I woke with a jolt as I felt the wind blow into the room from the big window; Ang and I had left open. Goosebumps began to form all over my legs and arms from the lack of warmth, thanks to my constant kicking and moving when I slept. I quickly covered myself, hoping that'd help lull me back to sleep. It took me about five minutes before I knew it was useless. I gave up, letting out a frustrated sigh; I rubbed my eyes, sitting up in bed, before looking over to Angela.
She was clueless about my struggle. I was bitter with envy that she was able to sleep comfortably. How are we related? I thought. It's known that I'm a light sleeper and early riser. My family, on the other hand, are not. Which would usually make me feel like the odd one, but I've grown accustomed to the idea of enjoying the lack of noise or distractions.
"Get up," I yawned, still tired.
Angela either didn't hear or didn't care to listen - usually the latter. Angela could always sleep through anything. The cold seemed to be sweeping once again into the room; I groaned as a chill made its way down my spine. I shivered, trying to keep what little warmth I had before getting out of bed and closing the window. Making my way to Angela's bed hoping to wake her up. I grabbed onto her comforter to pull. If I can't sleep in, neither can you. I thought bitterly as Angela finally realized what was going on.
"What's up?" She asked groggily; I climbed into her bed and she welcomed me with open arms snuggling.
"We have to get ready for school," I said, feeling warm and cozy compared to my own bed. Angela hummed, still asleep and not even close to being awake.
I started to move around her bed, hoping she'd get annoyed. She didn't, if anything; she held me in place. "Stop, or Imma kick you." She mumbled.
I was wide awake by then and didn't like the feeling of restraint, so I nudged her to the side, which in return got me booted off the bed. I shrieked, taking the covers with me as I was entangled within them.
Angela groaned, getting up. "You're so annoying." She scooted closer to the edge where I had fallen, her head now on the mattress looking down at me. I ignored her as I struggled to untangle myself from the sheets.
"We should start getting dressed. I have to do your hair, remember? We also don't want to be late for the first day." I looked over at Ang, who was already shuffling through my side of the closet.
"I totally forgot to look for something to wear last night." She was anxious as she pushed a few hangers to the side while grabbing one of my tops, asking for my approval or not- but, before I could utter a word, she held a different one. I opened my mouth to tell her the last one was better, but she already hung it back.
I went over to the closet, knowing she would take forever, as we still had to manage her knotted hair. Grabbing the white long-sleeve button-up that she had grabbed first before pulling some dark jeans from the drawers and long white wool socks.
"Wear this with the brown boots and coat. Angela took the clothes, giving me a quick peck on the cheek - a gesture she'd always use to 'thank' me or anyone in our family.
"You're the best."
I shrugged, "Of course I am."
Angela left the room, heading to the bathroom downstairs for some privacy. As we both knew, Isaac was going to use the bathroom upstairs. I quickly changed into the clothes I had picked out last night after church. Black jeans, a black turtle neck top, a grey wool sweater, and black socks with my handy dandy rain boots. It was simple and not too flashy like the outfits Jess would wear. I quickly pulled on the gray v-neck sweater over my top that would keep me warm from the cold. Something mom was adamant that we should always do - layer up and stay warm.
Grabbing my backpack and Ang's, I left the room checking to ensure I wasn't missing anything to pack. "Ellie, is Angela already up?" Dad asked, fixing his tie in the hallway while looking at himself in the hung-up mirror.
"Yeah, she's downstairs getting ready."
"Good, good," He hesitated before looking at me. "Can you wake up Isaac?" I snorted, heading downstairs, "Nice try, I heard mom tell you- you need to wake him up and get him ready. Angela and I are leaving."
I can hear dad huff in frustration. "Sometimes I wonder who you listen to mo-"
"Mom!" I yelled, already going down the stairs. Yeah, Angela was a pain to wake up, but Isaac was on another level.
I spotted mom in the kitchen pouring herself a cup of coffee as well as dads before heading off to the vet clinic. Mom's straight hair was up in its usual ponytail with her favorite green scrubs that were littered with paw prints. "He tried to send you off on a suicide mission?" mom joked, probably hearing our conversation. I nodded, placing the two bags on the table.
"How do I look?" I asked.
Mom leaned against the island, twirling her finger around in a circle for me to turn around. "That's cute," she complimented, "Just add a jacket. It's going to be cold, and I don't need you getting sick." I rolled my eyes, agreeing - knowing I wasn't going to.
Angela came out of the bathroom, her hair up in a messy ponytail with her glasses in place. "A little help?" she asked.
I nodded my head nudging her back inside the bathroom as I studied her outfit. She listened to me about the brown jacket and matching boots making the look, look effortless. I smiled at her through the mirror fixing her frizzy hair and ponytail. Once done I started to brush my hair and teeth before leaving.
"Angela, you look stunning. Whose heart are you going to break today?" Mom joked, winking at me as I came back to the kitchen.
Angela blushed; I grinned handing her, her backpack and grabbing the keys to our old sedan. "We'll text you after school," I said, opening the door and towards the car.
"Wait, you guys didn't eat breakfast." mom cried after us.
Angela called over her shoulder, "We'll eat at school." Mom didn't say anything, which I took as an okay to dash to the car before mom could bring up about the extra layer I was missing.
I made it inside the sedan turning the ignition on and blasting the heat. Angela wasn't so lucky as mom grabbed her arm, talking to her about something. Angela nodded her head to mom. Mom smiled and gave her a quick kiss on her head goodbye before waving me bye. I waved back to her as Angela climbed inside the warm car. Rubbing my hands together to get some warmth as I waited for Angela to buckle up. She sighed in relief.
"I was worried for a second you didn't turn the heat on." I laughed, reversing out of the driveway.
"What did mom want?" I asked, shifting the gear to drive.
"She asked if we can pick up the 'menace' from school."
I made a face focusing on the road. "Eww, you agreed, didn't you?" I didn't have to ask; I already knew the answer.
"Well yeah," She nudged me. "They're busy with work, and besides, it won't be too bad."
I gave her a quick glance before focusing back on the road. "You say that as if it isn't a chore to do." She shrugged in response, turning on the radio to the car.
"It isn't really; besides, it's fun to visit our old school and see our teachers." I wrinkled my nose in distaste as I drove us to school. It didn't take long as I started to turn into the school's parking lot.
"Then you're getting out of the car and picking him up." I parked the car next to Tyler's jeep - he was already out and about showing off his new paint on the vehicle. Angela waved at the boy, who smirked as he waved back.
"Another day in lousy Forks," I muttered; Ang gave my shoulder a reassuring rub.
"C'mon, it won't be so bad. Before we know it, we'll be graduating and out there, living the college life."
I grimaced, not really what I wanted to hear, but I gave her a small smile to show it worked. She happily got out of the car, waving enthusiastically to Jess. Mike was still in his car with the window down on the passenger side as he listened to Tyler go on about his jeep and anything that seemed interesting. I groaned, rolling my eyes. I already knew today was going to be horrible. I glanced at the review mirror, watching a silver Volvo pull into a space behind my car.
I furrowed my eyes, Whose car is that? I thought. It was new and shiny, which stood out like a sore thumb compared to the dark, worn-out cars many students at Forks have. 'I bet it's a new student,' I thought. Just what Forks needed, more newcomers showing off wealth just to fit in. I snorted, feeling bad for whoever it was. 'You won't be making many friends.' I thought. I grabbed my backpack from the back of the car and got off, watching Jess squeal to Angela.
Sure enough, it wasn't a new student but the Cullens. "Did he just get a new car?" Tyler asked. He seemed deflated as everyone's attention was on Edwards's shiny ride, not giving Tyler's jeep a second glance. I felt terrible for the boy - who really was excited a few minutes ago.
The lot soon turned into awe when the rest of the Cullens climbed out of the car. To say they looked good was an understatement and an injustice to society. They all seemed to be walking out of those fashion magazines Jess would read during study hour.
"They're definitely good-looking," Angela muttered complimenting them as she eyed Jess, who was blushing, as she tried to steal a few glances at Edward without making it noticeable - it didn't work.
I sighed, going through my backpack. Paying them no mind, I pulled out my schedule, checking to make sure I wasn't going to have to rush to my first class. Before I could leave Angela and her friends, she called out to me.
"I'll see you at lunch?" she asked; I chewed on my bottom lip - contemplating before deciding it was better than eating alone. I nodded, smiling at her before waving my schedule at her and heading to hell - the first day of school.
