song rec: girls like girls - hayley kiyoko

"Miss Akamatsu, I assume you know why I called you in here?"

In truth, Kaede had a pretty good idea why the school's guidance counselor would call her into her office. Unfortunately, a rather large part of her refused to acknowledge it and hoped it would miraculously work itself out somehow.

"...Do I get a reward for passing all of my classes with flying colors?" Kaede tried with a sheepish smile.

The counselor sighed. "Kaede, you are aware that you'll be graduating soon, correct?"

Kaede nodded. "Yep."

"And that you're still missing a credit from a previous year?"

"Right."

"A P.E. credit, Kaede."

"Oh." Kaede's face fell. And there it was. "Uh, well.." She trailed off, as she couldn't think of anything to say, shifting awkwardly in her chair.

"Kaede, I've talked to you about this—multiple times, in fact. And now that you're heading into your last year of high school, I'm going to have to put my foot down."

The counselor directed her attention to the computer in front of her, the clacking of the keyboard filling the would-be silence of the room as she typed. Pressing the "enter" key, she looked back up at Kaede. "So, unfortunately, I'll be replacing the music elective you chose with a P.E. class."

Kaede grimaced. In all fairness, though, this was her own fault. Had she just taken P.E. in freshman year like she originally intended, she wouldn't be in this situation right now. Curse her undying love for music.

Still...

"W-Wait! Are you sure there's no other way I can earn my P.E. credit without having to give up my music class?"

The counselor tapped her chin with the pen in her hand. "Well, now that you mentioned it... Yes. You could join one of the school's sports teams and earn your credit that way." She retrieved a small stack of papers from behind her desk and held them out to Kaede.

Kaede gingerly took the papers, examining them—they were flyers for each and every sports team that Hope's Peak High School had to offer: basketball, volleyball, softball... The possibilities were practically endless.

"Also..." The counselor spoke again while Kaede flipped through the flyers. "While we don't have a flyer for it yet, we do have a dodgeball team."

Kaede glanced up at the counselor, eyebrow raised. "Our school has a dodgeball team?"

The counselor awkwardly coughed. "Well... Yes. It's still a work-in-progress, though."

"Oh."

"Anyways... Just pick a sport you think you'd like, and you can sign up for tryouts at the bulletin board—if you want to join a team, that is."

Kaede pondered over her options. She wasn't sure how much better joining a team would be, physical-wise, but it would give her the opportunity to socialize with other people not from her class.

Plus, girls liked sports—or, at least, liked watching them, right? Maybe joining a team would score her some brownie points with them?

Also, she'd much rather give up her some of after school time instead of her music class.

"Yeah, I'll do that, then," Kaede said, beginning to rise from her chair. "Thanks, Mrs. Sato."

The counselor nodded. "No problem. Oh, and Kaede?"

Kaede looked back just as she begun to open the door of the office to leave. "Yeah?"

"I know you can earn that credit. Just make sure you're focusing on what you need to do. Understood?"

"Of course," Kaede nodded, giving a small smile. "I won't let you down!"

"I'm sure you won't," the counselor replied as the door shut behind Kaede.

And so, keeping true to her promise, Kaede marched herself down to the school's bulletin board when classes let out for lunch.

As you might expect, the bulletin board contained any and all relevant school announcements. The sports announcements, in particular, were pinned up directly in the center.

Almost all of the sports were split into gender divisions, but none of them really interested Kaede. That's when her gaze landed on the flyer for the dodgeball team—it was the newest team, recalling what the counselor said. It was also the only co-ed sport. However, that wasn't the only thing that caused her to direct her attention to said sign-up sheet.

It wasn't the description of the sport itself, or even the small dodgeballs that decorated the flyer that had grabbed her attention. No, it was one of the names that was written on one of the lines below the flyer's description, written in messy handwriting.

"Tenko Chabashira."

Kaede froze. Tenko signed up for dodgeball tryouts? Granted, it made sense given her classmate's athletic and energetic nature, but...

Kaede shook her head. No. Why would there be anything wrong with Tenko signing up for the dodgeball team? She was Kaede's best friend and friends supported each other. In fact, she should sign up too so they'll be on the same team together.

With that notion, Kaede fished out a pink gel pen from her backpack and uncapped it. As she raised her hand with the pen up to the dodgeball flyer to sign her name, a voice grabbed her attention.

"Kaede?"

Kaede looked over to see her best friend, Shuichi, standing there, and her eyebrows shot up in surprise. "Oh hey, Shu!" She then spotted the mechanical pencil in his hand, realizing something. "Wait, are you joining a sport to make up for your P.E. credit, too?"

"Yeah," Shuichi admitted sheepishly.

"That sucks... But, hey! Maybe we can join the same sports team so it won't be that bad! I'm signing up for dodgeball."

Shuichi nodded, peering at the dodgeball flyer Kaede was pointing at. Suddenly, his eyebrows knitted together as he slowly asked, "Uh, Kaede... You aren't signing up for dodgeball just because Tenko did, right?"

Kaede's eyes widened, and she stared at the wall opposite her as if it was the most interesting thing in the world. "I-I mean... We're friends, why wouldn't I want to be on the same team as her?"

"Because you complain about it every time it's brought up."

"That's not true!" Kaede lied, unconvincingly.

"Right..." Shuichi gave Kaede a look that clearly said he didn't believe her.

However, Kaede quickly managed to shift the topic before he could get on her case about it again. "Oh, look!" She pointed at one of the other names written on the sign-up sheet. "Kaito signed up for tryouts, too."

Shuichi immediately craned his neck to get a better look at the sheet. "Wait, really?"

Kaede giggled. Shuichi's crush was just as amusing as it was cute, considering it was pretty obvious to everyone except him and the guy he was crushing on. There were definitely times when she wanted to shout at the two to just kiss; however, she knew it would ultimately be best to stand aside and let them figure out their feelings.

(Though, that didn't stop Kaede from trying to subtly play matchmaker.)

"So, that's a "yes" to dodgeball then, right?"

Shuichi looked back at Kaede, slightly embarrassed, and nodded ("Ah, yeah... I'll sign your name for you.") before raising his pencil to the sheet.

Kaede watched him, a flurry of thoughts running though her mind. Was it a good idea to sign up for dodgeball? She wasn't entirely confident on that.

Ultimately, Kaede decided to push those thoughts aside. After all, it was only dodgeball—she would earn that credit in a snap.

Hopefully.

After school that following Friday, Kaede and Shuichi found themselves in their gym clothes, standing inside the gymnasium of bustling students.

"Uhm, well... There's a lot more people here than I thought there'd be," Shuichi commented.

No kidding, Kaede thought to herself. There had to be thirty students in here, at least—some familiar, others unfamiliar. It didn't help that she was a bit distracted by the cute girls and boys running around in the light gym clothing.

She wasn't able to fawn over them for much longer, as a dark-skinned woman approached her and Shuichi. She had a mop of messy brown hair, and wore a tank top with grey sweatpants.

Kaede recognized her as one of the upperclassmen who'd graduated a couple years back. She must've landed a job as a coach here, Kaede assumed. Good for her.

"Yo!" the woman greeted, giving them a wide grin.

"Hi!" Kaede replied, returning the smile. Shuichi merely waved back.

The woman chuckled and gave the two a once-over. "Let me guess: you're Candy and Luigi, right?"

Kaede's smile dropped some. "Uh, actually, it's Kaede and Shuichi."

"Right, right." The woman nodded, though Kaede couldn't help but doubt that she'd actually remember them. "Alright, lemme ask you this: why should I even let either of ya join this dodgeball team?"

Kaede huffed a breath of air and grinned, putting her hands on her hips. "Because! Even if I'm not good at the actual game, I can at least help out the team in energy!"

The woman chuckled again and offered Kaede an outstretched hand. "I like your spirit! The name's Akane Owari! Or Coach Owari, if you wanna be fancy."

"Nice to meet you, Coach!" Kaede took Akane's hand in a firm handshake.

"Ah, yeah, it's nice to meet you too..." Shuichi added awkwardly.

Akane stared at him for a long moment, lips pursed, causing Shuichi to sweatdrop. Finally, she said, "I'm gonna be honest, I don't really feel the same energy from you as I did from Candy—"

"—Kaede—" Kaede corrected again.

"—But we can work on that," Akane shrugged. "Okay, I'll let you guys go for now. I'll be calling ya over for tryouts in a minute, so be ready!"

As soon as Akane walked away from the duo, Shuichi slumped over, looking even more tired than usual. "I don't think I can do this," he muttered.

"Aw come on, Shu, it can't be that that bad," Kaede assured, placing a comforting hand on her friend's shoulder. Her gaze then landed on two familiar faces behind Shuichi standing some distance away, chatting with each other. "Oh, look, it's Tenko and Kaito!"

"Really?" Shuichi's posture straightened some as he looked over his shoulder to see where Kaede was looking at. Looking back at Kaede, he asked, "Should we go over there?"

Kaede laughed. "Do you even have to ask?"

Shuichi cracked a grin. "Fair enough."

The two walked over to the other duo, and Kaede greeted them with a wave. The two stopped their conversation and turned towards her. "Hey! I didn't know you two signed up for dodgeball!"

Shuichi gave her a confused look. "Huh? But didn't you—"

Kaede quickly covered his mouth, shooting her classmates a smile.

"Hey, Kaede!" Kaito, the louder of the two, greeted before directing his attention towards Shuichi. "What's up, Sidekick?"

Shuichi rubbed his arm, trying (and failing) to hide his slight blush. "Ah... Nothing much."

"Kaede!" Tenko exclaimed, pulling the other girl into a tight hug. "You signed up for dodgeball tryouts, too?"

Kaede chuckled, a bit awkwardly. "Yeah..."

Kaito raised a curious eyebrow at her. "Why?"

Tenko punched him in the arm and glared. "Why does it matter why she signed up?"

"Jeez, I didn't mean it in a bad way," Kaito defended, rubbing his sore arm. "I was just wondering, that's all. She doesn't seem like the physical type, you know?"

Kaede scratched her head. "Yeah, it's...a long story."

Kaito chuckled and nodded. "Well, I'm sure you'll get in no matter the reason!"

"Yeah!" Tenko agreed as she released her grip from Kaede. "You're a strong girl, so I'm definitely sure you'll on the team!"

"Thanks." Kaede giggled, and the two shared a gaze—a gaze that probably lasted longer than a normal one should, but a gaze nonetheless.

Kaito stared between the two girls with a knowing grin before turning to Shuichi. "Well, we should leave the girls alone now, yeah? C'mon, Shuichi!"

"Wha—?" was all a confused Shuichi could get out before he was dragged away by Kaito. "O-Okay, I'm coming, I'm coming!"

Tenko and Kaede watched the boys walk off, the former rolling her eyes. "Thank god," she muttered, half-jokingly. "It's nice to be away from Kaito sometimes."

"I heard that!" Kaito called back.

Tenko ignored him, instead turning back to Kaede with a grin. "So! Why did you sign up for dodgeball?"

Kaede quirked an amused eyebrow at her. "I thought you said it didn't matter?"

"Yeah, but that was because Kaito was the one asking. We're best friends, right? That means no secrets!"

"You got me there." Kaede smiled sheepishly as was explained, "Well, I have to earn my P.E. credit or I won't graduate on time, and I really didn't want to take a regular class, so..."

"Oh." Tenko's smile dropped slightly, but she placed her hands on Kaede's shoulders. "Well, like I said, I'm sure you'll get in, so don't worry about it!"

"I won't," Kaede assured, giving a small nod.

Suddenly, the screech of a whistle filled the air, and the entire gym quiet down and directed their attention towards the source. Kaede and Tenko did the same.

"Alright!" Akane started, putting a hand on her hip. "Tryouts are officially starting as of right now! So, I'm gonna give ya each a number—if I give you a one, go line up at the north side of the gym, and if you get two, line up at the south side."

Kaede ended up being a two, as well as Tenko. Shuichi and Kaito must've gotten a one, as she spotted them in the other line.

"This is exciting, right?" Tenko asked as she and Kaede watched the coach place multi-colored rubber balls on the center line.

"Eh..." Kaede brushed a hand through her bangs. "Define "exciting."

"Okay!" Akane said, taking her spot over by the side. "As you can see, I've split you all into two teams. I'm sure you guys know how dodgeball works—if you get hit, you're out and whatever—so I won't go over that. We'll play a few rounds, and I'll decide the official team from there, alright? Alright. Get into position!"

Kaede wasn't sure what exactly that position was supposed to be, leaving her to awkwardly crouch as if she were about to take off running.

"Go!"

Most students dashed off towards the center line to nap a ball before lunging back and started firing the projectiles at the opposite team.

Kaede definitely did not fall into the "most" category, though, thanks to the energetic teens on her team nearly trampling her before she could even make a move. So, instead, she weaved her way to the back to avoid being a prime target.

Shuichi hadn't been quite so lucky, Kaede noticed, being one of the first ones to get pummeled by a ball and eliminated.

Unfortunately, that was the distraction that caused her to temporarily lose focus of her surroundings. It wasn't until she heard the whizzing of a ball coming towards her that it registered that she should dodge it—though, her efforts would've most likely been futile, if not for the ball being intercepted by a certain someone.

That someone being Tenko, who caught the ball without so much as stumbling or even fumbling the ball.

Whoa.

Kaede was impressed, to say the least.

Her eyes went wide, and she could feel sweat beading down on her forehead as she heard the faint grumbles of someone leaving the field. Then, she could feel her face heat up as Tenko turned to her, face slightly sweaty, as she asked, "Are you okay?"

Kaede blinked. "Huh? Oh, Y-Yeah... Yeah, I'm fine."

"Good, because the game's not over yet!" Tenko exclaimed, pulling Kaede out the way from yet another incoming ball before tossing the ball she had in her hand to the other girl with a smile.

Right, Kaede reminded herself, and she steeled her nerves. Kaede's eyes narrowed in determination as she scanned the opposing team, calculating her next move, and being much more aware of any dodgeballs that came her way.

Jackpot. Kaede spotted someone, a girl, from the opposite team standing diagonally across from her, more focused on what was directly in front of her. Kaede used that opportunity to lob the ball at her, striking the girl in the shoulder.

Akane blew the whistle, signaling that girl was out, and Kaede couldn't help but let a small but victorious smirk graze her lips.

Things began to sail pretty smoothly for Kaede after that, as she began to play more strategically. It wasn't until someone caught her off-guard by throwing two balls at her in rapid succession that she finally got eliminated.

Kaede didn't mind much, though—she needed a break, anyway.

Kaede took her spot over at the far right of the gym, where the rest of the losing players were benched. Kaede cringed a bit as her butt touched the cold, hard floor, but she was way too tired to keep standing up.

"You okay?" a voice asked from beside her.

Kaede looked over to see Shuichi taking a seat next to her, a lopsided grin on his face. He was visibly winded from the game as well, his navy blue hair sticking to his sweaty face.

Kaede chuckled. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just tired from all that moving around."

Shuichi nodded and chuckled back. "Well, you still did pretty great out there—and you said you weren't fit for sports."

"I'm not," Kaede insisted. "That was probably just a stroke of luck out there."

"Whatever you say." Shuichi looked out towards the playing field. "Kaito and Tenko's doing pretty well, huh?"

Kaede looked over as well to observe the two—well, more so Tenko than Kaito. They were one of the few people still standing on their respective teams, focused on the game at hand. Or, was focused, as Tenko looked back and caught Kaede's eye; Tenko grinned at her, and Kaede's face began to heat up—again—as she gave a shy smile and a wave back.

Suddenly, a dodgeball from the opposite side came flying towards Tenko, and Kaede had barely opened her mouth to warn her before it collided straight in her forehead, sending her to the ground.

"Tenko!" Kaede shot up to her feet and dashed over to where she laid on the ground. "Are you okay?!"

"Y-Yeah..." Tenko groaned, a bit shaken up as she rubbed the slight bump on her forehead. "Just a scratch..."

"Come on, let's get you out of the way." Kaede put her hands under Tenko's armpits, dragging her off the playing field.

"Is she okay?" a concerned Shuichi asked as Kaede brought Tenko over.

"Yeah, I think so..." Kaede replied with a bit uncertainty in her voice, still staring at Tenko.

Tenko's slight injury didn't seem to faze her much, however, as she just crossed her arms and pouted. "Damn it, and I was so close to winning, too!"

Kaede giggled, putting a hand on her friend's shoulder. "Hey, don't worry—you still did awesome out there!"

"H-Huh?!" Tenko snapped her head back to face Kaede, a full-blown blush breaking out on her face. "N-No, you're just saying that..."

Kaede smiled brightly, which only served to fluster Tenko even more. "No, really, I'm serious! Plus, there's still a couple of rounds left, so you could make a comeback!"

Tenko seemed more energetic at that statement—even more so than usual, hopping up to her feet and blush gone. "Right! I've totally got this game in the bag! Next round, definitely!"

Shuichi silently cast a look at Kaede, who whispered back to him. "Just let her be."

The winner of the first team ended up being someone from the same team as Kaede. From there, two more rounds commenced; Kaede did relatively well during both of them, and Tenko even won the second round (and was absolutely enthusiastic about it, if the way she tackled Kaede in a celebratory hug after the round was anything to go by).

As the third round finished up, Kaede glanced up at the small clock on the wall and realized that over two hours had passed.

Luckily, that was also the final round, as Akane blew the whistle and announced that tryouts were over and that the official team would be posted on the bulletin board in a few days or so.

Kaede felt a mixture of excitement and anxiety as she changed back into her school uniform. Sure, dodgeball was kinda fun, and the possibility of playing with her friends was great, but at the same time, the thought of being physically active to that extent still daunted her. Not to mention, there was no guarantee that she would actually get in; and if she didn't, that meant it would be straight to P.E. class for her (and she already knew how she felt about that).

"Hey, Kaede!"

Kaede yelped and whipped around to face the voice, covering her chest with her arms (she was wearing a bra, but still), but lowered them once she realized who it belonged to: Tenko, who was already dressed in her school uniform.

"Tenko?! Don't scare me like that!"

"Oh crap, I'm sorry! I thought you were done changing! I didn't mean to stumble upon anything indecent!" Tenko apologized profusely as she covered her eyes with her hands.

"No, no, you're fine!" Kaede assured, putting her hands on Tenko's shoulders and glancing around the locker room to make sure no one else was around to witness Tenko embarrassing herself. "We're both girls, right? So it's not a big deal."

A sheepish smile scratched across Tenko's face as she calmed down. "Yeah... Sorry, I just wanted to ask you something."

Releasing her hands from Tenko's shoulders, Kaede replied with, "Sure, what is it?"

"Do you want to walk home together? We should do some catching up since we haven't seen each other since over the summer!"

That was true; thanks to piano recitals and aikido practice eating up Kaede and Tenko's schedules respectively, the two hadn't had much opportunity to hang out over the summer.

"Yeah, I don't mind—but Shuichi's probably coming too, since we always home together. Is that okay?"

A begrudging frown crossed Tenko's face, and she crossed her arms. "...I guess that's fine."

Kaede smiled. "Great! Let me get dressed, and I'll meet you by the gym, okay?"

If Tenko had a tail, it would definitely be waging right now, as she eagerly nodded. "Okay!"

Kaede returned her smile with of her own as Tenko left the locker room, leaving Kaede to finish putting on her uniform before grabbing her backpack and leaving the locker room, making her way back to the gymnasium, where Tenko leaned against the wall.

"Ready?" Kaede asked.

"Mm-hmm!" Tenko nodded, hoistering the straps of her bag over her shoulder.

Kaede poked her head inside the gymnasium to look for Shuichi, only to discover... he was nowhere in sight. She did a double-take before furrowing her brows and poking her head back out. "Huh, I don't see Shuichi anywhere. I guess he must've left already."

Tenko smirked. "He probably left with Kaito. You know the two have a major crush on each other."

"Right." Kaede giggled and adjusted one of her backpack straps. "I guess it's just us, then."

"Let's go!"

With that, he two girls set off towards the school's exit. When they reached it, they opened the door, only for a sudden rush of warm air from outside to send them both in a brief shock. Kaede forgot how cool it usually was inside the school—and it didn't help that summer had made its presence with a vengeance not even two weeks ago.

Kaede rubbed the goosebumps on her arm as she chuckled as she looked over at the horizon. The sun was touching it, signaling that the day was almost over, the red and golden hues emitting a bright glow over the area.

As the two began their trek outside, Tenko suddenly spoke up, remembering something. "Oh, Kaede! Did you drink any water after tryouts?"

"Huh?" Kaede mentally face-palmed; did she seriously forget to pack water while knowing she had tryouts today? Maybe the stress of trying to earn this P.E. credit was finally getting to her. "Uh, no, I forgot to pack some..."

Tenko gasped and halted in her tracks, prompting Kaede to stop as well. She zipped opened her bag and rummaged through it, retrieving a water bottle and holding it out to Kaede. "Water is important, you know! So you should drink at least half of this!"

Kaede couldn't help but be amused by Tenko's straightforwardness as she took the water bottle. "What about you, though? Isn't this your only bottle?"

"Don't worry! I always make sure to bring extra!"

Tenko tilted her bag, and Kaede saw that she did, in fact, have extra water bottles packed in there. Definitely more prepared than me, Kaede thought to herself.

"Oh. Well, thanks, Tenko." Kaede opened the bottle and drank the water inside (which was still surprisingly cool, Kaede noted.

"Mm-hmm! I have a couple of granola bars in here, too. Want one?"

Kaede nodded, and Tenko tossed her a bar before grabbing one for herself. The two began to walk again, munching on the snacks (and sipping on water, in Kaede's case).

"Do you think we're gonna make the team?" Tenko spoke again, this time through a mouthful of granola.

"I know you will," Kaede replied, taking a bite of her own granola bar and swallowing. "I'm not sure if I will, though."

Kaede could see Tenko frowning at her out of the corner of her eye. She pretended not to notice. "What?! Why would you think that?!"

Kaede sighed, pushing blonde locks behind her ear. "Eh, I did okay. It wasn't like I was the last person standing on our team, though."

"You have to give yourself more credit, you know! You still did better than, like, half of the other people back there!"

"Well, I guess we'll let the coach decide that." Kaede took one last sip from the water bottle before handing it to Tenko. "Here. I didn't finish it all, but if I drink one more drop of water, my stomach my burst," she joked.

"No worries! I'll finish it for you!" Tenko assured, before bringing the water bottle to her own lips.

"Wait, aren't you...?" Going to wipe the lid off first, is what Kaede wanted to say, but it was too late as Tenko had already gulped down the last mouthful of water, and Kaede's words died in her throat.

"Hm?" Tenko asked, wiping her face with her hand.

"...Nevermind."

"If you say so!" Oblivious to what she'd just did, Tenko slipped the now empty water bottle into her bag.

Kaede let out a breath she didn't know she had been holding, then noticed something on Tenko's uniform. "Hey, you have granola crumbs on your shirt."

"Huh?" Tenko glanced down and saw the crumbs as well. "Oh. Can you get it off for me? My hands are kinda full..." She shook the new granola bar and water she'd just retrieved out of her bag to prove her point.

"Yeah, it's no problem." As Kaede reached over, she became all too aware of how close the crumbs were to Tenko's chest. Kaede's breath caught in her throat for a second, and she immediately berated herself for it.

Why was she acting like this? She was just wiping crumbs off her friend's shirt, nothing more than that.

Kaede wiped off the crumbs and quickly retracted her hand, giving Tenko a small smile. "There you go."

"Thanks!" Tenko smiled back, and Kaede felt her heart skip a beat.

What was going on with her?

Before they know it, the two had finally reached Kaede's house, a quaint little house in a relatively small neighbourhood. Tenko's house wasn't far from hers—only about a block or so away.

"Well, we're here," Kaede said.

"Yeah..." Tenko stared at the house before looking over at Kaede. "See you tomorrow?"

Kaede looked over at Tenko and grinned. "Yeah, I'll see you tomorrow!"

The two shared a quick hug, and as Kaede opened the front door of her house, Tenko exclaimed, "Bye, Kaede! Tell your moms I said hi!"

"I will," Kaede assured, waving the other girl off. Not even a minute after closing the door behind her, a soft ding rang from inside her backpack—or, more specifically, her phone; a message had came through. It read:

tenten: GN! ILY!

As she texted back to wish Tenko a good night as well, Kaede tried to suppress the smile that was beginning to stretch across her face.

She couldn't.

Author's Note: Is it obvious I love Tenko? And Akane? fkfjgjfifkfjf my sapphic ass just really loves athletic girls rigjfkfjfhf. And Kaede and Shuichi are best friendship duo fr fr.
