Kiryu slowly opened his eyes as light tickled his face. His body felt numb and cold, and his heart wept. He never felt so disgusted with himself in his life. Kiryu wanted so much to crawl into a hole and stay there. A light shake and a soft, firm voice snapped him out of his dark thoughts.
"Kiryu! Snap out of it, man!" Yusei stared down at his wounded comrade in his arms. "Come on, open your eyes!"
Kiryu turned his head and realized that Yusei was holding him in his arms. More guilt washed over Kiryu's heart when he stared into Yusei's blue eyes that had pain, sadness, and regret.
"Are you alright?!" Yusei asked concern and fear laced in his voice. He knew it was a dumb question. When Kiryu opened his eyes, Yusei saw that his friend and leader were normal.
Kiryu's heart melted, and for the first time, he felt warmth in his shattered heart. A soft smile made its way to Kiryu's lips, and Yusei saw love in his eyes for the first time.
"I do feel a lot better. Thank you, Yusei. I'm sorry for all the pain I caused you ..." Kiryu murmured, touching Yusei's stomach, where he severely injured Yusei during their first duel. Kiryu stared into Yusei's eyes as he felt Yusei's heart. "And all the hurtful things I said to you. You're not a traitor ..."
Yusei blinked. "Yeah. But it was my fault you turned out this way!" A tear slid down Yusei's cheek. Another feeling came over Yusei when he noticed that the life in his friend's eyes was starting to fade. Kiryu was dying. "Come on! I'm getting you some help!"
Kiryu just smiled. He was tired but also felt warmth and love in his heart. "You don't need to do that. You've helped me enough, Yusei. I see that now. You tried to save me then, but I held onto so much hate - I didn't see why you stopped me - but I do now. It's because you're a good person, Yusei ..."
Fear and anxiety radiated off Yusei's body as he shook his head, tears streaming down his flushed cheeks. His heart pounded painfully in his chest. "Stop this, Kiryu! I'll find a way to heal you!"
Kiryu chuckled softly. "You typical moron," he tried to joke. "You did." He gently held Yusei's hand and placed it over his own heart. "Right here."
Yusei felt Kiryu's heart slow, and the outcome was not how he wanted things to end between him and Kiryu.
"You can't leave us like this! Not when there's so much work to be done! We need - I need you!"
Kiryu's expression softened. He took Yusei's hand and kissed it. "That's sweet of you, but you don't need me ..." his eyes started to grow heavy, and his voice became softer. "You're a signer now ... and I'm proud to say that I love you ..." Kiryu closed his eyes, and his head rolled to the side.
Fresh tears slid down Yusei's cheeks, and a mournful scream came from the back of his throat. He held Kiryu's lifeless body, rocking back and forth. "Why, Kiryu!? Why tell me that now when you could've told me that a long time ago?" He stared down, and new bound hate grew in Yusei's heart. He leaned in and kissed Kiryu on the lips. "I'm going to get revenge on Rudger," he murmured. "I won't let your death go in vain."
The End
