It was the next day in the courthouse, as the judge came out of this chambers, "all rise" said the guard as everyone rose
"You may sit" says the judge, as everyone sits down, "Mrs. Crabtree?"
Effie rise, "yes your honor?"
"Is the new evidence you have relevant to this case?"
"Yes your honor, I like to call on to the stand Detective Llewelyn Watts"
Watts rises and heads to the stand, as the guard approached and gave him the Bible to touch, "do you swear, to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help you God?"
"I do"
"You may sit" said the judge
Effie approached him, "Detective Watts, what evidence do you have that is important to this case?"
"About a month ago, when little Susannah was hurt, inspector Brackenreid ask me to look into Sister Helga's past"
"Go on"
"I found out some disturbing information about not just 1 Catholic school but 3 Catholic schools. In total 50 bodies of children no longer than 9 years old all buried on the school grounds."
The court gasp
"And what was the cause of their death?"
"Same as how Timothy died. Internal bleeding, bruising, broken bones"
"And where were these schools located, Vancouver, Winnipeg, and Nova Scotia."
"We're all these children orphaned?"
"None of them were. The parents were paid off to keep silent of what happened to their children"
Another gasp from the court
"And how do you know this?"
"Because I found one of the child's parents"
"And are they in this court room?"
"Yes, the lady in the blue hat behind Dr. Ogden. Her name is Mrs. Lydia Cross"
Effie looks at her "would you like to take the stand Mrs. Cross?"
Mrs. Cross stands up, "yes, I would"
"Detective Watts, you may step down. Mrs. Cross, you may take the stand" says the judge
Mrs. Cross take the stand and says "I do" on the Bible and sits down
Effie approaches her, "Mrs. Cross, what school did your child go to in was in Vancouver?"
"Nova Scotia. A small Catholic school, my daughter, she was only 7"
"Tell us what happened"
"It was her first time going to school, since her father wouldn't allow it. But after he died I decided to send her to get an education. It was within a few days, I noticed something strange in Lizzie, my daughter. She kept praying and reading the Bible constantly."
"Do you not pray or read the Bible in your home?"
"We do, but that's all she would read. Not her books her father left her. It was a week later, I noticed she didn't want to bathe, and always wore a sweater. One night I decided to check on her and I noticed bruises and marks on her legs, arms and back. She woke up and said I was a bag girl today and I had to repent my sins."
"How long did this go on for?"
"Not…long…cause it was 2 days later, Lizzie didn't come from school and so I went to find her. As I arrived…I saw Sister Helga and the Father burying her body in the ground and say she was a bad girl and deserved to be punished" as she began crying
Julia kept tearing up as William handed her a hanky.
Sister Helga stands up, "it's a lie!"
"Not a lie, you bitch. I have evidence!" As she goes through her purse and pulls out photographs, "I had my husband's camera with me and took photographs"
Effie, the judge and jury look at the photographs and were shocked to find it was the same father of Susannah's school.
The court room gasped again as the father left the room, as a guard ran out to get him.
"After I took photographs and they were gone, I dug her back up, took her home, gave her a small funeral and reburied her. But when I was digging her up, at the school, I saw 3 more bodies of children. No older than Lizzie, and yes I got the photographs to prove it."
As she got more out and gave them to Effie, the judge and jury.
Lydia stepped down from the stand, since Sister Helga was speechless and didn't know what to say.
Inspector went next, and explained how he found 3 couples who lost their children and were paid off to keep quiet. Followed by George, the same, and how he found 10 bodies of children at Susannah's school, that almost made him stumbled his words. Fiona and Timothy's father were the last. Fiona explained she was paid off but didn't take the money and had to witness children getting punished. Timothy's father explained he just wanted what was right for his son. They all called Sister Helga a monster and evil bitch in their words.
It was late afternoon and they finally called on the Father, who was dragged to the stand and handcuffed to it.
Effie approached him and asked him, "how long have you known the Sister?"
"Since we were teens"
"Are you in love with her?"
"Objection your honor" said Sister Helga
"Overruled. Continue Mrs. Crabtree"
"Thank you, your honor. Now as I was saying, are you in love with her?"
William and Julia look at the Sister, as they noticed she shakes her head, and gives him a stern look, "I…I" as he stutters and begins sweating
"Father? Please answer the question"
"Yes…yes I love her. I always have"
"Then why do you allow her do these horrible and not deserving punishments to children? And why do you help bury them?"
"I believe she is doing what is right. All these children are nothing but undeserving, mind-speaking brats. They believe they will grow up to be respectable and do something good with their life."
The court room starts shouting, "you pig! You monster! You deserve to go to hell!"
"Order! Order! Guard get this man out of my sight!"
As a guard pulled him away, he was laughing.
Sister Helga just clenched her cross in her hand.
Julia felt nauseous
All William could do is hold back, as all he wanted to do was kill him, as he clenched his wrist.
The judge ask Effie, "Mrs. Crabtree, you have another witness?"
Effie took a sip of her water and says, "no your honor, but would like to ask Sister Helga up to the stand again"
To be continued
