PART ONE
January Days
The door to the bakery swung open, allowing the chilly night air to sneak in. Kento looked up from his not-so-recent volume of Shonen Jump to see who was entering the store. The automatic smile, reserved for regular customers, faded from his face as soon as the strangest boy he had ever seen crossed the store.
Kento often told himself that he had righteous judgment and could discern a person's character with a single glance. Sunglasses on his head and designer clothes were signs of frivolity, perhaps a rich boy passing through town.
"I want something sweet, like, 40 tablespoons of sugar in your morning coffee," he exclaimed, with excessive energy for the time of night. "What do you recommend?"
Kento raised an eyebrow, wondering if the boy was joking or not. Nowadays, this spoiled brat might as well be recording everything with his iPhone. The bakery didn't pay him enough to end up being the laughingstock of the Internet.
"I've tasted nothing as sweet as that," he replied. "I'm afraid we have nothing that meets your requirement."
The boy snorted and puffed his cheeks into a pout.
"Can I offer you something else?"
"I'll choose just by looking, thank you," he replied with a smile as he took a tray and some tweezers.
Kento nodded and pretended to be reading his magazine again, but in reality he continued to watch the boy, who was now grabbing two pieces of every piece of bread there was. He was taking his time, looking at the breads as if his eyes (incredibly blue by the way) had some kind of magical power that told him everything he needed to know to choose only the best.
The boy continued smiling, while he watched carefully as Kento wrapped the stuffed bread in tissue paper, and then placed everything in a brown bag.
"Leave that one; I'll eat it now," he asked.
Nanami nodded, and while she entered the prices on the register. He observed out of the corner of her eye how the boy licked his lips before the first bite and how his face lit up with joy as soon as the bread met his expectations.
"It's ¥844."
The boy looked surprised; Kento wondered if it was because of the price or if, on the contrary, the chocolate filling had made him forget he was buying bread.
He saw him shove the last piece into his mouth hastily, lick his fingers to clean the chocolate residue, and wipe them on his expensive knit sweater. Then he reached into the pockets of his jeans to extract the money from his wallet.
"Thank you," the boy said with a smile and a wink.
Kento forced himself not to roll his eyes and responded under his breath; the other didn't seem to care as he left the store without further comment. He then realized that there was a luxurious black car waiting outside.
"Rich boy," he thought again.
As if he knew Kento was still looking, the boy turned over his shoulder and waved goodbye again with a hand gesture. Kento didn't respond and instead settled back into his seat, resuming his volume of Shonen.
Before long, Kento had already forgotten about the white-haired, blue-eyed stranger. After all, people like him only appeared once in a lifetime.
