Nonfeathered Friends

Hawks returned the next morning to the Watchtower early the next morning. He could feel the eyes of the other heroes on him as he went to the mess hall. From what he understood, some billionaire funded the whole thing. Could anyone be that crazy rich? It sounded crazy to him, but he liked the perks. Seriously, having a computer make his favorite meal any time he wanted it? Paradise. Well; almost.

He just had to deal with the other heroes. The auditorium was full - he usually went to his assigned room to eat alone but maybe he could find out more about the Wonder Cousins, Superman, and Supergirl. That Robin Hood guy seemed like a good bet. He wasn't one of the main six heroes that started the League, but he was close enough to them. He had seen the guy go off on missions with Supergirl often enough. Him and that girl in the black tights.

"Hey, this seat taken?" He asked the two. They both looked up, their brow raised. Robin Hood spoke up first.

"All yours, newbie." He said.

Hawks gave an easy grin and sat down.

"Call me Hawks."

"Green Arrow."

"Black Canary."

"I don't see wings." Hawks pointed out. How was she a Canary? The woman grinned at him but didn't reply.

"You'll find out if you make her angry." Green Arrow said dryly.

"Oh, come on. I'm not that bad." The Canary said, sending him a playful grin. "It's nice to finally meet you, Hawks. Half the league has been talking about you. Makes a girl curious."

"Makes me wonder what kind of universe he came from." The Green Arrow muttered loud enough for them all to hear.

"Oh, me? Nothing special." Hawks said brightly, "But I thought I might want to learn the ropes, you know? Me being a newbie and all."

The two looked at him with some level of amusement.

"So, you tell us yours, we tell you ours?" Black Canary offered up.

"If you insist." It was a good place to start. Then he could figure out the whole Kent thing, and Supergirl. Intel was valuable. And suddenly, he had a new friend. "My quirk is fierce wings."

"Your quirk?" Green Arrow asked, his brow raised.

"I don't see how a guy in a renaissance fair getup can critique me." Hawks said brightly. Green Arrow glared but Black Canary giggled.

"You know he's right, Robin Hood." She said before asking, "And what is Fierce Wings?"

"I can control my feathers."

They both ohed over it. Neither of them said anything as he sat and waited.

"Well - what's your quirk?"

"Our quirk? What's a quirk?" Green Arrow asked.

"I think he means power…"

"I know, Pretty-bird, but seriously? Quirk?"

"Aw, Green Arrow, you don't have to compliment a guy like that." Hawks cut in with a wide grin. Black Canary laughed while Green Arrow frowned.

"My quirk is an ultra-sonic scream." She said after sobering up. Hawks hummed, so that's why she was called a Canary. Hawks turned to Green Arrow to wait for an answer. The man just took a drink of his water. Black Canary smiled knowingly. Hawks started to piece his silence together. There was no way.

"You're quirkless," Hawk stated in a disbelieving tone. Seriously? With guys like Superman, they let quirkless people on their team?

"Batman doesn't have any powers, I don't see you making fun of him."

There's more than one?

"Most of us started as vigilantes just trying to clean up the streets. Gotham, Batman's city, is one of the worst. Along with Bludhaven and Star City." Canary offered up.

Hawks kept the frown from showing on his face. Vigilantes. The league was composed of Vigilantes. He had thought there was some kind of process to this all, but no.

"Vigilantes, huh? So you guys just run off from the law, killing villains huh?" Hawks asked.

Black Canary frowned, and Green Arrow glared at him.

"Is that what you think you're gonna do here? You should know the league has a thing against killing. And we're working with government and local law. Is that gonna be a problem, Feathers?" Green Arrow told him, placing a hand down on the table. He stared into Hawks' very soul like he thought they'd fight right then and there.

Hawks laughed, waving his hands. "Oh no! Just wondering how things are run here, that's all."

Green Arrow didn't look like he bought it. Black Canary placed a hand on his shoulder

"Oli…" she began, before looking back at Hawks, "Sorry about that. It's just a touchy subject."

Hawks hummed as he picked at his food. He might have lost his shot to ask about the Kents and the Super-Cousins.

"Yeah, it's a pretty personal thing for heroes." Hawks agreed. He ended up leaving soon after. Oli kept glaring at him. He figured it was a good time to go.

AN: I wanted to write something up for fun. I'm liking Hawks in JLA, he's a fun character. I'm still having a hard time nailing his personality. I'll have to watch more clips of him. He's kind, but opinionated, but also open, but very closed. He's full of contradictions. He's fun, I think.
