They both lounged in the room. Fuu was restless, fondling her netsuke in her fingers. She peeked inside the skull's eye. She tapped her toes. She played with her hair.
Mugen lay back supporting his weight with his forearms. He scowled at the roof.
"Argh, I'm bored". Sighed Fuu.
"Then go to sleep".
"But I'm not tired"
Silence.
"... Hey wanna play a game?" She asked hopefully.
"What kind of game?" He was suspicious now.
"Oh, I don't know... how about Go?" She offered.
"Do you have a board?" Mugen asked dryly.
"No, but we could find some pebbles outside?" She replied hopefully.
"Nah".
"What about karuta?" She asked hopeful again.
"What about that rope tying game... kinbaku?" He turned smiling to see her reaction.
"Huh? ...Ew, Mugen, what the hell! Gross. No way!" She shrieked.
Mugen gave a chuckle to himself. He loved to get a rise out of her, and man it was easy sometimes.
Fuu huffily ignored him for awhile. Momo had flown out of her breast and she watched as the squirrel danced around the room.
After awhile Fuu offered, "I wonder what Jin's doing right now?"
Man she pissed him off. She was obviously still drunk. "What? You miss him already." He said with malice.
"It's not like that you idiot" she screeched in response. Way over the top.
"Hmph. He's probably snoring into a puddle of drool. That lightweight." Sneered Mugen.
"Actually, I wonder if we should get you that second cup of sake." Mugen mused with a grin.
"Argh, you pervert!" Yelled Fuu.
"Geez, you're the one with the dirty mind. I was just thinking it might shut you up and put you to sleep, that's all" he smirked.
Fuu participated in angry silence again for awhile. Who knew things could be so awkward between them when they weren't fighting.
Eventually Fuu offered one final suggestion, "how about kage-e? You go outside and look through the door screen," she gestured with her hands, "and I'll be behind the screen. You try and guess what I am". She had stood up as she spoke, animated.
Mugen thought for a moment, then begrudgingly hoisted himself from the floor. Sliding the door to outside closed behind him. He looked around at the dark night. Not a noise except for the distant hum from the restaurant. It was colder now and the moon had shrunk high into the sky. Momentarily he pondered escaping to the tavern. He'd have a headstart before she knew he was gone.
He started to see movement behind the door screen. His eyebrows darted up when he recognised Fuu's kimono being untied and manipulated into a different form. She stuck her leg in the air and pivoted. Eventually her body parts came together and her silhouette formed the shape of a graceful crane. A smile crept onto Mugen's lips. He watched as she held the pose, then her limbs noticeably started to shake with the effort.
"Crane" Mugen called out.
Her leg collapsed back to the floor.
He gave an unguarded laugh.
"I'll try one more" she called happily through the screen.
He could see her gathering something up in the room. He leaned back onto a post, watching with intrigue.
She lay down on her back with her legs in the air. She held things from the room in her feet. She lifted her kimono skirt up and out tight. It was like her legs were growing from something.
'"Hmm." Mugen cocked his head to the side, but still couldn't figure it out.
"Any guesses?" She called.
Mugen's eyes traced the form of her legs down, nope, no clue.
He quickly slid the door aside to reveal Fuu lying with her head to him, skirt in her hands and legs madly trying to keep aloft, and hold of, a fan, her hair pins and various other items.
"Arrg, Mugen you're not supposed to look!" She scolded. Implements started to fall from her toes.
"Sorry crazy, I got no idea" he said softly.
Fuu let her feet fall with a thump. She was breathing heavily from the exertion. Her kimono all askew, her hair flailed over her face.
"My turn!" Said Mugen.
He grabbed her arm and shoulder and hoisted her to her feet. He all but shoved her out the door.
The cold enveloped her and she tightened her kimono and smoothed her hair. She turned towards the screen to be immediately confronted with a huge garden lantern. Mugen stood as still as stone. You could still see his human form, feet apart and knees sharply bent. It was almost as if he was poised to draw his blade.
Fuu laughed, a giant smile upon her face.
"It's a garden lantern!" She cried out, clapping her hands together.
"Ah ha" cheered Mugen back.
"Do something trickier" called Fuu. She giggled at his thinking form.
He removed his jacket and tied it around his body. He smoothed and manipulated his hair. He turned this way and that. Then placed his hands to the floor, lifting and distorting his body. The perfect scruffy rooster formed in silhouette. It took Fuu's breath away.
"Mugen! That's amazing" she cheered.
"Yeah? So what's your guess" came his muffled reply. He had fabric from his clothing tensioned between his teeth.
"A rooster!" Fuu cried, sliding back the screen to reveal his immense strength. His arms were bent, supporting his body in the air which was swathed in jacket and twisted out of balance.
She folded to the floor laughing and so did he. Eventually they both lay there with big goofy grins on their faces. The night was still young.
