Chapter 12

The following Monday

Adam was taking his weekly Monday after-school club and Rachel was in her office, but sat on the sofa and not behind her desk as she usually was found to be. A knock on her office door pulled her out of her trial of thought.

"Rachel, you got a moment?" They asked, looking at her.

"Yes, of course. Come in." Rachel replied, setting her cup down.

"About last week... "They started, but Rachel cut them off.

"You have nothing to apologize for Tom. It never should have happened. How is Lorna doing?" Rachel asked, sitting up straight.

"She's doing alright, thank you. But my behavior was way out of line and I most definitely shouldn't have spoken to you like that. It wasn't your fault, the Earl thing. What I said, I was wrong. It's no excuse, I saw Lorna was hurt and saw red." Tom explained to her.

"I appreciate that. It's true though, if I had turfed him out when everyone was telling me to, Maxine would probably still be alive today." Rachel replied, bowing her head in guilt for what she thought was her part in the teenager's death.

"We'll never know, Rachel. But Maxine's death wasn't your fault. You can't live with that guilt. Earl would have done what he had done, regardless. One way or the other. " Tom told her

Rachel gives him a sad smile.

"Anyway, I best be off," Tom tells her

"Bye," Rachel replies, standing up and making her way down to the food tech department.

She watches through the window as he works.

"There's Mrs Fleet." A year 8 spoke up, looking in her direction.

She goes into the classroom.

"Looks great, everyone." She complimented them, looking around the classroom.

"We're making Apple pie, Mrs. Fleet," Adam tells her, standing up.

"Apple pie? My favorite." She replies.

She stays for the rest of the club.

A while later

Adam is busy with making dinner and Rachel is on her laptop.

At Tom Lorna's

"Dinners ready," Lorna called from the kitchen.

Tom goes in and wraps his arms around her waist.

"How are you feeling? " He asked, resting his head on her shoulder.

"I'm OK, love. " Lorna tells him, giving him a side glance.

"As long as you sure? I ever get my hands on that little. " Lorna cuts him off.

"Honey, I'm fine. It's over with now. He's a kid troubled kid who lost it. I'm not the first and won't be the last. " She tells him.

Tom nods

"Come on, let's eat. " She says, sitting down.

The couple enjoyed their meal with a pleasant conversation.

Back at Rachel Adam's

"Honey?" Rachel called from the living room.

"Yeah?" He answered from the kitchen

"Would you have a look at this? " She asked, looking at the laptop on her lap.

Adam comes in, drying his hands as he does so.

"What's that, love? " He asked, looking at her.

'I've been looking into fertility treatment." Rachel replied, looking at her hands.

"You think you're ready for this?" Adam asked, giving a sideward glance.

Rachel nods.

He felt guilty, guilty for putting her through this, guilty for not being able to give her the one thing she wanted most in the world, guilty for the pain, guilty for the heartache.

He felt like a burden, maybe she'd be better off with someone, who could give her what she wanted, what she deserved.

"I don't want to put you through any more unnecessary pain. " He told her, setting the laptop aside.

"What? I wouldn't be doing this if I didn't want to. Adam. " Rachel replied, opening up.

Adam nods.

"I feel guilty, guilty for putting you through this, guilty for not being able to give you the one thing you wanted most in the world, guilty for the pain, guilty for the heartache. The basic thing a husband should be able to give his wife and I can't do that for you. I sometimes think maybe you are better off without me, to go and find someone who can give you everything you deserve." He opens up to her.

Rachel's eyes fill up with tears as her husband lays out his raw emotions. She hugged him tight, not wanting to let go.

"Oh, darling." She sniffles as she buries her face in his neck.

"I'm so sorry I shouldn't be putting this on you." He told her, pulling back from her embrace.

"We're a team, remember?" Rachel replied, giving him a slow, soft kiss.

"I'll book that appointment," Rachel whispered, running her hand through his hair.

Adam nods his head.

"I'll finish dinner, love." He replied, getting up and heading towards the kitchen again.

A while later, they received a confirmation email from the clinic

Rachel released a breath she didn't realize she was holding in.

This is it, their journey of a lifetime, a journey they would navigate together, a journey that would either make or break them. A journey that would define their future.
