Compelling truthful responses from others made people wary of being around Shin. So donning the Shie Hassaikai's plague doctor mask was just him completing the separation voluntarily.

The yakuza were the closest Shin had come to mutual trust. Plus, Overhaul never prevaricated with him, so aligning under his banner made sense. Being in his boss' confidence gave Shin a sense of self-worth that went to his head, though.

He wasn't a frontline fighter, but such was his devotion that Shin followed Overhaul willingly into battle. He never asked if they could win; he didn't want to hear the lie.
