Gabriel was humming happily to himself as he and Figment explored Epcot together. The dragon of imagination was especially happy today after the recent announcements at Destination D23, to the point where Figment was excitedly shaking hands and taking photos with everyone they came across.
"You're really excited about getting a new meet and greet, aren't you Figment?" Gabriel chuckled.
"You betcha!" Figment nodded with a laugh. "I've got so many fans excited to see me again!"
"Maybe they'll actually update your ride someday as well," Gabriel mused. "I love Journey into Imagination, but the current version of the ride is getting up there in years."
"Ah well, at least we'll be getting a new Test Track soon. I can't wait to see the new version, especially if they're bring back ideas from World of Motion," Figment shrugged. "What about you, Gabriel? What are you most excited about of the new announcements."
"Oh it has to go to the new Zootopia theater attraction at Animal Kingdom," Gabriel replied. "I've been saying for years that Zootopia deserves a permanent spot at Animal Kingdom, so I'm glad that we're finally getting one. I would have preferred a whole land like they have in Shanghai, but the ideas for the Tropical Americas section looks neat too."
As the two conversed, Gabriel noticed a familiar face slinking around. It was Randall, one of Gabriel's teammates from the Power of Three Tournament and one of the few villains the raven could say was a friend (or at the very least an acquaintance). The reptilian monster was sneaking his way through the crowds of Epcot, using his camouflage ability to blend into the background as he went around into the World Showcase.
"Hey Figment, what do you think Randall is up to?" Gabriel asked.
"Hm, I'm not sure, but I think we should check out what our dragon buddy is up to!" Figment exclaimed.
The two tailed Randall, following him all the way to the Great Britain Pavilion where he stealthily slipped behind some trees. Going behind the tree, Gabriel found a door on the back of it, and entering it brought the two of them to a familiar enchanted neighborhood. "Huh, I didn't realize there was a backdoor to the Hundred Acre Woods here," Gabriel mused as they stepped out into Pooh's home world.
"Yeah, I thought you had to use Merlin's book to get here," Figment nodded.
"But what does Randall need to be here for…?" Gabriel wondered.
Continuing their journey, the duo soon found Randall near Rabbit's house, climbing up the tree and knocking on the door of the bird house up above. The monster then quickly turned invisible, out of sight as Kessie opened her door, yawning a bit before noticing a package on her doorstep. Opening it up, the little bird smiled as she saw that it was a birdseed cupcake, Kessie giving a happy chirp as she ate it up.
"So Randall got her a cupcake?" Figment wondered.
"I think he made the cupcake. He did have a thing for baking in his college years," Gabriel recalled.
"Oh, Gabriel, Figment!" Kessie called, noticing the two on the ground. She flew down into Gabriel's arms, giving the raven a hug. "What are you guys doing here?"
"We were following a certain monster all the way here," Gabriel said.
"Oh, you mean Randall?" Kessie guessed. "Yeah, he's been leaving me little treats for a while now, but he always hides away before I can thank him."
"You knew!?" Randall shouted, turning visible as he fell from the tree in shock.
"Hello Randall! Thank you for the cupcake," Kessie said.
"It was supposed to be a secret…" Randall muttered.
"But why go through all the trouble of keeping it a secret?" Gabriel asked.
Randall crossed his arms and looked away. "…Because I'm a bad guy. I'm supposed to do bad guy things, and giving little birds cupcakes is the opposite of that."
"Hm, it seems to me that you don't want to be bad anymore," Figment said.
"What? Of course I want to be bad! I'm the villain of my movie," Randall exclaimed.
"I'm pretty sure Waternoose is the villain of Monsters Inc. You're a bad guy, yeah, but he's the main bad guy that gets arrested at the end," Gabriel pointed out.
"So? Still a bad guy," Randall said.
"But you also have some sympathy to you, especially after we got your backstory in Monsters University," Gabriel went on. "You were a sweet kid, even being friends with Mike. But then you got accepted in Roar Omega Roar and gave into their peer pressure, and losing to Sulley made you swear revenge on them. Honestly, I pity you, Randall. You could have been friends with Mike and Sulley, but you got lead down a spiral of revenge that you were manipulated by Waternoose to help in his child kidnapping scheme."
"I don't need your pity…" Randall muttered.
Kessie looked to the monster and flew over to sit on his head. "Randall, it's okay if you don't want to be bad anymore. I think you making me treats is really sweet, and others would enjoy them too if you opened up."
"Yeah! You're part of Team Purple Dragons with me and Gabriel!" Figment nodded.
"So? The other villains already don't like me. You want to give them more of a reason to kick me out of their club?" Randall asked.
"I mean, if they already don't like you, then why should you try to kiss up to them?" Gabriel questioned. "Poe de Spell never got redeemed in his source material, but now he's on our side and even engaged to Rachel. My girlfriend Jasiri also has experience in helping villains reform, and they always benefit from coming over to the light side."
"Plus it's not like you're going to be in anything upcoming to contradict becoming a good guy," Figment pointed out. "I mean, are they even making another season of Monsters at Work?"
"I'm not sure, but I don't see a reason for them to bring Randall back regardless in that show," Gabriel shrugged.
Randall closed his eyes before giving a sigh. "Fine, maybe I am a little bit tired of being a bad guy. But it's not like I can just change overnight."
"And we're not going to ask you to do that," Gabriel said. "If you want, though, we can at least help you get on the track to reforming."
"…I guess we can try that," Randall said, rolling his eyes. "But if it doesn't work, I'm outta here."
"Great! Let's help Randall be a better person!" Figment cheered, pulling out a kazoo and blowing it.
"There's going to be a song, isn't there?" Randall asked.
"It's song time!" Kessie cheered as Gabriel started up the Fantasia.
We're taking over
We have the truth
This is the mission to see it through
With a flick of his wings the scene transitions into a montage, with Gabriel and Kessie standing in front of a whiteboard with "How to be Good" written on it while Randall and Figment sit in school chairs. Figments looks excited while Randall looks like he wants to die.
Don't point your finger
Not dangerous
This is our planet
You're one of us
We see Figment shaking hands and giving autographs to guests, smiling all the way. Gabriel gestures for Randall to try to do the same. Randall sighs and goes up to the nearest kid, giving an awkward smile that makes the kid cry. Their mother then whacks Randall with her purse, knocking him to the ground comically with little Kessies circling his head.
We're sending out a major love
And this is our message to you (message to you!)
Gabriel tries to teach Randall how to do a few dance moves, but the monster has four left feet and trips over himself trying to copy the raven.
The planets are lining up
We're bringing brighter days
They're all in line waiting for you
Can't you see?
You're just another part of me
Gabriel and Figment to an elaborate dance routine together while wearing sparkling suits and fedoras. "Uh, what's this?" Randall questioned.
"It's the dance break. You need to have a fun dance break for this kind of montage," Gabriel explained while doing the moonwalk.
"No, I mean why are you both dressed up like that?" Randall clarified.
"We just wanted to pay tribute to the King of Pop," Figment replied, doing a spin before doing Michael Jackson's famous anti-gravity lean move.
"…and that's relevant how?" Randall sighed.
"Michael Jackson had a whole show attraction in the Disney Parks, and George Lucas even worked on the film," Gabriel explained. He then looked at the readers and winked. "It's true! Just look up "Captain EO" in your free time."
Out from a nation
I feel the truth
The final message we'll bring to you
Getting back to the montage, we see the classroom setting again as the goodness lessons continue. Randall manages to get one of the questions right, which Gabriel and Kessie praise him for.
There is no danger to feel the truth
So come again
We need you
Randall uses his wall sticking skills to climb up and get a ball for some kids, and then uses his camo ability to hide and scare the Beagle Boys who had just stolen a woman's purse. Randall returns the purse… only to get whacked on the head again as it was the same lady who's child he accidentally scared earlier. Gabriel gives a sympathetic shrug.
We're sending out a major love
And this is our message to you (message to you!)
Kessie also joins in the Michael Jackson tribute with her own suit and hat, doing the dance moves with Gabriel and Figment. The dragon grabs Randall by the arm and spins him so fast that it creates a tornado. Once he stops spinning, Randall is in his own sparkle suit, giving sigh before following the others in the dance, now moving a lot better than before.
The planets are lining up
We're bringing brighter days
They're all in line waiting for you
So know the truth
You're just another part of me!
As the song cuts off, Gabriel points in front of him and shouts "Ooo!" before posing like the King of Pop. "Well, that was a lot of fun. So, how did your first taste and goodness feel, Randall?"
"Well… it wasn't terrible," Randall replied.
"That's good! Slow and steady wins the race!" Kessie said.
"Just don't go expecting me to forgive Sullivan or anything," Randall said. "I'm still a Scarer at heart, so you won't catch me working in their Laugh Floor."
"And we aren't expecting you to change either," Gabriel said. "In fact, I think it's kinda lame whenever a villain reforms and immediately drops what made them unique. Prince Zuko in "Avatar: The Laster Airbender" didn't lose his personality whenever he became good. And Venom still does his own thing as an anti-hero rather than being strictly a goody-two-shoes. I think you can find a way to turn your ability to scare people into a force for good, Randall."
"And you can always just pull harmless pranks too if you want," Figment added.
"I guess I'll try my best…" Randall shrugged.
Gabriel looked at his monster friend and gave a hum. "You know, I think there is one more thing we can do that can help you feel like you're on a new path in life. Here, let's head over to the France Pavilion. I have a friend that can help with your image…"
Soon the quartet were at Almyra's boutique, where the peahen gladly took up Gabriel's offer to make Randall an outfit to symbolize his new outlook on life. In a whirlwind of threads Almyra made the clothing, with the monster now outfitted in a dark purple varsity jacket with cyan sleeves and highlights, with his name and the number "44" emblazoned on the back.
"And now for the finishing touch," Almyra said, pulling out a pair of sleek eyeglasses.
"Glasses? I don't need those," Randall shook his head.
"Oh yes you do!" Kessie said. "You're always squinting like you need glasses. That can't be good for your health."
"And did you ever think that your plans might have worked out better if you could see with your full vision?" Gabriel said.
"But I can't turn clothes invisible," Randall pointed out.
"Just try them on. Trust us," Figment insisted.
Randall sighed, putting on the glasses. "Oh, you look so much more dignified with those on. And it highlights your eyes instead of you squinting all the time," Almyra praised. "Now then, try going invisible for me."
"Okay, but it's not going to do anything," Randall said. He turned invisible, and to his surprise his clothes did the same as well! "What the-?"
"Surprise! I used some special materials from Eda Mode so your clothes can change with your scales!" Almyra revealed.
"Now you can see better and still do your Scarer thing," Gabriel said with a smile.
Randall turned visible and rubbed the back of his head. "Geez, and you guys did all of this for me… even wasted an entire day on me. Now I wish I had friends that supported me like this back in college."
"This is a new start for you, Randall," Kessie said, landing in his head and smiling.
"You know, I was still wondering why you were being so nice to Kessie," Gabriel said. "I mean, she is one of the sweetest people I know, but what made you want to keep making her treats?"
"…She reminds me of my nephew, Rex," Randall admitted. "A sweet kid, though I think he might be in the Wasteland as one of the forgotten characters by now. I scared because it was my job and I wanted to be the best, and Rex looked up to me as his uncle… but I can't do either now with me being banished from Monstropolis."
"Aw, I think you're pretty cool too, Randy," Kessie giggled.
"H-Hey, don't call me that…" Randall said, blushing a bit.
"You have so many other cool talents we saw during our time as team, I'm sure you'll find something else to spark your imagination on," Figment assured him.
"And Team Dream Keeper will be there to help you along the way," Gabriel nodded. He put out his hand. "Purple Dragons forever!"
"Purple Dragons forever!" Figment cheered.
Randall rolled his eyes but put his hand in as well. "Yeah… Purple Dragons forever!"
Author's Note
Randall's on the road to redemption, all thanks to opening his heart to Kessie! Kessie really is a sweetheart that I think anyone would have a hard time being mean too. And Randall, while not one of the nicest guys ever, is a villain I've always felt some pity for, especially after Monsters University and we saw his backstory. Gabriel and Figment are willing to give him a chance, and now our favorite monster gets to join Poe in the 'Reformed Villains' club!
Randall's new outfit is based on his varsity jacket from Monsters University but colored like his racing suit from the game "Disney Speedstorm", which is also where the number 44 comes from. Randall also gets a new pair of glasses that let him see better, while also symbolizing him "opening his eyes" to new possibilities at being a better person. Also yes, Randall's nephew Rex is a real character from one of the Monsters Inc storybooks. We're getting some deep cuts this chapter!
The song for the montage is "Another Part of Me" by Michael Jackson, which was featured on the "Captain EO" attraction that used to be at Disney. I've wanted to use an MJ track for a while, and this was a good time to bring the King of Pop in!
Next Time: Gabriel and Jasiri go on a double date with Brooklyn and Lena! Where do you think they should take their romantic night out?
