Hagrid loved animals, a little too much. This is where the story started. Hagrid got a dragon egg from the weird shady guy and thought nothing about it in his excitement. And of course, this did not stop Hagrid from drinking to excess.
Harry, Ron, and Hermione are friends with a full-grown man with the emotional maturity of a five-year-old, which is astounding even compared to the limited emotional maturity of the rest of the Hogwarts Staff. They didn't realize with them being children how weird it was that he seemed to need the approval of children. Also how weird it was that he wanted to hang out with children.
Which leads us to the current situation. Hagrid would not give up his dragon! No matter how hard Harry, Ron, and Hermione beg, he would not see reason. So they took matters into their own hands. They contacted Charlie who was Ron's brother and told him that unless he wanted his mother to know about all the girlfriends he brought to Romania, he would bring the baby dragon back to Romania. Turns out they didn't need to get blackmail from his brothers and sister on Charlie. He wanted a promotion and getting another dragon to the reserve was enough. Oh well.
Anyway, it took a whole day to convince Hagrid that Norbert would be happy away from his "Mummy." After that, they got the dragon away and Ron didn't die from the bite.
Harry, Hermione, and Neville got in trouble though. Neville got in trouble for trying to warn them about Malfoy trying to get them in trouble. Malfoy got in trouble but not as much for being a snitch. So Gryffindor lost 150 points and there was a mass shunning that McGonagall did not do anything about it.
