The restaurant wasn't too fancy, just nice enough where t-shirts and jeans weren't acceptable. Amity put on a blue dress, while Luz chose a pink shirt with a blue sweater vest and a purple skirt. As they arrived with Camila, a waiter showed them to the table where Vee and her partner were already waiting for them. She had a sensible yellow dress on while Masha wore a black blazer over a green dress. Warm embraces were exchanged all around.
The disguised basilisk gave her sister a particularly tight hug. "It's been way too long, sis."
"You're right. It's good to be home."
Masha pulled Amity in and gave her a pat on the back. "Wasn't expecting to see you here. Finally giving the ex another chance?"
"Something like that."
The group sat down at the table and the waiter took their orders. The drinks and appetizers arrived quickly.
"So, are you two staying in town long?" Vee asked.
"I think...I might be here a while," said Luz. "Traveling all over the country has...taken a lot out of me. I'd like to try paying off my debts and going back to school."
"If you need a job, I could pull some strings at the Historical Society," offered Masha.
"That's sweet of you. Whether or not it's a good fit, I'll think about it."
"What about you, Amity?" Vee turned her attention to the witch. "Just here for the wedding, or...?"
"I'll probably have to go back to Cali once the weekend's over," said Amity before turning her attention to Luz, "but I know I'll be coming back...and soon."
Luz just smiled at Amity as they held hands under the table.
"Try not to stay away too long," said Masha. "The last time you two split up, Luz practically vanished off the face of the Earth."
Amity did a spit take. Luz nearly choked after biting into a dinner role.
Camila picked up on the couple's discomfort and changed the subject. "So Vee, what have the two of you been up to lately?"
Masha looked over at their girlfriend with a smile, and Vee smiled back at them. "That's actually a big reason we called you out tonight..."
"We're adopting a baby!"
Luz and Camila's faces lit up.
"¡¿Voy a ser tía?!"
"¡¿Voy a ser abuela?!"
Vee and Masha nodded with a grin.
Camila got between the pair pulled them into a hug. "¡Mi culebrita va a ser mamá! ¡Felicitaciones a los dos!"
"That's amazing!" said Amity. "Congratulations!"
"We thought about it for a while," said Masha. "There's a list we've been on for a couple years now..."
"And there's a little one with our name on them less than a month a way!" Vee finished.
"That's great!" said Luz, eyes tearing up as she took her sister's hand. "I'm so happy for you!" As she pulled Vee into a hug, Amity could hear her sniffling.
"Luz, are you alright?" Camila asked.
"Yeah," Luz pulled herself away and wiped her eyes. "That's just...such good news and...I wasn't ready for it. I'll be right back." And with that, she turned away from them and went to the restroom.
Camila, Vee, and Amity all exchanged concerned glances.
"What was that about?" asked Masha.
"She's...been through a lot," said Amity before turning to Camila. "I'm gonna go check on her."
Camila placed a hand on Amity's shoulder and gave her a nod.
Amity made her way to the restrooms, pausing just outside the door. After confirming she could hear Luz crying inside the women's room, she pulled out her phone and sent her girlfriend a text.
Can I come in?
The witch stared at the three dots as they appeared, and disappeared, and appeared again before a message finally appeared.
OK
She walked in and found Luz bent over the sink, still sobbing.
"Luz? Sweetie?"
"That could have been us."
"Oh..."
"I am happy for them, really. It's just...If I had just settled down like you wanted...when you wanted...then maybe...you and I would've already...I'm sorry, this shouldn't have been so overwhelming."
Amity pressed herself against Luz's back and her arms around her waist. "It's okay to be upset, I've shed a few tears myself over what could have been...but I also kept hoping that another chance would come along. We'll get there...eventually."
Luz seemed to be calming down. Amity could hear her taking deep breaths, and feel her chest as she slowly inhaled and exhaled. Then, she turned herself around and hugged Amity back.
"Thanks, babe."
"Any time." Amity handed Luz a paper towel and let her wipe her tears away. "Are you okay now?"
"I will be...and I'm ready to get back to dinner."
The two shared a quick kiss before exiting the restroom. They found Camila standing just outside the hall waiting for them. Luz stepped toward her and allowed her mother to hug her as well, before walking them all back to the table.
