Chapter 2
The guard and Link made their way over to the school though quite how this guard though Lilt could help them get to Hyrule Link didn't know.
"There's a reason Lilt was chosen to be a tutor here at this school, the very school you so happen to be" The guard said
"I don't follow" Link responded
"You don't remember do you?" The guard said
"Should I?" Link asked
"It would certainly help" The guard replied
The guard eluded to no more for they were now at the school.
Link opened the door but even the guard was shocked by what he found. A note in a bottle and a trashed class room.
Link grabbed the bottle and pulled out the note.
"If anything should happen to me take Link to the train" Link read, "What train?"
"Come with me, we're going to need a lantern" The guard told him
"Where is Lilt?"
"I have a feeling he's in the same place Zelda is now if not...well I wouldn't like to think"
Link found a lantern hidden away in the back of a cupboard but it was void of oil.
"Only one place around here that sells lantern oil" Link said
"A bi-product of the era of Twilight" The guard laughed, "I hope you have some rupees on you or you'll have to go and find Beadle and sell that uniform of yours"
"Not funny" Link said, emptying the contents of his coin purse, "50 rupees"
"That's enough to get us there, how are we getting back?" The guard asked
"Maybe we'll get lucky" Link said
Link would rather have eaten his own hand off then give 50 rupees over to the unscrupulous blue bird that guarded the oil like a crown jewel,
"Donation for the lantern oil in the box over there..." The bird said
"Minimum of 50 rupees, we know" Link said, "What happened to your owner?"
"Don't know what you mean" The bird said
"Yes you do, he had big red curly hair and sat on a log, he offered me soup once" Link said and then he gasped. "I mean I read that's what he did for the Hero of Twilight...I'm sure"
"That's a very specific piece of information there knight, you didn't read that in a book" The bird said, "What do you need it for anyway?"
"My professor is missing" Link said
"You think you'll find him in the lost woods? You think you'll find anything in the lost woods?" The bird asked before suddenly laughing
As they approached the entrance of the lost woods that laughter was still ringing in his ears.
Link was furious and alarmed,
"You seem to know more about this situation than I do, what gives?" Link asked the guard
"Well, these ancestors...might not be ancestors"
"What do you mean?" Link asked
"Just that perhaps rather than being born you just go back in time and remain dormant for as long as it takes the seal to be broken on the evil that has plagued Hyrule for centuries" The guard said
Suddenly Link and the guard were surrounded by purple mist,
"Huh!"
"Pay attention Link, that lantern will guide you"
"How?" Link asked
"Know where you're trying to get to" The guard said
"I'm trying to get to the train Lilt spoke of" Link said
A gust of wind blew embers off to the left and Link followed them. The guard wasn't too far behind.
Link started to worry and took a wrong turn and ended up back at the start,
"Link!?" Came the guard' voice
"I can hear you!" Link called back
"Focus!"
Link though about the train Lilt spoke of again and the wind lead him back to the guard, this time he kept going until the wind blew from another direction.
After what seemed like and age they encountered a set back after a Lizarfos jumped out and caused Link to drop the lantern, start a fire and burn most of the fuel. However it did burn itself in the process, aiding Link in his ability to destroy him but with a wooden sword in hand and wooden arrows and a wooden bow he soon found himself without any weapons at all.
"Well that's not good" Link said
"We're not going back, here take that rock and fuse it with the stick" The guard said
"I don't have that power, that's reserved for the Sheika Slate, that's at the castle" Link told the guard
"Of course it is, they couldn't keep it close by in case of an emergency?"
Link held up the lantern and the wind blew forward and just up ahead Link and the guard could make out an overgrown shed.
Within the shed was an old but beautiful steam locomotive.
Link instantly felt like he knew this engine.
"Awe, it even has a little carriage" Link smiled, "Hello old friend"
"Is the train still there?" The guard asked from outside the shed
"Just the locomotive" Link said
"Then I guess I'll ride in the cab with you" The guard said
A few minutes later and Link and the guard were steaming their way threw the lost woods. Now on a track they no longer needed to worry about getting lost.
The train then went through an overgrown and long forgotten Kokiri Forest, the huts in the village still prominent but overrun by Deku Bubbas that snapped at the locomotive but soon regretted it.
Link was moved as the locomotive past by many old villages of Hyrule, and a ranch, all of these things long abandoned.
"Why do we never see these places any more?" Link asked
"It's hard to explain but the world has expanded each time you reawakened and Hyrule of old had to be replaced and hidden away. Their inhabitants had to leave those places behind"
"That's so sad" Link said with a gulp
"It is what it is, destiny" The guard said. He then pointed ahead to the old Hyrule castle, "This track will take us beneath the Temple of Time and up into old Hyrule Town. From there we will be able to find and cross the veil into our time, our castle"
This was easier said then done however.
When the train pulled up beneath the Temple of Time; Saria was waiting for them with a message.
"The veil is in the courtyard, you're going to have to get past the guards if you want to get into your time"
"Oh boy" Link said
"That's too easy I'm a guard" The guard said
"Not in this timeline you're not" Saria said
"I can act as decoy"
"No!" Link cried
"Link, this is your destiny, what could these guards do to me? Enrol me in a different time line. I'm just one guard what difference could I make to your life?" The guard said
"Famous last words"
"You got any better ideas?"
"No" Link sighed
So while Link hid the guard got himself spotted at different points, allowing Link access to the mote but once in the garden he was on his own.
He had never held his breath for so long, right now he wished he had the Sheika uniform, or some hush-rooms,
He nearly got caught a few times but avoided capture standing as close to the walls as he could get and blending in with the statues and shadows.
Link' heart was racing as he looked around the last bend.
Four guards! Four!
"OK here goes nothing" Link said and he threw a rock across, getting the guard's attention
With whistles blowing and feet running away from where he was hiding Link sprinted the rest of the way, running out of stamina half way.
He forced himself to run as he heard two guards returning to their spot having found no one at the source of the sound and just when it all seemed hopeless his energy returned and he dived at a shimmer of light in the centre of a fountain in the centre of the courtyard.
