It had been five years since the defeat of the Fire Lord, and they had all grown older. Aang himself had turned 18 just a few months prior. And at the moment, they were travelling to a small village in the Earth Kingdom, where Suki had led them to under almost no explanation. Although Zuko had been worried, Toph had insisted on going.

A second after the solar eclipse and firebending returns to the world, Ozai shoots lightning towards Zuko. A second after that, born of instinct inside every human being, Zuko dodges. Instead of running away from his father, Zuko faces him. Not willing to put the weight of the world on a 13 year old's shoulders, Zuko fights. He screams for all to hear. "Agni Kai!"

For every Avatar, there was a Protector, one who came from the element the Avatar was born into previously in the cycle. A Protector's job and duty is to guard the Avatar's reincarnations into the next elements by ANY means necessary, even if the Protector's own life is forfeit. Azula had left the fire nation and took up work as a bounty hunter. She was good at it, able to standover all those pleading to be let free. Yet one drink, caused what most would guess. A child born to Azula the only one who showed her unconditional love. Still fate deals the cards, yet no matter the cards the backs are always blue.

Destiny is a funny thing. A split-second decision results in Zuko being injured during the escape from Pohuai Stronghold. Aang is determined to turn an enemy into a friend and, despite their doubts, Sokka and Katara find themselves also starting to better understand their erstwhile pursuer. For Katara and Zuko, this new understanding could even lead to something more.

The desert sun burns and Zuko probably shouldn't touch the moving cloth, but he does anyway.
