The Voice Inside My Head

By Morgan Jenson

Previously…

Keeping my eye on the viewfinder, I reach around and remove the lens cap.

When I see someone move into the frame and wave at me, I yell out, "Oh shit, you scared the crap out of me!" and quickly back away from the camera.

"Sorry I scared you." I hear. "I figured you would have heard me enter the room."

"It's you." I say when I catch my breath.

"I guess I could say the same thing. It's you, the girl from the game, on the screen."

"And you're Edward Cullen."

Bella POV

I can't believe he's here, in front of me, and I'm not at the stadium. I cross my arms in front of my chest, which draws his attention, and lightly pinch my arm hoping he doesn't notice. Nope, not another dream.

"Sorry again for startling you. I was waiting for my teammates to be ready for the shoot, but they were taking too long. I figured I'd go on ahead to the studio without them."

He pauses as he raises his hand to his hair, but stops. I hear him mumble something under his breath and he lets out a small sound of disgust.

"I'm sorry, what was that?" I hear myself ask.

"Nothing, I just hate these photo shoots. They put all of these different products in my hair and I can't touch it, or run my fingers through it."

Before I can stop myself, I let out a chuckle. He looks so serious and seems so put out by the fact he can't touch his hair.

"Sorry, I'm not laughing at you. You just had this look on your face as if someone took away your favorite toy."

He smiles at my comment and moves toward the refreshment table. "May I? He asks, pointing at the water bottles.

"Sure, that's what they're there for."

I watch him pick up a bottle and see his forearm muscles move when he opens it. Once he removes the cap he takes a large drink from it and I watch with rapt fascination as his Adam's apple moves up and down. He's just so…

"So, you work here?"

"Oh, um no. I'm actually just interning here for the summer."

He looks like he's debating on what to say. Just when I think he won't say anything, he continues.

"I have to know something…"

He stops and swallows. His freaking Adam's apple bobbing up and down again. I didn't even know I had a thing for Adam's apples, but his is…

I didn't realize I had followed after him towards the refreshment table. His eyes, this close to him, are so green, with flecks of gold throughout, they're hypnotizing.

"The day you were at the game. Did you…" He stops…again!

"Did I?"

"Did you feel…"

"I'm sorry that took so long!" Jake interrupts, while pushing the new backdrop into the studio.

I step away from Edward and grab a water bottle for myself, as my mouth is suddenly extraordinarily dry. I drink about half the bottle before I close it and look towards Edward again, only he's not there anymore. I look around the studio and to the back door, just in time to see him stop right outside door. He turns his head and looks at me, with what I think is disappointment, and then he's gone.

After Jake came into the studio with the new backdrop, I helped him to set it up. From there, the lights were turned on with only a couple being repositioned. As Jake was taking some test shots, Edward and his teammates came in. They all looked like professional models, not the pro baseball players they were.

Edward and his teammates were nothing but professional once the shoot began. I helped Jake with whatever he needed, but being here, so close to him, was getting harder. I couldn't keep my eyes off of him. I felt like I needed to leave, to cool off. I wish I could say it was the lights that made me hot, but they weren't, it was him.

When I wasn't looking at him, I swear I could feel his eyes on me. It was the sweetest form torture, like a current or magnet. Would I ever see him again, get to speak to him?

"Bella", I hear Tanya say as she enters the studio.

"Yes, Tanya?" I ask as I move closer to her, so I don't disrupt the shoot.

"The design team that's working on the airline logo update is about to begin. I thought you might like to join them."

I nod my head, "Sure, that would be great."

Following her out of the room, I look back toward the shoot. I see the same disappointed look on his face, the same one he had when he left earlier. It's the same look I'm sure he can see on mine.

At the end of the day, on my way down the stairs, I see Tanya and Jake talking in the lobby. The conversation must be serious, as the look on Tanya's face is all business. Then I see Jake hand something to her as I step into the lobby and Tanya looks my way. I'm about to walk by when Tanya waves me toward them.

"Did something happen, is something wrong?"

"Bella, no." Tanya says, as she puts her hand on my arm, with nothing but kindness in her voice and on her face.

"I'm sorry if I gave you the wrong impression. You haven't done anything wrong. This is just one of those times, a perk of the job, if you will."

Holding the envelope out towards me she continues. "Jake said one of the players from his shoot asked him to give these to you."

I take the envelope from her with confusion and open it. I gasp when I see two Braves tickets and a VIP passes inside for this weekend. Maybe I will get to see him after all!

"Um, I don't know what to say, I…" I stutter, unsure of how to respond. They've got to be from him

"Again, sorry for giving you the impression you had done something wrong. Although this is technically a minor thing, it is still serious. Company policy states we cannot accept any gifts, no matter the size or cost."

And with that one statement… I'm crushed.

Edward POV

Playing for the Braves has been the experience of a lifetime. We almost made it to the playoffs last year and this year we've been in first place for the NL East all season.

I'm running out to the field with the rest of my teammates and the energy is charged. For them, it's due to the record season we've been having, mine is because I'll get to see her.

My coach had given me two tickets and VIP passes to give to the creative director, Tanya Denali at Twilight Graphics. When I saw her there I just had to make sure she'd get them and not Ms. Denali.

I can't explain this pull I feel towards her. When I saw her last year, when we saw each other, I just knew. I didn't think I'd ever see her again, but there she was, in the studio. I've never been one to believe in fate, but again, I just know, she's it for me. Fuck, I don't even know her name! That I'll have to remedy today, I think to myself.

I make it to the field and look at the VIP section, but she's not there. We have about 30 minutes until game time so there's still time. I warm up with the team and then we all head to the dugout before the national anthem begins.

They just called Ben's name so I know I'm next. This is it, I'll get to see her.

"Number 15, first baseman, Edward Cullen"

I jog onto the field and bump my fist with Ben and turn to face the seats. This is it, it's time. I look in the VIP section, and my smile falls, she's not here. She didn't come, and just like that, I'm crushed. I guess it wasn't fate after all.

Bella POV

I'm watching the Braves game on TV and it's like a car wreck, I can't stop looking. They've been having an amazing season so far, but you wouldn't know it with the way this game has gone. The game I was supposed to go to.

Cullen looks so defeated, but he's looked that way since I started watching during the third inning. Even the commentators have been saying he's off his game today. Wishful thinking on my part that it's because I'm not there, but surely that can't be it. All players have off days, right?
