Hey all! Sorry for the disgraceful break! Law school man. Again, none of this belongs to me other than my OCs. Hopefully this isn't too atrocious.
Chapter 4- Truth
I woke up the next day and repeated the same routine from the previous day. I did notice that Violet wasn't quite up yet even though she was up earlier than me yesterday. I figured getting up early was a first day thing and not an everyday thing unlike myself. I was just an early bird. After I got dressed, I put my books for Transfiguration, Defense Against the Dark Arts, and Herbology in my bag. That night I also had Astronomy, which I was not looking forward to, constellations had never been easy for me to find. Transfiguration sounded fascinating and Herbology would be helpful for potions.
When I made it to the Great Hall, I decided to grab some waffles and strawberries; I was a little disappointed that there wasn't any whipped cream. I sat in the hall and thought about the letter I had wrote last night. The post started to come, and I looked around to see if by some miracle my mum had received and replied to my letter already. It would hopefully explain about my mother's past and explain what happened to me. Unfortunately, no dice. Violet was shaping up to be my best friend and I didn't know how to feel about her past. As I was pondering my situation, Fred and George decided to scare me by grabbing my shoulders and yelling "BOO!", on instinct I turned around and slapped whoever it was, it turned out to be George who responded with, "Well, it turns out we have a violent one, eh Fred?", Fred just nodded, absolutely stunned. I couldn't see why though, if you go around scaring people you should expect to get slapped at some point. They sat on my left side and chatted about some brilliant pranks they were planning to spring on Lee, and some nastier ones they planned on the Slytherins. A few minutes later, Violet came down and sat down on my right and grabbed her choice breakfast of bacon and eggs. We chatted about the coming day a bit, finished and headed to Transfiguration, Fred and George followed us as well. The other girls must not have been early risers, because they were just making it to breakfast.
Transfiguration passed uneventfully as well as DADA and Herbology. In Transfiguration, McGonagall discussed the difficulty and theory behind changing one thing into another, about how you had to strongly envision what you wanted your subject to turn into. She had us start with matches into needles, and I managed to get it silver, but beyond that was a struggle. We were required to practice this as homework. DADA went over the subjects we were going to cover that year, less dangerous dark creatures, and simple jinxes. Herbology would be helpful in potions as it turned out. Many of the plants we would be growing will be ingredients in potions we would brew, and we would study the qualities that make them useful.
After classes were over, Violet and I made our way over to the lake. We sat down and practiced the levitation charm with small rocks and skipping them over the lake. It took a few tries to get it right, but when we got the hang of the spell it was quite fun and created a competition to see how far and the number of skips the person could get. So far Violet was one ahead of me with 6 jumps in a row. After that, I dug out the box of matches I swiped from class, and we went through the whole box until we both could accomplish the match to needle spell. We were so exhausted and happy afterwards that we just giggled and headed into dinner. That night we were having Shepherd's pie and apple tart. I sat down on the bench at the Gryffindor table and helped myself to the food. I turned to Violet and said, "So, before the twins get here, what kind of prank should we pull on them? I feel like we should build up a store of ideas so that when they pull something on us, we can easily return the favor".
"Brilliant! I know itching powder in clothes is a common one. Do you think we could ask some of the older students to teach us a color changing charm so that we could change their hair or skin color?" asked Violet.
"Maybe! Better to ask them than Flitwick, he would ask too many questions about why we wanted to learn that charm", I pointed out.
"Good point", she said.
"What's a good point?" asked George, plopping down on my right.
"Oh, just asking McGonagall for more help on that spell. I just can't seem to get it", I said, quickly covering up our real conversation.
"No plotting then?"
"Absolutely not, that's your area, wouldn't want to step on any toes." I returned to my food. Tomorrow morning was going to be rough. Getting up early after Astronomy at midnight was going to kill me. Violet pulled me along by the sleeve to the common room after dinner. We sat down by the fire and pulled out the Astronomy book to get a sense of the first lesson. After, we went up to the rooms to take a nap before midnight.
The blaring alarm went off at 11pm and I wanted to throw it. I walked over to Violet and shook her awake. We went downstairs and greeted Fred and George. We walked out to the roof with them where Professor Sinistra had set up telescopes for class.
By the time class was finished I was dead on my feet, however, a letter that was on my bed when I got back woke me up. It was from my mother.
My Darling Elara,
I always wondered when this day would come. I suppose it makes sense that it would be when you got to school. Well, as you might remember, when Bellatrix and Narcissa captured you, they kept you under threat of death and torture if I did not give them information. And even though I fed some information to Dumbledore on the actions of the Death Eaters, it will never account for the fact I had to betray my closest of friends. I realize that many would die for their friends, but you were the last thing I had left. Please don't hold it against me.
Love,
Mom
