A/N: I've had this chapter written for quite some time (years) and I've modified it several times.
Thanks to Katherine.
I carry the surprise apology gift for Nathanael in one hand and my bag in the other. I have managed to get halfway close to him and he deserves it. I should be thinking only about that, but Kagami's call was very important.
So here I am, approaching the place Kagami told me about. Luckily I didn't go out in a limo or there would be no way to do this.
I subtly walk along the alley. I have to come in with some excuse. I open the bag and look at Pollen.
"Why don't you throw the lipstick on the floor? It is cylindrical and can roll inwards." she suggests.
The lipstick? I bought it yesterday so it's not out of print yet, but still... Ugh, damn, this is for Kagami. If I have to sacrifice a lipstick for her, I will do it.
I take out my beautiful light wine lipstick and touch up very well, to be the last time, you have to make the most of it. I close it and pretend it's slipping, it rolls into the alley and I complain out loud.
I go after it. Now I'm going to see a corpse. One of murder, not of a university. With horrible appearance and not at all clean. After this there is no turning back.
"Pollen, I'm afraid." I whisper.
"You can do it, my queen. Nobody is as strong as you."
I go deeper. I smell it first. A strong smell of blood and pee that makes me want to vomit. Then I see him: a man with his severed head lying in a pool of blood. I can perfectly see the spine inside the flesh of what was once his neck and is now two different parts. And my lipstick has gotten embedded in one of them. I can't see his face, fortunately. It makes me gag, but I can't stay here and look at it.
I use the weakest light on my phone to illuminate the ground. There are some footprints. They are strange, I don't know what shoes made them. Just in case, I pretend I'm looking for my lipstick as I step into the pool of blood and step on the footprints.
Well, I don't see anything else. Now I have to scream.
And that's what I do, until my throat hurts.
"You are the one who found the body."
I nod. I've decided to pretend I'm the dumb, frivolous blonde everyone thinks I am. I'm a better actress than they think.
"I dropped my lipstick. I went in to look for it."
The light from the police car comes and goes, causing the colors to change with a very strong contrast.
"Why did you do it?"
"It came out yesterday and it is a limited edition from Chanel. It's closed, I'd just have to take it to the expensive cleaners at Le Grand Paris. They could disinfect anything."
The man nods. I think I haven't been stupid enough yet.
"Keep going."
"The alley is very dark, so I couldn't see well."
And the car lights now make my eyes hurt.
"Why didn't you use the phone flashlight?"
"I did it." I take out my mobile phone and show him the flashlight at minimum light. The change in intensity is not visible to the naked eye. "The light is very bad. This mobile is very out of fashion, it is already a year old. I had been thinking about changing it and now I will definitely do it."
The cop looks at my mobile phone for a moment, without touching it.
"You can change the intensity."
I act surprised.
"Oh really? I had no idea!"
"No matter how little light it was, you should have realized that there was a body."
I nod again and wrinkle my nose.
"I thought he was a drunk. I noticed that he was stepping in a liquid and I didn't want to think about what it was. You know, what drunks do in alleys. But then I saw that I was leaving very dark footprints and I took a closer look. It was blood!"
The cop finishes writing down my statement. Or so I think.
"Didn't the smell catch your attention?"
I shake my head.
"The truth is, no. I have no idea what the alleys smell like, so I thought it was the usual smell."
The cop nods and writes again. I want to go now. I still have one more attempt to look stupid before I threaten him to let me leave.
"Can you give me my lipstick now?" I ask, knowing that I have already lost it forever.
"No. You will not get it back, it is a test."
"Then I can go now, right? The lights are making me dizzy. It wouldn't be good for anyone if I got too involved in a case like that. People are starting to come."
The policeman understands my very subtle threat and lets me go. Of course, these people can't protect us from Hawk Moth.
"…the health budget. … Today there have been problems over the budget of the reconstruction of the Louvre pyramid, which was destroyed by the Reverser effect on the museum workers, as well as an alarming number of works of art that are missing or in an irreparable state. The number of divorces has also increased by 27% since six months ago, possibly due to the Dark Cupid akuma."
I turn off the television before they trash us.
I open my closet. I think I'm going to wear that pastel yellow jacket that matches my hair. Every time I put it on I can't help but think about how good it feels on me and that makes me happy. And I need it after having seen the news. It's Pollen's fault, she was the one who wanted to see them.
"Don't turn off them. It is necessary to know what the hive thinks, especially if you are the queen." Pollen scolds me.
I snort and I know I look like a little girl, but I don't care about.
"But TV gets on my nerves. They always insult us. They are ungrateful."
I go to the bathroom and look at what makeup to put on today. I want to wear it combined with clothes.
I sigh. I'm a little tired, even if it's in the morning.
Some days have passed since the murder. Alix pretends to be fine, because even though I don't know how to read her, it's impossible for her to really be. Also, Nathanael has noticed something, because he asked me about it. With all the pain in my heart, I have had to tell him that telling him is her thing, not mine. He's still worried.
And Alix has not been the only one affected. Kagami is again as tense as she was at the beginning. Before it would have been difficult for me to know, but now... Adrien also asked me about her, and I gave the same answer.
I... I'm fine. Seeing the body has only given me some nightmares and they haven't told anyone that I was the one who found it. Some police officers, my parents, and obviously, Kagami and Alix know it. My mother didn't give a shit, and my father hired a psychologist for me again and asked me how I was doing. That's the only thing we talked about.
I want to go out for a walk.
I'm about to leave my room when the phone rings. When I look at it, I see on the screen a photo of when I gave Alix a makeover. The urgency on her face when she realized I was going to take a photo is wonderful.
I pick up the phone, preparing to be friendly.
"Girls." She called both? I turn to Pollen. She knows from my expression that she needs to be attentive and she gets on the other end of the phone. "You have to come to the alley behind school. You have to see this."
"Wait, what..." Kagami starts to speak, but Alix hangs up.
I look at Pollen. She tilts her head to the side, confused.
"What do you think it's happening ?" I ask her.
"I don't know, but she doesn't seem hurt, although she is nervous. We have to go soon."
I nod and open the bag for Pollen. She comes in and we leave the hotel. It took us a few minutes to reach the alley. Kagami is already here.
"Why did it take you so long?" she asks me she. You can tell that she has come as quickly as possible: her hair is wet and disheveled, and her clothes are wrinkled "Did you take long because you wanted to get ready? Chloe!"
"That's not why, I swear. I... was going for a walk when Alix called."
The aforementioned raises an eyebrow at me. She doesn't believe me. Kagami and I look at each other and follow her, she to the left of her and me to the right of her.
"And you, how did you come so fast?" I give it back to her.
"I have come in Longg."
A noise comes from her leather jacket. It sounds something like "Am I now a means of transportation?"
Alix stops in the middle of the alley and we both stop next to her. What does she do? There is nothing here. She turns towards the wall and we do too.
"What is this?" Kagami asks.
"A graffiti, clearly." I answer her.
She looks at me with a frown.
"I know, I mean, is this a threat or something else?"
"That's just a crazy person who made graffiti. Nothing else." I keep saying.
I want to believe that it is not.
Alix shakes her head in denial and speaks in a low voice.
"Yes, it is something more. Don't you think it's strange that the graffiti is right here, where Hawk Moth confronted any of us for the first time? This has to be from him, no one else would know."
But it can't be, if someone has done this for Hawk Moth, it means that someone admires him.
"If that is true, it means he has a cult." Kagami says my thoughts out loud.
The graffiti is simple but effective. A large butterfly mark like the one akumas have, in the same exact color and three words in silver that cross it: Akuma Fraternity.
Kagami takes a deep breath before speaking.
"If he has a cult, he has people willing to akumatize whenever he wants, and if he has people willing to fight us for him when he says so, he has an army."
"We must find the guardian and tell him what happens to give the miracles to the rest of the holders." continues Alix.
We need our own army.
