Amity was nearly ready to go. Her best friend's wedding was hours away, and the weekend almost done. After which, she'd be returning to California, leaving the light of her life behind once again. Sure, Luz was in a better place now, and she planned on visiting her again, but that didn't stop her from worrying a little. Some additional reassurance her girlfriend would still be here when she came back would be nice. At least it wasn't keeping her up at night like it had been. Her train of thought was broken when the phone in her hotel room rang.
"Yes?"
"Miss Blight, there's a Miss Noceda at the front desk here to see you."
"Thanks for telling me. Go ahead and let her up."
The witch felt her heart flutter a little. She was only half expecting Luz to show up at the hotel. They might be going to the wedding as a couple, but her other half just expected to meet her at the venue. Amity quickly zipped up her dress and put on her earrings. Shoes could wait until it was time to leave.
Knock knock knock.
Amity took a deep breath and opened the door, and was taken aback a bit to see Luz still in her street clothes, but carrying an opaque plastic bag on a hangar and transparent container holding a single pink carnation surrounded by forget-me-nots.
"Hey," Luz said with a smile. "Wow, you look amazing."
"Hey yourself," Amity replied. The couple leaned forward and shared a quick kiss before walking back into the room. "I'm glad you're here, though I thought you'd be a little more dressed for the occasion."
"I got what I need right here," said Luz, tilting her head towards the plastic bag. "Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself, but I figured it'd be a good idea to have a change of clothes here...just in case things go well enough."
Amity could feel her face flush and her heart skip a beat. She couldn't help but get a little excited at the prospect of being with Luz again in that way, and the fact that she was getting her hopes up too was definitely a good sign. After stifling some nervous laughter, she pointed Luz in the direction of the bathroom. "Um, yeah. Good thinking. You can go ahead and get changed in there. I'll...be right outside." Amity took a seat on the bed while waiting for Luz, taking deep breaths to calm herself and push any lingering doubts out of her mind.
"Okay, I'm ready."
At the sound of Luz's voice, Amity turned around to see her girlfriend in a flowing pair of khakis, a white top tied up at her neck, and a purple vest. Stringbean was wrapped around her right bicep disguised as a bracelet. She'd slicked back her hair just like she had for Grom. "You're beautiful."
Luz beamed back at her, taking the corsage out of its container and sliding it onto Amity's wrist. "For the first time in years, I feel beautiful. Now come on, we got a wedding to get to."
"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to witness the joining of Hunter Noceda and Willow Park in holy matrimony."
The wedding was being held at the Gravesfield Arboretum. Willow would often come here to get in touch with nature, give some of the flowers a bit of extra life. And now, here she was taking the next big step in her own life with the man she loved.
"Marriage is a blessed arrangement...that dream within a dream."
All eyes in the crowd were on the happy couple, though Luz and Amity would make passing glances at each other. The former was crying again, but she wasn't breaking down like she had earlier in the week. Amity would occasionally squeeze her hand, Luz would squeeze back, and they'd smile before turning their attention back to their friends. Camila sat beside them, letting out similar tears of joy. She'd taken the entire squad in when they had nowhere else to go, looked after the entire group as if they were her own children, and even accepted Hunter as her adopted son. He'd come a long way since from the boy they met all those years ago.
"And your love...a true love...will follow you forever. So treasure your love as you recite your vows."
"Willow, before I met you, I was little more than a shell. I thought I knew who I was supposed to be, doing what I was told without question. In time, I discovered what I truly wanted for myself...became someone I truly like being. You're my treasure, my whole world. I wouldn't be who I am today...the man I'm supposed to be...without you."
"Hunter, when we first met, I had no idea just how special you would become to me. Someone who always saw me as the woman I wanted to be instead of just who everyone said I was. Even after losing everything, we persevered because we still had each other. You're my other half, and I'm ready for us to spend the rest of our lives together as a whole."
"Willow Park, do you take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband?"
"I do."
"And Hunter Noceda, do you take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife?"
"I do."
"Do you have the ring?"
Hunter put two fingers to his lips, whistled, and a husky walked down the aisle with a pillow on his back. "Good boy, Perro." He patted the dog on the head before taking one of the bands off the pillow and sliding it onto Willow's finger. "With this ring, I thee wed."
Willow gave Perro a pat, picked up the other ring, and slid it onto Hunter's finger. "With this ring, I thee wed."
"Then by the power vested in my by the First Church of Gravesfield, I now pronouce you man and wife. You may kiss the bride."
The bride and groom embraced, and a thunderous applause erupted from the attendees. As the crowd stood up, the couple made their way back up the aisle. Willow tossed her bouquet into the crowd, and Luz caught it. She stared at it for a moment, dumbfounded, before glancing over to Amity. Neither of them said a word, simply smiling at each other.
Later after dinner, speeches, and wedding cake, Luz and Amity found themselves on the dance floor, Shania Twain's 'Still The One' playing around them.
"Amity?"
"Hm?"
"Thank you...for saving my life...and everything you've done for me since."
"You're welcome, Luz...I need to ask you something."
"What?"
"You always seemed so surprised that none of us hate you...that I never hated you in spite of all that happened. Did you ever...resent me at all?"
"Why would I? Even if our split was the right choice, it was still a mutual decision."
"But was it really? I forced you to choose between me and your mission. Even if I couldn't stay on that path with you, we didn't necessarily have to break up. If we'd stayed in touch...if you'd known there was someone out there waiting for you...someone who missed you...who still loved you...needed you, then maybe...you never would have been on that roof."
Luz caressed Amity's cheek in her hand. "Sweet Potato, I hated myself more than I could ever hate you...and I don't want to hate myself anymore." She pulled the witch into a hug. "And don't blame yourself for what I almost did. The choices we make are our own...and nobody else's." Her voice sounded as if she was realizing this as she said it, then pulled out and looked her girlfriend in the eye. "Someday, I'm gonna love myself as much as you love me...as much as I love you."
Amity smiled and leaned forward into Luz, pressing their lips together for a long passionate kiss. When they finally came apart, she looked at Luz with a grin. "Wanna get outta here?"
"Absolutely, but...let's finish this dance and mingle a little more, okay? We can't bail on my big bro and our best friend on their big night without a word."
"You're right. Fine by me."
