John Sheppard wasn't just frustrated anymore, he was pissed. He'd found what he'd missed. A camera. Who knew how many of them there were. No wonder these people, whoever they were, could afford to be methodical. This wasn't just hunting. They were studying. Learning. But what, specifically, were they looking for? He knocked the little device out of the tree and crushed it under his boot. A small force field tried to block his way, but it gave under the pressure.
Rodney had finally gotten past the force field and into the system. He found that the signal was being broadcast over quite a distance. Maybe even into orbit. But he also found, no others connected to it. Which meant there were probably more. He hadn't learned much, but he had learned how to get past the force field and into the system. The next one would be easier and might have more information. He studied his tablet and found another signal. He headed for it.
Teyla had seen a glint and followed it. She had found a camera too. Was this some kind of game for these people?! Had they used these things to find the ones they'd killed and enjoyed it later? Had children died for their murderers amusement? Praying she was wrong, she crushed it beneath her boot.
Ronan too had figured out that there were cameras. McKay might think he was a barbarian, but the Satetan people had had technology. Not as advanced as the Earthers, but still, enough for him to recognize what it was. A way of cheating, just like the Wraith with their flying cameras.
The Pack members captives weren't talking. But every time one of them asked a question, they got a different scent from their captive. Which meant that they could understand them, they just weren't talking. After a few hours of endless, unanswered questions, each of them killed their captive. It might seem harsh, but the Pack weren't just humans, they were wolves as well, in addition to being demon hunters. You did not leave a known threat alive in your territory.
When the captain of the alien ship saw the six who captured the hunters tracking them kill them and do so with controlled emotions, he knew he had what they were looking for. Beings worthy of Challenge. Finally, after generations of mundane Hunts, someone worth testing themselves against. He immediately ordered all of them transported before the traveling device they'd found and blockaded. He and his Hunters beamed down to speak to the worthy ones.
As the Pack, AG 1 and Jesse materialized in front of the gate, they saw the aliens.
"There is a force field around the traveling device. I would speak with you."
"What about?" Sheppard asked.
"Not you. You are not worthy. They are." Pointing at the Pack and Jesse.
"Worthy of what?" Xander asked.
"Of Challenge. We have never encountered beings capable of what we have seen you doing. You, with the reading of animal minds. And him, with the reading of the trees. You six, each captured, interrogated and killed, the Hunters Hunting you. He, along with you six, also found and destroyed all of the monitoring devices, except for the cloaked one above us. Finally, we succeeded in drawing out beings truly worthy of Challenge."
"Drawing out? I wondered why you killed the children and babies. What challenge could they be to hunters? You did it on purpose. To draw someone stronger out."
"Yes. They were unworthy. The ones with insect minds, they were close. But they were uncontrolled. They kill because they enjoy it. You killed because it was necessary. Just like us."
"Killing of children is not necessary! We are nothing alike. We kill to protect. We do not enjoy it!" Xander said, angrily.
"Nor do we. We Hunt and we kill for the Challenge. To test ourselves against ones worthy."
"That's your logic? Your belief?" He was astonished that entire worlds died for that.
"Yes."
"And this Challenge? What does it entail?"
"You Challenge us. For the protection of this galaxy. If you win, we leave and never come back. If you lose, we will Hunt every living creature in this galaxy to death. They are unworthy. You should be aware, in more than a million years, we have only lost Challenge once."
"More than a million years? What are your people called?"
"We are the Teetanians."
"Interesting. I would warn you. Our people walk in three galaxies. When we win, you will agree to never trouble us in any of those galaxies."
"Agreed."
"Xander?" Sheppard asked. "What are you doing?"
"My job. One more question. Is the Challenge just between you and me?"
"No, you six and all of my Hunters."
"So you hope to overwhelm us."
"If you are truly worthy, you will win."
"Xander, the six of you can't win against all of them! There's more then fifty of them!" Sheppard exclaimed.
"For the record Sheppard, I agree with Han Solo. Never tell me the odds. I'm lousy at math. Jesse, take down the force field around the Stargate, if you please."
"With pleasure."
"Sheppard, what you and AG 1 are about to see, is Classified by the President of the United States, himself. If you ever discuss it with anyone outside the need to know, they will bury you so deep, the universe will forget you ever existed, understand me?"
"Yes."
