Kayla walked around New York while looking at the brochure in her hand. She knows she could have asked for directions but due to her withdrawal towards other people, she's slightly nervous but she was just glad to be able to get a brochure to point her in the direction but now apparently, she's lost in Times Square.
"Finding a hotel is a lot harder like a needle in a haystack." She muttered.
Looks like she'll have to ask for directions. Putting the brochure in her bag, she went out to find someone who could point out which direction to go to find a hotel or apartment complex. After a few minutes of asking around, she finally got the directions she needed and headed in the direction of the apartment complex.
She got her room key with a bit of trouble due to the receptionist being around her age or a year older who was flirting only to have grown up to apologize for their son's behavior and gave her the room key. She took the elevator while putting on her headphones to play some music.
She arrived on the fourth floor and exited the elevator and headed to her room before entering. The whole place was a simple set up. A living room complete with furniture, even a flat screen TV, a kitchen, two bedrooms, a bathroom and a window with a fire escape. She put her stuff in the first bedroom and lay down on the bed.
First day at a new place and she's already tired but she still has a few more hours before going out to buy herself some food. The Sparks Twins gave her some of their money since they practically owned their own manor back at Canterlot and that their parents entrusted their inheritance to them once they reached the right age.
So she just started to clean the whole place a bit while putting her clothes in the drawers and cabinets to make the whole place a bit more homey to her. After that, she just watched some movies on TV. Right now, she's watching High School Musical and she couldn't help but relate to one of the characters.
She checked the clock and noticed that it was already 8:30 pm. So she turned off the TV and went out of her room after locking the door to buy some food. She knows a grocery store near the apartment so it will be a few minutes walk from where she's staying. Kayla got out of the building and shivered a little from the cool night. For a city, New York is a bit chilly at night.
Kayla arrived at the store and grabbed a basket to buy what she needed.
"But, mommy! I want that one!" A child's voice whined which made her look.
"Now, now, sweetie. You know we can't afford it. We can only afford what we need with the little money that we have." A mother said.
She looked over and saw that it was a woman in her late 30s and was with a baby and a 5 year old child.
"B-But..." The child pouted and she followed the kid's eyes to where the kid was looking and saw that she was looking longingly at a hot chocolate dispenser.
From the looks of their clothes, she could tell they're having a hard life. So she might as well help them and hopefully, make new friends.
"Um, excuse me?" She approached them and the kid hid behind her mother's leg.
"Oh, good evening, dear. I hope we didn't disturb you." The woman said but Kayla just smiled politely at them.
"It's okay, miss. I couldn't help but notice that you're buying food as well." Kayla said as she noticed the basket and only saw a loaf of bread and milk.
"Oh yes. We ran out of food but with little money, that's all I can afford." The woman said.
Kayla pursed her lips before having a light bulb.
"If it's not too much trouble, I'd like to help you." She offered.
"O-Oh my. Are you sure, dear? We don't want you to waste your money on poor folks like us." The woman said.
"I insist. I'm actually new here and helping folks is what my friends and parents taught me." Kayla said with a warm smile which the woman returned.
"Thank you, dear."
The little group went on to buy their necessities and went to the cashier to pay for it. She paid for their groceries when she forgot something.
"Oh! Wait here!"
She ran off somewhere as the kid and mother watched with curiosity. After a minute or so, she came back with two cups of warm chocolate.
"Here. I noticed she wanted some so I thought why not." Kayla said with a kind smile as she gave the cups to the mother and child.
"Oh my. This is too much. How can we ever repay you?" The woman said tearfully.
"You don't have to pay me back. I'm just glad to help folks like you." She said as she picked up her bags and knelt down to the child.
"What's your name?" She asked.
"A-August." The little girl, August, said shyly while sipping her hot chocolate.
"Well, August. I wish you and your mother good luck. I left a little surprise in one of the bags. Make sure you are a good big sister to your mother and baby sister, alright?" She said as August smiled brightly and nodded.
Kayla smiled back and picked up her groceries.
"Thank you, miss!" August shouted happily.
The mother smiled softly as she sipped her hot chocolate before noticing something in one of their grocery bags. She looked inside and was in shock. There was a thick bundle of cash hidden in some vegetables. She looked to where the young teen walked and smiled thankfully.
"Thank you, my dear." She said as she and her children went home.
Kayla held the bags of groceries near her chest as she walked down the sidewalk. For some reason, tonight is making her nervous yet excited but she doesn't know what. The sound of footsteps behind her made her pause and she looked over her shoulder but found no one. So she just resumed her walk home but the footsteps came again and she broke into a run with the owner of the footsteps following her.
She ran into an alley and hid behind some dumpster and waited until the person following her ran past. She didn't dare to breathe since she was nervous and scared that the person or stalker was still there. After a few moments, she didn't hear anything and got up slowly only for a hand to cover her mouth which muffled her cries of fear and surprise.
"Look at what we got here, boys." A voice laughed and she started to shake in fear as she realized that two more men appeared.
"Looks like she's a newbie." One of them laughed as she struggled to get away but froze when a sharp edge pressed against her neck.
"We'll let you go if you hand over all of your stuff to us, girlie. And don't try screaming for help either." The first guy threatened and tears pricked her eyes.
'Someone! Help me!' She screamed in her head while shutting her eyes in fear.
"Is that anyway to treat a lady, gentlemen?" A voice asked in a joking manner.
That made everyone look to where the voice came from only to see a silhouette hiding in the dark.
"What does it look like to you, buddy? We're mugging this pretty face." The guy holding said sharply.
But the owner of the voice just chastised him as if talking to a child.
"From what I can see. You're hurting seƱorita here, amigo." The voice said and sparks started to appear where he was and Kayla took note of the red and yellow glowing marks as well as molten golden eyes.
