R-01: Coup d'Etat
Date: July 6, 2026. Vergil wanders to an unknown and possibly abandoned city. In the distance lies a woman with pink hair and a cybernetic body from the neck down. Vergil approaches the woman. Vergil claims the woman to be a regular human.
Woman: So you have finally arrived, "Jack The Ripper."
Vergil: Are you, perhaps, referring to "Raiden?"
The woman is taken aback, expecting Raiden to speak.
Woman: Oh? A new face?
Vergil: My name is Vergil; the superior and older son of Sparda.
Woman: My name is Mistral. I suppose you want information about Raiden; Isn't that right?
Vergil: Give that to me.
Mistral: For that, sorry will do. Sundowner told me about your encounter with him and Raiden before he was assassinated by an unknown perpetrator. This is the real world; you must have your OWN information about him. Haven't you learned not to plagiarize and cheat in school?
Vergil: Well I want yours, too.
Mistral: Perhaps, maybe I, myself, can give you a better time than that fucker.
Vergil: What are you getting at?
Mistral: Maybe I can give you what all of the men in this world want. In fact, you'll enjoy it so much, you'll never want to leave.
Vergil: Stay out of my way.
Mistral: Why is that?
Vergil: My main goal is to gain power, the power that can defeat my twin brother, Dante-
Mistral: I lost my whole family. My family's killers… I butchered those fuckers-
Vergil: That's none of my concern. Speak. Now.
Mistral, frustrated and feeling threatened, begins to speak.
Mistral: FINE! RAIDEN IS A CYBORG WHO PROTECTS THE WEAK!
Vergil: Is there something missing?
Mistral: What?
Vergil: Perhaps, he protects himself?
Mistral doesn't realize Vergil's mocking toward Raiden.
Mistral: What are you talking about?
Vergil: Foolish and brainless girl. This "Raiden" protects himself because he protects the weak. So in conclusion, this makes Raiden a weakling.
Vergil, knowing this is true, chuckles at how weak Raiden is compared to Vergil. (Raiden is Building Class while Vergil is Complex Multiversal Class).
Vergil: Get out of my sight.
Mistral: … Fine! I'm leaving! Thanks for nothing, "boy!"
Vergil: Farewell.
Vergil walks to a refinery factory. Vergil stops walking when he reaches the entrance.
Vergil: It begins.
Vergil enters the factory. Vergil approaches a door locked by a control panel.
Control Panel: Enter security code.
Vergil tries to guess the code. He enters "76937."
Control Panel: Access denied! Enter security code.
Vergil: Impossible!
Vergil tries "6684828466"
Control Panel: Access denied! Enter security code.
Vergil gets frustrated and yells in anger.
Vergil: Damn you…!
Vergil draws his Yamato. All of a sudden, a voice calls out to him.
?: Who are you?
Vergil turns around to see a familiar face from three weeks ago. It appears to be the Brazilian Samurai: Sam.
Vergil: You showed up.
Vergil sheathes the Yamato.
Sam: Going somewhere, ah? Are you trying to compensate for something?
Vergil: Yes. Your incompetence.
Sam: You do not know me.
Vergil: Foolishness. I seem to recall YOU fighting Raiden on the train 3 weeks ago.
Sam: I want him to take revenge.
Vergil: Revenge, for a foe?
Samuel: Just like how I took revenge on a Brazilian drug cartel all by myself. Almost took it down, too.
Vergil: It seems we have something partially in common. I, myself, took revenge on my twin brother, Dante.
Samuel: Is that cause just? Or is that what your mind tells you?
Vergil: I had a job that must be done. And that was to defeat my twin brother. Now that I've finally got my revenge, I have no use for fighting him.
Sam: *sighs* Forget it. We both heard enough from each other by now. What Desperado wants me to do, is the opposite of what I want to do.
Vergil: Explain what this "Desperado" is.
Sam: Desperado is a corrupt military enforcement. Their main goal is to start a war, mainly trying to get back on track of what a group called the "Patriots" started.
Vergil: Start a war over what? Pointless.
Sam: The Patriots thought war was good for the economy. As of now, you have not told me your name. May I ask?
Vergil: The name is Vergil. Son of Sparda.
Sam: Well, 'Vergil,' Desperado wants me to have a little 'chat' with you.
Sam proceeds to walk with Vergil deeper into the city. The surroundings show an abandoned city with a ferris wheel. Sam draws his sword. Vergil smirks a bit and holds the Yamato up (still sheathed). Vergil uses his thumb to partially draw the Yamato, just like in his fight with Dante.
Sam: How long can you last?
Vergil takes a step forward and disappears. Sam gasps and looks around the area. As Sam gets frustrated, Vergil appears behind him.
Vergil: Here I am.
The two clash their swords together. Sam uses all of his strength against Vergil. Vergil, on the other hand, doesn't even need to use his power or strength.
Vergil: Defeating you like this, has no meaning.
Sam: *grunts* What… What the hell are you?
Vergil: But soon, you shall know this devil's power. A power greater than you ever imagined. The power of a son of Sparda.
Vergil kicks Sam slightly into the air and whacks him with the Yamato's scabbard, knocking him back tremendously. Sam breaks through a concrete wall of a building.
Sam: Fuck!
Vergil performs 3 rapid slashes.
Vergil: Too slow. Try and keep up. Scum.
Sam, overwhelmed, makes a run for it. Vergil stays there, allowing him to run away.
Vergil (yelling to Sam): Get strong. After that, we'll settle the matter, Sam.
A mysterious figure approaches the arena from the alleyway.
?: Hey, are you part of Dolzaev's men?
Vergil begins to mouth some words. What he says involves something with a "ride."
- (a few moments earlier)
It appears to be storming over the ocean. Hovering over the ocean, towards the AO is a futuristic aircraft. Inside the aircraft lies an unfamiliar body, but a familiar voice.
Boris (on codec) How is it, Raiden?
Raiden, in a new cybernetic body and missing the left eye (covered by a camera), talks to Boris.
Raiden: So far, so good. I've got a clean visual.
Boris: A direct feed to your optic nerve. Yes, I should hope, eh? I mean… how does it feel!? To fly like a bird!
Raiden: Like a bird strapped to a remote-control rocket…
Boris (via codec): We will get you in safely, tovarich. Just relax and enjoy the ride.
Raiden: Right.
Doktor, the one who developed Raiden's new body, joins the codec call.
Doktor: Can you hear me, Raiden?
Raiden: Doktor.
Doktor: Remember the two procedures to maintain your new body: One, seizing nano-repair units from your foes. And two-Absorbing their electrolytes.
Raiden: I got it.
Doktor: Yes, enemy cyborgs should provide plenty of MCFC electrolytes once you slice them open and... extract their fluids.
Raiden: They're terrorists. I was planning on that anyway.
Doktor: Oh, and their left hands, if you please.
Raiden: Excuse me?
Doktor gets up from his chair and walks across a table full of left arms. Doktor grabs a cybernetic left arm.
Doktor: Their combat data, stored on holographic memory, typically located in the left hand. That data is very valuable. Ehem... I am authorized to offer you upgrades and services in exchange for it.
Raiden: How generous.
Doktor: Ich liebe Kapitalismus! [I love capitalism!] Had the wall come down a few years earlier, I would have a Nobel Prize on my shelf.
Raiden: -There, I see land.
Courtney, along with Kevin, joins the codec call.
Courtney: Three mikes out and closing. No activity at the air base. Looks like we don't need to worry about interceptors.
Kevin: Great, then we have time for a quick briefing.
Raiden: I know you miss me, Kev, but I've been all over the materials.
Kevin (via codec): That's what you said before Montenegro. Look, just humor me, buddy. Objectives, of course, are enter Abkhazia, neutralize the terrorists, and restore the rightful government… or what's left of it, anyway. The president and most of the cabinet have been killed, and a military junta's been established. The terrorists brain-jacked all the high-ranking officers, and their cyborgs scattered the rank-and-file. The few leaders who survived have no way of openly opposing the now regime. That's why they called us.
Boris: Andrey Dolzaev, leader of the occupation forces. An extremist, linked to both the St. Petersburg massacre of 2015, and last year's terror spree in Georgia. And his arms supplier? None other than Desperado Enforcement, LLC.
Raiden: N'mani's killers…
Kevin: If we don't stop them here, they could destabilize the entire region. But our more immediate problem… is Jetstream Sam. I believe you've met.
Raiden: The only problem I see is that nickname. I've got my enhancements this time. He won't be an issue.
Kevin: He may not even be in-country, but keep an eye out just in-
Boris is twisting his face. Unease settles as Kevin remembers Raiden has recently lost an eye.
Kevin: Oh… Uh… sorry.
Raiden: Ready for insertion.
Raiden jumps out of the jet in style and lands on the shore, showing off his new outfit in all its glory. He turns his visor off, revealing his right eye (glowing red for a few seconds).
Boris: Raiden, you landed safely, da? [yes?] First, head inland. The waypoint is marked on your soliton radar. Contact us on codec if you have questions.
Raiden uses ninja run to run up the stairs from the beach to the city. Raiden stops in his tracks, sensing danger in its course. Out of nowhere, three enemy cyborgs pop out of thin air, landing on the ground and pulling machetes out.
Boris: The bastards are using stealth camo to ambush you. Nice try, but it won't do any good against a state-of-the-art cyborg like you, eh? To parry incoming hits, throw out your own barrage of light attacks while your foe is on the offensive!
Raiden, having new abilities along with his new body, used Zandatsu to focus on the enemy, slowing down time partially. His optic nerve's modifications detect and show Raiden the weak points. Raiden slices the weak points with his sword and rips out their nano-repair units from the enemies and absorbs them, due to his body lacking nano-repairs.
After all three cyborgs are defeated, Raiden stands there, impressed by his new body. His new HF blade and right arm both cackle with lightning. Kevin calls Raiden via codec.
Kevin: Had your fill?
Raiden: With this body, I could take these guys with no eyes. Intel wasn't exaggerating on the cyborg count.
Kevin: Well, you know how fast the tech's been spreading these last few years. That CNT muscle fiber packs the power of a jackhammer into every limb. What enterprising soldier of fortune could resist? And cyborgs are still human... real, thinking people. Way less risk of collateral damage than your typical UAV strike.
Courtney joins the codec call.
Courtney: And don't forget the PR angle. Nations start playing Frankenstein with their troops, and the public goes nuts; PMCs, on the other hand, are off the ethical radar,
Kevin: Yeah, they still don't even count PMCs in official death tolls. With SOP out of the picture, private militaries needed a new edge on the market. We got it.
Courtney: In a way, cyborgs are just SOP troops by another name, only all muscled up and less predictable.
Kevin: But it makes you wonder… Where'd Desperado find these guys?
Raiden: I'm not complaining. They're like walking vending machines.
Kevin: Right. Vending machines full of blood... *does a vampire pose* WHAH! Easy there, Dracula. Like I said, they're still people.
Raiden: People who terrorize and take innocent lives for money. They sowed their fate when they took this job. I'm just the reaper.
Kevin: Damn... Bit cold, Raiden. Even for you. Anyway... Uh, it's cool. Let's get to work. Time to increase the peace.
Raiden: Right.
Kevin and Courtney hang up the codec call. Raiden enters a dilapidated building. Boris calls Raiden on codec.
Boris: Raiden, this is Boris. Give me your status.
Raiden: Looks clear. No one in sight.
Boris: Good. Let's recap the route you will take. As I said, the enemy's HQ is in the refinery along the coastline. Dolzaev has been spotted there using satellite photography... Also on-site: Mistral, a Desperado captain.
Raiden: So I go through the city, cross the bridge into the old town, then head down to the rear of the refinery.
Boris: Still, I think they anticipate us. They will probably have a grand reception awaiting you at the old city. Do not let your guard down.
Boris hangs up the codec call. Raiden hops over a stack of containers and wooden crates, which lead up to the 2nd floor. Raiden heads for the second floor exit, located after a corridor. As he approaches the lower corridor, a hostile cyborg blocks the way, facing parallel to Raiden.
Boris (via codec): Hostiles in the lower corridor, I see. Try to flank them, or approach them from behind.
Raiden attacks from behind, stabbing the soldier and performing a Zandatsu.
Boris (via codec): Excellent Raiden!
Raiden exits the corridor, leading to an outside balcony. Boris calls Raiden on codec.
Boris: Raiden, take that main thoroughfare. You can use Augment Mode to see where the enemy is located. Your body analyzes radar and IR data to construct your AR display. Some civilians are still in the city. That is not good…
Boris hangs up the codec call. Raiden sees a civilian held at gunpoint by two hostile cyborgs. They seem to be questioning him.
Hostile Cyborg: What are you doing here? This area's off-limits!
Civilian: What? No, I am not doing anything!
Raiden uses ninja run to sneak up on the soldiers. Raiden uses Blade Mode to zandatsu the soldiers. The other soldiers nearby see this and attempt to fight Raiden using rocket launchers and machetes. Raiden kills the other cyborgs.
Boris (on codec): He is scared to death, Raiden! Let him know he's safe.
Raiden lets the civilian know he is safe.
Civilian: Oh, thank you! Thank you! I will not forget this!
Boris (via codec): Very good, Raiden! Now, keep heading for refinery.
Raiden goes on, kills some soldiers from behind and meets his first Gekko. Raiden fucks up the Gekko and the soldiers. More of them patrol ahead, but Raiden uses stealth and zandatsu to kill them. Raiden enters a brick building and heads upstairs into a corridor. Raiden then hears a mysterious robot-like voice.
?: Greetings, cyborg.
Raiden: Show yourself.
Before Raiden, with his sword ready, goes around the corner he's attacked with a saw on something flexible. In a split second, Raiden manages to dodge the saw so it doesn't cut off his head. The saw cuts a part of the building and Raiden falls out on the street. Once he lands, he cuts down the wreckage and containers falling on him. There was a metal dog hiding behind one of the containers with a saw on its tail. There was a brief clash between Raiden and the dog.
Raiden: And you are?
Dog: I am IF prototype LQ-84i.
Raiden: IF prototype?
LQ-84i: Interface prototype. All autonomous UGs feature high-level onboard artificial Intelligence. An additional prototype interface enables verbal communication. I possess an intellect far beyond human reckoning.
Raiden: You don't say. Okay then: What's the meaning of life? Why are we here?
LQ-84i throws some red-hot knives at Raiden. Raiden's eye glows red and Raiden repels the attack with his sword and his foot.
LQ-84i: I am here to kill you.
Raiden: That's it? Pretty simple thinking for such a mighty intellect.
LQ-84i: I may analyze orders, but I may not disobey them. Should I disobey a direct order, my memory would be wiped. I must destroy you.
Raiden: What good is an intellect if you can't use it?
LQ-84i: Your taunting is pointless. Exterminate!
LQ-84i climbs on the roof of a small building, roars and the battle begins!
Soon into the battle, the robot realizes that it won't be possible to kill Raiden quickly.
LQ-84i: A savvy warrior uses all of his tools. Backup required!
LQ-84i roars and three cyborg soldiers jump off the roof where LQ-84i stood. The truth is, for Raiden, it's not the enemy, it's more of a way to make up for run-down machine oil. Raiden kills the 3 hostile cyborgs soldiers. LQ-84i jumps off the roof and back onto the battlefield.
LQ-84i: I am not allowed a choice. You must die.
After another moment of slashing and dodging, LQ-84i jumps onto the roof again and calls backup.
LQ-84i: To continue alone would be foolish. Help me!
LQ-84i roars again and a gekko jumps from behind a building to the battlefield. Raiden, however, easily defeats the gekko. LQ-84i jumps off the roof again to the battlefield, continuing the battle.
LQ-84i: What do you fight for?
After a ton of clashing, dodging, and slashing, LQ-84i begins to malfunction due to critical health. Raiden picks LQ-84i up by the head and stabs him multiple times.
LQ-84i: S-stop…!
Raiden kicks LQ-84i into the air and uses Blade Mode to cut him into atoms.
LQ-84i: Cannot… continue…
LQ-84i decides to call Raiden on codec.
LQ-84i: Directive... liberate... nation... ensure freedom... Obey directive... must obey directive... no freedom... Freedom... undefined.
Raiden: What would an AI know about freedom…
Raiden makes his way to a small enemy outpost and clears it out using zandatsu. He proceeds to cross a bridge. Not long after entering the bridge, multiple unmanned attack helicopters fly toward Raiden. One of them apprehends Raiden, firing homing missiles at him. Raiden frontflips and runs along the bridge, destined to beat the bridge before it collapses.
When Raiden reaches the middle of the bridge, half of it collapses, and Raiden falls. Raiden uses his sword to cling onto the bridge, and then proceeds to run up the wall, back onto the bridge. Raiden runs again towards the bridge exit. The bridge collapses on Raiden, but Raiden jumps out of the way, towards the land. The chopper then hovers over the land, wanting a fight.
A little while later, Raiden manages to defeat the unmanned chopper. He heads deeper into the city. Raiden sees two hostile cyborgs holding another civilian hostage.
Soldier 1: You gotta be pretty stupid to try and hide here...
Soldier 2: Looks to me like Russian spies.
Civilian: I... We are just...
Soldier 2: Well we can't let 'em give away our position...
Soldier 1: Waste 'im. We'll fill out the paperwork later.
Raiden attacks the hostile cyborg soldiers. Some soldiers fly on sliders (flying drones with a small body, to which wings, thruster rockets and weapons are attached). Raiden obliterates all of the enemies, tossing them around like a ragdoll. Raiden walks over to the civilian.
Civilian: You... you saved my life! Thank you!
Raiden approaches an abandoned hotel, but is met with a sliding double-door gate. More sliders patrol ahead.
Kevin (via codec): So that's where they're holed up.
Raiden: Some kind of electronic lock on the gate...
Doktor (via codec): Most likely it opens only if you have the right ID data stored in your left hand. Perhaps you could find a cyborg with access, and - ah - borrow it?
Raiden: You see any cyborgs around here, Dok?
Kevin (via codec): Why not double back? Check the vehicle route again? You know, back at the entrance to the old city. Heh, who knows? Maybe you can hitch a ride. Most likely platoon commanders carry correct ID data for the gate. Use Enhanced Mode to figure out who to hit.
Raiden runs back to the entrance to the old city. More cyborg soldiers arrive, not noticing Raiden. Raiden uses his sword to cut off the left arm of a cyborg soldier, ready to use its data to unlock the gate. Raiden runs back to the gate and enters the 4-digit-code in the control panel. The control panel unlocks the gate, allowing Raiden to pass through.
Right when Raiden passes through the gate, a squad of soldiers apprehend him. Raiden, not even bothered or threatened, slices them into atoms. Raiden enters the abandoned hotel and climbs the stairs to the roof.
Raiden uses his enhanced vision to scope out the area. Raiden zooms into a part of the refinery factory.
Raiden: Dolzaev.
Raiden sees Dolzaev threaten a pink-haired woman with a gun. Dolzaev walks away from the woman, frustrated.
Raiden: That woman…
The woman notices Raiden, despite the long distance area, and blows Raiden a kiss. Raiden gets up in the protective rack.
Doktor (via codec): Raiden, what's happening? Your heart rate spiked...
Raiden abruptly closes the video communication window. The woman's already gone somewhere.
Raiden: Yeah. I just dodged a bullet. All right. I'm heading for the refinery.
Raiden jumps down the roof and deals with more hostile cyborgs. When he reaches an open area, a man stands there, waiting for his arrival.
Raiden: Hey, are you part of Dolzaev's men?
?: Raiden…
Raiden: And you are?
?: I am Vergil, the older and superior son of Sparda.
Raiden: Vergil? What kind of name is Vergil!?
Vergil: You, judge me? Hmph.
Raiden calls Boris on codec.
Raiden (to Boris): Boris! There's a guy with white hair and dressed in black, holding a katana. Is he part of Dolzaev's men?
Boris (on codec): Ah… Who is this guy? If he is here, he must be part of Dolzaev's men. Take care of him, Raiden.
Vergil: Have you finished speaking to your friend? I do not have any collaboration with this 'Dolzaev.'
Raiden: Then why are you here?
Vergil: I am here because I was waiting for your arrival. I see you've got some 'upgrades.'
Raiden: Are you stalking me?
Vergil: Hmm… I take it you're searching for this?
Vergil reaches into his coat and pulls out Raiden's severed arm.
Raiden (enraged): WHAT THE FUCK? DID YOU CUT MY OTHER ARM OFF?
Vergil: *laughs* Then you admit you are slow, not only physically, but mentally as well.
Raiden: But, how is this possible? I have a wife AND a child! I am not a virgin, you are!
Raiden, foolishly agreeing to some jokingly cause he read on the internet, is very confused.
Raiden pulls his sword out and tries to attack Vergil. Vergil blocks with the Yamato.
Vergil: Such a fool.
Vergil trick-teleports above Raiden and performs an Aerial Cleave, descending on Raiden in a merciless falling attack. Vergil hits Raiden, knocking Raiden back.
Raiden screams as he is knocked back. Raiden tries to get up, but almost falls, stumbling.
Raiden: What the hell are you? Wait… don't tell me-!
Vergil: You really are slow, but yes, it's true. I'm too, no longer a virgin; and I also have an offspring.
Raiden: But… if that's the case, how can you beat me so easily? Shouldn't we be on the same level?
Vergil: Your pathetic relationship with your family is useless. Child? Wife? THOSE WORDS MEANT NOTHING TO ME!
Raiden: I… don't get it.
Vergil: You don't seem to realize. Although what I said just now was harsh, I later realized the importance of family, the destruction I have caused in my endless pursuit of power.
Raiden: T-then why did you say your child and wife don't mean anything to you?
Vergil: Because my child is a deadweight. He refuses to get stronger and carry my father's legacy.
Raiden: But what about your wife?
Vergil: That woman bothers me. She too, refuted the cause of gaining strength. She too, refuted the legacy of Sparda.
Raiden rushes at Vergil. Vergil performs a Rapid slash.
Vergil: You too, are nothing but a weakling. Be gone. We may settle this fight once more when you achieve my motivation and power.
Raiden: B-but wait… How am I supposed to get as strong as you? You clearly overpower me in every way!
Vergil thinks about it. He comes to an agreement, being an honorable foe.
Vergil: Fine. I suppose working with you can have some large benefits for gaining strength, Raiden.
Raiden: Just like that?
Vergil: You do need strength for our fight. I do not wish to quarrel and wrangle with such weaklings.
Raiden: Glad to hear that, Vergil.
Vergil: Remember this, Raiden. This friendship of ours is temporary, only in use to assist you in your pursuit of strength. I may consider changing my mind about this friendship, beware.
Raiden: For a hired killer, you're pretty good.
Vergil: I am not under the supervision of anyone.
Raiden: That's good to hear. C'mon.
Vergil walks with Raiden to the refining factory. After opening the gate, Vergil looks at a crate. Vergil picks something up from the crate.
Boris (to Raiden, calling him on codec): Raiden, the cliff is just ahead, at the end of the old city. Beyond that is the refinery's backyard.
Raiden: Vergil, what is that in your hand?
Vergil: Guess it's my turn.
Vergil shows the item to Raiden. To no surprise, the item's name is "Vanish," a cleaning product.
Raiden: What?
Vergil: Vanish!
Raiden: Vergil, are you okay-
Vergil: MORE POWER!
Raiden: Focus on the mission!
Vergil: Apologies. This "Vanish" holds the cleansing power of Sparda.
Boris (via codec): Raiden! Are you listening to me?
Raiden: Oh, uh… sorry, Boris. So, what, it's a sheer drop? The refinery's not connected to the city at all?
Boris (via codec): No. It was only built two years ago. There should be a narrow path around there that leads to the plant. It is protected by a fence, but probably you can cut your way through.
Raiden: Probably.
Boris (via codec): Don't get cocky. Most likely it is Desperado running security down there.
Raiden cuts the gate and enters the territory of the refinery. Multiple tripods jump in the sight of Raiden and Vergil. Vergil prepares an attack.
Boris (via codec): Watch out, they keep on coming!
Vergil: Time to die!
Vergil performs a Judgment Cut End. The tripods are sliced into nothingness.
Raiden: What the hell?
Vergil: This. Is. Power.
Raiden sees a way to break into the inside of the refinery. Raiden cuts down the fan and enters the plant itself.
Boris (via codec): Dolzaev and his team must be in here. Find him.
A weaponized CCTV camera lies on a pillar. A laser shoots out beneath the camera, searching and guarding the area in its line of sight. Raiden and Vergil pass through and open the door to the next room.
Boris (via codec): Raiden, wait! There are active IR sensors in the area. Part of factory security, no doubt, but the enemy may be using it…
Raiden uses Augment mode to detect the laser sensors and jump past the weak spots. Vergil, on the other hand, trick-teleports past the sensors. Another CCTV camera lies in front of them. Raiden jumps and cuts down the camera. Raiden finds the door and uses the control panel to open it. More IR sensors lie and 3 guards patrol the room in front. Vergil scoffs and sighs in disappointment.
Vergil: How… pointless.
Vergil performs Heavy Rain Blades, raining mirage blades above all three cyborgs. The cyborgs explode.
Raiden: Vergil, how did you do that?
Vergil: Mirage blades are my main choice of ranged weaponry.
Raiden: Mirage… blades? Out of nothingness?
Vergil: Not only out of nothingness, but my own motivation and power. It consumes my Devil Trigger.
Raiden: Consumes what?
Vergil: Devil Trigger. It's an ability of mine to transform into a demon. It increases my attack power and allows for me to regenerate.
Raiden: Well, that's a real table-turner.
Boris (via codec): Raiden! Head upstairs now! Dolzaev might be leaving the AO!
Vergil uses his senses to analyze the upcoming foes. Raiden, distracted by talking to Boris, does not realize Vergil's disappearance.
Raiden (to Boris): Alright. Heading upstairs.
Vergil: Looks like we have an uninvited guest…
Raiden: Is it Dolzaev? Where is he?
Vergil: A human… a woman.
Raiden: A woman? That might be the one I saw earlier-
Vergil, annoyed by Raiden's stupid questions, threatens him with the Yamato.
Vergil: Enough questions. You're wasting both of our time.
Raiden and Vergil head upstairs and exit the building. What lies ahead is a massive cistern with a set of spiral stairs.
Vergil: Raiden, you will fight on your own from here on. I shall watch from a distance. Show me your motivation, Raiden.
Raiden: Guess I'm back to the lone-wolf.
Raiden climbs the stairs to the top of a massive cistern. Raiden meets the woman he saw from the hotel, and the same one Vergil scouted. Raiden holds his HF blade in his right hand.
Woman: I was wondering when you'd come... Jack the Ripper.
Raiden: No one calls me that anymore. Dolzaev. Where is he?
Woman: (tut-tut) I can show you a better time than that crusty old bear.
Raiden: You're in charge here?
Woman: I am "Mistral" - the Cold Wind of France. And you... your reputation precedes you. Liberian, but white as snow... A natural-born killer, even as a child...
Raiden: That was a long time ago.
Mistral: I was born in Algeria myself, you know. I'm only half French.
Raiden: And?
Mistral: We had our own civil war in the 90s. So you see? Cut from the same cloth, you and I.
Raiden: You don't know me.
Mistral: I lost my whole family, everything... But butchered those fuckers. My family's killers. That's when I realized... I am a killer, too. And a good one at that. I slaughtered dozens in Iraq, in Afghanistan... I'd found my calling.
Raiden: Proud of that, are you?
Mistral: What happened, happened. To be honest, I found it quite dull.
Mistral drops her cape and exposes her cybernetic body and some construction on her back with six connectors.
Mistral: My enemies fell like domino, one after another. Not once did I feel threatened. I was adrift... without challenge... without purpose... At times, I even envied my prey. At least they had a cause to die for. And then... I met him.
Raiden is being attacked by a tripod. He easily chops it up.
Raiden: Who?
Mistral: And I know what I'd been missing. His ideals gave my life meaning. Ideals, Jack. What are yours?
Raiden gets confused. He wasn't expecting that question.
Raiden: I… protect the weak.
Mistral: Still… so naive.
She picks up a chopped tripod and rips off its hands. The robot squeals like it's alive.
Raiden: And if I must kill to protect them... then so be it.
Mistral splits the tripod's leftovers in half with her heel.
Mistral: It seems we have less in common than I thought.
Raiden: I'll take that as a compliment.
Mistral: If you would kill for your ideals. then surely you are ready to die for them!
She calls on the tripods and they share their hands by inserting them into the connectors on her back. Mistral herself screams and moans during the procedure as if she were being raped.
Raiden activates his visor.
Mistral: Come, mon gars! [my boy!]
Mistral swiftly calls on tripod minions and defends herself well with her "hands", she utilizes a polearm made of tripod hands.
Raiden manages to cut off parts of the polearm and her "backup arms" using Zandatsu, but more tripods appear and Mistral uses their arms to fix the polearm and the arms.
Mistral: Hmm... Not bad.
Mistral's polearm surprises Raiden, as it proceeds to act like a whip AND a spear. Mistral and Raiden clash their swords until Mistral whacks Raiden with her polearm, knocking Raiden back. Mistral grabs Raiden by the leg with her polearm. Raiden uses Zandatsu to cut the polearm and is launched into a large pole. Raiden swings from the pole and whacks Mistral with his heel, knocking her off the cistern onto a large pipe. Raiden jumps from the cistern and lands on the pipe in style.
Mistral: I am starting to enjoy this.
Mistral jumps on top of an elevated portion of the pipe and proceeds to throw tripods at Raiden. Raiden parries and dodges the attacks. Mistral and Raiden fight it out again, somehow managing to balance on the pipe. Mistral unleashes a special move.
Mistral: Over here.
Mistral uses her polearm to dive into Raiden, but Raiden backflips, dodging. Mistral crashes into the pipe, destroying and ripping it apart one by one. Raiden jumps from the falling pieces of the pipe onto the ground, where Mistral and a couple of tripods await him.
Mistral: This ends now!
Mistral whips her polearm and prepares another special move. She spins vertically along with her polearm, aiming for Raiden.
Raiden and Mistral battle it out again, until clashing once more. Raiden dodges her attack by backflipping off a container.
Mistral: Don't fuck with me, boy!
Mistral, aiming for Raiden, strikes the container, and the container starts to leak, revealing it to be a liquid nitrogen container. Mistral begins to freeze, while Raiden, in the air, utilizes Zandatsu to chop Mistral into pieces, not unlike glass.
Mistral drops a walkie talkie. Raiden listens to Dolzaev and Mistral communicate on codec.
Dolzaev (via codec): Mistral, report! Your vitals are dropping!
Mistral: I… I lost... So this is how they felt...
Dolzaev (via codec): What?
Mistral: ...dying... for a cause...
Dolzaev (via codec): Wait. No... hold on!
Mistral: I am sorry. He was too... much...
Dolzaev (via codec): I do not need apology, I need you alive!
Mistral: But I know... you will never fall...
Dolzaev (via codec): What... What is this talk about?
Mistral: Je t'aime… de tout mon cœur. [I love you, with all of my heart.]
Dolzaev (via codec): "Je t'aime"? [I love you…] Mistral... You never…
Raiden picks up the walkie talkie on the ground.
Raiden: She's not talking to you, idiot.
Dolzaev (via the walkie talkie, climbing the stairs to another cistern): You! You killed her! Yob tvoyu mat! [You fucking asshole!] Murderer!
Raiden: That's rich coming from you. It's over, Dolzaev. Surrender.
Dolzaev (via the walkie talkie, still climbing the stairs): *laughs* Ah ty tupoi sukin syn. [You stupid son of a bitch.]
Raiden: Translation?
Dolzaev: *laughs* Why would I surrender? We are exactly where I want.
Raiden: Shit...
Dolzaev: Built with Russia money, to make Russia money. It is no plant for Abkhaz - It is their prison! But now... They will be free!
He presses a button and blows up the next cistern. Raiden's thrown away by the explosion.
Raiden: Damn... Crazy son of a bitch.
Boris calls Raiden via codec.
Boris (via codec): Raiden?! Raiden, what happened?!
Raiden: Bastard blew himself up...
Boris (via codec): I see... Time to get you out of there. We're sending a helicopter. Secure an LZ.
Raiden: Understood…
Vergil jumps down from a high altitude towards Raiden.
Vergil: Not very motivated of yourself, but exceptions can be made, Raiden.
Raiden: Vergil.
Vergil: You lack much motivation, but that woman… was truly a disappointment.
Raiden: You don't say?
Vergil: You got that right. Let's abandon this wasteland.
Vergil and Raiden leave.
