In pursuit of Harvey, the man who Osvald has fixated his gaze upon so that he may take his revenge, he and Darksquad have finally arrived in Montwise, the city of scholars.

"Hey Oz, mind tellin' us a little bit about Harvey?" Peacock asked.

"For what purpose?" Osvald asked.

"Oh, y'know, we just wanna know more about 'im. Aside from the whole framing for murder thing." Peacock said.

"Peacock, be sensitive!" Noel said. "S-Sorry, we just thought…we'd learn more about Harvey's specialty in research. What kind of a scholar was he? Was he just like you?"

"No. Harvey and I… we took different paths. He took a biological approach, by studying the blood of monsters. While I studied through mathematics." Osvald said. "I was elated when we first met here in Montwise. It was during one of his lectures. After I demonstrated my own approach to the mystic arts to his students, Harvey was impressed. And from there, we hit it off. I finally found someone who thought on my level. And what's more…Harvey felt the same. We debated our theories. Each meeting resulted in impassioned discussion."

"But it was his hidden malice you didn't notice until it was too late." Laura said.

"Yes." Osvald simply answered as they eventually set foot in Montwise. "We've arrived."

"Alright, now lets see… if any of us were an evil, powerful magic-obessed Scholar, where would we hide?" DW asked.

"You even have to ask? Why don't we try hitting the books at the library?" Linne asked.

"We're not here to read, Linne." Hyde said.

"I know we're not, you idiot. Harvey must have a secret hidden laboratory somewhere inside Montwise's library. We just have to find it, then we'll be able to see what kind of experiments he's been doing…and how far he's gone in the five years since he's ruined Osvald's life." Linne explained.

"But how are we going to find where the lab is?" Mai asked.

"Perhaps I shall put those in the building under some scrutiny to find out." Osvald said.

The group then entered the Library, checking around to see if anyone knew anything. Osvald soon scrutinized one particular particular scholar, and found out that Harvey spent a lot of time around the shelves of the library's second basement. They found the particular shelf, and revealed a hidden passageway in the wall that lead to their destination.

The first thing the group laid their eyes upon inside Harvey's secret lab were four glass tubes containing green liquid, with some kind of creatures inside them. Strange and amalgamated.

"So this is Harvey's laboratory…" Osvald said.

"What are these creatures in those capsules?" Jin asked.

"Whatever they are, they're not normal beasts."

"Chimeras." Laura said.

"Like the ones from Greek mythology?" Makoto asked.

"No, I'm afraid it's worse than that. It seems Harvey is partaking in a forbidden practice to create new monsters using their blood." Laura said.

"He's combining creatures to create new varieties. As you said Laura, this kind of study is forbidden. He mixes the blood of monsters in attempts to create even stronger magical abominations. He presumes this will lead him to the One True Magic, and so he worked on it in secret. That said…I've never seen chimeras like these before." Osvald said.

"Hey, so you haven't exactly told us how t'get this One True Magic stuff." Peacock pointed out.

"Apologies. In theory, obtaining the One True Magic requires Seven Sources. The first six, directly come from the six known elements of magic." Osvald said.

"Fire, Ice, Lightning, Light, Darkness and Wind, right?" Hyde asked. "So what's the last one?"

"Neither Harvey or myself know. We've spent years researching but still haven't found any leads." Osvald said.

Laura was silent as she had a troubled expression.

"Something wrong, Laura?" Ragna asked.

"The Seventh Source, what if…it depends on the person who desires the One True Magic?" Laura asked. "If Harvey is attempting to obtain it, then, perhaps for him, the Seventh Source would be a person's blood if they are the descendants of a powerful mystic."

"What would that have to do with him betraying Osvald?" DW typed.

"...I'm not sure." Laura admitted. "There must be a connection, but…it eludes us for now."

"Why… I wonder…" Osvald said. "My breast should be aflame with the thought of vengeance. And yet even now, I… I yearn to read his theories… How odd."

Just then three of the tubes shattered as the chimeras broke free.

"Guess they heard you, Ossy. They're giving us a hands-on demonstration!" DW typed.

"Hm… they're quite something." Osvald admitted.

The three chimeras inched closer to the group.

"You see us as your enemies? Then so be it." Osvlad said. "I suppose we'll evaluate the results of Harvey's research ourselves."

With that, the group engaged in battle with the three chimeras. Each one had their own specific weaknesses, and they weren't that hard to destroy. After disposing of the creatures, the group ventured deeper into the lab before they heard someone coming.

"You and your new assistants have kept me waiting, Osvald!" a voice said, as out from the light stepped Harvey himself. He wore a large black cloak with a long caped along with a goatee and a red combover drooping down one side of his face.

"Harvey..!" Osvald said.

"I didn't think you'd make it. You've all earned passing marks." Harvey said.

"Spare us your false grades. You know why we've come here, and with Osvald with us." Linne asked.

"Yes, yes, there is much to say, but first, a question. Did you understand the thrust of my research prior to your arrival?" Harvey asked.

"In the abstract. I see that you have overcome a major hurdle…with the help of my formulae." Osvald said as Harvey laughed.

"And for that, my friend. I thank you. I have stolen your research and made it my own! I finally have fame and recognition!" Harvey said.

"All through forbidden practices and violation of the creatures of this world!" Laura said.

"And all unknown to the public eye, and while Osvald was shivering on Frigit isle, eating whatever chilled slop they gave him!" Harvey laughed. "Painful, is it not, Osvald?! Everything that was once yours is now mine! I have it all!"

"You could've just stolen his research and gotten famous just by doing that. But why did you have to go so far as to take his family away from him?" Orie demanded.

"Hehe… Think, inquisitor. The critical mind is our 'source,' if you will." Harvey said before holding his right hand up as a dark aura emanated from it before the sound of thudding steps alerted the group as they turned to their left and saw a large white golem with dark flames inside it stomping forward.

"What is this?!" Osvald as the golem brought its arms down towards him and Darksquad. Thankfully, the group was able to get out of the way just in time. But as Laura landed, she sensed something that made her shocked.

"This golem is… no! You monster!" Laura said.

"Laura, what's up?"

"Harvey has deceived us all. He never truly murdered Osvald's wife and daughter." Laura said.

"What?!" Osvald said.

"Your wife's soul…is in that monster!" Laura said.

"Rita is…? But…she's dead… the fire…" Osvald said.

"Your friend speaks the truth, Osvald. You found a corpse at the scene, but it was not her corpse. 'Twas that of another! Goodness, no, she didn't burn. I abducted her. I needed her blood, you see." Harvey said.

Myyy…deee…arrr

"Is that… really you, darling?" Osvald asked in disbelief.

"Yes, Osvald! It's Rita, your beloved wife! And I made this creature with her blood!" Harvey laughed.

"This is seriously messed up." Kokonoe said.

(Cue: In Pursuit of Revenge ~ Raphael- Drakengard 3)

"You monster… how could you…?" Osvald said. "How far will you fall, Harvey?!"

"As far as I need to, if it means finding the answer! Now, see for yourselves the product of my research!" Harvey said.

"Oh we will, jackass. But you're gonna be really disappointed when we tear your creation apart!" Kokonoe said as everyone got ready to fight.

A Lover Made a Monster

Grieving Golem

"Kokonoe, whadda we got on this thing?" DW typed.

"It's weak to Light Magic, Spears, Wind and Staves. But we have to be fast. If we're too slow, it'll change its weak spots in the middle of the fight." Kokonoe said.

"So hit it hard and fast? That's just my style." Hitomi said.

"I'll go first! Orie, follow behind me!" Mai said.

"Yes!" Orie said as the two charged in.

Mai dashed forward before following up with a spear thrust from three different directions.

"Thanatos!" Orie called, summoning her EXS as it swung its sword downward before following up with two spin slashes and finishing with an upward swing.

"Nine, blow em away!" DW typed.

"Malachite of Malice!" Nine called, blasting the golem with a horizontal air stream, stunning it.

"Here's what I think of your research, Harvey!" Kokonoe said. "I summon you, Golden Tager!" she called, summoning a giant version of Tager. "Burn in hell!" the golem was then blasted with a powerful laser, crumbling it to pieces.

"Not much of a perfect experiment after all." DW typed.

(End song)

"So Laura, think we'll be able to salvage Rita's soul from this thing?" Haruto asked.

"No, unfortunately. Rita was not in this monstrosity." Laura said.

"She's right. Harvey's merely given her blood to this…thing. It lacks her soul." Osvald said.

"Ehehe… yes, there are the powers of observation I admire! Well done!" Harvey said.

"Rita was already long dead before we even came here, wasn't she?" Linne asked.

"Of course. She'd served her purpose." Harvey said.

"Forgive me, Rita. I brought this upon you." Osvald said.

"Well, well. Even you have a heart." Harvey mocked.

Kokonoe then inspected the remains of the grieving golem, and found a piece left of the purple ooze that seeped from it.

"What kind of source is this? Don't think I've ever seen anything like it. It's darkness in solid form, but… it's mixed with some unknown compound I can't identify." Kokonoe said.

"That… is the answer." Harvey said. "I've found it at last. The Seventh Source."

"You're telling me that black stuff you filled that golem with is the last piece to find the One True Magic? Get off your high horse." DW typed.

"So, you don't know, then? That creature was born of the blood of the Lumina family. Rita Lumina. Her family is known as the Lineage of Light. And, as you well know, Osvald… bright light gives birth to the darkest shadows. The power of the Shadow."

"The Shadow…" Osvald said.

"I spent countless hours and no small amount of effort trying to ascertain its location. Imagine my surprise when it turned out to be your wife! What nonsense is fate…" Harvey said. "With that knowledge in hand, I took your research and family from you…"

"If you used Rita's blood to make a monster… then what did you do with Elena?" 2B asked.

"Hahaha… What do you think I did?" Harvey asked.

"Papa…?" a voice asked as a small girl stepped out of the shadows. "Papa!"

"Elena… Is that you? Ohhh… You're alive… It's me…" Osvald said as he walked towards her and held his arms out. "Come…" he said as Elena was silent before running past him and towards Harvey.

"What the hell…?!" Ragna said.

"Are you hurt, Papa?" Elena asked Harvey.

"I'm fine, Elena. You had better worry about the man over there, I think." Harvey said as Elena looked at Osvald before turning back to Harvey.

"Who…is that…?" Elena asked.

"Elena…" Osvald mumbled.

"Memory manipulation." Laura said.

"When Harvey said he took his wife and daughter from Oz… he wasn't kidding." DW typed.

"Did I not warn you against entering my laboratory, Elena?" Harvey asked.

"I'm sorry… You didn't come home. I was worried." Elena said.

"Laura…are you saying Harvey manipulated my daughter's memories?" Osvald asked.

"Yes. She now believes Harvey is her father. Or perhaps he is you." Laura said. "How horrible. To think he'd do even this."

Harvey and Elena walked up the stairs from where the former came.

"Elena, I'm about to conduct a very important experiment. One that, as it happens, involves you. I will show you later." Harvey said.

"Yes, Papa." Elena said.

"I've taken Elena in to raise as my own. And like your friend has declared. I've taken the liberty of altering her memories, just a bit." Harvey said.

"What are you saying?!" Osvald demanded.

"Oh, don't worry. It's nothing more than I do in my experiments on the monsters." Harvey said.

"I only see one monster here." Laura said. "A man such as you is beyond redemption."

"Now, as you all saw, Rita was a failure. Fortunately, Elena's blood is even better than her mothers. This time, I shall find it! I shall find the One True Magic!" Harvey declared.

"Wait! Harvey, no! No!" Osvald said as Harvey left with Elena, Darksquad too slow to stop him.

Elena…

Elena's alive…

At last, a modicum of peace for my ragged heart. No doubt because I've lost half the reason to enact my revenge. Yet at the same time…

The fire in my breast burns ever brighter.

It was now nightfall as Osvald and Darksquad stood near the town's entrance.

"We swear to you, Osvald. We will help get Elena back." Laura said as she put a hand on his shoulder.

"Only question is, where did that bastard run off to?" Ragna asked.

"He called Rita and Elena's bloodline the Lineage of Light. D'arqest pursued that line of research, among others. Which means there's only one place he could be… Gravell. The resting place of the archmage himself." Osvald said. "We must head to the Wildlands, with haste."

"We'll see about getting there fast. And this ain't about revenge anymore. What happens to Harvey after this? Hell if we know. But there's only one thing that matters now. " DW typed.

"Yes. The time for revenge has passed. But I've made up my mind. I know what must be done. We will get Elena back. I swear it." Osvald said. "You'll help me get my daughter back, won't you, Darksquad?"

"...Course we will." DW typed.

"You have our word." Kido added.

"...Thank you. All of you." Osvald said, a slight smile under his beard.

She lives. Elena, Osvald's precious daughter, lives!

In an instant Osvald's priorities are rearranged, and life itself gives brand-new meaning. A tiny light flickers in the dim purgatory of his existence. Now in order, to save his daughter, Osvald and Darksquad light out for unfamiliar territories one last time.
