Thanks to all readviewers! (I swear I'm going to get to actual responses and reviews soon...)
There is more to this story, but it's not something I can write in 24 hours. Maybe I'll work on it in the background and try to match it to a different prompt. In the meantime, this is some of it.
Prompt: Air
He did not count the years on the island, but it had been many since the beginning of his rest.
It was a simple life. Every morning he sang, and the feast was consumed, and he grew a little younger. Every night he sang, and the feast was renewed. They were not the songs he had sung in the heavens, but they carried some of the same magic. In the day he walked the island, tending to its plants and animals and buildings. In the night he walked beneath his brethren, and took rest in the hillside cave.
It had been many years, when he left the cave one morning to find a Lion awaiting him. A small squirming bundle hung around the great golden neck.
"Greetings, son of Light. I have a task for you."
Ramandu bowed. "You are welcome as always, my king. How may I serve?"
"I would have you care for this child, until one shall come who will have her to wife. Her mother cannot raise her. Nor can her father's kindred."
Ramandu took the baby girl from the sling. Cooing, she scrunched his beard in a tiny fist. He looked down at her sparkling grey eyes, and nodded gravely in comprehension. "And the father himself has broken the law of the heavens, and consequently is no doubt indisposed at present."
"Indeed. This little one is half a star, yet only half a star, and unable to tread the Dance. You will be as father to her, and she will be as daughter to you. Teach her well, for she will one day become a great queen. Will you do this?"
"Of course."
Ramandu bowed once more. When he straightened, the Lion was gone, and the sun was rising.
