Episode 103: Machoke, Machoke Man

Last time, Mew and her friends are traveling on the ferry with their new friend, Janina to Cianwood City. Janina is going to get the special medicine for Jasmine's Ampharos, Sparkle. Mew and her friends are heading to the Cianwood Gym so Mew can compete for her next badge. Soon enough, they arrive at the Pharmacist to retrieve the medicine.

The Pharmacist hands over the medicine, "Thank you for waiting. Here's the medicine you ordered."

"Thank you very much, sir," Janina says, taking the medicine.

"Well, that's a big relief," Misty says.

"And now Sparkle Ampharos can get better," Molly happily says.

"You'd better bring it back to Jasmine right away," Brock says.

The Pharmacist then says, "If you leave now, you can catch the express ferry. That goes straight to Olivine City. It'll have you there before nightfall."

"Have a safe trip, Janina," Misty says.

Togepi chirps while Sparkle the Pokachu gives her regards.

"Give my love to Jasmine," Brock says.

"We'll head back to Olivine City as soon as I win my badge here," Mew says.

"Okay, good luck to you, Mew," Janina says.

"Good luck to you, too," Mew says.

"Pika Pikachu," (Good luck, Janina.) Pikachu says.

"Eevee Eevee," (We'll see you again soon.) Eevee says.

Later the express ferry drives off to the sea as Mew and her friends wave goodbye to Janina.

"Alright, let's go find that gym," Mew says.

"Eevee," (Battle the Gym Leader!) Eevee says.

And Pikachu says, "Pika Pika!" (And win that badge!)

Suddenly, they begin to hear grunting noises that catch their attention. They turn to their left to see a man wearing white pants and a black belt, training alongside his Machoke in an intense sparring match. The man also has slightly spiky brown hair. Mew and the others watch to see the match between them.

The man says, "You defended yourself well, Machoke. Now let's try switching to offense!"

Machoke agrees and goes on the offensive as the gang watches.

"Come on! Is that all you got?" The man says.

"Wow. that man and his Machoke are really going at it," Tomo says.

"I wonder who they are," Jen says.

Soon, the Machoke strikes its trainer with a Karate Chop.

"That was a nice Karate Chop. Alright, now let's see you try a Submission attack!" The man says.

"Machoke, ma!" (Sure thing, man!) The Machoke says.

Machoke proceeds to have its trainer's head between its ankles, almost like it was setting up for a hurricanrana, before amazing the making both it and its trainer roll forward like a wheel or tank tread before tossing the man, prompting the gang to check on him.

"That was perfect!" The man says.

Suddenly, Pikachu calls out, "Pika Pika!" (Hey there, mister!)

"Are you okay, sir?" Mew asks.

"Eevee Eevee," (That must have really hurt.) EEvee says.

"What are you thinking, battling against a Machoke like that?" Misty asks.

"Taking a Submission attack without any protection really isn't safe," Brock says.

"I'm just…" The man says before bursting into tears, "I'm just so proud of that Machoke! That Submission attack was absolutely perfect! You hear me?"

"choke." (Yeah.) Machoke says.

Perfect!" The man says.

Both trainer and Pokemon tearfully embrace.

The man continues, "Machoke. I'm so pleased with your progress. You've come a long way, Machoke."

He then notices Mew, "Hey, squirt. You with the Pikachu and Eevee?"

"Me?" Mew questions.

"What's your name, kid?" The man asks.

"My name's Mew," Mew says.

"Mew, huh?" The man says, "What brings you to town, sport?"

"It's Mew," Mew clarifies, "And I'm actually here to…

But the man says, "Don't tell me, let me guess. You're a Pokemon trainer, right? You wouldn't happen to be looking for the Cianwood City gym, would you?"

"Yes, I am!" Mew answers.

Then the man says, "Alright, let's go! March! Double time! Hut, two, three, four! Hut, two, three, four!

"Machoke, ma!" (Hut, two, three!) Machoke repeats.

The man then says, "If you three want to battle here in Cianwood City, start marching! Get those knees in the air!"

Mew, Pikachu, and Eevee decide to do so.

"Alright, let's move it out!" The man says.

Soon, Mew and the others follow the man and Machoke.

"I don't know about this," Misty replies.

Molly giggles, "It's kind of fun."

"This feels silly if you ask me," Jen says.

Soon enough, Machoke is the first to arrive at a Japanese style building, and is waiting for the others at the entrance.

Mew calls out, "Hey, Machoke, wait for us!"

They finally reach the entrance.

Mew sighs, "That was tiring.

"I can't go on," Jen says.

"Neither can I," Misty says.

Soon, Chuck shows up, equally wiped out, "Hut, two, three, four! What's the matter? You kids out of shape or somethin'?"

"Yeah, that's right. We're the ones who are out of shape," Misty says.

"Are you gonna be okay, pal?" Brock asks.

How much further are you gonna be taking us?" Mew adds.

"We're here. This is it," The man says and points to the building.

Everyone looks to see the multiple karate students and their Pokemon come out.

Then they greet the man, "Welcome back, master!"

"Master?" Everyone replies confused.

"Students, did you finish all your training?" The man asks.

And the Students answer, "Yes!"

Soon, Mew realizes, "Wait, if you're their master, then you must be…"

"The Cianwood Gym Leader," The man says, "I'm the meanest, leanest, toughest, roughest, fightin' Pokémon master in all the land. But you can call me Chuck."

Mew smiles, "Um, nice to meet you Chuck."

Soon, everyone is sitting down for lunch.

"And now we EAT! EAT! EAT! So we can all be strong fighting machines!" Chuck says.

Then everyone is served big portions of food, and everyone starts chowing down.

"Well, I don't know about the fighting machine part, but you don't have to tell me twice when it comes to food," Mew says.

"That's right! Eat," Chuck says with his mouth full, Then chew, and eat some more, and chew some more, and eat! You need lots of nourishment to keep your strength up!"

Soon, a young woman with hazel brown hair wearing a yellow shirt, a blue skirt, and an apron walked in. The woman is Chuck's wife.

She walks over with a plate of food and asks, "So, you're here to battle for a Storm Badge?"

"Uh, yeah," Mew answers.

"Well, you shouldn't have any trouble beating that flabby, old husband of mine," Chuck's wife says.

"Oh, uh," Mew says.

Chuck takes offense to the comment, "Hey! Who're you calling 'flabby'?"

His wife giggles,I have plenty more in the kitchen if anybody wants a second helping.

Meanwhile, Team Rocket are wandering down the streets, tired and hungry.

"I'm exhausted. I can't believe we crossed that entire bay clinging for dear life onto that anchor just inches above the water," Jessie says.

"Yeah, and no seafood," James says.

"No eat food either. I ain't eaten nuttin in days!" Meowth says.

"Wobbuffet!" (None of us!) Wobbuffet agrees.

"That's enough out of you," Jessie says and recalls Wobbuffet to his Pokeball..

Meowth lets out a sigh of depression.

But then, he catches a scent, "Hold on a second! I tink I smell food!"

James and Jessie soon get the scent, too.

"Is it seafood?" James asks.

"It's some kind of food, James," James says.

The three follow the scent.

Meanwhile, at the gym, everyone had finished eating)

"Oh, man. I'm stuffed," Mew says.

"Pika." (Me, too.) Piakchu says.

"Eevee," (Me three.) Eevee says.

Yeah, that was delicious. Right, Togepi? Sparkle?" Misty says.

Togepi and Sparkle agree.

"And so much more," Brock says.

"What do you mean, Brock?" Tomo asks.

"It wasn't just a meal, it's called Pokemon Power Food, a nutritious meal designed to strengthen trainers and Pokemon alike. Everything the students do at this gym is about their training," Brock says.

"They sure seem very dedicated," Misty says.

Just then, Chuck says, "Alright! Time to burn off those calories! Whaddaya say, are you ready for that battle now, Mew?"

Soon enough, everyone arrives on the battlefield and the competitors are ready to battle.

The referee announces, "This is an official battle for a Storm badge between Cianwood City gym leader, Chuck, and Mew from Pallet Town! You each use two Pokemon! Are you both ready?!"

"I'm ready! And I'm going to be using my Machoke and my Poliwrath!" Chuck says, and calls out Poliwrath.

Chuck calls out, "Are you ready, Poliwrath?"

Poliwrath answers, "Poliwrath!" (I'm ready!)

"I don't know. That Poliwrath looks pretty powerful," Misty says.

"Poliwrath is part fighting type and part water type, Mew," Brock says. "What do you think you're gonna do?"

"Water types are weak against electricity, and also weak against psychic, fairy, and flying," Mew says, and thinks of it.

Mew has an idea and says, "Ready, Pikachu?"

"Pika Pika!" (I sure am!) Pikachu says, and jumps into the battlefield.

"Begin the match!" The referee says.

Chuck says, "Alright! Let's go, Poliwrath!"

"Pikachu, Thunderbolt attack!" Mew calls out.

Pikachu charges the attack.

Then Chuck says, "Poliwrath, dodge it!"

Poliwrath dodges the attack.

"You gotta stop it from moving, hit it with a string of Thunderbolt!" Mew calls out.

Pikachu fires the multiple electric attack, and manages to shock Poliwrath.

Mew calls out, "Now Pikachu, Quick Attack!"

Pikachu uses Quick Attack.

"Poliwrath, focus your energy!" Chuck says.

Pikachu darts in and out of visibility and hits Poliwrath, but the attack doesn't seem to have any effect as Pikachu rebounds right off.

"Oh no!" Mew says, shocked.

Pikachu soon lands.

"Pikachu!" Mew calls out.

"Now, Poliwrath, Double Slap attack!" Chuck calls out.

Poliwrath begins slapping Pikachu silly.

"That was a lot of direct hits!" Misty says.

"Poliwrath just has a lot more strength physically than Pikachu does!

"Pikachu, come on! You can do it!" Mew says.

Pikachu tries to get up, but doesn't.

"Pikachu," Mew says, shocked.

The referee announces, "Pikachu is unable to battle! Poliwrath wins the match!"

Soon, Chuck starts crying, "Even tough guys cry."

"You did a good job, Pikachu," Mew says and picks up Pikachu.

"Pika." (Thanks, pal.) Pikachu says.

You deserve a little rest," Mew says.

Meanwhile, Team Rocket reaches the Cianwood Gym and sees an open door.

"We're so close," Jessie says.

"So close, I can almost taste it," James says.

"What are we waiting for?" Meowth says, excited.

Team Rocket rushes for the doorway.

"Somebody sure can cook!" James comments.

But Jessie says, "Let's not forget, ladies first!"

"Let's not forget who smelt it foist!" Meowth says.

They soon invite themselves in and are in front of the table.

Let's eat!" The three happily say.

The three soon begin eating the leftovers of Chuck's lunch.

"Yummy!" The three reply with smiles on their faces.

"Wonderful flavor. And a subtle aftertaste. This food is…" James says as he eats more food, "first rate."

"It sure was nice of someone to prepare this tasty meal for us. We wouldn't want to waste any!" Jessie says as she eats more food.

As they shovel the food into their mouths, Wobbuffet bursts from his Pokéball and lifts the pot up to his mouth and starts gulping down food, not sharing it with the other Team Rocket members as they try to stop him.

"What do you think you're doing?!" James shouts.

"This ain't no Wobb-buffet!" Meowth scolds.

"Wobbuffet! (I'm starving!) Wobbuffet says.

Meanwhile, the next round of Mew's battle is about to begin.

Mew is trying to think of a plan, "I can only use one more Pokemon. The only Pokemon who would be strong enough against Poliwrath is my grass type, but if I use Bayleef now, that Machoke will be tough to beat later."

"Mew looks a little confused," Misty says.

"She's only got one choice, she has to beat Poliwrath," Brock says.

"What she's going to do?" Molly asks.

"I'm not sure," Jen says.

"Still Mew needs to think of something. That Poliwrath's tough," Tomo says.

Mew then throws her Pokeball and calls out, "Bayleef, I choose you!"

"Huh? Bayleef?" Misty replies, confused.

Brock then says, "Bayleef's a grass type, so it's strong against water Pokemon. Mew has to concentrate on beating Poliwrath or this match is over."

"I hope Bayleef can go the distance with Poliwrath, and still have enough strength left over to battle Machoke," Mew says.

Chuck laughs, "I like the way you think, Mew! You're a real strong competitor! Poliwrath, Water Gun attack!"

Poliwrath fires the attack.

Mew calls out, "Dodge it, Bayleef!"

Bayleef does so.

"Good, now Razor Leaf!" Mew calls out.

Bayleef launches the attack and takes its toll on Poliwrath)

"Bayleef, Vine Whip attack!" Mew calls out.

Bayleef hoists Poliwrath up.

"Oh no!" Chuck says, shocked.

Mew calls out, "Way to go! Hold on tight!"

Bayleef brings Poliwrath down hard.

Then Chuck calls out, "Focus your energy! Focus, Poliwrath!"

Poliwrath struggles to its feet.

Then Mew calls out, "Bayleef, Body Slam!"

Bayleef leaps.

"Poliwrath, look out, now!" Chuck calls out.

Poliwrath looks up, but it's too little too late as Bayleef crashes down on top of Poliwrath, knocking it out of the match

The regress announces, "Poliwrath is unable to battle! Mew's Bayleef wins the match!"

"Alright! We did it, Bayleef!" Mew cheers.

"Mew's strategy has really paid off so far," Misty says.

"Yeah, and it didn't hurt that Pikachu had already worn Poliwrath down in the last battle," Brock says.

Chuck says in tears, "I'm so proud of you, Poliwrath. I'll never forget the battle you gave me, and now for a well-deserved rest," and calls it back to his Pokeball.

Then Chuck turns to his Machoke, "Alright, Machoke, the time has come."

Mew and Bayleef look in confusion.

Then Chuck says, "Machoke, Karate Chop attack!"

Machoke closes in and, surprisingly, attacks Chuck instead. Mew and the others are dumbfounded.

"Huh?" Jen and Molly reply, confused.

"What's going on?" " Misty asks.

"What is he doing?" Tomo wonders.

"Chuck is getting his Machoke psyched up for the battle, it also helps the trainer to stay focused," Brock says.

Chuck calls out, "Come on! Focus your energy! Focus on winning! It's all about the focus, Machoke!"

Mew calls out, "Hey Bayleef, you wanna give this a try!"

Bayleef turns to Mew and nods.

"Alright then!" Mew says, "Gimme a Body Slam!"

Bayleef rears up and places its front feet on Mew, trying to push him down

"That's right, Bayleef. Stay focused," Mew says.

Bayleef agrees.

Back in the dining hall, Team Rocket had finished eating the leftovers.

Jessie happily says, "I'm so fully satisfied!"

"I'm so full, I don't think I can move," James says.

"I don't wanna move, I'm starting to cozy up to dis place," Meowth says, feeling relaxed.

"Wobbuffet." (So am I.) Wobbuffet says.

Soon, Chuck's wife walks in to notice them, "Excuse me. Can I help you?"

And with that, Team Rocket begins their motto.

Jessie:

Well, you can start by preparing for trouble.

James:

Then you might consider making it double.

Then all three stand up.

Jessie:

To protect the world from devastation.

James:

To unite all peoples within our nation.

Jessie:

To denounce the evils of truth and love.

James:

To extend our reach to the stars above.

Jessie:

Jessie.

James:

James.

Jessie:

Team Rocket, blast off at the speed of light.

But Chuck's wife interrupts them, "Oh, I get it. You must be new students here to see my husband. You're just in time to help with the afternoon chores." And hands some dishes to Team Rocket, "Here you go."

Team Rocket are dumbfounded.

"I don't think you understand, miss," James says.

But Chuck's wife says, "When you finish the dishes, you can do the laundry. Then you can scrub the floors and make the beds."

"Why should we do all your doity woik, lady?" Meowth asks.

"Why, it'll help you work up an appetite for an afternoon snack," The wife answers.

"Afternoon snack?" Team Rocket questions with glee.

"Today we're serving steamed dumplings," The wife says and walks away.

"Dumplings?" Team Rocket asks, amazed.

Soon, Team Rocket begins running around and gets excited.

"Suddenly I'm hungry again!" Jessie says.

"Me, too, Jess!" James says.

"Meowth!" Meowth says.

"Wobbu!" (Me, three!) Wobbuffet says.

Back at the battlefield, the final round is about to begin.

The referee says, "Ready? Begin!"

"Alright, Machoke, focus!" Chuck calls out.

"Okay, let's do it, Bayleef!" Mew calls out.

"Focus your energy, Machoke!" Chuck calls out.

"Machoke ma!" (No prob, Chuck!) Machoke says.

You, too, Bayleef! Focus!" Mew calls out.

Machoke tries to strike, but Bayleef narrowly avoids each one.

"Bayleef isn't getting off to a very good start," Misty says.

"You're right. Machoke still hasn't used Submission, and that's its strongest attack," Brock says.

Machoke finally lands a blow, knocking Bayleef down.

"Bayleef!" Mew calls out.

Bayleef manages to get up.

Chuck calls out, "Don't back off, Machoke! Give it a Cross Chop attack!

Machoke charges in for the attack.

But Mew calls out, "Bayleef, Vine Whip attack!"

Bayleef launches the attack and manages to wrap its vines around Machoke's right arm.

"That's it, pull it in! Make this a face to face battle!" Mew calls out.

Bayleef attempts to do so.

"Reel it in, Machoke! Make Bayleef come to you! Focus your energy!" Chuck calls out.

Machoke then starts pulling the vines, like a tug-of-war.

"You focus, too, Bayleef! Pull Machoke to you!" Mew calls out

Bayleef starts pulling harder.

"Dig in, Machoke!" Chuck shouts.

Machoke starts pulling harder, too.

"Hold your ground, Bayleef!" Mew calls out.

"Pika Pika!" (Keep on pulling!) Pikachu calls out.

"Eevee Eevee!" (You can do it, Bayleef!) Eevee calls out.

Just then, Brock says, "Put some slack in your Vine Whip! It just might make Machoke lose its footing and fall down!"

"It's gonna take more than strength to win this. You're going to have to use a little strategy, too," Misty says.

"I know, I'm trying to figure out what to do from this," Mew says.

And Mew calls out, "Hang in there! You can do it, Bayleef!

Bayleef starts sliding towards Machoke until she's pulled into the center of the battlefield.

"Bayleef!" Mew calls out.

"Alright, Machoke! It's Submission attack time!" Chuck calls out.

Machoke does the move, sending it and Bayleef into a tank tread spin before releasing her high into the air

Everyone cries out, "Bayleef!"

Then Mew calls out, "This battle isn't over yet, as long as Bayleef stays focused."

Bayleef opens her eyes.

Then Mew calls out, "Vine Whip attack!

Bayleef recovers in mid-air and wraps her vines around Machoke before landing and taking Machoke up and slamming it down hard.

"Machoke, no!" Chuck cries out.

Then Mew calls out, "Now, Body Slam it!"

The attack lands.

"Nice one, Bayleef," Mew says.

Machoke barely manages to get up.

Then Mew calls out, "Finish it off with a Razor Leaf attack!"

Bayleef then performs the next attack and Machoke goes down.

Chuck calls out, "You can do it, Machoke! Focus your energy, now!"

Machoke tries to get back up, but can't and unable to battle

"Machoke!" Chuck calls out.

With the results in, the referee announces, "Machoke is unable to battle! The match goes to Bayleef! The winner is Mew!"

Mew happily cheers, "Alright! We did it!"

Bayleef nuzzles her trainer. Tomo, Jen, Molly, and the Pokemon cheer.

"Bayleef was unbelievable!" Misty says.

"Yeah, that was a great battle!" Brock says.

"You knew just was I was thinking, didn't you, Bayleef? You really stayed focused," Mew says

Bayleef tries Body Slamming Mew

Everyone questions, "Mew?"

"That was great! That Body Slam was the best!" Mew says and laughs a little.

Chuck kneels to his Pokemon, "Are you okay, Machoke?"

"Machoke," (I'm fine.) Machoke says.

Chuck happily says, ""I'm proud of you, Machoke. You put in a good battle today. You're a champion in my book, win or lose."

Then Chuck approaches Mew and Bayleef, "Mew. You fought a great head-to-head battle out there. I haven't had one like that in a long time. It's no disgrace to lose to a trainer like you."

"Thanks, Chuck," Mew says.

"I enjoyed seeing you and Bayleef work together. Bayleef really knew your strategy. Sometimes working closely together is the only strategy you need. I hope you can work that closely with all your Pokemon. If you do, I don't think you'll have anything to worry about when you get to the Johto League," Chuck says, and presents the badge to Mew, "Now, take this Storm badge. You certainly deserve it. Congratulations, Mew."

In the palm of Chuck's hand is the Storm badge. It is shaped like a fist, and it's a bit of a bronze color.

Mew takes the badge and says, "Thanks Chuck."

Mew then shows it to Pikachu, Eevee, and Bayleef.

"Look guys, we won a Storm Badge!" Mew says.

"Bay Bay! ("Alright!") Bayleef cheers.

"Pi Pikachu!" (Badge number five!) Pikachu says.

Alright, Pikachu! Yay, Bayleef! We did it!" Mew cheers.

Later that night, Mew contacts Janina over the videophone.

"She still can't battle, huh?" Mew asks.

"Well, thanks to the medicine, Sparkle is doing much better. But I'm afraid it's going to take a little more time before Jasmine feels up to battling again," Janina says.

"I understand," Mew says, "Oh well. I guess Jasmine and I will have to battle some other time."

"I'm sorry, Mew," Janina says.

"That's okay, Janina," Mew says, "We'll check back with you and Jasmine later."

"Okay. Talk to you then," Janina says.

"You too. Goodnight," Mew hangs up the phone.

Chuck's wife says, "That's too bad, Mew. I guess your battle's been delayed for a while, huh?"

"Unfortunately," Mew says.

"Hey, why don't you and your friends stay here for a short while. There is a Safari Zone where you can go to where you can catch different Pokemon," Chuck says.

"Really? There's a Safari Park there?" Jen asks.

"Of course. There are plenty of Pokemon there," Chuck's wife says.

"And then you all can check out the Whirl Islands, Mew?" Chuck says.

"What are the Whirl Islands?" Tomo asks.

"Oh, they're a group of islands between here and Olivine City," Chuck's Wife says.

"The Whirl Islands have been the source of many myths and legends over the years. Some say there are even mysterious Pokemon there," Chuck says.

"Mysterious, huh?" Mew replies.

"Sounds like an interesting place, doesn't it?" Misty replies.

"Yeah. We should go check it out," Brock says.

"Then that settles it! We'll stay here for a couple of days so we can check out the Safari Park. And then we'll heading to the Whirl Islands!" Mew says.

Then Chuck's wife gives Mew a card, "Here, this card will pay for your passage on the ferry. A gift from us for a great battle."

"Oh, thanks," Mew says, taking the card.

"I mean, after all, you must've done something right to beat my husband. Even if he is getting a little flabby," Chuck's mother says.

"You may be right. Hey, that reminds me, I better start training!" Chuck says, and Machoke shows up behind him "Lots of luck in the Whirl Islands, Mew. Train hard, eat well, keep your eyes on the prize. And remember, it's all about the focus."

"You said it, Chuck," Mew says.

Meanwhile, Team Rocket is seen sitting outside the dining hall looking at the moon.

"What a day. Steamed dumplings, steaming hot bath, followed by a fabulous dinner and refreshing popsicle! Not to mention a nice, warm bed to sleep in," Jessie happily says.

James sighs, "Ahh. The simple pleasures in life."

"Yeeeah. Sure is nice to be simple, huh, guys?" Meowth replies.

"WOBBB-UFFET!" (Wonderful!) Wobbuffet agrees.

"SIMPLY A BLAST!" Team Rocket says.
