A/N: New fic is here, alert the press!
My second TD crossover story has arrived to FFN, only ~six years after the first one! This one is more thought out and has surpassed ADSOW by many thousands of words, so strap in!
This story takes place sometime between Books 1 and 2 of Legend of Korra. Some liberties will be taken on how some things work, but that's an author's note for later.
Disclaimer: Don't own the characters. I'm writing this because it's fun.
Enjoy!
There were days where being on phone duty was incredibly boring.
Today would not be one of those days.
The man on the other line sounded panicked. "Someone was airbending and firebending at the same time! Blew the place apart! I've never been so frightened," he explained.
Mako blinked, looking at the phone confused before putting it back to his ear. "That's impossible. There's only a few airbenders around these days and none of them can also firebend. Only the Avatar can do that, and she's at home-"
"I know what I saw, officer. My momma raised me not to lie to authority and I'm not lying now."
Mako sighed, picking up his pen. "…where did you say this took place?" He didn't actually believe the guy, he was just doing his job and getting the details.
The man couldn't possibly be telling the truth.
He stared out at the scene in front of him that had been taped off by his fellow policemen.
Several storefronts had caught on fire. A large chunk of an awning had shattered into splinters on the road while produce and various other goods had rolled away from their original baskets and crates.
"Are you sure there was just one?" Mako heard another officer asking a woman who appeared to be one of the shop owners.
"I swear on my poor bruised fruit, I only saw one," she confirmed. "I thought the street violence had died down around here but I was wrong."
"What did they look like?" Mako cut in, saluting his colleague briefly. They saluted back and moved out of the way.
"Tall, slim, not so broad as you, cutie," the woman described as she scanned him and smiled.
"Uh huh…any other…details you can share?" Mako broke eye contact as he pulled his notepad out ready to put things down.
"Was wearing green, maybe, or red, it's so hard to tell the difference…I didn't hear a voice, hm…long hair. Reminds me of my relatives in the water tribe. I should really pay them a visit up there…"
"Right, that totally checks out. A person from the water tribe… firebending." He didn't get enough sleep for this. Sure, parents from different nations were totally a possibility. He just didn't think of that at the moment.
"I've never seen anyone move like that in my days, and I have a full access pass at the pro bending ring!"
"Okay, well, thank you for your cooperation, we will be getting to the bottom of this as soon as possible, if all goes well," Mako assured her.
"Thank you dear, you can always stop by for a melon or two when my shop gets fixed," the shopkeep promised with a wink.
Mako cringed internally and slowly turned away, surveying the crime scene once again. Two people saw it…maybe it was real.
No, I need to see it for myself.
Something suddenly caught his eye as he looked away briefly.
"You there," Mako pointed to a guy sitting near the site of the incident against a wall. "Really, sleeping by a crime scene?"
The teenager looked up at him with an emptiness to his face. "Hm?" he asked, glancing around as he slowly came to. "What…where am I?" He was wearing an apron that matched the one the shopkeeper was wearing, although his clothing didn't fit her description with the more vibrant greenish-blue color of his jacket over his yellow shirt. One of his shoes was missing. His shoulder length hair was pulled back, save for shorter, spikier strands in the front. There were multiple bruises on his arms, and a cut on his cheek.
Mako raised an eyebrow. "You don't know? You're in an alley, and you look injured," he explained. "I'm with Republic City police."
"Oh." He stood up, dusting off his apron. "That's odd…I should be at work right now." He wasn't really focusing
on anything in particular; his brown eyes were clouded.
Something about this guy made Mako uneasy, but he did match part of the physical appearance in the shopkeeper's story... "Do you happen to work at a fruit stand?" he asked, glancing again at his apron.
The kid nodded. "Yes, why?"
"…come with me."
A potential witness! Or suspect? Perhaps Mako will get the answers he's looking for! Or not! In the next chapter of Split! The! Difference!
Reviews are always appreciated. See ya next chapter!
