"It'll definitely scar," Reo sighs, gently smoothing a bandage over the back of Izuku's neck. "I just don't know how badly."
Midoriya lets his eyes close tiredly. His neck burns horribly and every breath stokes the fire in his side. He just wants to sleep.
"I'll be back tomorrow," his friend murmurs. "Since you're pretending to be sick I can just tell your mom I'm bringing you your school work or something. I'll try and get some better pain pills as well."
"Thank you," Midoriya whispers. "You really saved me."
"You'd've done the same thing for me," Reo grunts as he pushes himself up. He gathers his things, pausing at the door. "Will you be alright on your own?" he asks softly, looking back at him.
Midoriya offers the older teen a thumbs up that lies without the need for words.
Reo sighs, a small smile twitching at his lips at the gesture.
He doesn't press him for answers just yet despite the questions Izuku can see broiling in those amber eyes of his. I'm sorry, Midoriya whispers in his head. Though to be fair did tell me never to come to you with a broken arm, and this is probably just a little worse than that.
Izuku waits till he hears the front door lock before he carefully peels away the velcro straps of the bulletproof vest. It's easier to remove than his other gear.
He's scared to look down at the damage his side's taken, scared that hiding it could be the decision that kills him for good. Emerald eyes find his injured side engulfed in a brilliant red. Midoriya lets out a shuttered breath, already in borderline tears from a single glance at it. He knows his ribs are broken, knows his condition is bad, knows one wrong move could puncture his lung or liver or artery or some other vital part of his body.
He bites his lip, looking away from it before slipping on a t-shirt Reo left out for him.
I don't want to die.
"Don't you?" the voice in his head laughs, "That's what your actions all point towards. What will you find by succumbing to your wounds in the dead of night? Glory? Honor?" it chuckles, sharpened teeth glinting in the dark.
"I've never felt a need for glory," the boy wheezes, slipping beneath his sheets. What use is glory to a quirkless teen?
"You too once wished for it."
"The kid you're thinking of died long ago," Midoriya breathes, easing himself onto his good side. His All Might posters smile at him brightly, reassuring him with lies that tell him everything's okay, that he's safe.
In truth he wasn't. And neither was Aizawa or Thirteen or any of class 1-A. He doesn't know what happened to any of them, not after they'd gotten out, not after he'd been forced to run away. Aizawa could be dead. Any of them could be dead.
Midoriya releases a shaky breath, tears curling at the corners of his eyes as he lets them fall closed. He can't tell if they're a result of his mental state or the fire consuming him. Either way he's unconscious within minutes.
What sleep Midoriya gets is accompanied by night terrors. This first night brings with it a dark portal that yawns open before him, a swirling obsidian that consumes that which comes too near. It drags him in with all the force of a black hole, tearing at his atoms, undoing him. The more he fights against it the more he is destroyed.
But a hand emerges from the void, clawing its way out of the darkness defying its crushing gravity. It reaches out with the intent to mutilate.
Midoriya has known much suffering from the likes of hands like these.
The strangely unfamiliar voice of Overhaul echoes from the portal, "Power never suited you." The hand laches carefully around his wrist. "Glory is honorable only to those selfish enough to desire it."
(He won't remember this dream.)

In the days following the USJ incident Midoriya is forced to stay home. Reo brings him a small handful of stronger pain medication, explaining to him how many to take and when. But, even these are only able to help so much. A fever accompanies his wounds, and as infuriating as it is for Midoriya, neither Inko nor Reo give his bedridden state a second thought because of it.
"They've closed the school until tomorrow so they can revamp the security system. The press have obviously been having a field day with it, but..." Reo trails off, clearly reluctant to pry. Midoriya watches as the teen leans back, starting at the ceiling. "I still don't know how you were involved in any of it. I've already heard everything they're saying on the news several times over by now. But... none of it even mentions you."
Izuku takes a moment to gather himself before speaking. "I thought it was Overhaul," Midoriya whispers, "That gathering I told you about... I thought it was Overhaul's doing."

I would CRY
Reo raises his head, studying him from the desk chair, eyes flickering over the fifteen-year-old's face.
"I told your uncle about it like you told me to, but they moved their meeting last minute. They had no way of knowing where it'd moved." Izuku does his best to clear his head of all other things, does his best to even his breathing, to control his pain. "I had a lead that could help me find the new place. I was on the phone with Tsukauchi-san while I was following up on it before the signal cut out, probably the work of a quirk looking back on it... I was able to give him the general location of where I thought the meeting was, but I still didn't have the exact location so I just kept following them... I–I thought I'd be able to go back once I found the place. I thought I wouldn't have to get involved."
"But it wasn't Overhaul," Reo breathes.
Midoriya's head dips down, studying his hands. "It wasn't. I didn't... I didn't realize what I was walking into," he chokes out. "I thought it'd just be a meeting so I was going to stick around for a bit. I wanted to see if I could find out anything they were planning before I left... Then they opened the warp gate."
Izuku doesn't tell him everything. He skips over the parts that are hard to tell, bypasses anything about Aizawa after he'd gotten injured. He pretends he didn't know Bakugou, pretends his bones hadn't broken beneath the fist of a monster.
Midoriya Izuku has had a lot of practice lying, such is the nature of vigilantism. He specializes in half truths and stories just detailed enough to be believable.
That's why Inko only believes he's sick. That's why Reo believes his spiraling health is the cause of coincidence or mental trauma or literally anything other than what Izuku doesn't want him to know. Because he trusts Midoriya, because he continues to trust Midoriya despite all of the lies he's told and the promises he's failed to keep.
Midoriya Izuku has had a lot of practice lying, so naturally he's become a good liar.
That night brings with it the woman Bakugou had saved him from. There's a smog that rises around him, tinged orange with distant fires. He watches as she raises a hand, oppressive heat waves rolling from her palms. Her presence alone is enough to suck all the moisture from the air.
In the dream her quirk is more powerful, the heat hotter, the pain more intense. From her mouth comes Bakugou's voice, "Still trying to play hero, Deku? " Midoriya brings an elbow up to cover his mouth and nose, doing his best to keep breathing.
More villains emerge from the wavering heat, faces distorted or simply not there, his memories of them confined to their quirks and what they could do. The heat gets worse, it blinds him, scorches his lungs as more villains appear. It's impossible to breathe, much less fight back against any of them.
A hand rises to caress his cheek, fingers searing into his skin. Disembodied lips pause at the cusp of his ear. Reo's voice slips through them. They whisper, "Why didn't you tell me? Why did you lie? "
And Midoriya weeps, crying, "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry!" The cheek that is his but also isn't melts beneath the hand and Izuku watches from an outsider's point of view as his(?) body falls to its
knees. It continues crying, continues begging for forgiveness that it has no right to.

Is this a new hero??
On the third night Midoriya wakes up at three in the morning in tears. It's his first dream about Eraserhead.
In it he is unable to run, instead forced to move like one would wading through knee high water. Aizawa is several yards ahead of him, his broken body sprawled across the broken concrete. Midoriya opens his mouth to scream the hero's name but all that comes out is the screeching cry of the monster. The pool of blood ringing the man's head grows larger with each passing second until its fanned out to the size of a small swimming pool.
I have to save him. I have to save him.
But all thoughts of such heroism are quickly swept away the moment he catches sight of another figure that begins emerging from the pool. Crawling out of it like one would from the pits of hell, comes the monster. It's drenched in Aizawa's blood like it'd swam in it. It's maw opens with a silent cry, blood streaming from it's mouth and down its face and arms and chest and—
A choked sob escapes the boy when he sees Aizawa beginning to slowly sink into the pool, disappearing beneath the rippling tide of red. The monster reaches its hand out towards the boy.
He wonders how many more times he'll have to suffer at the mercy of villainous hands such as these, wonders how many times will be enough to satiate his dreams of heroism.
How many times will he have to die?
How many more deaths will it take for people to call him martyr? To praise him for what he's accomplished?
The blood slick hand wraps itself around his face and the boy jerks awake gasping for air. Phantom fingers press into the skin of his jaw and his cheeks and his temples, crushing his skull. His side flares with fresh pain and he thinks for just a moment that he's just come to on the floor of the USJ all over again. He doesn't realize he's been sobbing aloud, doesn't realize he'd been screaming until his mother barges into his room, a look of panic carved into her brows. A harrowed sob breaks past his lips at the sight of her as she rushes over and drags him into a hug. The position he's pulled into sends a torrent of flames into his ribs and makes unbelievably sick and all he can bring himself to do is cry harder and cling to the front of her shirt like he's four again.
The Unseen Story Behind UA's Attack
By Akihito Jun April 14, 2232
(Disclaimer: Musutafu Hero Reporting and its writers neither support nor condone any form of illegal activities including that of vigilantism.)
As many are probably already aware, on April 11, 2232 a UA training facility known as the Unforeseen Simulation Joint (USJ) was infiltrated by what police state were seventy-three villains via an alleged teleportation quirk. The attack occurred during a routine training exercise involving one of the school's first year hero courses.
Upon the villain's arrival communications were cut with the outside world trapping twenty untrained students and two licensed heroes inside the building and leaving them to handle the hoard
of villains. Though thankfully none of the students were harmed in the attack, both teachers were admitted to the hospital with substantial injuries.
As reports of what happened that day are continuously being updated and new information is coming out, it has come to light about the involvement of a third party, the vigilante Pied Piper. Witnesses put Piper fighting alongside students and heroes inside the USJ. In an interview with one of the UA students present during the attack (who will remain anonymous for privacy purposes) stated that the vigilante helped take down the villain credited it Rescue Hero, Thirteen's hospitalization. The interviewee in question claims that it was thanks to this that their classmates were able to escape harm free and help was able to arrive so quickly.
All Might arrived on scene soon after, battling the leaders of the group before more heroes and police appeared. While at least two villains managed to escape all others were captured and are currently awaiting trial.
I was fortunate enough to get a meeting with one of the detectives handling the case who informed me of some of the events details. "To be honest with you... Piper deserves most of the credit for the capture of these villains... That kid [Piper] quite literally cut the group's task force in half, before they even managed to make it into school grounds." This detective, who for undisclosed reasons I am not allowed to name, later went on to state that police had been in contact with Piper leading up to the attack and that he "was the first to locate the villains' original meeting place".
While little info has been released on what took place after the students were evacuated from the building. But, I did manage to intercept reports from onsite medical personnel that a person matching Pied Piper's description was carried out to an ambulance in an injured state before managing to escape.
With several days having passed since Pied Piper's escape there is still no news on the vigilante's whereabouts or his current health. Many fans believe he's simply recuperating from what injuries he sustained during the fighting while others are starting to think the worst. Rumors of his death have recently begun circulating online forums, but thus far no verifiable evidence pointing to this has been brought forward.
When confronting the detective I met with this information they had very little to say, refusing to answer any questions about how Piper managed to escape or how the villains were able to bypass UA's notorious security system.

Tsukauchi Naomasa has never been one for violence, but at the moment he is mere seconds away from strangling the next person that speaks out of turn. There's been no recent news of Piper, no sightings, no known hospital visits, no unconscious bodies sprawled out in alleyways.
This is the type of silence that's sure to drive him mad.
And yet the silence isn't so silent at all.
UA calls a meeting a few days following the USJ incident. And as the lead detective on Piper's case he'd been asked by the UA's principal himself to attend. Tensions had been high since the beginning and had only gotten higher after thirty minutes of back and forth about things Naomasa
didn't see a point in discussing.
"We have to consider the possibility that Piper was working in collaboration with the League," Vlad King says hotly, eyes daring anyone to challenge him.
"Piper fought on UA's side," Naomasa hisses. "Not only did he split the League's fighting force in half before they made it on campus. But, he also risked his life to protect both the students and teachers. We have very clear eyewitness testimony on this," the Detective explains for what has to be the third time. "You can't just ignore all of that. Imagine what would've happened if all those villains had made it into the USJ. People could've died."
"In all due respect, Tsukauchi-san," the hero cuts in, eyeing him. "I believe you're too close to this case."
Naomasa's jaw clenches painfully, headache blooming painfully at the base of his skull
"It's because he's so close to this case that his input is so valuable," Nezu states calmly. "Out of all of us he's the one who knows Piper the best." The principal glances towards Naomasa. "It's known among some of the staff that the child has some history with UA. I believe that you're aware of this. Aizawa has told me that in a past encounter with Piper, the vigilante referenced UA as a sort of dream he was unable to achieve. If he was ever rejected for some reason it's possible that he could have wanted revenge which is what I believe Kan is referencing with his theory. But, as it stands there's no proof of this being the case."
"Are we really suspecting a kid that was seriously injured by members of the League to have been working in collaboration with them?" Yamada asks, "Most of you saw the state he was in after carrying Shouta up all those stairs. But besides that, we're ignoring something more important than whatever Piper's intentions were." There's a heavy pause as he leans forward, fingers lacing themselves together beneath his chin. "How did these villains get the info about 1-A's schedule? Even the students wouldn't've known about it until just before class."
Naomasa sends a grateful glance at the hero as the conversation finally steers itself away from Piper. "Police have started reviewing the school's security footage in collaboration with a select few faculty members here in search of any suspicious activity. Though we haven't managed to find anything significant as of yet anything."
Nezu accepts a cup of tea from Midnight, smiling gently at her. "It's highly possible that the press breach earlier this week could have served as a distraction for someone to access the lesson plans," he explains. "It was a possibility that I considered when it first occurred, but when nothing turned up missing or tampered with I pushed the idea to the side. It was my mistake for not taking my suspicions to all of you sooner."
Yamada shakes his head. "If you couldn't find anything unusual then there's no one here who would've fared any better." The hero lets out a heavy sigh, yellow-green eyes scanning the faces in the room. "If nothing outwardly suspicious is found then I think it's important we consider the possibility of a traitor."
