs to RL Stine and Remedy.
Chapter 1:
Gabe had just crawled into his sleeping bag in the tent, and was just closing his eyes to go to bed, when he felt a pinch on his bare foot!
"Ouch!! Cut it out, Sari!!!", he cried, sitting up. Sure enough, there sat his cousin, with a big smile on her face.
"How did you know it was me?", she asked, still grinning.
Gabe rolled his eyes.
"Give me a break, Sari. If you really WERE a scarab, I'd have died instantly. INSTANTLY! You really think I'd have had time to cry out in pain and be yelling at you now?!"
Sari laughed. "Wow, you really HAVE changed after this adventure. I really thought I'd scare you good!" Her expression suddenly turned serious. " I AM worried though. What if Nila really DOES come back for revenge? She got away. She could still be in the pyramid, waiting for us all to go to sleep, then come curse us, or bite us. "
Gabe groaned and rolled his eyes again. " Go to bed Sari. You're just trying to scare me again. It's not going to work. I destroyed her pendant that kept her young, remember? She turned into a scarab and ran away. She's probably going to die. Now go away. "
Sari shook her head, her expression still serious. "But what if she doesn't? What if she's still powerful, and wants revenge? Ahmed got away last time, and he's still out there somewhere. Don't you remember what HE did? He terrorized those diggers. He hurt daddy. He tried to burn us alive. And he got away!! Now Nila might get away too!"
"Well what do you want to do, Sari?! Are you saying we should go back into the pyramid and look for her? And then what? If she's still a bug, do what? Squash her? Or catch her in a jar and keep her as a pet?"
Sari looked at the floor of the tent. " I don't know. I just feel like we have to do SOMETHING. We can't let the bad guys win TWICE. We should..."
But she stopped as a noise approached the camp. Her and Gabe both heard it at the same time: the sound of approaching vehicles. Suddenly light flooded the tent as headlights approached. Gabe turned to Sari.
"Was your dad expecting somebody?" She shook her head, and the two approached the tent entrance as the cars pulled up outside.
Several vans had stopped outside the row of tents, and people were already pouring out. In the next tent, Uncle Ben marched out of his tent, walking towards the unexpected visitors. Dr Omar Fielding, his fellow researcher, followed closely behind. Gabe and Sari stayed in their tent, watching this strange new scene.
One of the new men walked toward Ben. He was tall and rather muscular, with short blonde hair and tan skin. He wore brown shorts and a white sleeveless shirt that looked rather tight on his large muscular chest. Even from the tent, Gabe could see his teeth glisten as he smiled at Ben as he held out his hand. Gabe shuddered. Something about his smile was chilling.
"Ben. So great to see you after so long. How are you?", the man said.
"Reynolds", Ben replied in a voice Gabe had never heard him use. A voice full of anger and loathing. "You've got a lot of nerve coming here, after what you pulled last time. "
Reynolds chuckled, a cold chuckle that made Gabe's hairs stand up. "You mean that thing in Baladora? That was like, what, five years ago. Water under the bridge I'd say, right?"
Ben took an angry step towards Reynolds, and for a moment Gabe thought his uncle was going to punch Reynolds, but Fielding stepped between them. "Now look here, this is OUR site. You have no business here. Besides, we're done here, we were going to start setting back to Cairo tomorrow. Nothing to see here. "
Reynolds smiled his cold smile again. "Well, it just so happens we have word of another chamber, hidden even further. So secret not even the priests or pharoahs knew. Legend has it that cults used that chamber to access the astral plane. It was a hot spot of paranatural activity. We think we've found the exact location of this chamber. "
Gabe heard his uncle scoff. He clearly hated Reynolds. Fielding himself tsk-tsked. " Really, we've spent weeks down here, and found no such thing. We've combed every inch, and found no hint of any chamber. Even if there was, it's too late now. As i said, our time here is done, we are due to head back tomorrow. "
Reynolds tried a different tactic. Dropping his smug smile, he said, in a less superior voice. " But what harm could it possibly do? As i said, we have the supposed EXACT location. And my men here have the tools. All it would take is an hour at the most. If we find nothing, we will leave in the morning as well. No harm done. We came all the way from Alexandria. Lots of gas, and these were very expensive tools to rent. We can't return empty-handed, or without at least proof we tried. "
Ben practically spat as he replied. "Why should YOUR problems concern US?! We got what WE came for, and to be honest I've had enough of Egypt to last the rest of my life!! As Omar has said twice, we are done!"
As Ben and Reynolds argued, Gabe and Sari looked at each other in shock. They had never seen Ben so angry. Sari had always known her father as a kind, calm, level-headed man. And Gabe had always known him as a joker, very easygoing. How did he know this man, and what had happened between them that made Ben so angry?
The arguing between the men continued, but they had lowered their voices, so Gabe and Sari could no longer hear. But they didn't dare leave the tent, because they didn't want Ben to know they were awake and eavesdropping.
Finally, Fielding spoke up. "Ok, ok, Reynolds. Fine. One hour. ONE. If nothing is found within one hour, you are to leave TONIGHT. I will not risk any damage to this historic site. I already called the police to stop Ben's team here from doing anything foolish, just ask him. i will have no problem doing it again. Understood?"
Reynolds shrugged. "Fair enough. Let's get started right away, shall we? We already have a schematic of the corridors, and can simply go to the exact location of the chamber. " Reynolds turned to his men and started barking out orders. Gabe and Sari ducked back into the tent and closed the curtain as Ben and Fielding approached, arguing.
" I don't like this, Omar. i don't like this one bit", Ben said, as the two approached Ben's tent. " You don't know this guy. I do. He is bad news. "
The two had obviously stopped right outside the tent, because Gabe and Sari heard their voices clearly. " I don't like it either, but i feel our hands are tied. The Alexandria museum hired them, not Cairo. I can't believe the museum society went over our heads by hiring another team. This is fucking outrageous. But i WILL call the police to come, just in case things get out of hand. We can't be too careful. They will simply come and stand guard, but do nothing unless we need them. "
"Good thinking ", Ben replied. " Knowing Reynolds, we probably WILL need them."
The two men moved away, still talking, but Gabe and Sari could no longer hear them as they moved out of earshot. Gabe turned to Sari.
"What's going on?", he asked. "Who is that guy? What were they talking about, when he mentioned Baladora?"
Sari shrugged, her expression confused and frightened. " I don't know, I've never seen that man in my life, and dad's never mentioned him. But years ago, he went to a place called Baladora, to explore some old ruins or something. I was back in the States back then. I don't know what happened, but when dad came back he was... different. He looked... haunted, like something bad had happened. He was distant. He barely talked to anybody, hardly came out of his room for a long time. I'd never seen him like that."
They sat in silence as they listened to the commotion outside. Reynolds was still giving orders to his team. They heard people pass by the tents as they walked to the pyramid. By the sounds of it, some men were carrying equipment. After several minutes, they heard Fielding's voice as he reemerged from his tent.
"Alright, if we're going, let's go. I want to get this over with. Come along, Ben."
"Just a sec, i just want to check on the children. "
Gabe and Sari gasped. Quickly, so fast they almost tripped over each other, they dived back onto the tent floor and jumped in their sleeping bags. They had just put their heads back on their pillows and shut their eyes when the tent flap opened and Ben's voice whispered.
"Gabe? Sari? You two asleep?"
Trying to do her best to convince her father, Sari gave a small moan and rolled over in her bag beside Gabe. Gabe himself lay as still as he could, pretending to be sound asleep.
Ben lingered in the tent entrance for another few seconds, watching the two children for any sign of having been woken, then finally closed the flap and walked off. "They're asleep. Thank God. Did you call the police?"
"Yes i did. They said they'll be here in at least fifteen minutes. The nearest station is almost next town over. Hopefully we won't need them, but better safe than sorry, especially after what happened yesterday. "
Ben growled. " I don't like this, Omar. i don't like this. One. Bit. Wherever Reynolds is, there's trouble. He's up to something, i just KNOW it. Let's go."
The children listened as the men's footsteps faded. Finally, when they were sure the coast was clear, they sat up.
" We've got to go in after them.", Sari said immediately.
"HUH??! Excuse me?!!", Gabe said in disbelief.
Sari stood up and pulled on her shoes. "We have to go after them. I'm worried about daddy, with those men. He could have been killed today, with Nila and the mummy. I have to make sure he's going to be ok. Come on Gabe!!"
Gabe groaned. He knew Sari wouldn't take no for an answer. She never did. Not only was Sari the most competitive 13 year old he knew, she was also the most stubborn. But, he had to admit, she was also pretty brave and headstrong.
Plus, he himself wanted to see what was going on. What was Reynolds talking about when he mentioned an "astral plane?" It sounded strange, but also interesting. He just knew he and Sari HAD to see this chamber for themselves.
"COME ON, Gabe!!!", Sari urged, breaking him out of his thoughts. "Ok, ok, gimme a second. "
Quickly, Gabe pulled on his shoes. Then, before he joined Sari at the tent entrance, he reached into his suitcase and pulled out the ancient mummy hand.
It was called a Summoner. He had bought it at a yard sale. The kid who'd sold it to him claimed it could summon spirits from the underworld. Gabe had thought it was a joke, but last year the hand had indeed brought to life a roomful of mummies beneath a pyramid. It had ended up saving their lives from the crazed cultist Ahmed. And just yesterday, Nila had briefly seized the Summoner to control her mummified brother.
According to Ahmed, it was the hand of the very Priestess he had served. Gabe wasn't sure of that, or even how it had ended up at that yard sale, but he was thankful for it, and kept it as a good luck charm. Stuffing it into his pocket, he joined Sari at the tent entrance. She handed him a flashlight, which he turned on, and, turning on her own, they ventured into the night.
Even with flashlights, it was darker than they thought it would be. They could barely make out the shapes of the vans Reynold's team had arrived in. Walking practically shoulder to shoulder, they walked towards the giant shadow of the pyramid.
They stopped at the entrance to the pyramid. The entrance was basically a gaping black hole. There were no lights, no torches. It made Gabe think of the maw of a giant beast, luring people inside, ready to snap shut once they walked in.
"Are we really doing this?", he asked her. He looked over at her. In the light from their flashlights, he could see she was as nervous as he was. But being Sari, she was determined to hide it as best she could, and would never admit it.
She nodded. "We HAVE to Gabe. I have a bad feeling about these men. I can't let daddy go down there alone with them. Come on."
She started walking, her flashlight barely lighting the dark corridor. He sighed, but started following her. He had a bad feeling about this. He reached into his pocket to touch the Summoner, and yanked his hand back out.
It was ice-cold again. When he'd first landed here a few days ago, it had been cold. Gabe was pretty sure it had been a warning, an omen. And sure enough, bad things had happened. And now it was so cold, he'd practically burned his fingers. What did this mean? Were they walking into danger like last time? Or perhaps something even worse?
End of chapter 1
So, what do you think so far? Sorry to end the first chapter so early, but i still need to brainstorm ideas. Full disclosure: I'm one of those write-in-the-heat-of-the-moment people. Basically, i sit and write as ideas come to me, instead of spending days thinking up ideas. I do all my best writing as it simply comes to me. So i don't know what will happen next. YET.
I know it's a weird process, but that's the way I've always written. But if you like what I've done so far, trust me when i say you won't be disappointed with whatever i come up with next, even if i myself don't yet know.
Anyway, next chapter we will see that life-changing incident with Sari i mentioned, and also clues linking to the astral plane, home of beings such as The Board and The Former, and probably other yet unknown beings. Then later we'll hopefully arrive at the Oldest House. Speaking of, i DO plan to show what's behind some of those other doors in the Oceanview Motel. This will hopefully be a long fanfic, with lots of time to explore those other worlds.
Anyway, I'll see y'all for chapter 2, hopefully very soon. Until then, take care, y'all!!!
