Cruel Summer

It was almost midnight when Klaus stopped the car in front of a small cabin on the shore of the lake. They had driven a few miles south, toward some small coastal town in Michigan. The party organized by Rebekah had irritated him more than usual: Klaus thought it was unwise to hold big events like that while Mikael was still looking for them and he was far from making any progress in breaking the curse.

He also felt that there was something different surrounding Mia. Of course, he could compelled her to tell what she was hiding, but he was trying to see how far the younger vampire loyalty went.

The wooden cabin was small, rustic, and completely different from any property the Mikaelsons had owned over the centuries. In fact, none of his siblings, not even Elijah, knew he had that house. It was a place that had little furniture, a double bed, a few bottles of bourbon because he was never off guard, and canvases, paper, paints, brushes, all kinds of artistic materials.

"Is this your hiding spot?" Mia asked, looking at the freshly painted canvases. Her face was in almost every one. "Who are you hiding from, Nik?"

"You're still going to find out that people actually hide from me, love" He replied with a smile and picked up one of the bottles of bourbon that was on the kitchen counter "Now let's go outside, I want to show you something."

They headed outside the house, which had a deck that led down to the lake. It was a different landscape than the view from Chicago, despite being the same lake. There were no other houses nearby and the surrounding forest was much denser. In that solstice night, the sky was full of stars and lit by the full moon.

Still dressed for the gala, the two sat on the edge of the deck with a bottle. Even though it was the official start of summer, the wind made the temperature lower and the water in the lake was cold, but that didn't make any difference to both of them.

Klaus started to take off his bow tie and tuxedo, while he heard Mia laughing. Completely naked, he jumped into the lake, causing splashes of water to hit the dancer.

"What are you waiting? It's still my birthday and I want to swim with you, sweetheart" Klaus replied and saw Mia get up and remove her white silk dress, shoes and diamond necklace, and place them neatly on the farthest part of the deck.

There was no lighting, only the moonlight, but Klaus could clearly see the silhouette of the vampire's body. She jumped into the water, swam towards him and put her arms around his neck.

Klaus gently touched her brown hair and smiled. He wanted to engrave in his mind the image of Mia's blue eyes reflecting in the lake. In his almost 950 years of life, this was probably his best birthday celebration.

The kiss started out soft, but quickly intensified. Mia wrapped her legs around Klaus' waist and fit her hips against his. With one hand, he held the vampire inside the water and with the other he explored her body.

He pinched one of her nipples and Mia moaned in his ear, which made him even more hard, as if it were possible. His hand went down her flat stomach until it reached the entrance to her folds. Klaus made circular movements and, without warning, penetrated her with two fingers, making her scream his name loudly. She continued riding his fingers greedily.

"Do you know how long I waited for this? To have you desperate screaming my name for an orgasm?" He said, thrusting into her and biting her neck with his teeth. Klaus removed his fingers and tasted her, seeing Mia's frustrated expression for wanting to continue.

In one extremely quick movement, he lifted her back onto the wooden deck and placed her on the ground. Klaus spread Mia's legs and placed them on his shoulders, and buried his face between her thighs. Every time she felt his tongue against her, it felt like she was on fire. Mia knew that the orgasm was close and so did Klaus.

Mia held the curls of Klaus' hair so that he continued eating her out and intensified the stimulation, until the wave of pleasure ran through her entire body and she came in his mouth for the first time that night. Without much time, Klaus turned Mia on her back and put her on all fours, and penetrated her.

The pace was intense and Klaus knew that if Mia were human, she would already be hurt at this point. He squeezed hard her round ass and went back and forth again. The two didn't talk much. There wasn't much to talk about, just to feel. And Klaus felt their sweaty bodies, the perfect fit and the only noises he could hear were panting breaths, moans and the sound of his hips slamming quickly against Mia's back.

He was holding her by the hair and his fangs came out and scratched her neck, making Mia shiver. If her blood was as good as her arousal, Klaus would be doomed. But that would be for another time.

He came inside her and turned her over gently. Mia placed her head on Klaus' chest, who was stroking her hair.

"That was…intense" She said after a while. Mia raised her head to look at Klaus' face, which was staring at the moon, with a thoughtful expression "What are you thinking about?"

"I'm thinking that I wanted this moment to last forever" Klaus replied, looking back at Mia "And for you to spend the summer with me. And autumn. And who knows, maybe even winter."

"Come to Long Island with me next month!" Mia said cheerful "You're going to meet Kat, and I'm sure you'll get along great, and then we can go back to Chicago in September. Or go somewhere else. Where do you wanna go?"

"Now I want to go to the bedroom, take you to a decent bed and hear you moan my name again, love" Klaus helped Mia to get up, picked her up in his arms and took her straight into the cabin.

When the first rays of sunlight entered the cabin's bedroom window, Mia was reluctant to move. She wanted to stay lost in Nik's arms, smelling his scent, his touch, the sound of his laugh, his British accent.

Nik was already awake, tracing patterns down her back with his fingers. Mia turned to him and knew that she must look like a mess, with her hair out of place and the rest of her makeup smudged.

"I could get used to this view every day" Nik said, pressing a kiss to her forehead.

"For whoever said that love is a vampire's greatest weakness, you're quite romantic" Mia noted and saw Nik look away. She didn't know what he actually felt for her, but she knew that they had already passed the phase of just being physically attracted.

As much as Mia had listened to every possible piece of advice from Katherine regarding men for decades, this was the first time she had felt vulnerable in this way with someone. But at the same time, she had so many doubts about Nik's behavior and the comments Rebekah had made last night were still lingering in her head.

They dressed in yesterday's clothes and Mia put the diamond necklace in her purse. As much as being isolated in that cabin with Nik was all she wanted, she still had to perform at Gloria's that night.

The two got in the convertible and headed back to Chicago. The first day of the summer of 1920 seemed perfect. The completely blue sky, the sun touching the skin and the wind blowing against the hair in just the right amount.

Despite the almost idyllic scenario, Mia couldn't hold back the questions for long. She knew Nik wasn't a ripper like Stefan, but what actually was he? He didn't look at all like those vampires with their humanity turned off she'd met along the way.

"What Rebekah said yesterday is true?" She asked in a lower voice, looking at the highway "About you keeping letters from the victims you kill."

Nik didn't take his eyes off the road and took a few seconds to respond.

"It's not something I'm proud of" He finally said "It's not like I collect trophies. I'm not going to lie and say I feel guilty either. It's somewhere between feeling alone and wondering if those people I killed felt that way too."

Mia swallowed. Well, he wasn't a serial killer, but it couldn't be said that it was completely normal behavior.

"I don't want you to be afraid of me" Nik said almost in a whisper "I will never hurt you, Mia. But you will understand that when you live as long as I do, it is impossible not to make enemies along the way."

She knew this was true, she experienced it with Katherine. They were never able to settle in one place for long because of the constant threats from other supernatural creatures that crossed their path.

Deep down, Mia knew that she and Kat could only live completely free when they found some way to kill the original vampire who had been chasing Katherine for centuries. Klaus. Mia had just a name without a face. She didn't know his last name, his origins, where he was, nothing. She only knew that he had a brother named Elijah, who fell in love with Kat at the time.

"I know you won't hurt me. I just want to be able to know everything about you" Mia replied looking at Nik. His dark blonde hair was messy because of the wind. "Every part of you. The good and the bad."

Nik smiled at Mia and looked back at the road. About an hour later, they arrived in Chicago and Nik dropped her off at the door of Gloria's bar. He confirmed that he would meet her at night for her performance. Mia was going up the stairs that led to the suite when Gloria called her.

"Mia, darling, a girl who says she is your friend is waiting for you in your room", the witch said and Mia felt her chest fill with joy.

Katherine was here.

She thanked Gloria and ran up the stairs to open the door. Katherine was standing looking through Mia's dresses in the small closet. She looked glamorous as always. This time, the long, voluminous curly hair gave way to a modern, straight bob cut.

"Kat! My God, I miss you!" Mia hugged her friend "And you cut your hair! I don't believe!"

"It's very flapper, it's the summer fashion, it's very New York" Kat replied, running her hand through her brown hair "And I missed you too."

"I can't believe it… you're finally going to meet Nik, and oh my God, there's Stefan, and Kat, we have to think about how we're going to talk to him and Damon isn't here and…" Mia started talking quickly and Katherine interrupted her.

"Breathe. One thing at a time" The older vampire said and sat down on the bed "And first of all, I need a drink."

A few hours later, the two best friends were sitting at a table further away in Gloria's bar. The place was still closed to customers and they were drinking the most expensive bottle of champagne that the witch sold.

"So, to recap, Stefan's humanity is turned off, Damon is missing, and you're completely in love with a millionaire vampire who gives you bloodstained flowers?" Katherine asked Mia, who laughed and lit a cigarette and handed the packet to her friend.

"Yes… but I wouldn't say completely in love" Mia said "I like him. A lot. And yes, it's more than a summer fling."

"Well, I already told you, don't be stupid" Katherine replied and took a sip of champagne "As for Stefan, you're going to invite him to a more private place so you can tell him and I'll show up. We can only hope that he doesn't want to rip my heart out."

"The problem is that Stefan is dating Rebekah, Nik's sister" Mia explained "And she is very possessive, we need to distract her with something."

"That's one of our smallest problems" Katherine said and remained silent for a few seconds, fiddling with the lapis lazuli necklace that Emily Bennett made for her "Do you think he loves her?"

"I don't know, Kat" Mia answered honestly "I don't know who Stefan is. I'm living with this…version of him. A version with no feelings, no guilt and a lot of anger of Damon."

Katherine drank the glass of champagne to the end and got up to go to the bathroom. Mia knew that her friend had never stopped caring about Stefan, even with all the affairs she had later. But she also knew that kind of love wasn't healthy for anyone.

Kat returned from the bathroom and sat down at the table again. "Mia, I think there's someone knocking on the bar's door."

"It must be Nik, I'll be right back" Mia got up and walked to the entrance of the establishment and saw Nik through the window. She gave him a smile and opened the large wooden door.

"I thought you would come here later" She said and gave him a kiss on the lips "The bar is still closed."

"I had nothing better to do and well… I missed you" Nik replied and walked into the bar.

"You're right on time, because my friend Kat is finally here and you're going to meet her!" Mia said and looked at the table the two were sitting at, which was now completely empty "Well, she must have gone to get something from my room. Can you wait for me down here until I get back?"

Nik nodded and walked towards the counter, where he grabbed a glass and a bottle of bourbon.

Mia went up the stairs towards the suite and opened the door. Katherine paced side to side, looking terrified, as if she had seen a ghost.

"What is it, Kat?" Mia asked scared, getting close to her friend "What happened?"

Katherine pulled her onto the porch, so the sound of cars on the street made it difficult to hear their conversation.

"Mia. Listen carefully to what I'm going to say because we don't have much time" Kat held her by the shoulders and looked at her friend's confused expression "Grab all your things and let's escape through the emergency stairs now. That man you call Nik is not who you think he is. He is Klaus."
