Naruto: Aftershock

My laptop computer broke down and most of my data was lost so I began searching for files on my old desktop and found notes to some of my old, defunct stories. I don't know if I'll be continuing things, but I had enough data for an additional installment. Here is chapter 5 of Naruto: Aftershock. Enjoy!

Last Time:
Misato commanded, "EVA Unit 01 -Launch!"
As the purple Unit 01 rocketed to the surface; Lieutenant Aoba exclaimed; "I'm getting a high energy reading within the target! The energy is accelerating on the target's periphery. It's starting to converge!"
"WHAT?!" asked Misato. "It can't be -A particle beam?!"
When EVA 01 reached the surface Katsuragi exclaimed, "No! Shinji, get out of the way!"
The particle beam fired and turned a building into molten slag before it plowed into Unit 01's chest plating. Shinji had no time to react and let out a horrific scream of agony that seemed to last eons to everyone in the Command Center.
Misato cried out, "Shinji!" before she ordered his recovery. "Get him back! Hurry!"
Shinji was still screaming when the Eva dropped back into the Earth and the beam finally ceased. The command crew stared in silence as the smoke and flames were displayed on the view screen. Shinji went silent as well.
"The target has gone inactive." reported Aoba.
"How is Shinji?!" asked Misato desperately.
Lieutenant Hyuga said, "His EEG is abnormal. Shinji's pulse is faint."
"Unit 01 is recovered in EVA Cage 7!" exclaimed Maya. "Unit 00 is ready for takeoff."
Captain Katsuragi ordered, "Abort the launch of Unit 00. Tell Rei to stand by. I'm going to Cage number 7." She turned to Doctor Akagi and said, "Ritsuko, get the medical team ready!" As Misato ran into the elevator, she realized that Sakura was already there waiting for her. The purple haired woman looked into Sakura's tear-filled eyes and simply nodded before the two of them took the elevator down to Cage number 7…Shinji was already on a stretcher being rushed to the Emergency Room when Sakura and Misato arrived…
While Shinji's life was on the line; the Angel silently lowered a massive drill into the ground. "What is the enemy doing?" asked Ritsuko in confusion.
Lieutenant Hyuga studied the monitor for a moment before he replied, "It's drilling into the Geofront towards NERV Headquarters…It's trying a direct attack against us…"

Chapter 5
NERY Headquarters, Tokyo-3, Japan, Infirmary
Shinji was unconscious but stable. He was dreaming of his lonely childhood as tears ran down his sleeping face. The 14-year-old woke up to the feeling of someone drying his tears. His blue eyes opened tiredly, and he saw Sakura's green eyes there. He croaked weakly, "Sakura-chan?"
Sakura leaned in and kissed him. "I'm glad you're awake Shinji-kun. I was worried I wouldn't be able to talk to you before I sortie in Unit 01."
"What happened?" asked the dark-haired boy.
The rosette replied, "You were in Unit 01 and were hit with a particle beam from the Angel." She cupped his cheek. "I thought I'd lost you."
After gathering her thoughts, Sakura continued. "Rei, Asuka, and I are going to destroy that angel tonight just after midnight. Misato requisitioned a positron rifle from the Japanese Self Defense Force somehow. Every ounce of power in Japan is going through that rifle. We're going to blow it away."
Shinji looked doubtful. "Will it work? I want you safe Sakura-chan."
She smiled. "Asuka-san has the rifle and Rei has a massive shield to protect us from the particle beam. I'm going to be the backup on the rifle, but it won't come to that." Her watch beeped. "It's time to go, I'll see you soon. I love you."
"I love you too Sakura-chan." replied Shinji tiredly. "Stay safe for me."

Mount Futago
Units 00, 01 and 02 were assembled at extreme range from the Octahedron shaped Angel which had been codenamed Ramiel. The massive JSDF sniper's rifle was in the hands of Unit 02, piloted by the Second Child, Asuka Soryu Langley.
An equally massive shield constructed from a single stage to orbit rocket was in the hands of Unit 00 piloted by the First Child, Ayanami Rei.
Lastly, The Sixth Child, Haruno Sakura was in Unit 01 ready to assist her comrades in any way necessary.
All three young women saw their chronometers turn to zero hours and heard Captain Katsuragi Misato's voice command, "COMMENCE OPERATION YASHIMA!"
The rifle began to charge as all the power transferred to Mount Futago.
"Release final safety systems!" ordered Misato.
Hyuga Makoto said, "Pull the hammer!" in a trembling voice.
Asuka smiled grimly as she cocked the hammer on the biggest rifle in existence.
"Ten seconds to discharge." announced a perspiring Aoba Shigeru. "Nine, eight, seven…"
Ibuki Maya yelled, "High energy readings within the target!"
'Damn, it's spotted us!' thought Misato. 'But if we can get in the first shot…we have a chance!'
"Three, two, one…" said Aoba.
"FIRE!" roared Misato.
Asuka pulled the trigger on the positron rifle at the same time the Angel unleashed its particle beam. The two beams of annihilation interacted as they passed one another and missed their targets causing massive collateral damage. The Second Child screamed as the mountainside had a huge hole blown out of it nearby.
"I… MISSED?!" exclaimed the redhead.
"The second shot!" ordered Captain Katuragi, "Move it, Asuka!"
"OKAY!" responded Asuka as she moved quickly down the mountain to take a second shot.
"I'm getting another high energy reading from within the target!" cried Maya.
'It's too soon!' thought Misato.
Ramiel fired straight at Unit 02 and Asuka screamed…
…Only to be shielded by Rei in Unit 00.
"Ayanami…" whispered Asuka
The shield lasted only 17 seconds and Unit 00 was blown back into unit 02, pinning Asuka down in place.
Asuka heard Sakura's voice to her right, "The rifle...! Throw it to me!" yelled the rosette.
The redhead reacted on instinct and tossed the massive rifle to Unit 01. Sakura knew she didn't have time for the computer to lock on to the Angel. Skidding into a kneeling position, the rosette got up close and relied on her ninja training to take the shot...
…The backlash was incredible as the Angel died in a fiery explosion.
"WE DID IT!" cheered Misato.
…
Sakura set down the rifle and rushed over to Asuka and Rei. Unit 00 collapsed. Asuka immediately pulled the entry plug out of the fallen Unit 00 and set it on the ground.
Rei woke up to the faces of Asuka and Sakura looking down at her. Her red eyes blinked a few times and she said, "Soryu...? Haruno?"
"You're okay!" cheered Asuka. "I'm so glad."
Sakura was discreetly running a medical diagnostic with healing chakra and smiled. "Everything's alright now Rei. We're all alive and well and the Angel is dead. Can you stand?"
Rei saw a tear go down the redhead's cheek and she asked, "Why are you crying Soryu-san?"
"I'm crying because I'm happy idiot." sniffed Asuka smiling. "You should be smiling too."
Rei gave a minimal smile that lit up her whole face. Sakura said, "That a girl. Let's get you out of this entry plug."
The three battered and exhausted pilots crawled out the entry plug and soon had lights shining down on them. Misato was calling their names when she saw the three younger women come into view.
The purple haired woman said joyously, "You girls did it, I'm so proud of you three!"

NERY Headquarters, Tokyo-3
Naruto and Unit 03 arrived in Japan three days later. The blonde was glad to be back in his homeland regardless of the circumstances. He'd heard about Operation Yashima but was assured in a coded message from Sakura that all four of his fellow pilots were okay and fully recovered. Then he was greeted by Kaji and informed of some grim news.
"They were experimenting on Unit 04's power source and it exploded." said Kaji. "The whole NERV Nevada branch and everything within an 80-kilometer radius was completely blown away." He showed Naruto a satellite picture of what looked like a crater on the surface of Mars or the moon.
"How many thousand lives were lost?" asked Naruto. "Evangelions seem to be humanity's way of playing Russian Roulette."
Kaji laughed humorlessly. "That's a pretty realistic view on things Naruto. I don't know if us playing in God's territory, or the Angels are worse."
["Just try to stay out of trouble Kaji."] signed Naruto. ["They are watching you."]
Kaji was a bit surprised that Naruto was using Konoha code with him. The older man smiled weakly. ["I'll do my best."]

NERV Cafeteria
Captain Katsuragi was having lunch with her pilots Asuka, Sakura, Shinji, and Rei. "...And when the orders came down that you were all given the rank of full Lieutenant (and a big pay raise), I knew I had to get you guys matching black bomber jackets with Lieutenant's bars! Try them on kids! I got the sizes from Ritsuko so they should be right." said Misato eagerly as she chugged a beer.
"Ummm, are you allowed to drink on duty Misato?" asked Shinji.
She frowned. "Shush up Shinji! One doesn't count!" That's when her eyes were covered by someone from behind. "Who's there?! Cut it out!" screeched Misato.
"Kaji!" exclaimed Asuka. "Where have you been?"
"Still drinking in middle of the day, huh Misato…?" said the unshaven man.
"W-wh-what are you doing here?!" asked Katsuragi shrilly.
Kaji smiled. "Well, that's a nice way to say hello …especially when we haven't seen each other in forever." Then he smirked. "I accompanied Asuka on a business trip from Germany."
"Well good for you!" exclaimed Misato sarcastically. "If you're done with your business, why don't you be on your way?"
"I'm afraid not." he replied. "I've got no plans to leave for the time being."
The NERV Special Inspector was soon bantering with the pilots much to Misato's chagrin. "So, I hear you're living with Katsuragi?" he asked Shinji. At the younger man's nod he asked, "Does she still sleep sprawled all over the bed?"
Misato shrieked, "W-W-What the HELL are you saying?! In front of children no less?!"
"Huh, why is it wrong in front of children?" asked Shinji cluelessly.
"…" said the purple haired woman. Then she turned to Kaji and roared, "GO AWAY!"
"See you later!" said Kaji as he speed-walked away with a jaunty wave.
'This is a nightmare!' thought Misato.
…
Doctor Akagi Ritsuko's Office
In the meantime, Naruto was getting a full physical from Doctor Akagi Ritsuko. She took a blood sample and said, "It looks like you are in perfect health as always Naruto. I talked to Doctor Marla Collette, and she reported that you reached 100% synchronization with Eva Unit 03 when no one else could even get it to activate. It will be interesting to look at the records myself."
"It wasn't half as interesting as having an Angel ravage my body and mind personally." said Naruto with a frown. "I'm sure you'll want to look at those records too."
Ritsuko blinked and looked at Naruto for a moment. She was shocked he wasn't his upbeat self. "I'm sorry to say this but the kind of work we do is hazardous. You and your fellow pilots are the last line of defense for humanity. For what it's worth, I wish you didn't have to face such dangers. If I had my way, none of this would be happening and you would be out having fun like a normal teenager."
'Somehow I don't quite believe you Doctor Akagi…' thought Naruto. 'You're in this way too deep and can't get out. I think you might be the crack in SEELE's armor I'm looking for.'
For her part, Ritsuko felt as if the blue-eyed blonde was staring into her soul. It was frightening and it made her wonder exactly what Naruto went through with the Angel. She finally turned away, unable to match his glare. "We're done with your physical Naruto, thank you for your time." Hearing Naruto walk out and close the door behind him, she quickly lit a cigarette to soothe her frayed nerves. "God, I need a drink after that." she thought aloud.
…
Ayanami Rei's AWESOME New Apartment
"This place is wunderbar Rei!" said Asuka enthused. "How can you afford it?!"
Rei replied, "My old apartment was in the slums and Uzumaki-kun helped me write a formal complaint. After Commander Ikari saw how I was living, he signed off on this new place."
"But what about the wine bar, the billiard table and hot tub?" asked Asuka.
"Uzumaki-kun put those in there for some reason, I don't know why." said the light blue haired girl. "Commander Ikari signed the papers without reading them. It's quite unlike him."
The redhead snorted, "Pffft! So, you have four bedrooms, four full baths as well as a kitchen, dining room and entertainment room? I need a place like this!"
Rei looked puzzled for a moment and said, "All your belongings are in storage, and you are in a hotel, correct?" Seeing Asuka nod in affirmation, the red eyed girl said, "Why not move in here?"
The redhead had stars in her eyes. "REALLY?"
The light blue haired girl nodded. "It's much too big for one person."
"AWESOME! This is going to be great Rei!" exclaimed Asuka. "We're gonna have a blast in this place!"
…
Later…
Sakura sweat dropped. "So, you're moving in with Rei, Asuka…? I guess there is plenty of room -and the place is furnished. Shinji-kun and I visit there often to see Rei. I hope you two get along well."
"What about Naruto-kun?" asked the redhead. "Does he visit there too?"
"He drops in once in a while." answered the rosette. "He helped her move in after all. Shinji-kun and I helped too. Rei has a hard time making friends because she's so quiet, so we are gently trying to break her out of her shell."
"Gently huh? Us pilots need to stick together!" said Asuka excitedly.
…
It wasn't long before Naruto got a moving company (read: henged shadow clones) to move the masses of Asuka's stuff into Rei's Apartment. The original Naruto, Shinji and Sakura helped too. Sakura also helped decorate the room Asuka picked for herself. It took the whole weekend to get things set up.

NERV Headquarters
In the meantime, Ikari Gendo and Fuyutsuki Kōzō were talking about NERV Germany's construction program of Unit 06*① which was being worked on in favor of Unit 05*② with SEELE's Chairman Keel Lorenz.
Keel stated, "The Angels are appearing more sporadically than the Dead Sea Scrolls originally indicated. We are doing more research. As a result, Unit 06 will be completed soon in NERV Germany and will be assigned to the Sixth Child, Haruno Sakura provided she can synchronize with it."
"Unit 00 is 91% repaired Chairman Keel." reported Fuyutsuki.
"I'm well aware." said Keel in a disappointed tone. "It cost more than the annual budget of many small nations."
Gendo said, "The cost is of little consequence as long as we achieve the Committee's goals."
"Just bear in mind you work for the Committee Ikari Gendo." warned Keel. "We are watching you." His image faded out leaving Commander Ikari and Fuyutsuki alone.
Fuyutsuki said, "The old men are getting restless."
"All is proceeding according to plan." said Gendo. "The addition of Unit 06 to our arsenal will be a great benefit against the Angels. We also have the Spear of Longinus enroute to us via aircraft carrier from the South Pole as we speak."
…
Asuka and Rei's Wunderbar Apartment
To celebrate Asuka moving in, the five pilots were having a movie night on Rei's 200cm flat screen television. Naruto had reformatted his blackmail material of Commander Ikari's and Deputy Commander Fuyutsuki's adventure in Rei's old apartment into a 90-minute movie called An Evening at Rei's:

"I…I admit defeat…" croaked Fuyutsuki hoarsely as head laid in the hall with Commander Ikari sprawled on top of him. "I can't take any more of this hellhole."
Gendo coughed out some smoke and said "Th-that was the coup de grace. I've never suffered so much misfortune in my life in such a short time…It is a miracle you're alive Rei…"
…
…With the exception of Rei (who was actually smiling), the kids were basically howling with laughter by the time the movie ended. Needless to say, Naruto had to swear them all to secrecy -At least until he was ready to broadcast it.
…
Tokyo-3 Middle School, Class 2-A
The cleanup from Operation Yashima had been completed enough where school was open again on Monday and the five pilots duly reported in for class. It was Asuka's first day in class (she had graduated from a German University earlier that year) so the redhead wasn't looking forward to hours of boredom.
She was soon in front of the class making her introductions. Switching into her friendly, charming mode, the Second Child said, "I'm Soryu Asuka Langley. It's nice to meet you all."
"She…she looks so cool!" said one student.
Another said, "Seriously cute…and her legs are so long."
"Check out her hair!" said a girl. "Golden-red and such body…"
"I'm going to make a move on her!" exclaimed a boy.
Another boy replied, "A dork like you? There's no chance!"
The redhead wanted to sit by Naruto in the back but found the only open chair was by her fellow pilot, Ikari Shinji. Asuka felt like Shinji was okay. He was Sakura's boyfriend after all… More to the point, he'd destroyed two Angels all on his own.
…
Lunchtime…
"Woah, what a babe!" said Toji as he gawked at Asuka.
Kensuke agreed. "She's totally my type!"
Shinji sighed and looked at Sakura. "She does look like a star." said the rosette with a smile.
"She's not you though…" said the Ikari boy.
"HEY LOVEBIRDS!" yelled Toji. Shinji blushed and Sakura frowned. Suzuhara didn't miss a beat. "You two seem to know the new chick. Why don't you introduce her to me and Kensuke?"
"Why don't you just go over and introduce yourselves?" asked Sakura crossly.
Toji replied, "Well, Aida's shy and you know I'm the sensitive type."
Shinji face planted and Sakura's eyes nearly rolled out of her head. "You're about as sensitive as a charging rhino Suzuhara." said the rosette.
"Hey, no need to be mean!" said Toji.
Sakura face palmed. "I'm just stating a fact. Asuka's over there talking with Hikari. Just go and say hi."
"The class rep can be pretty scary." replied Kensuke out of nowhere.
…
Outside…
Naruto was sitting under a tree in deep thought about bringing Asuka, Rei, and Shinji into the fold. He knew that Shinji loved Sakura and didn't trust his Father. Asuka was problematical as Naruto didn't know her well enough yet…and then there was Rei. The light blue haired girl was starting to form attachments outside of Commander Ikari and piloting EVA. She was slowly opening up, but the blonde shinobi wondered what secrets she held…
Speaking of which…
Rei came over and sat down beside Naruto. "Uzumaki-kun, you haven't eaten your food. Lunchtime is almost over."
Naruto looked at his watch and said, "I guess I was lost in thought."
"About what?" asked the red eyed girl inquisitively.
"About who we can truly trust but each other as pilots." said Naruto. "There are some that view us as expendable."
Rei's eyes widened slightly as she thought about being replaced by one of the other copies of herself. She was learning about having friends and didn't want to be thrown away. Swallowing hard, she said, "I don't want to be expendable."
"You aren't expendable Rei, not to me." replied the blonde.
She felt a single tear stream down her cheek and said, "We will live through this Uzumaki-kun…together."
…
NERV Headquarters, EVA Cage 4
That evening, the pilots were cross-testing in each other's Units and Sakura was in Unit 03, testing to see if she could synch with it. She though, 'Kurama-sama, will you grant me an audience? I am chunin kunoichi Haruno Sakura of Konoha and a comrade and friend of Uzumaki Naruto.'
Sakura's Mindscape…
Sakura found herself in her mindscape with a colossal nine-tailed fox whose aura simply overwhelmed her. He said, "So you are Haruno Sakura. I am Inari's servant, Kurama no Kyubi. Naruto told me you are a brave ally of his and about your mission."
The rosette bowed and said, "The situation with the Angels is desperate. Will you lend me your strength Kurama-sama?"
"I can only lend you part of my power, Lilim." replied the ancient fox. "If I were to channel my full power through you, your chakra coils would be overloaded, and you would be killed. I can give you full access to the abilities of the Evangelion Unit 03 but none of the chakra abilities."
The kunoichi smiled. "That is more than I'd hoped for Kurama-sama. Thank you very much."
…
Control Room
Ibuki Maya said, "Activation is successful! Sakura has synched at 33.7% and is holding!"
"Excellent!" exclaimed Ritsuko. "You did very well Sakura. You can relax now."
Sakura answered, "Yes Doctor Akagi. Thank you."
Misato said, "The other three children can't synch with Unit 03 at all, but Naruto and Sakura can. I wonder why that is."
"Unit 03 is a bit of a mystery." said Ritsuko. "None of the American pilots could synchronize with it either. I had assumed it was because they'd never synched with an EVA before, but I guess I was wrong."
…
Girl's Showers
Sakura, Asuka, and Rei were showering off after being immersed in LCL for hours. "I'll never get used to LCL or the fact it smells like blood." complained Sakura. "…And the smell never washes off."
"You'll get used to it." said Asuka. "Rei and I both have been dealing with it a lot longer than you Sakura. I do wonder why you could synch with Naruto-kun's Unit though."
"I asked nicely." answered the rosette.
"You asked...?" said Rei confused.
Asuka chuckled. "You've got to be kidding me!"
Sakura replied, "EVAs are living things. Ritsuko admitted they have living components. They should be treated with respect."
"Is that why Uzumaki-kun says all the Units are female but his?" asked Rei.
"I guess so." said Sakura. "Regardless of their gender, I really think Evangelions have souls. I think Unit 02 really likes you, Asuka. It may be part of the reason your synch level is so high…that and you're so skilled. I think it's the same with Shinji-kun and Unit 01."
"Perhaps I should try talking to Unit 00." said Rei.
"Just find your center and think to Unit 00 when you're in the entry plug Rei." said Sakura. "It can't hurt to try it."

Tokyo-3 Middle School, Class 2-A
The next day, the 14-year-olds were all dressed out in track suits (as opposed to just Suzuhara). The girls were watching the boys practice sports when Sakura saw Naruto was showing Shinji the basics of kenjutsu with a wooden sword.
Asuka said, "So Naruto-kun knows swordsmanship? Interesting…"
That was when the boy's coach started scolding Naruto for using bokkens without permission. Naruto's eyes flashed with mischief and he "How about a match then Coach Naha? You fancy yourself a swordsman after all. If I can beat you in a match then I should be qualified to show Shinji a few moves…. Or are you afraid?"
Sakura wanted to face palm, but Asuka seemed very enthused. Even Rei seemed visibly interested.
Coach Naha was incensed and said, "You'll regret challenging ME you brat! After you lose you will clean this gym all by yourself. I don't care if you are a pilot!"
Naruto nodded and said, "Deal."
…
Kendo Mat
15 minutes later, Coach Naha was sprawled out on the mat looking like a train wreck. The spiky haired blonde was absolutely relentless in 'instructing' Coach Naha about the fine art of kenjutsu. …Needless to say, Naruto got permission to show some moves to Shinji…
Asuka had stars in her eyes. 'I'm impressed.' thought the redhead. 'I already new he was lethal with a kunai knife, but I had no idea he could handle a sword that way.'
Rei was admiring Naruto's form as well. 'I wonder if he could teach me as well as Ikari kun.' She blushed a tiny bit.
…
NERV Headquarters, Gymnasium
Misato was surprised to see her pilots all practicing kendo together as a group with Naruto instructing them. Before the group didn't really have a regular exercise regimen that they all participated in. 'This is a positive thing.' thought the purple haired woman to herself.
"It's amazing what they can do once they are motivated." said Ritsuko as she walked up beside Misato.
Kaji strolled up and asked, "A progressive katana could be a real plus for the EVAs in close combat."
"I agree." said Misato after a few moments of thought. She turned to Doctor Akagi and asked, "A katana is possible, isn't it?"
Ritsuko sweat dropped and replied, "Of course it's possible. The question is whether or not Commander Ikari will authorize such a thing."
"Asuka has a spear for Unit 02." added Kaji helpfully.
Doctor Akagi frowned realizing she was being double teamed and said, "I'll ask, okay?" and stormed off.
…
Commander Ikari's Office
Ritsuko came into the Elder Ikari's Office and found that both the Commander and Fuyutsuki were watching the pilot's swordplay with great interest on the screen. The bleach blonde scientist sweat dropped.
"A progressive sword would by a natural extension of the progressive knife." said Fuyutsuki. "I'm surprised that we didn't think of it before considering Unit 03 can project a swordlike blade on its own."
Commander Ikari nodded. "I agree." He turned to Ritsuko and said "Make two prototype katana blades for the EVAs Doctor Akagi. One for Unit 03 and one for Unit 00. Rei needs a little extra punch."
"Yes sir." replied Ritsuko.
…
NERV Headquarters, EVA Cage 1
A week later, Ayanami Rei was inside the Entry Plug of the newly repaired Unit 00 meditating. She stretched her thoughts out around her and said mentally, 'I am the First Child, Ayanami Rei. I don't know your name, but will you help me fight the Angels as my partner? We need all the friends we can get to face the enemy.'
Rei suddenly felt the sensation of approval and warmth filling her body. Opening her eyes, she thought, 'We can do this!'
…
Control Room
Maya was watching the screens as Rei's data flitted across her line of sight. "Rei's synch ratio with Unit 00 just jumped up by 23.6% and is holding steady!"
Ritsuko's eyes widened. "Cross check and verify those numbers. This is unprecedented!"
'I knew you could do it Rei.' thought Sakura with a mental cheer.

Well, it was kind of weird coming back to this story after years of being dormant. Operation Yashima and the filler sections were outlined but most of it was new. I read over the Evangelion Manga a bit to get back into the groove of things.
