As we continued our journey, the forest slowly gave way to a landscape that bore the subtle marks of civilization. The thick canopy of trees began to thin, allowing occasional glimpses of sunlight to filter through the foliage. With each step, the anticipation of what lay ahead quickened our pace.
The distant hum of a city slowly reached our ears, steadily intensifying with each passing moment. It was a symphony of life, a bustling hub of human activity that stood in stark contrast to the serene wilderness we had left behind. The air became thick with the scents of people, mingling harmoniously with the aromas of street food, exotic spices, and a multitude of other wares, weaving a tapestry of rich scents that enveloped us.
As we approached the city's border, the cacophony of voices and the clamor of the market assailed my heightened senses. The atmosphere buzzed with electric energy, and excitement permeated the air, making it feel charged with anticipation. The city's labyrinthine streets and bustling marketplaces promised adventure, concealed mysteries, and, most importantly, the long-awaited reunion that beckoned from within its chaotic embrace.
The welcoming gates of the city walls swung open to embrace us, allowing me to step inside after so many years of absence. The familiar sights and sounds stirred a sense of nostalgia within me, and I couldn't help but smile at the memories that flooded my mind—memories of a time when I had last called the House of the Moon my home. It felt like a distant lifetime ago, a chapter of my life that had been locked away in the depths of time, waiting to be reopened.
Amidst this vibrant backdrop, I couldn't help but notice Shippo's nervous energy. He bounced anxiously from foot to foot, his gaze darting back and forth, almost as if he were scanning for something hidden among the throngs of people. His apprehension mirrored my own, for I knew that within the city's heart, not only secrets and old friends awaited us, but also the unknown challenges that lay ahead.
The city's presence grew steadily louder and more vibrant as we approached. The cacophony of sounds and scents of people thronging the market assaulted my heightened senses, infusing the air with an atmosphere charged with excitement and anticipation.
Once every century, the House of the Moon hosted a rare and extraordinary event known as the Changing of the Guard. During this unique occasion, both demons and humans were granted entry into the palace grounds to witness the elite guard's rigorous training. It was also an opportunity for aspirants to try out for a coveted position among the palace guards, a position of great honor and responsibility.
I had dedicated myself to preparing Shippo for this pivotal moment. He was poised to participate in the guard trials, and upon earning his place, he would finally be granted the chance to reunite with his father. Shippo's father was not just a legendary figure; he was a demon whose name resonated through the annals of history. His impressive feats in both battle and leadership were renowned far and wide. He had faced formidable adversaries and triumphed in epic battles, earning him a place of unparalleled respect.
As we ventured deeper into the city's vibrant life, the excitement of the Changing of the Guard hung in the air, as did the weight of Shippo's impending trial. His journey was on the verge of an extraordinary transformation, and within the palace's venerable walls, he would encounter impressive feats, formidable adversaries, and opportunities that could reshape his destiny in ways that even the grand tales of his father's past could scarcely foretell.
"Now, Shippo," I turned to address the eager boy, who was practically brimming with nervous excitement. "It would be best if we settle into our rooms first, freshen up a bit, and then we can set out to explore the town." Shippo's eyes lit up with anticipation, and any lingering traces of his earlier nervousness vanished as he grabbed my hand and practically dragged me toward the palace gates. "Come on, Mama," he urged, his enthusiasm infectious. "We've got to hurry!" I chuckled at his eagerness, quickening my pace to keep up with him.
We strolled through the town, Shippo's wide eyes taking in every new sight and scent with boundless curiosity. He was eager to explore every nook and cranny, often pausing to investigate something intriguing. As we ascended the gleaming white marble steps leading to the palace entrance, we were greeted by a black bear demoness. Her demeanor was bright and welcoming, exuding a bubbly personality eager to assist.
"Hi, my name is Mia. What can I help you with today?" Mia's cheerful tone invited conversation, and I introduced myself and Shippo. "My name is Kagome, and this is Shippo. We're here to participate in the Changing of the Guard."
Mia beamed at Shippo and gestured for us to enter the grand hall. Eagerly, Shippo bounded through the doors and was immediately transfixed by the magnificence of the entranceway. I paused before crossing the threshold, my fingers briefly brushing over the clan marking and the symbol of the moon intricately carved into the door. I uttered my blessings as we passed through, a gesture of reverence toward the household and its ancestors. It felt like a poignant connection to a heritage I had long left behind.
I followed Shippo into the grand entrance hall, where his excitement seemed to know no bounds. Mia approached us once more, her friendly demeanor unwavering as she delivered some news.
"As there have been many possible recruits for the Changing of the Guard," Mia began, "they have occupied a significant number of rooms in the palace. The recruits will be residing in the eastern section of the palace, close to the training grounds. I'm sorry to inform you that you'll have to take a room in the western side of the building."
The revelation that we would be assigned to the western section caught me by surprise. That part of the House of the Moon was reserved for nobles and demons of exceptionally high standing. It seemed there was an unusually high number of recruits this time. Although I was taken aback, I had no doubt that Shippo would excel in his endeavor, regardless of where we were housed.
"Mia, could you please show Shippo to his quarters?" I requested, offering a warm smile to the enthusiastic bear demoness. "I'll find my own way."
Turning to Shippo, who was still entranced by the ornate decorations that adorned the walls, I laid out my expectations. "I expect you to freshen up, change into some new clothes, and meet me back in the main hall in an hour," I instructed gently. Shippo nodded with determination, his eyes shining with resolve, before he turned to follow Mia down the corridor to his temporary residence for the coming days.
As they vanished from view, I shifted my attention westward, my destination clear in my mind—a bath.
